Most people had to help their families with their farms or join the military or shit. Making money off drawing was a whimsical dream, the only ones who got through were passionate and crazy enough to do it, it was a sort of self-selection.Nowadays the barrier is lower, so there's a shitload more people doing it just as another job for the money, drowning out the minority who are passionate. They're still around but it's just much harder to find them.
