Esteemed game director Jonathan Blow's latest magnum opus released today.
Let's discuss puzzles and/or tenderly loving the Thief.
>>
Just put the puzzles in the bag, John

I like the boat :)

The new voice acting feels weird now that I got used to the one in the demo.

im having a blast
looking forward to a puzzle weekend, now gotta get my wagie sleep

All I could think about during this part was all the game dialog I've watch blow skip on stream.

wtf she's white? no wonder
>>
>Order of the Flopping Shart
>>
I wonder if the skipping stones intro 6 treasures do anything
I also wonder if I have to get all 6 + complete the level in one run, or I can just get 1 or 2 in a run and eventually add up to 6

I got 3 so far

Played 11 hours today, savegame says I have 120 solved, picrel

I started on a fresh save, but did clear the demo a few months ago so was able to beat some tricky levels pretty fast because I remembered the solutions. Loving the stones and beams
>>
>>749333905
>white
???
>>
>>749333947
Can you soft lock yourself from them? I beat the first skipping stones area only getting 1 treasure. I went to the grey island after you return to the ship on the left which I assume is key to getting more, but seemed stuck. I didn't want to dwell on it too much because I assumed maybe you have to do some out of the box stuff right from the start of the level to get them and will go back to it later.
>>
>>749334039
Its very easy to softlock the treasures I got
I assume I'm going to have to beat the entire skipping stones multiple times to figure out all the treasures
>>
PC or Shitch 2?

saw this pop up on steam. the puzzles look interesting. is it fun?
>>
>>749334234
No! But the puzzles are interesting.
>>
>>749334234
Entirely depends on what you like. I love mirrors and promise, skipping stones is complete mega ass (in my opinion).
>>
>>749334234
Yes, and I bought it do to the amount of it has. I watched a pre release interview that is on Jonathan did and it has something like over 500 puzzles.
>>
>>749334249
That IS interesting!
>>749334326
I'm willing to give most things a go, and this might be a good time. I haven't played something like this in a long time
>>749334356
yeah, when it showed the map in the trailer, I realised it'd be a pretty meaty game and not 30 bucks for 5 hours of gameplay and a handful of puzzles
>>
>3.7k peak

>>
>>749334234
I love it, goty for me, but I love puzzle games I can automatically dive into and dedicate all my gaming time into until I'm done
>>

>>
>>749334525

>>
I'm addicted to this game
>>
>>749335195
I had to force myself to stop for the day. Looking forward to playing more tomorrow.
>>
>>749334525
Anyone who is not retarded knew this would happen. Game is great, value to usd is great. Average gaymer doesn't care about sokoban (japanese warehouse simulator desu-ne). Jon should switch from games to pure tech, there is no market for video game crosswords. The entirety of his modern credit is technical knowhow. Primeagen isn't going to play his game, neither is any other cockslurper that brings him on their stream.
>>
Skipping stones is hard because its too tempting to just fuck around with rocks instead of actually thinking what you need to do and how to get there
>>
>>749332524
Is this the game he added a story to?
Is the story paced with something every puzzle or couple or are there story progression puzzles with side puzzles?
>>
>best puzzle game of all time
>complete crickets from the gaming public
Gamers are such goyim holy shit
>>
>>749335616
Actually all he has to do is use his superior coding skills to not spend 11 years and 20 million dollars making a block pushing game.
Since he's so much better than everyone at coding it should be easy.
>>
>basic puzzles for retards that make retards feel smart
of course people love it
>>
>>749335797
Since you're so much better at game design what's your brilliant idea? Let's hear it.
>>
>>749334525
puzzle games don't really work on streaming since they aren't fun to watch unless you already have interest in them (at which point you may as well just play yourself instead)
>>
>>749335826
If I play Picross to feel smart will these also make me feel smart?
>>
>>749335702
At least in the initial campaigns, every puzzle has dialog. But in the side content and even one of the overlap areas, it's complete silence, which surprised me. It honestly feels like they accidentally forgot to put dialog into Heroes and Mirrors.
>>
Do you guys replay demo levels? Im thinking about replaying western area because I remember jackshit from it and there are a lot of rules
>>
>>749335797
He is superior to everyone else, unironically. Ootss is an insane accomplishment on every technical level. It is running native, hand rolled, new language, etc etc. Theres just no market for that.
>>
>>749335837
The game was already designed, it's mostly made of 4 games that already exist. Again though, the point is that he's not going to break even but he could have if he didn't spend 11 years and 20 million dollars making a block pushing game.
>>
>>749335854
it's not really the methodical kind of puzzle picross is, cipher zero might be able to scratch a similar itch while making you feel smart off the top of my head
>>
>>749335904
he and his team pretty significantly tweaked most of the levels in the existing games he's working off of
>>
>>749335883
A good chunk of the dialog was changed, so yes.
>>
>>749335904
>making a block pushing game.
*and an engine
*and a programming language
>>
>>749335883
I replayed from scratch and I don't regret it, a pretty significant amount of dialogue was rewritten (west and east are basically completely different off the top of my head)
>>
>Go MAGA Go Broke
>>
>>749335904
>it's mostly made of 4 games that already exist
1) The "ported" levels are the first 5% of the game.
2) They weren't just porter, they were redesigned to be more fun. You can especially feel it in the Beamcasters. Promesst went from the worst of the 4 to the best. And the Druid was completely reworked.
>>
>>749336002
Yes, I would hope so, it took 11 years.

