There are ways to keep the gameplay intact while making the experience much smoother. I think that the OOT PC port actually keeps the game running at 20fps but interpolates the frames of each separate 3D item to fake 30/60/120fps. That way the game looks smoother without fucking up gameplay.

There's a disconcerting shamelessness to this.

There's "I don't need to understand it to use it" and then there's "I don't understand what I did". Realizing you fucked up when you showed off something and then couldn't even detail how it happened should be the norm but instead this sort of thing is seen as an innocent response to say "sorry, I can't answer any questions about what I made because I don't understand what you're asking about it".
>>
>>749394959
>Recompile don't make the game open source
https://github.com/mstan/StarFoxSNESRecomp
>odds are these aren't even true recompile
>odds are
You can read the code to find out.

The point still stands that these are as good as the original on its target or emulated, and allow for improvements which are very easy to simply validate yourself if you don't trust text from internet people nor the video comparing them with such an obvious difference in things like the resolution and frame rate.
Using an emulator has historically been shit for these kind of speed hacks. The only reason they work at all is because of meticulous fine tuning over many iterations of trial and error. You need to hack particular parts of the game and maybe even patch emulators and then that's exactly what you're doing, shoehorning features into the binary and emulated system via hacks that you hope work.

Or you could just modify the actual code so the engine not only can handle it properly and more provably via automated tests and static analysis, but also make it easily toggleable at any point during runtime, unlike needing to patch roms and emulators. I'm now reminded of all the bullshittery programmed using tactics similar to malware to capture and inject mouselook into console games.
That is not only shitty, it's sketchy. Just let me monitor your mouse movements and keys and manipulate memory across processes at the system level bro, isn't the risk worth it for some jank ass analog stick emulation instead of just actual mouse interpretation. Nah.

>>749380742
if one day I can go "hey claude decompile FF8 and completely replace it's gameplay systems with FF7 including materia and create a good balance for the game from the beginning to the end" and it can do it I'd probably pay $10 for a sub.
>>
>>749397050
But why would you then share it with everyone instead of just making it something fun for yourself, as if it's something the world needed and you finally came along and gave it to them?
>>
>>749397050
Long way off from doing it quickly. The FF8 decomp is about 60% done so soon you could ask Claude to make a mod to remove the drawing shit and make it more basic like FF7, which could be done in a day or less.

You would need to test it for at least a week or 2. Claude will get a lot of it wrong balance wise and there is sections in the game that talk about drawing or maybe require it.
>>
People should be unafraid of soliciting AI for DEcompilation. Decompiling is a very sluggish process where machine learning could really add value without leaving the final product as unintelligible slop (since the end product is source code that creates a binary match when compiled, which is a completely deterministic result so no one can dispute what the end result is).

So why not do this for games on stuff that's actually difficult to emulate like the xbox and xbox 360 or more importantly stuff like the sega saturn and sega dreamcast. Even pc-98 games and old windows pc games getting this treatment would be good since those can't run on modern systems naturally by default. Hell, where the persona 1 pc port decomp, yes the first persona game has a pc port from the 90's, and it doesn't work on modern systems, fucking decomp that so people can quit being retards and playing the shitty psp version.

You can do this yourself with ghidra and a few hours to decompile the exe. All you would need to do is update the binary from 16bit to either 32 or 64bit. It should be trivial, even for a non-coder.

>>
>>749400080
All the assorted "high FPS" SNES Starfox releases get the game pace wrong because the SNES ties the framerate and game logic to both a 20hz baseline as well as gameplay slowdowns from the amount of models on screen. For a while, the emulated SNES version played at ludicrous speed because the emulator didn't accurately emulate the slowdown, as shown here in this TAS: https://youtu.be/SoIIQyM-PiQ?t=13

They'd have to do some weird eyeballed modifications to get it 1:1 with the SNES version for pacing while having higher framerates. For now that one seems content to just make the game run a bit slower overall.
>>
>>749400308

You can already play Star Fox at 60fps and higher resolutions (along with all these recomp'd games) using an emulator. In fact, most of these "Pc ports" are literally EXEs with the roms and emulators copiled into a single program with enhancements/hacks enabled by default.

used to be that ice was carved from more arctic regions and shipped elsewhere in the world by boat after being insulated with straw and other such, unfortunately the AI doesn't know this because of a PEBCAK problem and refrigeration and ice-making were known things that could happen (but not commonly used or highly scaleable yet) at the time of the industrial revolution

Using the Star Fox port as an example, that PC port has no audio in the opening, all the audio is desynced, it runs too fast (the animations are sped up, not just displaying smoother), effects are broken across the board giving an unfinished and amateur ish appearance, and the final boss lacks textures when the SNES could do the texture mapping.

