Hello fellow devs, how is your Friday going? Care to show off some progress no matter how little?
At what point do you stop and just take a break? I find it hard stopping i just keep wanting to fix a then b then oh fuck im on zz and it is 2 days later.
I gave up on finishing my jam game
>>749376467just keep going if youre still making progress

all this talk of AI is demotivating the FUCK outta me

Is this the worst time to learn how to make indie videogames from scratch solo?If not, where do I even start? I used to see everyone saying Unity, but I think people hate it now?
>>749382383You can watch tutorials on each one and see what you like. I only picked unreal engine sadly the tutorial was the first one I saw. Two years later oh boy
We got dithering texture gents. Tree leaves and the bird fighters. Im also clamping the pitch of the camera's yaw to stop rolling under the ground and fixing meshes between ignoring the camera and blocking, and blocking while dithering based on just looking at what makes sense.
How hard is it to make an interactive map program thing with icons and what not that can be filtered etc?
>>749382680i also want that dithering
i gave enemies fire shields (graphix pending) so they don't die in 1 hit. might need some balancing

>>749382438Could you elaborate on the journey?Did you start with blueprints and then started learning to create assets or something?Did you have trouble at some point? And do you actually have to code in your current workflow or is it mostly those visual systems where you link modules and things sort of work?
>>749387653
>>749387771You'll shed those chromies in time, you've already lost a few
Slow going on the main, passion project, but there's a lot of progress on 'Isekai Timeloop', thanks to claude.Implementing prototypes only costs a few hours and 20$ a month, so the bottleneck is my idea well which kinda dried up.>>749379161Every AAA game is ai assisted now. cope.
>>749387827My first one was figuring out how to pick up a sword and put it on my player's back, equip and unequip it. Most tutorials were unreal engine 5.3 so I started with blueprints. I used the 3rd person template because it gives you a good head start on the game. I recommend once ready to truly build your game start with a blank project. I then updated to 5.4 but you don't have to update or use the latest. After I figured out how to build a load out I wanted more advanced techniques. I wanted to build the game around gamepad use. Harder than you think. I refused using crap like common ui, it is bloat. Make a custom umg yourself. Once I got the gamepad core functions down I started building the levels. Keep in mind this is hours upon hours of testing, building, failing, crashing OH FUCK THE CRASHING, but eventually you find a very long and thorough tutorial series. I recommend unreal university, good video series and it is good to understand the big sections of unreal engine and syntax with visual scripting. I followed a 100 video Playlist on inventory. But I made it better and better for me. Also nothing wrong with using AI to help you understand what things mean and use it as a tool to help with moving functions forward. But if you have a cool idea do it, im having fun and I wont stop.
I'm working on my vertical slice. I want to pitch my game soon but it still isn't ready yet.
>>749377509Did asset flips demoralize you? If not why would something even shitter do it
>>749382383Unity still has more tutorials/resources, but for a complete beginner it's basically a coin flip between Unity and Godot. the gap between Unity and Godot when it comes to learning resources is closing really quicklyI'm on Unity because that's what I started with and I like using it, if I could start over I'd still pick Unity despite the problems w/ the company.monogame is also really fun, I like making small projects in that cus I can do them on my old ass laptop.
>>749387545creating or slopping
>>749387827To answer your other questions:>Did you start with blueprints and then started learning to create assets or something?I switch between things fairly frequently to keep development fresh, a mix between sections of unreal and blender, photoshop, fl studio, etc.I used assets as placeholders then got into blender. I use a number of blender plugins like autorigpro but I still control manual creation. Also asset packs to help speed things i dont care about too much like landscape objects and foliage that dont require a rtx5080. >Did you have trouble at some point?Oh yeah blender can feel like a damn k-hole at times and sometimes following tutorials that aren't super polished or not programmed the way you want can get annoying. eVentually as you learn you will catch up to their steps and think of edge cases to polosh your game. >And do you actually have to code in your current workflow or is it mostly those visual systems where you link modules and things sort of work? All visual scripting. Plugging in lego blocks i hate to break it down barney style but that is basically what it is. But I've gotten very far with just scripting.
>>749389730Not him, but asset flips do make storefronts noisier and hurt discoverability of decent games. And aside from that, when AI finally becomes an accepted fact of life and sheds its stigma, the competition on indie market will become a lot fiercer, as supply will grow while demand stays the same.
>>749391601Supply of literal shit will grow, yes, but demand for actual games will still not be met. The real problem is that in a couple years no one will have money at all to buy your game.
>>749382383Godot is a decent starting point. Unity is good for people who know what they're doing, but is a mediocre choice for beginners, because a lot of learning material is outdated or just shit and you may have trouble filtering the good stuff from the bad stuff.
>>749389743But with either Unity or monogame did you have to learn to code? or did you create your projects with visual scripting mostly?>>749391527Thank you for your answers>>749391780Do I need to learn a programming language at some point if I want to create an actual product using Godot? I just don't want to spread too thin, I'm goodish with photoshop so I can do sprite editing I guess, I've used 3dmax for architecture, and I might not be good at music but I think can outsource that, I'm just worried of getting into coding and being overwhelmed and just never finish anything.

