>Insomanic owns the Sunset Overdrive IP
>Sony owns Insomniac after buying them out
>Microsoft owns the publishing rights to the game and all profits from the game being bought on digital storefronts including Steam goes to Microsoft
>The contract they signed before Insomniac got bought out also secured Microsoft having dibs to publish 2 sequels with no expiration
>Also covers derivative works including remakes, remasters, and even ports
>None of this matters because the game didn't do as well as they hoped
>In spite of all this, it's still referenced in Rift Apart
Scenarios like these fascinate me
Anyone got any other examples of legal gridlock?

Marvel made a lot of bad deals in the 90's and early 2000's when they were in desperate need for money.

Pokemon is actually owned by 3 companies.
Gamefreak, Nintendo and Creatures Inc.

>>749423417
bloodborne being in a legal limbo because the studio that owned some of the rights got closed and no one own it
or something like that
>>

I think I played like an hour of this, and the only reason I didn't quit after ten minutes was because of this song. Any other bangers in the OST?

See that's not as bad because all three of them can and have worked together even if it looks weird to an outside observer who doesn't know why Pokemon's more segregated than other "Nintendo IP" (i.e. why the Super Mario Maker costumes didn't have cries, why Nintendo Today didn't start with Pokemon, etc)
It's no different than other Nintendo IPs co-owned between Nintendo and an outside company like Kirby or Fire Emblem minus one extra step

>bloodborne being in a legal limbo because the studio that owned some of the rights got closed and no one own it
Japan Studio was always a studio owned by Sony
Bloodborne isn't in legal limbo, Miyazaki just doesn't have the time to help make a remaster (and the Demon Souls remake allegedly got his disproval and Sony doesn't want to ruin all working relations with him)
>>
>>749423417
I wouldn't call this a headache because nobody at all gives a shit about the franchise, but an interesting gridlock nonetheless.

Speaking of Microsoft, Remedy wanted to unite all their game universes in Alan Wake 2 but because Microsoft owns the rights to Quantum Break they just changed the names of the Quantum Break characters and used them anyway. I thought that was funny.
>>
Kafkaesque
>>
>>749423417
no one knows who actually owns this franchise, so it's abandonware

The proposed Bloodborne remake by Bluepoint too, apparently Miyazaki personally told them to fuck off and since that was their hail mary they had nothing else (they cancelled whatever GAASlop they were working on) and were shutdown

Is there a lore reason?

Several Sonic can't be re-released due to licensing issues most notably Sonic Heroes due to the renderware engine. Sega can't re release anybody their GBA games in the west due to THQ publishing them and getting shut down due to backruptancy leaving them in limbo, sega doesn't own the rights to Sonic Pocket Adventure and arent even allowed to acknowledge it at all bot even in print
>>
>>749423930
The difference is IS and HAL pretty much work exclusively with Nintendo. Game Freak doesn't and kind of doesn't like working with Nintendo. Its also the only game Game Freak makes that actually makes money, so they are stuck with it. It's why when Nintendo suggesting outsourcing some of the work for Pokemon games to address the quality, Game Freak refused. Creature also sides with Game Freak so it ties Nintendo's hands. There will probably be more drama once Nintendo loses its lawsuit against Pocket Pair.
>>
>>749423417
This shit fucking sucked
>>
>>749423417
It was a pretty fun game too
>>
>>749426682
Why would that be?
>>
>>749426682
I think there's also an obvious hesitancy for game freak to cede any control over the games while also at least partially internally recognizing that they don't have the fucking sauce anymore. So they can't give up even a millimeter to Monolith or square because then big N will probably expect that with some regularity, and in no time Game Freak gets jap shamed into some fucking position of "we hold the rights to the games, but other people make the games for us"

Mr Door is just Lance Reddicks character from Quantum Break, a reality hopping entity causing fuckery, and then Shawn Ashmore plays Tim Breaker (Time Breaker) a guy trapped in the Dark Place who talks about his visions of his life in an alternate reality with a different name.
>>

>It's why when Nintendo suggesting outsourcing some of the work for Pokemon games to address the quality, Game Freak refused
Was that in the leaks?
>>
>>749427149
Yeah some document or email of Game Freak being angry that Nintendo suggested asking for outside help. Which is bigger than you might think because it suggests that people at Nintendo have talked about it enough that someone with balls finally came out with it and suggested that Game Freak isn't able to do it by themselves anymore

Dinosaur Planet , there's no way to finish and release this game anymore.
>>
>>749427273
Got a link to verify this?
>>
>>749427965
Nintendo scrubbed it from the internet. Someone on /vp/ might have screenshots but the best I got is polygon, reddit articles, and google ai saying "yeah this happened but I can't legally link to it"

This.

was it even good
>>
Didn't the rights to Kingdoms of Amalur default to the Treasury Board of Rhode Island after everyone else involved in its creation collapsed and were unable to pay back loans?