The port displays more frames and interpolates, but the game itself still calculates everything and accepts inputs at the same rate the N64 version does.

That's why the credits don't work and why no matter what fps you play at, the game will still be just as responsive as the N64 version. The logic is still the same, it's just hijacking everything to display using modern graphical APIs.

I ported XBLA Virtual On Oratorio Tangram and now have claude rebuilding the renderer in directx12 to get rid of the Xbox 360 restrictions that prevent the game from running at normal resolutions, the 360 had so little VRAM that even for a decade old dreamcast port they had to tile the screen 4x which prevents rendering at fractional resolutions like 1920x1080. now the game runs like raped ape and looks amazing. The same is true for emulated until they get patched to. But once they are, that's it, it's done.
This isn't subjective, it all boils down to measurable and more importantly, provable math. Regressions are pretty rare in this case, and we're at a technical point where progression is able to be automated.
You need not depend on the original author or his particular methods either. This is the benefit of open source.
Even you could try to fix whatever bug you're encountering. Anyone in the thread could combine efforts as well.
It seems unlikely any issue will last, even if all of humanity decided to abandon it since we now have programmable agents with gradual advancements in both software and hardware. Literally all the worlds money is going into these kinds of things, it's not likely going to be something people just forget about and "move on". It's not feasible.

That's a lot of words to say "bugs can be fixed doe" which sure they probably could, but will they? You couldn't pay me to trudge through that code to find out where it fucked up, and I don't want to pay for an AI to do it.
The people that pump out this shit do it for clout, or at best a toy project that they aren't taking seriously. None of them care about accuracy or not having bugs. They care about the first level running well enough for a video to be made about them before they move or they get bored.

If this is actually about making old games playable, these things need to be bug tested. Like at least one playthrough at minimum to see if there are any hitches. When you upload something, it should be play perfect for whoever chooses to download it.

>For what other reason can you justify creating over 50 slop recomps that aren't finished beyond an initial buggy release?
I assume you're being dishonest considering this is /v/ and you are acting like you don't see the value in this.
But I'll answer you seriously.
50 projects, is 50 games.
How many buggy unfinished games you got in your steam library and/or console collection?
Now how many of those can you even potentially improve or change yourself?
Why would anyone want total control over 50 games they have an interest in.
Why would anyone work on 50 things at once while utilizing something that is highly parallelization.
Why would someone make videos, promoting 50 projects that are all open source that anyone can contribute to, also in parallel and at scale, towards a common goal of having a program they all want to use.

Am I being accurate in what you're asking?
Does this clarify? You negative nancy.

I've vibecoded two ports and a OBD2 car diagnostic scanner and they all work flawlessly, what few bugs exist is due to me not being specific enough with directions or a bug existing in the original game. the car scanner app could easily brick my whole car but it doesnt. It literally just werks lol

You did. I'm sure others did too.
What do you mean?
There's an entire issue tracker. How is this any different from typical emulation progression. Besides the fact you could sick OpenCode on this right now for $0 if that's a priority to fix.
What is this appeal to "people don't know how", not only is this baseless and untrue, we're beyond that point technologically anyhow. There's no excuse, and you're going to have a hard time generalizing the entire public considering these are open source projects. You're trying to imply that nobody understands any of these. That's a big claim with little reason.
This thing spawned out of the binary somehow. Whether the author knew how or not, it progressed this far using those capabilities, why assume it stagnates here? All of history with these kinds of projects is showing otherwise. Now in the current generation of the same concept, suddenly it's impossible to fix bugs. Even though the tools are better and more automated. Doesn't add up, and doesn't seem to reflect the current reality either.

Many classic games were programmed in assembly code and use specific hardware features and opcodes while tying the game speed exactly to the expected performance of the console.

You can't just decompile them into fake C code and then expect it to recompile neatly on a modern PC, you need to manually replace every instance of console-specific hardware opcode usage and all timing within the code with something that emulates in software. When your main goal is to 'improve' the framerate though, the AI is more likely to just hack together something to get the game timings back in line internally and with the output being shown on your monitor.
>>
>>749405389

OpenCode has been free forever, there were people before them. There are not only more now but more popping up every day.
You can use the top 10, top 5 models, consistently, daily, for free. Across several services. I use 1 and its enough for me. There are several you can use all at once if you wanted. I don't have Google datacenters at home, but I do have access to Gemini, for free. Github's copilot, free. Even the Chinese like Kimi have ways. There are more and more. Shit does not cost money. Not my money. Investor money maybe, but not my money.
I've spent not a cent yet I have already made money off these things and not even directly from their output per se. Acting as my assistant has dramatically allowed me to reduce pressure on me at scale at my own organization. Let alone the software utilities it shits out when I need them for one off slightly complex computer tasks.