>>749405651Don't just copy-paste the spell's icon SFX over the character, ffs.Silence look like a divine hallow and more like a buff than a debuff. If you are lazy you can just put an ominous floating X over his mouth or something.Stunned would look way better if the sparks were OVER the body instead of behind it.Drained look... meh.Guarded and purified need more differences. Maybe make Guarded blue-ish and more shield-y in the way the spheres pulse.Tainted should be renamed to poisoned. Why the fuck are you changing the name of the most common DoT?Scorched, same as drained, look meh. Unlike drained, *could* potentially be good by just making it a bit larger (burning people tend to take a lot of space) and splitting the particle source into two vertically so it look more like the entire body is burning instead of just his ass.Withered, same as drained but worse because the ass fart cloud is barely visible.
>>749408334Now do that for every other action in the game, including data and synchronisation. Two players moving in the same space is trivial. It's all the other shit on top that's hard.>>749408338Don't worry about it. Those people aren't your target audience. I made the mistake of trying to appease every player and their feedback in my first few games. You are the expert, take on critique, but filter it.>>749408416Thanks for the feedback.Silence: It's a hard problem. My characters are just PNGs. They don't have meta-data about mouth location and so on, and all the characters have different body shapes and head locations. The effect is most generalised to be visible on all the different shaped humanoids and monsters.Sunned: Fair point, I was thinking of doing a 2d shader on-top.Drained: I agree, I haven't figured out this one. I'll try some others.Guarded and Purified: They are from the same god, so I want to make them look similar colour wise. Give each set of effects a colour language.Tainted: Fair.Scorched: Thinking of like a flame or fire from below, but yes, could use some work.Withered: Agreed.
>>749408745>I made the mistake of trying to appease every player and their feedback in my first few games.what happened?