Then there's Star Control, where one company has the right to the IP, but none of the trademarks for the races or characters, so they need to make a completely different game and call it Star Control and the team who owns those trademarks and is making Star Control 3 can't use the series name.

It's great. The writing is reddit of the highest order, but y'know, 2014 reddit, so for the time it's an earnest time capsule of all that crap, even if it's groan inducing most of the time but it's got charm. It's also the only open world where I never fast traveled because moving around is really THAT fun.

It's not up to him whether future souls games wind up Playstation. Kadokawa and Bamco would port the games to everything.

Stupid nigger, no one is asking for a remake. Fuck niggazaki, nigger is a sold out hack-fraud. Elden ring was lazy dogshit.
>>

>It's not up to him
It is up to him since he's the reason we don't have an upcoming bloodborne remake
>>
>>749431906
I feel like a lot of From Soft's games are like that? A lot of the rights to individual AC and Souls games are tied to different publishers.
>>
>>749431252
Gameplay's great, music is great, the writing seems very reddit on the surface but it loops around into being good for me. I think by the end they know it's written cringe and they play into it.
>>
>>749424543
Yeah I was going to mention NOLF too. It's sucks it can't at least be put up on GOG or something? It's abandonware now so just download it off the NOLF website that has both games.
>>
I assume the publisher of Guilty Gear 2: Overture got ahold of the rights to the ip, and that's why ASW had to pivot to only Blazblue for like a decade until they got the Guilty Gear rights back.

Any collab with Evil Dead due to the license being all over the place, the biggest example being the cancelled DLC for Mortal Kombat 11.

I think I found the biggest headache of them all.
>Both Alex Ahad (the artist) and Mike Z (lead programmer), the co-creators of the IP went their own ways
>Konami held publishing rights until they sued Autumn Games, leading to a complete breakdown of relations.
>The original development team (Reverge Labs) splits and forms Lab Zero. Lab Zero later collapsed and turns into Future Club.
>Autumn Games links up with Hidden Variable to make a mobile version of the game.
>Autumn Games cuts ties with both Hidden Variable and Future Club. Opting to work on Skullgirls inhouse instead.
>Only the mobile game survives, which is completely cucked and owned by Feminists.

>Rift Apart
No it's not?
>>
>>749431252
Its bad, the writing is all the bad jokes from the 2010s mixed with every bad gun from Ratchet and Clank. It doesnt help there giant TV screens in the city playing dev interviews to destroy your immersion.
>>
>>749423417
Only thing coming to mind is Payday 2
Overkill and Starbreeze didn't own the full rights to Payday 2, 505 Games owned some of it
in 2015, they introduced "Safes" Loot boxes that you had to pay for a Drill/key to open and get skins
There was big backlash against this but they couldn't remove them for legal reasons
After getting full ownership of the IP in 2016, they worked over the system and now "Safes" that drop are opened for free
>>
What's up with Bayonetta? Could a theoretical Bayonetta 4 be multiplat?
>>
Goldeneye. Microsoft (owning Rare) and Nintendo (their game) could get along if need be but the rights to James Bond game distribution is apparently its own fucking dissertation.
>>
>>749437130
SEGA owns the IP but Nintendo owns the sequels they published (2,3 and Origins).

So a Bayonetta 4 could go multiplat if Nintendo themselves aren't involved with it.
>>
>>749436696

Indefinite publishing rights for an IP you don't even own is fucking stupid

>Microsoft wanted to do a remake in 2009 for XBLA
>Had to consult Nintendo because of their publishing rights
>Had to consult with MGM, The rightholders to the Bond movies
>Had to consult Sony/Columbia, the at the time production company behind Bond
>To top it all of had to deal with the Broccoli estate as well
I dont blame them for just saying fuck it and cancelling it

>AVP1 is on Steam
>AVP3 is on Steam
>2 isn't
The game runs on a proprietary engine that Monolith made and was released under Fox, Monolith then got bought by Warner Brothers, later on Disney bought Fox and with it AVP, but WB and Disney don't like each other so a rerelease still hasn't happened. I guess theoretically Disney could pay Aspyr or Nightdive to reverse engineer it, but they seemingly don't care enough; AVP seems to be completely dead, maybe Disney wants to merge the two through some other way, considering the synth with the fat ass in Badlands is Weyland Yutani made in the new Predator movie.
Luckily the game works on modern systems with fanpatches and people even still play the MP via community servers.