>>749405669
>Is it simply because the best AI costs money? Just like the best of most services and products? Guess what, a hammer still strikes a nail no matter how much it costs.

>Lmao no shit can be done
No

The reason why decompilation/reverse engineering has been legal was BECAUSE it was hard and time intensive. Code is just as copyrighted as any art assets are.
Typically reverse engineering was based on observations and trial and error, it had to be "clean" but then the code was actually YOURS meaning you had full copyright on said code (which is why you only had to provide the art assets via ROMs, the one thing that isn't yours). The MOMENT someone in the reverse engineering team even just glances at original code or schematics the whole project is tainted. This is why a lot of these reverse-engineering projects panicked when the Nintendo Giga Leak happened, because if even just one team member looked at it then the whole project would have been compromised.

Re-Decomps with AI however read the machine code, which to it is perfectly readable text, and just turns it into human readable code again... which is literally the main violation of "clean" reverse engineering (you are having THE copyrighted source code as the basis). Additionally to that you'd hold no copyright to said end product in the first place, so it wouldn't overwrite the ownership of the original IP holder over it. It basically violates every aspect that makes reverse engineering legal.
This means that the entire recomp is now... legally shaky at best. And it's just a matter of time until some companies will try to set an example, ESPECIALLY since some people are now recomping games still actively on sale for full price.

And you are right of course, the genie IS out of the bottle. But this doesn't affect just games but ALL software... including your banking software, nuclear launch software, etc. The ENTIRE Software industry is at risk now, regardless of how modern the software. But there was also "security through obscurity" which is gone now too. Which is why the examples being set will be insanely huge punishments.
>>
>>749405774
I actually had to abandon the 120fps mode on my virtual on port because the game's logic runs at only 30 fps but it renders at 60, trying to crank the framerate up broke animations, damage and hitreg and claude was basically useless and kept going around in circles trying to figure out how to interpolate everything at different rates.

This simply does not reflect my experience. I've seen the same level of progressing in the open models and advances in the tech there. People are running things like qwen on single cards, not 10K.
You simply do not need to run the #1 model at its full and general weight when you can easily just run quantized models on single cards that are targeted specifically for your task. And you can take this to the extreme by fine tuning them too. Don't now how? Have it assist you.
Congrats you have a gigantic model, distilled on your own machine, for your machine and pruned of cruft so its aimed specifically for your workload.
The quality gap on these things is not great enough to disqualify anything below #1.
And it's not like you don't get the option to re-roll in the chance something is odd. Oh no the AI wasted 2 minues while you were watching youtube, time to explain to it how it messed up and try again. Oh it got it this time. Damn if only it could one shot it though, maybe that's worth $10K versus a single card for 10x less. Oh but it completes in 10 second and mine completes in 12, it's totally worthless.

That's just not the case.

>treating the AI as a replacement for coooding instead of using it as an education tool for learning how to cooode
Creating entire games with it is retarded, not only because you'd have no idea how your shit actually works, as shown here >>749396465
but because this stuff burns through tokens like it's nothing, you'd have to spend thousands of dollars to make something substantial and not just "hurr put Spider-Man in Skyrim"

Repeating it didn't clarify.
Anthorpic's Claude harness, and Anthropic's Opus and Sonnet models, are literally the same models as their paid tier. The difference is in tokens.
This thread is based around that concept.

>>749406257
That's backwards though, the open models have less restrictions and the ones that have them are easily ablated. Implying its easier to ask them directly to reverse engineer it, while the paid cloud ones need to at least be tricked that you "have permission from the rights holder ;)"