So how dangerous is this trend of chinks copying games and then selling them in china with mtx actually? I keep getting blackpilled by youtube videos about how they take any game remotely popular, unpack the binary and just add mtx and re-release it on the chinese appstore. Technically also doable with steam which is likely the bigger concern for people here, but I feel like valve is at least going to listen. Maybe.
>>749418752Just release a chinese version at the same time as english.
>>749418752What can you do about it?What do you want to do about it?If your entire drive to make video games goes away as soon as the risk of you making less money from it goes up, then you probably shouldn't be making the game, feel free to find something else to do.
>>749418978I think wanting to make a living from a profession is a pretty reasonable ask. If people acted like you, 99% of all games would not and could not exist. It's empty idealism.
I've been in the process of turning my game idea into reality with Claude over the last two days. I have a prototype now and it feels quite nice already. I wonder if by the time I might finish this, paying for vidya is a thing of the past because everybody can create them themselves...
>>749419062And 99% of games shouldn't exist, and it's easily provable by looking at the modern rate at which games are released and how many of them have no players. Yes, that's my point, in fact, you're the one with the idealism here, you believe there 'should' be a way for you to make money because you want to make money doing something, instead of looking at the reality of it.You cannot believe games to be art, yet claim that you only want to make games at the condition that you can make a living off of it, nobody owes you anything, and this mindset will lead you to get fucked in the ass and losing all your precious time and effort 'making a game' that nobody wants to play because there's no actual passion behind it.The reason why games are so shit nowadays is precisely because it's filled with idealistic retardation like this and people not even in it for the love of the game (pun very much intended), you don't want to make games, you want to make money, and now you're realizing that you can't make money here, so you will move on.
>>749419292Damn real
>>749419292I don't care about games being art, in fact I think most people who say this are faggots. I like many games which wouldn't exist otherwise and could not exist. I think most people would hate having 99% of games be taken away because some faggot thinks it should be an art exercise without profit involved.Who says I can not have any passion? Passion wont fucking feed me. Are you asking me to go homeless working on my game? Work a job? I sure as hell can't make my passion project whilst working a 9-5 to make rent. Your take falls apart with literally any examination. Do you think 99% of indiegames released for money, including all successful indie darlings, had zero passion behind them because the developer dared to try and be a full time developer instead of a retail worker? Get the fuck out of here. It's nonsense that assumes this can only hit soulless slop games, when this can happen to literally any game, and is far more likely to happen to good ones in the first place.
>>749387335I am not him, but I work alone, jam is a hard deadline, it keeps me focused and I determined to deliver a game. Basically without jams I can't make shit because I am lazy and undisciplined.I like ai, btw
I don't fear competition from sloppers and their slop, but what they are doing is killing discussions like these. Someone posts something and there's not really anything to discuss about it because the answer is always >lol i dunno Claude did it
>>749419089>I have a prototype now and it feels quite nice alreadyMay I see it?.jpg>paying for vidya is a thing of the past because everybody can create them themselves...Nobody is currently paying a tenth of what those token cost to process. And with chads also reverse-engineering all major licensed software into fully open-source versions, the timeline for "investors decide it's time to pull the bait and finally cash in" might accelerate a lot.
>>749419545>I think most people would hate having 99% of games be taken away because some faggot thinks it should be an art exercise without profit involved. You're completely missing the point, that's not my position, my position is that I don't care about your feelings and I'm giving you the reality of it: which you yourself started questioning by bringing in the chink market. You're obviously a fool with no deeper concept of how the world is ran or what 'money' is, even. Look at this:>b-but if I'm not getting paid from a magic tree that gives me money for free, then how will I make my gameYou won't. That's the whole point. I just don't want to do it if I'm not making money!?I'm not your mom, do whatever you want you dumbass, but don't come whining when you realize that your game, that you only worked on because you wanted 'to make it' either out of greed or narcissism, fails and joins the ranks of the 99% that end with <9 reviews.

>>749419795Yes Anon, I am sure it is entirely unreasonable to consider shifting chances and market realities, and no passionate budding indiedevs has ever done anything such as market their game or otherwise tried to increase their profits to continue to do what they want to do. Those "giants" you were talking about made a gamble, and they thought about that gamble, and less of them would gambled, if they thought it was a no-way win. Many of those early game developers had funding from evil evil capitalist institutions, which most certainly think this way, which allowed them to even put the game out in the first place by funding it.Obviously I am going to keep doing what I want, and I will try to adjust to the situation, because I do not live in some la la fantasy land. So yes, if I can have my cake and eat it too, like all successful indie devs before me, then I will try to do that and make my chances as good as they can be.Again, your entire argument hinges on what? That I can't ever be successful because I thought about the business side of my game? That because I am worried about something that may affect me, I am now delusional and purely in it for the money? Also lmao on the "what even is money" what faggotry. >>749423297Building is fine. But NEVER let claude test. AIs can not oneshot many tasks and you will never ever know which ones. Human verification is your strongest sanity check if claude already supercodemogs you.
>>749423856testing is actually the best thing about AIs now. They will run 10,000 tests and identify all the edge cases with even being asked. I think you think it's still 2025
>>749424052I can't confirm this. I use claude opus in unity via cursor and whilst they will run certain tests if asked, there is always going to be problems they did not catch. For example just a few days ago I vibecoded traffic AI agents for a racing game, but the cars did not drive correctly. After much prompting and looking at shit, including "test everything claude, verify etc." I figured out that it was the prefabs which were wrong. Claude couldn't figure it out without me manually testing certain things, and Claude did not do it at first try without issues. This is just an example, basically any major feature is full of edge case issues. No matter what high end llm I use or how much I tell Claude to sanitycheck, test and verify.Always manually verify edgecases.

