I didn't expect Dead Rising of all things to get me emotional. I love the writing in this game.

the first DR was the perfect mix of "zombie movie silliness" and the like more hard-hitting 28 days later music stuff that zombie movies actually imply
feels like later games got too goofy

Don't mind me, just copypasting a post I made on another DR thread a week ago:
I love how creepy the last section of DR's plot genuinely feels, starting with Carlito's death and giving Isabela his locket. For the first time in the entire game you have no quest marker to guide, rather you've given sparse scenes while you're desperately rushing back to the Security Room as you see Jessie freaking out over the glowies pulling a Half-Life, the Spec Ops threatening her, her turning into a fucking zombie, the survivors all being gone, the entire mall being completely empty from zombies which gives it this eerie feeling, the last in-game hour you probably spend alone in the helipad waiting for Ed, just kinda... sitting there, taking it all in, thinking how different things were three days earlier when you first landed and had no idea what you were getting into. And then Overtime Mode, with the same empty mall with psycho Spec Ops trying to murder you but now also with proto-drones, a sewer(?) tunnel chock-full of zombies, Brock pulling a "yeah I know what I do is fucked up but guess what, humanity's fucked up, we're great at making mistakes, I just deal with it and accept my part in the system", Frank's scream, and then "And yet he complained that his belly was not full".
Sure, Dead Rising was always wacky in a lot of ways, but damn if it didn't take itself incredibly seriously. Brad's death scene is 10/10, and optional at that because the devs trusted in players caring enough about him to try and find him down there. But like Saints Row, what started as "serious narrative with the comedy coming solely from the wacky gameplay" slowly devolved into "wacky world with wacky characters and a wacky plot". Oh well.

>As soon as Brad gets his hands on that terrorist, I guess it'll be case closed, huh?

>>
>>749431741
I think 2 had the perfect balance. The game was incredibly silly but some parts felt genuinely tense. The emotional stakes between Chuck and Katie also worked really well, and was implemented into the gameplay in a way that worked really well.
>>
>>749431712
Reminder Jeff and Natalie are in the game's cover.
>>
>>749431452
Because the game takes itself wholly seriously, the silly stuff is relegated entirely to how you can interact with the mall and the zombies ie putting Servbot masks on their heads or taking Erotica pics of their cleavage. The characters react like they would in reality, half the scenes take place in the same security room but it never grows old because Jessie and Brad are engaging throughout due to how they react to their situation in a way that makes all the sense in the world. The epitome of the "larger than life" characters are still incredibly grounded comparatively with the sequels, like a mall clown or an overweight cop. Compare it with Slappy or Randy or Evan from 2, or just the existence of TIR as a whole. Feels like a far wackier world than the 'close to reality' existence of DR1.
>>
>>749432557
well, I think 1 had the perfect balance already

Anon 2 starts with a TV show about rounding up thousands of zombies to be killed with chainsaw motorbikes while at the same time there's a hippie group asking for zombie rights. It's a far cry from "regular people trapped in a regular mall" looking to escape the genuinely spooky zombies that can kill them any second.
>>
>>749437512

I hate how every zombie game always has to have the most insane gimmick. Like dead island takes place on an island and plays like an “immersive sim (First Person RPG)” with leveling. L4D is quite literally a game inspired by a co-op zombie mod in cs:s/hl2dm. Deadrising had too much padding when it came down to traversing the mall, you’re definitely not going to save everyone the first time around. I think playing this game on a CRT, gave me an entirely different vibe than playing it on an LCD. CoD zombies is CoD zombies, it doesn’t need its gimmick explained. Dying light had parkour. The whole genre is weird, man.

Deadrising is obviously going to be considered a classic by zoomies since there weren’t really many better zombie games to choose from. But if you like it for its insane bosses, there are a plethora of games from that era that are nearly exactly like it. Basically every B game has them. God Hand is a prine example but of course zoomies wouldn’t call God Hand a B game.

Also resident evil is a point and click adventure game with tank controls. That’s it. It’s truly an NPC’s fever dream if they were capable of having dreams with their lack of sentience.

Yeah but if you’re going to argue that it doesn’t have gimmicks, you should also analyze it for any technicalities that it may have to be fair. It’s like they require a gimmick to receive that sweet sweet blackrock money and since they tried (the word is tried) to go for a gimmickless game despite having way too much story for its own good, they had to not call them zombies by definition.

