What went so right in Japan between 1995 and 2000 that it produced so many edgy, experimental and emotionally intense IPs in such a short span of time, usually under less than ideal circumstances?
>>749404328>edgy, experimental and emotionally intense IPs>look inside>books with jpgs
Shit economy
>>749404381formerly known as picture books
>>749404381The Squaresoft library on the PS1 is too large to fit on a single image.
>>749404328its not that different to what happens these daysthe only difference is ecelebs are shilling to you that old stuff and never even try to comb through the new stuff, or anything post 2016 for that matter, so you personally never see that kind of stuff anymore
>>749404878What games are you thinking of, anon...don't...don't tell me you're thinking of shit like Disco fucking Elysium lmaooo
>>749404997>shit like Disco fucking Elysiumthats westoidalso massively shilled by ecelebs, so you're kinda proving my point if that's the best example you can think of
>>749404328>edgyDunno about experimental, but they still love edge as far as I can tell.
>>749404328Akiha owes me sex
>>749404328People were less retarded back then
>>749404328Every one saw evangelions popularity and wanted to copy it
Japan really likes the visuals of classrooms being bathed in the orange of the setting sun.
>>749405470The fading of youth.
>>749405470you ever see a sunset before? it's beautiful but also really annoying when driving that direction
>>749405470They actually stay at school doing club activities until the sun sets so it's probably not a rare sight for them.
>>749404328It was fucking nothing compared to the end of the bubble years.
>>749404328Their strong supernatural beliefs and rich folklore are probably why they can pull off horror with an urban fantasy settingBut CCTV and smartphones basically killed that idea off, so nothing nowadays can come close to the urban legends from that era
>>749404328Lost decade due to property investment bubble collapse caused by a retarded rivalry in the bank of Japan.
>>749405696So it's a conspiracy theory that the USA basically ordered them to LTG their economy because it was uncomfortably close to surpassing theirs?
Why do sunsets mog sunrises so hard even though they are the same thing but in opposite directions?
>>749404328In my experience the attitude of the west in writing games is:"These characters should represent our ideals of how we want heroes to be, and our villains should represent ideas we dislike."Whereas Japan leans more towards"These stories should reflect humans as they actually exist, with flaws and inner conflicts."
>>749405797because waking up is annoying and going to bed is peaceful
>>749405692You can set a story in any decade you want. You can even make your story set in an alternate timeline where phones never existed. I don't think that's as big a problem as you're suggesting.
>>749404328Evangelion
>>749404328They were miserable because of their shitty economy; I think the suicide rate peaked in 1998. Their output therefore had that edge to it, not always but sometimes experimental like NGE, or Lain; even the music had an apocalyptic feel, check out Ground Zero. Tsukihime is definitely Type Moon’s darkest release when you consider the last two routes.
>>749404328>1995 and 2000More like 2000-2009.
>>749404328What went wrong since? They really stopped trying
>>749406019Gacha completely obliterated the eroge market which was a major testing ground for the sort of experimentation and edginess that we're talking about in this thread.
>>749404469FF8 is Square's only good game. Also, I don't know what a PS1 is. Is that like a PSX?
>>749405920More like 1991-2011>>749406019New generation not having to deal with the lost decade and its economy, probably
>>749406158I prefer Nintendo’s Ultra 64 personally; I think he means the PSone though, you know, the little PSX
>>749404328The economy, stupid.
>shit economy equals great artWhere's all the great art in our present, then?
>>749406304Well, uhh… it’s like, uhhhh
>>749406304Can't be that simple. It was a golden few decades now everything is shit
>>749406304Working without compensation is a massive act of trust. Not gonna happen in the low-trust modern West. In Japan maybe it is (was) still possible.
>>749404381>book>most enduring, venerable, respected medium of all time>add picture and sound to book>duuuhhhh bad
>>749406019Yeah it's weird how Japan just peaked in the 1970's to 1990's and that shit's over. I quit learning Japanese because honestly the country hasn't made anything great in 20 years
>>749406585Book illustration used to be a prestigious artform even here in the west. Doré, Rackham, Aubrey Beardsley...
>>749405747Reagan forcing the proper exchange rate on USD to JPY was something that had to be done eventually, considering the Japanese economic miracle relied heavily on the post-war locked in rate as well the country engaging in economic dumping that actually began hurting US production. Yes, the USA's action against the fixed rates was partly why property values and investment rates were out of whack to begin with, but the Bank of Japan could have eased into it overtime and made adjustments, but they were essentially paralyzed by intraorganization factional friction.
>>749406740Do you have any book recommendations for economic history? Preferably something that is comprehensible to laymen.