>>749424385I am interested in this, can you explain? I assume you mean it's because Claude is looking through all files every time that's jacking up the context and costing tokens? It's a good idea. I already use Caveman.
>>749424286no frills + bigger belly
>>749424385i just asked claude code this and it suggested instead to create CLAUDE.md at repo route because claude loads that automatically at the start of every session as well as a small generated API index with every module class and function with description, generated by command so it can't drift out of date

>>749425006>Do I just chalk it up to a learning experience and move onto something new?Yes, but why are you making games for other people. Make games for yourself and share with others
>>749424473>>749424881yes claude.md is always read first. it only reads files it needs, but when it opens a big script to just get a helper function it wastes tokens on every line in that script.a python script would not us any tokens to generate this public and private descriptor files.

How did you guys decide on an art style for your game? Was it dictated by your vision you had in your head of what you wanted to look like, or moreso just a part of the process and limitations of the engine/resources/whether or not you're skilled at 3D art?It feels like a massive decision in how the overall mood of your game is and how it's received at first glance, but everyone I talk to just shrugs it off like they kind of just winged it and didn't really go for a specific art style.
>>749426093For me it's the compromise between what I like and what I can do. Most of my game ideas are inspired by other games so I just use those as starting points. Truth is if you're doing everything as a one-man-army, it's very unlikely you can actually pull off the art style you want as a jack of all trades. Maybe only if you started as an artist already, but definitely not if you were a programmer.

>>749442196Right one has a decent joints for a deformation.I would advice to follow some of these tutorials, some of them are golden, some mediocre, choose any, follow along and learn something cool.https://youtu.be/MxTz8vNY7XEhttps://youtu.be/BAr4EsxLqEghttps://youtu.be/xMkZ0o2M-dghttps://youtu.be/koek6de5hr8https://youtu.be/Rz-HvNhVACwhttps://youtu.be/xbz1ZUC3ywchttps://youtu.be/GiUAmKZRf9Ihttps://youtu.be/OjiwRIE21UA
>>749445425maybe snakeschizo is chickenDMC schizoabout the same issue of stagnation
>>749445325No thanks, AI slop is for uncreative gays
>>749445313That sounds like a fuckload of work
>>749444245Cant you already just open engine made games? No decompiler even needed. Copycat risk if your not making a "funny gimick" game seems overblown desu outside of it flooding the search results with shit
>>749444575Webm is crusty as fuck but should get the idea across, swinging aroudn with the boost is pretty fun.
>>749445630Smol question to someone who love swinging around:Is it possible to make good grappling hook mechanic in a 3rd person game? Could it work with a gamepad?
Why go through the trouble when Claude can one shot this in one hour?
>>749445606Ehhhhh. The system itself is fairly simple, hardest thing was expanding it for mod support while trying to keep things memory efficient.
>>749445579Stfu Luddite
>>749445568>snakeschizowho?>chickenDMC schizowho?

>>749446117I think we NEED /pol/ id system >ID: uQ99SQyC>>749446185oh yeah, forgot about these games! thx
>>749446254>IDThat is what the /bant/ thread is for
>>749445729why would it be any harder to do than a 1st person gameoff the top of my head there's the bionic commando reboot which was dumb but apparently swinging around was good enough but i dont know if its what you're looking for, the other side of the spectrum is that attack on titan fan game that was very popular which was borderline simulation tier before the official attack on titan games started coming out, you could probably find some gameplay today
>>749445373>it would happen by taking your demo and extending it, then releasing before youif the demo was good enough to get stollen you should be able to release something that will be 10 times better than the slop. Then it's just a matter of marketing : followers you get from the demo will basically turn into your personal army and report shit that looks like your game but isn't
>>749446117literally who, nobody is making a snake clone.
>>749445568snakeschizo here i dont know who chickenDMC schizo is but we are different schizosbut yeah i have stagnated hardi am considering giving up since i cant seem to finish a fucking model
It’s not ChickenDMC… it’s ChickenGaiden2…

