As soon as you beat the first two bosses the pacing hits the fucking wall and stays slow as government until the end, when they rapid fire the remaining, clearly unfinished bosses at you. And the story can't decide or describe what Kagura is actually supposed to be. And I say that as someone who does consider the first act of the game the actual peak of the series.

Story I would give to Burst since most of DC is just moral arguments about the true nature of shinobi and if they should even follow the Shinobi Council in killing a walking WMD or not. Aesthetics I agree.Gameplay in DC sucks so much ass because of enemy super armor paired with the fact that if you don't have Shinobi Stones that give damage buffs to attacks AND extra reach on your attacks you cannot reasonably kill anything without either eating dirt every five seconds due to the super armor letting enemies immediately attack you or whiffing constantly. The Yoma's Nest will show you how poorly balanced the game is. Many characters aren't even viable whatsoever like Hikage, Ikaruga, Hibari, and if I remember right Haruka. It's also super easily broken by Yomi's crossbow or jump slamming everything to death, though you could make the same argument with Mirai and the grenade launcher, or Hibari and her one-shotting kunai in Burst.Story-wise the story doesn't even begin to move until they start harboring Kagura at which point it becomes Asuka and Homura waxing poetic about morality, the rest of the pairs do the same, and then they give the middle finger to the Shinobi Council. There's tons of good character moments sprinkled about, particularly between Kat and Snek as they finally start to bring up some of Snek's various quirks, but overall it's so few and far between and constantly in between moral arguments.

Poor Homura is only playable in one mission at the start of the story and her and her squad are basically gag characters. The game's saving grace is the amount of extra content it has. And the online pvp.