>>749336019
I'm going to blow your mind here. Every game has an "engine"
The language is irrelevant to the game, it's cool that he enjoys that though and having faster compile times probably increased his fun while making the game....but 11 years is too fucking long for this.
>>
File: file.jpg (451 KB, 1920x1080)

I got absolutely int-checked on this level. Was a solid 50 minutes of going what the fuck. Super satisfying finally figuring it out.

FILTERED
>>
>>749336172
The tooling is absolutely irrelevant to everyone but the developer.
>>
>>749336172
Refute a single thing I said, oh genius one.

Every game has an engine, that doesn't matter, this game would look and perform the exact same on any other engine that already exists. The language, again, that compiles down to the exact same as if he made it in another language. I'm happy for him that he is making those things if he enjoys that, but I am not going to excuse the insane amount of time it took.
>>
>>749336271
Yeah I got filtered by holding speed up time button for 1 minute and not aligning the send cuck rock to land on this petalfile within 44.56ms exactly.
>>
>>749336303
>this game would look and perform the exact same on any other engine that already exists.
you are retarded
are you one of the devs you fucking retard?
only a retard would defend this and tell such lies
>>
>>749336303
>this game would look and perform the exact same on any other engine that already exists.
so what is the reason you are lying you fucking retard?
>>
>>749336303
>but I am not going to excuse the insane amount of time it took.
Please tell me you at least got a PhD or something equally impressive in the last 11 years. That's why you're on your high horse right now, right? Because you did something impressive too?
>>
>>749335661
I feel like the screens (at least in the first level) are too open-ended, it's frequently unclear what the goal even is and it seems like you can exit in any number of directions. This is often coupled with the expectation that the player will just bumble into a new mechanic or interaction that's required for intended the solution. It's, quite frankly, just plain horrible.

The second level seems a lot better, so far.
>>
>>749336438
...You think this game couldn't be made in any of the popular engines available? Haha. It's kind of endearing how far you go to defend a guy you don't even know.
>>
>>749336384
>>749336438
Holy fuck, you two don't know what a game "engine" even is lol
What do you think Jon has created here, something revolutionary? What specifically can only his magic engine do? Please explain it

>>749336497
Yes, I have done more than one thing over the last 11 years.
>>
>>749336551
I think this is just the natural result of having listened to Blow's self-important monologues on stream for the past six years and having come to believe that everything he's doing is something entirely novel and brilliant.
>>
>>749336303
This is actually untrue. There's a SOVL that gets carried to the game when you make your own engine.
Think about it. Rollercoaster Tycoon gets praise while 99 percent of everything today is slop. All the games that have sovl had an engine. The spiritual sovl of an engine carries over to the game. It has no other explanation. This is stuff an atheist can't explain.
>>
>>749336532
there was a point I was convinced I had softlocked myself because I didn't bring a rock with me that I thought I maybe could have, at least the constant checkpoints kind of push against that notion but it still feels pretty aimless especially since the way the rocks and lilypads behave is already a really weird mechanic to adjust to
>>
>>749336539
>...You think this game couldn't be made in any of the popular engines available?