>>749444438Nice quads
>>749444667megaman legends "style" is cool and all but its only suitable for anime
>>749376084How do you guys feel about using ChatGPT codex to help me learn how to code? Is it a good strategy or will it fuck me up in the long run?
>>749448476As long as you ask for references and footnotes and where they are getting the info so you fact check it. I used unreal university to learn unreal, so I hope they taught me right too.
>>749448476The indie games around you are former company workers. They hire ecelebs to market their games. Your game can’t compete with any of that if you don’t have a coding degree.
>>749446117Fuck you my sides.
>>749448476If you're actually looking to learn to code you're not gonna get it from codex. You gotta understand the foundation of it.Try Harvard CS50, it's free and you can find it on youtube.Once you have the basics of how to understand and write code then codex can help you from that point forward.
>>749448428could always download the models from the resident evil games or something
>>749448641Quit being a real penisbuttfag, man. You are really invoking some real penisbuttfag energy over here.
i feel bad for all the people in this thread who have been diligently posting for the past 4 years because now all their progress can be replicate in 30 minutes for 10 dollars in claude credits.genuinely what is the point of making a game if none of your accomplishments matter anymore and a robot can do it better
>>749448757I mean there are people really good a turning corners.
>>749448752In this world, people pay for expo positions and drown out every solo developer who can’t afford. Cancel your codex subscription and use it to pay for the MIX showcase. Anything else and you don’t have a future.
>>749448476you shouldn't be coding in 2026. coding is solvedjust tell the AI what data structures you want (according to compsci that determines the optimal algorithms) or go a step further and just tell it what performance should be likefor example you could say "Make every entity the same struct just like my gigachad carmack, use flyweight pattern for big shared data chunks, update everything with a foor loop, unroll it with duff's device"or you could say "I need to be able to render 1000 different fuckers at 100 FPS, figure it out bitch"
>>749448905Based retardpilled.
>>749448736i tried that once, when i opened up the male protagonist in blender I was surprised how shit the model was lol
Posted last weekend my hallway that i thought looked like shit (top pic related). Thought it looked like a roblox game. I tried to update it and I'm a bit happier with it but to be honest, I still feel like it's not looking great. Also not sure if this is a waste of time and if I am too hyper focused on making this one hallway concept look good. Should I hold off?
>>749448757Because the act of creation is enjoyable.
>>749448936>just tell the AI what data structures you want (according to compsci that determines the optimal algorithms) or go a step further and just tell it what performance should be likeYeah this is exactly why coding is not solved in 2026 kek
>>749449140your lighting is weirdwhats with the glowing red panels?
>>749449217>Yeah this is exactly why coding is not solved in 2026 kekYou mean this is exactly why it is solved. You don't need to be able to code at all. Recall that data structures are abstract concepts which have nothing to do with their implementation on actual computer hardware.
>>749449326My goal was a sort of neon futuristic lighting inside the spaceship. That was the original goal with the red bars. I also tried light blue bars, neither have looked good though. I feel like it's not matching what I'm looking for. This game will be taking place amidst a catastrophic event (think Half-Life) so the red lighting is purposeful, but I'm just at a loss for how to light it properly
>>749449194thats cool but now your chances of financial success went from 5% to 0.5%
>>749437096Your kind of tech illiterate retards shouldnt be allowed online.People are repackaging itch.io games already and selling them as their own
>>749449680anon's 0.5% is better than your 0% chance of financial success, 0% chance of anyone finding you attractive, 0% chance of anyone wanting to remember you after you're gone>I-I was just trollingI don't care. You're worthless and you know it too.
>>749449775Link some
>>749449458half life is more orangy but using floor lights would be better than those giant panels

>>749449813raped that anon
>>749449865Just look at whatever is being recently released on appstore and then look for it on itch.ioBrownies are telling AI to add mobile controls to small games and demos
>>749450126So no links, curious
>>749449680Do you only see the entire world in terms of financial success and winning? That's sad.
>>749449813Yeah ok luddie
>>749450186Oh you're trying to start an argument for no reason
>>749449886>>749449458I'd consider changing the panels too if you want to catch reflection, and making the light fall off toward the end of the corridor
>>749450312>giving AI slop advice