Ellie was more 'active' in that she had a whole bunch of triggers around the levels where she'd comment on stuff and you were prompted to talk back if you noticed. Then you played as her. It was meant to create a "bond" with the player, thus the Elizabeth comparison.

It is genuinely a better experience if you watch the 20 minutes worth of cutscenes on YouTube instead of playing it. Wild how you're pressed for time in every other game meanwhile in Case West you *want* the timer to go down but you need to sit there for like 20 real life minutes because you don't give a shit about exploring the boring lab further or about rescuing the Phenotrans "survivors".

>>
>>749445734
It has stages you traverse through, climbing obstacles, dealing with enemies and solving minor puzzles. It has a variety of weapons you can freely use, aim and shoot. It has ammo, it has health bars, it has companion and enemy AI, it has stealth, it has unlockable costumes, it has game overs. It's a fucking videogame, regardless of what you or I may think about the game-to-cutscene ratio. Thus "you can think a game to be bad and not say something like it's not a videogame".

I remember this other thread where anons were saying they could easily survive Dead Rising, and then someone else stated that it's harder than it looks like, and it's true. Some missions are just suicidal, like the one where Frank has to go through the maintenance tunnel and get the bombs while the hordes of zombies fill the entire place to the brim and, to top it off, Carlito is trying to run you over with a truck the whole time. Frank making it out alive from that one is a huge feat.
>>
>>749446875

OtR Frank is just a quippy asshole that doesn't take anything serioulsy and would've made one-liners about Cliff had he been in DR1.

Hell no, Frank in OtR is only an asshole if you treat him like an asshole, the quippy oneliners are mostly reserved for the psychopats that outright started the beff with him or didin't bat an eye to killing survivors, frank being kind of a bitter ironic asshole makes sense in the story context considering that he ened up being a washed up celebrity, hell the game starts as him wrestling zombies just to get zombrex money, anyone would turn into a bitter asshole, and even like that he was still a stand up guy looking out for the truth.

Yeah, no, OtR completely missed the point of his character, he's literally a comic-relief version of his former self. A manifestation of the 'meme Frank' that the internet sort of created after all his unintentional goofiness in the first game. Shit like Watchtower or DR4 is built upon OtR's foundations with people believing Frank is SUPPOSED to be like his OtR self. Frank in DR1 has a character arc in which he goes from that slimy, jackass, fameseeking paparazzi to a heroic, truth-seeking photojournalist. He enters Willamette wanting the whole world to know his name, and he leaves Willamette wanting the whole world to know what really happened and who was responsible not just for Willamette but also Santa Cabeza. This character development is reflected in Frank's updated design the next time we see him after Dead Rising 1, which is Case West where he's wearing Carlito's locket. It's unclear why Frank has the locket instead of Isabela, but it's pretty clear why he wears it. Carlito may have been a terrorist who caused a zombie outbreak that killed 50k people, but he was also a victim that struck back at the government that used his family and entire town as a proving grounds farm without caring for the cost. As Carlito is dying from his wounds, Frank is sympathetic enough to comfort him with the knowledge that the world *will* know what really happened to Santa Cabeza. After the fact, Frank wears the locket to signify his renewed purpose as a photojournalist, as a reminder of why he does what he does, bringing the people the truth and holding the people at the top accountable.