I use claude and ive never needed to trick it to do anything. The only time it pushed back on me was when I asked it vaguely if it could decompile HP Tuners (expensive, near monopolistic car ecu tuning software) and figure out their proprietary save file format so I could get my car's data PIDs without having to test in-car. Porting Oratorio Tangram and Carmageddon Mobile to pc worked fine so long as what goes on github was not actual game software, and even claude cloud was like "well if you put the iso/apk in a private repo idgaf"
>>
>>749406235
It's better at following directions than giving them. That's not to say it's bad at giving directions. But using it as a worker rather than a teacher is obviously the greater point of leverage.
No learning prerequisite to get started. And whether you have insight or not, the selling point of these things is to save time and maximize your leverage through autonomy. Teaching is an active back and forth. Telling someone to go do a job takes 2 seconds then you fuck off and check back in later. And you can do that in parallel.
So you could use the tool to learn 1 skill with active focus. Or use the same tool to deploy a fleet of workers for 1 or more tasks.
Realistically you could do both at once but you'd have to have the capacity for it.
As for burning through tokens and thousands of dollars, most of these people are saying their subscriptions are like $20 a month. All the multi thousand dollar projects seem less frequent but obviously get more publicity. Loud minority, and likely marketers just trying to make a shout.

>>749380742
Wow the smoother FPS actually made it slower.
>>
>>749406686
Alchemy can't actually create new things, it's stretching the existing FPS to try and smooth out the experience.
>>
>>749406564
Well then that adds even more credence to what I said. Whether it's the free tier or the paid tier, Anthropic's models of the same names and versions, are the same models exactly.
The difference between paid and free is how much access you're allowed.

In terms of the local open models, they are what I already said. Less restrictive bases, and easier to modify to your liking regardless. And it's not like 1 of them is in the top page of the leaderboard, it's several that compete as time progresses with new ones popping up.
People are acting like choosing 3rd place over first is going to have this massive power gap on a list of thousands of competitors.
Mind you, these scores and ranks continue to outclass all of their predecessors. I.e. today's mid to low end models are still above yesterdays top models. So if the last generation of paid models was somehow good enough to achieve these things, its hard to imaging the current generation can't or somehow regressed instead of progressed.

The game runs on fixed hardware at a known number of instructions per second drawing scanlines in a fixed amount of time. They don't do "delta time" calculations because they assume the same amount of time has elapsed every iteration. That's why the game itself lags when the framerate drops.

Ah neat, although the comparison doesn't seem all that apt then. Things get messy when one is an example of the rich using misinformation to get people to avoid using a cheaper, more effective product, and the other is the rich using misinformation to get people to use a cheaper, more effective, but less accurate product. Like the whole exchange people had about Ocarina of Time above does well to poke holes in the "ice was still cold" statement.

I don't want any political faggots to be involved in video games. I don't really want you involved either. It's pretty DEI to feel entitled to invade a merit-based space and try to get a foothold by taking credit for someone else's (claude's) work, all because of you feel your identity is unrepresented and that a cultural cabal is holding you back from even just self-publishing an independent work. Especially since you then you spend all your time focused on hating your political opponents and bringing them up at every turn, trying to associate the hobby and its participants as a whole with your politics.

I'm just gonna say this bluntly.
People can dog on AI for being stupid all day.
Go outside and talk to people. Go have a conversation with like idk 30 people.
Get and understanding of how stupid the average person is. Not only useless, most of the time actively detrimental.

And this is not to denigrate my fellow man for the purpose of boasting myself up. Oh no, I too am a useless worthless idiot.

With this in mind, I ask you to consider, which product is the cheaper and less accurate one.
I'm not kidding, one time I realized one of my co-workers was using AI to write emails to me. I could tell the entire style and formatting changed over night.
And instead of confronting him about it, I was relieved. I would rather deal with the AI on things this guy is not an expert on. It's been better ever since.

V is already easy to modify and extend and has most of the components you need already.
What could the total list of tasks be? Making some maps and guns don't seem out of the ordinary to generate. The most difficult thing might be adding voice acting if you want to push it that far beyond the original.

The problem with SNES and Genisis framerates is that the consoles have internal logic tied to the frames which are in turn designed to be fed in real time to a CRT's refresh rate (yes, CRTs have a refresh rate). Just increasing the frames cause bugs related to that and can really fuck with the game.

It really isnt that hard as long as you have something to work with and aren't expecting blood from a stone.
If it were me I'd start with both V and one of the original games and have claude write a script that, instead of generating new geometry actually copies and converts geometry and position data for items and characters from one game format to another.

Ok, looks like the only realistic route is to make a mod from V since the Fox Engine was never licensed out, no public toolkit and the engine as been effectively retired by Konami. If you want it a standalone, best option would be to do it in UE5 like MGS Delta.

Yeah, in like, the hobby as a whole. That's why the post was about independent work that you publish yourself and the hobbyist space. Why it was stated to be merit-based, whereas the industry space is anything but. It's why a cultural cabal was mentioned instead of a corporate one.