why are you lying you retard, that's that what it says you retard.
>this game would look and perform the exact same on any other engine that already exists.
so why are you lying you worthless retarded turd?
the game would perform significantly better if made in unity or any other engine that wasn't made by the retard blow.

the maxed out overworld would choke every single mainstream engine because of all the active entities. Most devs would end up having to do ad-hoc instancing and chunking, which would be a bitch later because of what i assume would be overworld-wide puzzles

I wonder what Blow's next game will be. All that we know is:
>It's smaller than OotSS and will reuse the engine
>It's not a puzzle game
>Edmund McMillen played it and it inspired something in Mewgenics. Blow guessed that it was enemies becoming obstacles when you kill them, but McMillen said that this is unrelated.

The very first world I entered was the skipping stones one. It went smoothly until I felt absolutely and completely 100% stuck.
Wondered if maybe I had placed myself in some kind of loss state by clearing the prior screens sub-optimally. But even when rewinding I struggled to comprehend how to proceed.
After way too much time at my "final" screen of the world, I exited. And then I entered the mirror world instead.
And boy was that different. Smooth sailing all the way through.
>>
>>749338183
it's okay if you don't understand anon, I also don't like Blow's game for a lot of reasons. But technically it could not easily be ported to mainstream engines, and would require a lot of work.
>>
>>749338257
Skipping Stones is the hardest area.
>>
Think I'm done for the day, ending at 171 puzzles done. It's getting way more interesting than the demo with the puzzle mixing. Also I didn't realize you could play the light beam levels with the camera zoomed out. It makes them way more playable. Still haven't found a single 3D level yet which is crazy considering the trailer had so many
>>
>>749338226
It took 5 days before mewgenics hit its peak, wait a few days
>>
>>749337876
Game is ok, I played the demo(s), but can't be bothered playing enough of the actual game to get to the OC puzzles.
Jon lost the plot in both the scope, and the voice-acting + story. He breaks his own rules with not distracting the player.
>>
>>749333981
I also played 11 hours today and solved 130, I love this game it's infinite sokoban and every puzzle has a new insight. I can see how it would filter reviewers who aren't sokoban enjoyers though. The beam area is the best, I still haven't made much progress on the skipping stones so I'll try that next
>>
It's empirical fact. Games with sovl tend to be made in their own engine. The history of gaming proves this. By making an engine Blow imbued SOVL into the game.
History will remember The Blow and everyone will forget your Unityslop.

Default Godot and Unity would be at 3FPS.
Unreal might fare better these days given the fortnite updates. But default UE5 is still grossly unoptimized.

What the fuck do I do here, This game is really starting to annoy me in how even through experimentation I can't figure out a mechanic. This game will fail because most "puzzle game fans" don't actually like puzzles, they want to see some crazy meta twist like Witness environment puzzles, or very unusual mechanic gimmick like that game where perspective changes the size of objects (which isn't enough to make a long game, but it doesn't matter). It doesn't even need to be puzzle related, it could be purely story shit like Talos Principle 1. The amount of people who like puzzle games for the puzzles themselves is smaller than even the small "puzzle game audience".

It's cool that Thekla spent a lot of time and effort making something which would otherwise be considered hyper-niche and never make it on commercial terms even if I'm not interested in sokoban myself. Reminds me of the 90s where everyone was making what seemed cool to them

>>
>>749345565
I'd recommend starting over, firstly because the knowledge from the tutorials will be fresher, making you more able to handle the harder puzzles. And second, the demo had AI VO, now it has proper actors.

Someone help me with the skipping stone chests.

I think I have them all figured out except the one in the middle right below the spawning area, which I suspect you get by deviating the water on the right puzzle so a lily pad takes you there but I'm failing to make that arrangement, I think maybe I need an extra rock from somewhere before? But from where? Getting the extra one via slowmo button in the first area already felt kind of absurd abuse.

A stones is a lot of fun once you start "thinking with portals". Once I adjusted my brain to the idea that the water is essentially one long push and not just trying shit it really unlocked the fun

Yes, that's Bungie's problem. What matters to the consumer is that their game works, not how easy it is for the devs to make their game work. To the consumer, good tooling matters as much as how healthy the developer eats or how much sleep they get.