And that is reflected in Case West, where he feels like a natural follow-up to his DR1 character arc, going after the people at the top, Phenotrans, to help the regular people... then Off the Record sends Frank back to the start of his DR1's self ie a slimy, fameseeking paparazzi, a washed-up celebrity whose only concern with the most recent zombie outbreak he's in is that it could relaunch his career. You could try and argue that Frank falling victim to the celebrity life is in line with DR1's social commentary? But it's entirely lame to have a character's entire development completely undone, and all of Frank's appearances going forward until the series dies with DR4 are him as his OtR self. Worse versions of his OtR self, but evolutions of it nonetheless. And that version of Frank West is a callous, wisecracking jackass who will do anything it takes to get his scoop. OtR Frank has a one-liner for every situation, every survivors you save, every skill move you perform, every location you can visit ("In the Closet? Yeah, this is my favorite place to be" HAHAHA). It is literally Dead Rising 4's baby Hitler.
Take the Psychopaths, specifically: a cool change from Frank to Chuck was how the latter was considerably more dismissive and less sympathetic towards his Psychos due to how different a person he was. Frank in DR1 usually tried to reason with his Psychopaths, Joy or Kent or Steven, and he never took joy in their demise no matter how evil they were or how much trouble they gave him. Chuck would rarely and barely try to reason with his and would usually be so unaffected by their deaths afterwards he'd crack a joke about it ("Yeah, you're on fire"). Then in OtR Frank just acts the exact same way Chuck did in DR2, he's dismissive, he's impatient, and he's always got a quip in the chamber to the point he pulls two back to back with the final fucking boss ("Always thought you had a crush on me", "Too bad I don't dig flat chicks").
>>

Dead Rising 2 and consequently Case Zero and West were supervised by the original team and Frank's character is completely in tact for Case West.
>>
>>749448702
Without the context of Chuck's backstory and motivations, this behavior makes Frank seem like he's just an asshole. You could try and make the argument that Frank has gone through similar things that Chuck, but Frank was already hardened by the time Dead Rising 1 begins. It's more than just a funny catchphrase, Frank *has* covered wars. He has performed the most dangerous and noble form of journalism there is. The man had already seen some shit before Willamette but even still, the events there horrified him to the point he finally breaks after the fight with Brock. It doesn't make any fucking sense that he's callous enough in OtR to be able to make jokes about the situation and act entirely different than he did in Case West, nevermind the original game. And the absolute worst moment in the entire game, character wise? Evan, who feels more like a joke than a legitimate attempt to call back to DR1. Frank meets this dude whose brother he fucking killed and his first instinct upon receiving that news is to crack a joke about it, when Adam was one of the saddest Psychopaths in the first game: a children's entertainer who lost his mind after seeing his audience get torn apart by zombies. Adam was dangerous and Frank had to do what he did, but he was by no means an evil individual taking advantage of the outbreak like Jo for example. He was the most similar to Cliff, if anything. Then you get to Evan's phase 2 cutscene where Frank believes he's killed this dude, so he cracks a joke about him being short and starts whistling the fucking Willamette Mall music. Think about the context of the situation. Imagine I shanked your brother in a McDonalds and a couple years later you finally find me, I beat your ass and while you're lying there trying to recover I'm walking away and I start whistling the fucking "I'm Lovin' it" tune. Even if your hypothetical brother had it coming, that's a heartless asshole fucking move.

Off the Record is how Frank imagine's it would go down if he was there, not how it actually would. Lots of people like to fantasize being a quippy action man in such a situation.
>>
>>749448702
And then after the fight is over, Frank goes out of his way to disrespect the clown some more putting his foot on his forehead and shattering him before making another joke at his expense. If this version of Frank fought Cliff instead of silently, respectfully closing the Vietnam vet's eyes he would've said >>749447729. And this isn't just Frank being kind of silly for a non-canon spin-off. This is his personality going forward. This is the version of Frank that Rob Riggle played in Watchtowwer, this total jackass that doesn't care about anything other than being on TV and selling his book:
https://youtu.be/4m81kvgy20Y
And then there's DR4 Frank who feels like how you would naturally write Frank West if your only exposure to him was, wait for it: Off the Record. That's not Frank. Never was, never will be, and people that cheered every time Frank in that game talked like he was in an 80s movie? Like it or not, they led us down this path.

And it still doesn't change the fact most people ate it up, and that went on to be his default canon personality in future appearances. And hell I didn't even mention other stuff less related to Frank as a character like how the fact that the game had to follow 2's script and motion captured cutscenes ends up making Frank come across like a fucking idiot when he believes the news about CURE as if he didn't learn anything about the truth being obfuscated and distorted after his Willamette discoveries being buried. Or just

Original, remake makes it dumbed down a bunch of mechanics, got others wrong and censored parts of the script. The 2016 PC release is a great port.

I used to think the special forces were the coolest thing as a kid, especially with the music. I remember getting a m4 airsoft gun with the grenade launcher attatchment like in the game (despite it being useless). it was my first real step into guns