Unironically the booming manga industry, being curated by editors who had to pick the best of the best while students submitted shit tons of ideas for contests. The west was peaking in culture as well, the best of sci fi cinema had aired, the best of cultured literature, the best of music had reached the sweet spot between experimental and commercial. Stuff like Xenogears is nothing but references to mecha anime of all kinds, then they turn up the edgy shit to eleven for maximum rule of cool. The issue today is that devs just want commercial success because the industry is huge already. There's a shit ton of corporate constraints to rule what you have to put in order to use the storefront, the culture has stagnated. Imagine the most creative shit you could come up today is "Isekai Hogwarts" and that's gonna be Xenoblade 3. Like, what other culturally relevant IPs have grown during the 00s? Avatar? You're gonna make some compensated dating game with blue gyaru catgirls?
>>749407004Yeah the 00s have been weirdly barren as far as recognizable IPs go, and not just in the gaming industry.
>>749406585I love VNs but even the best ones are nowhere near as good as the greatest literature, literarily, thematically, psychologically, philosophically, and artistically.
Akiha...
>>749404328>1995 and 20001998 to 2003 was the chaos era to be accurate.
>>749404328While pretty much confidential, I like to imagine that the PS1 Net Yaroze helped to nurture a new generation of jp authors with experimental sensibilities.
>>749405692>CCTV and smartphonesYeah. Smartphones in general have killed suspense when everyone has a way to contact anyone or be found and all of that stuff.
>>749405627While I did everything in my power to avoid them and then dropped from high school. I will never understand the nips
>>749404328>1995 and 2000You are thinking 2000-2010
>>749405797at the end of the day the air is fucking loaded with dust and all sorts of aerosols and particulates from both natural and human sources, all of which scatter the light and make a sunset look cooler. also you have more puffy nimbus clouds forming during the day due to heatin the morning you have the opposite: shit has settled overnight, morning fogs mute colors, and gray flat boring stratus clouds dominate the sky
>>749407635What do I read if I want to know my clouds?
>>749406110>Gacha completely obliterated the eroge marketpeak ironic weeb beliefs, mostly because no eroge is getting translated these days either officially or by fan translation
>>749407425Holy borefest
>>749407425Holy kinofest
>>749407772You played Rance 03?
>What went so right... no normies, no fag, no moralist, no "muh representation..." everyone have freedom of expression instead of "this thing will offensive somebody..." that hinder of creativity
>>749407851sorry your favorite eceleb and pisscord group is not recommending you any eroge beyond alicesoft games and maybe two of the mainstream eushully games anonlearn to look up games by yourself
>>749407772This. Every couple of months I import about 10 eroge and theres always new, fresh and interesting offerings. Ill usually have to decide one what to leave behind and what to buy, but yes there is plenty of choice.
>>749404328No left ideology
Can't wait for the zeitgeist to become edgy as fuck again.>nothin personnel kid
Dude denpa lmao
>>7494074252/3 of those are nitroplussies
>>749407702Cloud Atlas
If you make an edgy game these days, people will dox you into removing the edge.
>2D art layered on top of IRL photosSovl...
>>749409127
>>749409159
>>749409146You are forgetting the color filter.
>>749407114Lol
>>749409221Obviously post processing is a part of IRL photography.I love how modest Arc's place looks in the original despite being described as a luxury suite, I like to imagine it's because Type-Moon's budget at the time of 5 cups of instant ramen didn't allow for photos of actually expensive places to be taken.
>>749409314Space is at a huge premium in Japan, especially the closer you get to Tokyo. (no idea where the game takes place)
>>749409375I wonder where they shot the CGs for the Tohno mansion.
>>749404328people that grew up with both experimental media and otaku media being able to do their own takes on it.
>>749404328It was less than ideal circumstances
>>749409375original is a fictional city, I think it's supposed to be based on like Chiba or something, but I might be wrong. Remake takes place in a fictional Tokyo ward.
>>749404328Hard times create freaky men
>>749409650Boomers were freaky as fuck and they were born in the easiest of times ever.
>>749406725Asia isn'all that special anymore. They just work long hours, earn too little and they have very bad taste in entertainment.
>>749409127Who is even doing this and why can't they just ignore them? Do people just go around finding shit they don't like and try to bully the creators? Why are these Japanese guys so weak to this stuff, but ignore the people begging for them to not ruin their media
>>749404381VNs are abit different from most books, better to compare them to choose your own adventure books.
>>749404328Because it was a time before slice of life cancer like lucky star ruined everything. Fact.
>>749409993>Why are these Japanese guys so weak to this stuff,If I had to guess, "read the room" culture doesn't adequately prepare you to stand up to masses of idiots that need to be ignored.
