Why is this game so fucking divisive on /v/? Outside of this place, lots of people call it one of the greatest RPGs of all time, even faggots at IGN. But on /v/ you'd think it's a Pokemon game with how much you guys are split on it
>>
My favorite JRPGs are Tales of Xillia 2, Pokemon R/S/E, and Octopath Traveler 2.
>>
I haven't played 2 but the first one was very mediocre.
>>
It's soulless but technically high quality
>>

The second one is superior, but still has the same fundamental flaws. The combat is good, but not quite good enough to be the entire focus of the game, and everything else is terrible.

NTA, but he's (mostly) right. The combat is great, and it's really the only reason to play these games. Personally, I would say the graphics are also good too, but I recognize that the HD2D style is divisive, so I expect many will not agree with me on that. The story, or lack thereof is where things really fall apart. The entire "Octopath" gimmick remains the worst part of these games, unfortunately. The cost of "being able to pick any of the 8 characters to start with and then recruit the remaining 7 in any order you want" simply comes at too high of a cost to be worth it. As a result of the player being able to pick any character to start with and then recruit the remaining 7 in any order, it makes it impossible for the game to tell a coherent, overall story. So instead, you get 8 individual character stories where the other 7 are literally nonexistent for each character's story. The second game tried to rectify some of this stuff by adding in more tavern scenes, but the problem is too fundamental and baked in to the "Octopath" formula that there's only so much you can do to overcome it. So you play all 8 individual stories, and then suddenly a super boss appears out of nowhere. Again, the second game tried to leave a few more breadcrumbs to try and tie everything together, but it's minimal. The subpar voice acting also doesn't help, neither does the linear dungeons. Again, the combat is great, but everything else is mediocre to poor

Amazing how you wrote all that and completely failed to mention the excellent soundtrack which is absolutely a reason to play these games.
>>
>>749466494
Eh. It's okay. A soundtrack is never a reason to play a game (especially not a 100+ hour JRPG) when you can just stream it. lmao
>>
>>749466517
Okay. So you have no taste. You could have just said that.

HD-2D slop that doesn't have enough budget to do anything impressive or innovative. Plus it's ugly af.

I thought the cat girl was cute, and went with her as my main but the voice was terrible. Then I set it to Japanese and thought the voice was cute, for about 10 minutes because hearing that stupid "oya?" every time her turn comes up drove me crazy

>Extremely ugly
>8 separate characters don't meaningfully interact with each other
This is a big redflag for a JRPG for me.
>Outside of this place, lots of people call it one of the greatest RPGs of all time, even faggots at IGN.
So fucking what? They also gave Last of Us 2 a 10/10, why the hell should we care?
>>
I played this shit for ~6 hours, got four out of eight party members akd realizes I still have another six hours of JRPG tutorials to go until i can start wasting my time with 16 different out of combat party skills on every npc I come across...
Dropped it right there, shit just was not fun to play

i wanted to like it but i've never understood the appeal. the gameplay is extremely repetitive and tedious, specially against bosses. the sidequests are pure filler and deliberately obtuse but if you don't complete them you're permanently underleveled, making fights even more tedious.
the narrative had some moments and characters but the fact the stories are completely isolated from each other with barely any interactions between party members until the very end is really lame.

I'm more surprised by this than /v/ being full of casuals and shitposters. Team Asano games feel like they're made for a very niche kind of boomer jrpg fanatic that can forgive a modern jrpg not having fancy 3D grafix or scenes of the protagonists saying they'll beat the bad guy because of their friendship power.

The dub is pretty good in ot2
>>
Dropped it about 3 years ago, I'm giving it another chance now. I like that the game is open ended and allows you to go mostly anywhere, I'm spending more time exploring than doing story segments, but I'm overleveled in consequence (doesn't help that the game doesn't allow you to bench your main character until you are done with their story).

I think the art style is fine, biomes look nice and the music is chill (to the point I wish I could move for more than 5 to 10 seconds without triggering a random encounter, the ear piercing violin in battles is getting to me).
The combat system is good enough I guess, I like that there's a little bit of customization thanks to secondary jobs. Dungeons are too simple and short, sadly.

Tldr; the game is ok, it's keeping me entertained at the moment.

Yeh. Give me four guys and a eight classes (Bravely Default but no gimmicks, just good gameplay).

Then just listen to the soundtrack, you mouth breathing retard. That's a large bonus, not a direct incentive to actually play any game.

>there is no chemistry among the caste
>the world feels dead. every city is just a node to go to in order to do a situational quest
>the combat, though fun, is too pidgeon-holed. Ochette (and possibly the dancer) is basically mandatory for every team.
>there is no overarching narrative, which makes the game feel random and purposeless
>the boss fights are interesting, but everything else is just a bland spread of jam

I played all 3 in release order this year and Octopath 1 is definitely the best when it comes to the story and setting. They're all good games though I don't understand the mentality of "x isn't as good as y so x is bad" when you're comparing a 8/10 game to a 7/10.

Retard the region he is from is literally inspired by the Wild West and he dresses like an American businessman. He’s also gentle but tough, guy is literally a cowboy. The Japanese version neuters his character, simple as.