What a retarded take. Sure there is the one central word pushing sentence forming gimmick, but each word is a separate mechanic, so in a sense there are dozens of gimmicks. What achievement? Wasting time and effort reinventing the wheel isn't an accomplishment to be praised. It is a deeply personal thing in scope that I'm sure gave Blow personally satisfaction but it means dick all to advancing gaming as a whole. It's not even clear that his pet language project even has any strengths at all. The specs and performance of a block pushing game are pretty fucking grim. It's way too early to declare the game itself an achievement because no one has completed it to a degree to pass a valid judgment.

I do think the music is really doing the heavy lifting and pulling on heart strings, because beyond that, there really wasn't much emotional attachment to the characters. In fact I felt it a bit odd that the ending was a reunion of sorts, like it was your coming of age (but end of an age I guess) but you don't even really know them or why they would be important to be there at the end. Most of them I talked to 1 time for 2 minutes during a 25 hour playthrough. The ending was good in a vacuum, just didn't build up to it effectively I find.

>>749350201
Kinda. The last one requires that you finish the first one with a spare rock. And I solved that part but got stumped by the actual puzzle once you use that to get to a new area
>>
>>749349976
>there really wasn't much emotional attachment to the characters
That's not even that relevant, nor why the ending works so well. The first *big* thing is the way the pre-ending sequence is build up in such a way that you, the player, understand the implied consequences of what you're about to do and why you're deliberately doing this from all you've learned in your playtime, which should build up a ton of tension/anticipation. Then you join with God and see the ultimate futility of everything else in the universe.

>I do think the music is really doing the heavy lifting and pulling on heart strings
Yes, and that's quite deliberate, from the get go the game emphasizes the music and uses that to lead into how it's ultimately to come together.

>insane accomplishment on every technical level
The game runs like shit.
>>
>>749350482
There is a whole "everyone's here now" campfire and you are saying it wasn't trying to evoke some sort of kinship or something?

I might be forgetting the pre-ending sequence you refer to, as in the clues you get to understand what you are doing. All I really remember of the important stuff is the lizard race failed their project, but millions of years later due to the supernova the probe was launched, its been looping for thousands of iterations, you warp to the eye, and then it ends, but I am not really remembering why I needed to warp to the eye. I know removing the core from the ash twin is what stops the looping, so in that sense I was going to die to the supernova no matter what, but what were we supposed to expect in the eye?

I guess the only reason I harped on the characters is because its the only thing I really remember about the ending. That and the final splash graphic with the next cycle, which I thought was cool and though provoking.

This game has as much in common with talos principle as it does a sokoban. Its not a pure sokoban at all. I'd say a vast majority of the puzzles don't involve specific movements in tight spaces or take into account the order in which a box is pushed so some other box can fit as a requirement to solve

I played for just 46 minutes and solved a few of the mirror puzzles. It seems like a really good game. It'll probably keep me entertained for the next few dozen hours.
I don't understand why everyone is complaining about the story. So far, I've only seen an old man wondering what that place is, and a canoeist mentioning an oracle. It seems like a decent narrative for this type of game: people raising questions and telling unfinished stories, and you piece them together over time, while solve puzzles.
What I didn't like, first of all, is that the game has a lot of smoke effects that drive the GPU crazy. I set all the settings to the lowest possible, so my RTX 3090 stays quiet while I play.
Another thing is that the character's movement is a bit unpleasant. It should have more "snap" on the grid and move quickly between the squares. It moves on the grid like an RPG Maker character, rather than a Sokoban character, and that's not very nice...
But for the first 46 minutes, I think this is another good puzzle game for a genre that already has a lot of great games. I recommend it.

Recall what happens to quantum objects in the game when they are observed: they collapse into a physical state in a fixed position but technically when they are not observed they occupy all possible positions at once. When you enter the eye you even see another version of yourself. The campfire scene is happening inside of your head as you approach the epicenter of the quantum phenomenon. When you fully reach that panopticon point, the point where you observe every possible quantum state simultaneously, you spawn in all the quantum matter entagled in the phenomenon at once. This is far far more matter than could physically occupy the space and results in a big bang. Basically the Owlks knew that if a being or construct that had the property of manifesting quantum matter through observation reached the physical point inside the eye then it would annihilate the known universe through a gussied up variant of 2 objects clipping in skyrim and spazzing the fuck out.

I just started the west side. I got 10 gems. I think I need 12. Theres a (orange? Brown?) Beam that goes to the left side with a red block blocking a 1x1 gem. Its the beam where you teleport 3 steps when moving from it.

I dont see a way to get past the red block alive since I can teleport in to get the gem but then cant get out. Maybe im not understanding how the red beam worked. Do I obtain a personal buff of 'you can deactivate red shield blocks if you walk into them from a red beam'? Because the only thing I see is shooting a red beam up into the teleport beam nearby but no way to directly shoot the red block.

Or maybe I need to explore the two unexplored sections by getting in somehow with a green beam

i think a weakpoint of the puzzles is the lack of red herrings. generally anything you see would be used to solve the puzzle, so it kind of solves itself and/or is more easily brute forced. if there is "noise" in the puzzles, it is more difficult to brute force, and encourages more critical thinking as to what would be used to finish it
>>
>>749360540
I am having fun. So goy of me to spend $30 on a game that will last me a long time vs. $90 on a 10 hour campaign. Not that I think price should correlate to game length, but you would think since I am such a goy I would buy many shorter AAA games on repeat to line jewish pockets. Retard

>>749360526
light hint consider that beam effects work inside the beam and when you exit its radius
bigger hint you can be affected by more than one beam at once. can you mix the effect to get what you want?
solution stand two blocks away from red block while standing in crossing of red and orange beam, it will warp you and carry the red effect

I have been doing over 100 levels blind so far, but I finally had to look one up, and the reason I didn't get it is because I didn't think the grid extended as far as it did. Yeah I think you got the end goal. I personally didn't realize there was walkways all around the edges. Once I noticed that I noticed you can push the rock off the stage in directions I didn't consider. At least I think that's what I did been like 10 hours. More specific hint : I think if you roll the rocks to the previous stage you can retrieve them in such a way that you can manipulate them better. There is also a technique you learned already I believe where you tuck someone in and then roll the rock in front of them so they can get it off the edge of a pool, think how to do that with the lillipad

Welp, skipping stones has once again made me feel like a fucking moron. Thanks, I've got it now.

I'm glad it was "just push the rock" and not "skip the stones into each other to do a frame-perfect deflection." I think the possibility of the latter really made it hard to see the former, but maybe just assuming it will never be something like that will help reach clarity more quickly.

I'm wondering if there are layers to the over world or something? I want to say I have like at least 33% of the surface area revealed and I only have 138 puzzles solved in about 15 hours. I know blow clarified that the "over 1000 puzzles thing" doesn't mean over 1000 enterable stages (he counted an individual gem as a puzzle in the first west level for example), but it still feels like it's not adding up. Like I already reached the top and bottom of the map

I went west first, and got put into a "pocket mine". Like a 4 x 4 grid of rooms and an elevator to another 4 x 4 grid self contained puzzle world. I had to get 20 gems. Was very satisfying. I wonder how many of these there are in the game.

Minor spoiler I guess, but there are little mini versions too soon after I really enjoy. Like solving one room leads to the next, and to the next, and then maybe you have to go back a few rooms to adjust something etc. I really like those too because they aren't as behemoth as the big ones but also not just simple 1 room puzzles. I've only come across two giant ones so far, hopefully there is more.

There is a part later in this level with three streams going in opposite ways that was making me question if I even did it right given how tight the timing is. I beat it in the demo and it took me a while too, so this time around it was easier. A word of advice, at least for the ones I have done so far, try not to overthink it too much. I haven't encountered any that require a huge rube goldberg, after solving each one it felt like a small mini puzzle independent of other gems. I think you can do most with only a few lasers. I don't know if you want my unsolicited advice about the downstairs, but I did soft lock myself in the demo without realizing for like an hour before resetting and immediately noticed I misplaced something and got it stuck without thinking like an hour prior, so maybe consider a reset and doing them again one by one and not getting too complicated
