Playing this game in 2026 is jarring, it captured a world that doesn't exist anymore, V is also old but it doesn't feel like this

>it captured a world that doesn't exist anymore
that's the reason I keep replaying it
>>
>>749506281
So like the majority of games before 2015?
>>
>>749506281
It's truly special in that regard
>>
a lot of 00s games did that. vtmb is another prime example.
>>
>>749506414
GTA IV is on another level. Remember it was the most expensive to produce game of all time when it released.
>>
>>749506281
the game is 2 years off being 20 years old OP
>>
It’s funny how GTA IV felt like a proper period piece even when it came out, despite the fact that the time period it featured wasn’t even that far back, but I’ve never got that feeling with GTA V.

Probably the late 00s / early 10s -isms will become more apparent as time goes on, but it’s still a funny thing to notice.
>>
gta iv came out just six years after vice city..
>>
Last good gta. The wokeslop dropping in November will never live up to it.
>>
There's somethign magical about that era
>>
>>749506525
it's taken a long time for people in "that" age bracket to come around to the idea that the late 00's and early 10's have this kind of nostalgic value to them because at the time it was just kind of shit to live through

>>749507180
I like playing around with the idea that, albeit separated by definitional universes and entirely different interpretations of reality, Claude and Niko walked and drove through the same city landmarks within the decade
the city wouldn't really have changed all that much in that time compared to from then to now
that makes my head spin a bit when I put it all on a timeline

>it's taken a long time for people in "that" age bracket to come around to the idea that the late 00's and early 10's have this kind of nostalgic value to them because at the time it was just kind of shit to live through
Eh I don't know about that, I lived through them and to me 2008-2009 was like the beginning of the end for the entire entertainment industry (music, movies, games)
The 2010s were fucking awful, literally worse than right now (edginess is making a comeback somewhat, the 2010s were pure millennial slop)
Early mid 2000s were peak and probably the 1990s too from what I've heard
>>
>>749509348
I used to kind of think this too and then one day I heard Keshas "Tiktok" out of the blue somewhere and I thought "god this wasn't even bad"
it's strange because people who grew up in the 80's, early 80's especially, they know how much it fucking sucked, but they're still intensely nostalgic about it

I think the problem with this era is that it was just a bit lame
terrorism and recession notwithstanding, culture and arts were all the lowest brow they had ever been
perfectly satirized by the advertising on the ingame tv's in GTA IV too

but still there's a comfort in things being just a little bit bad that we don't have now
>>
sheen, this is the third time you posted this thread
>>
>>749506281
I liked how heavy the physics felt in this game, felt like I could ragdoll at any moment.
>>
>>749508453
Chinatown Wars came out after GTA IV and was pretty good.
>>
>>749506757
How the fuck does a modern setting feel like a period piece?
>>
>>749513231
things become the past really quickly
>>
>>749508983
>early 2010's
fuck right off with that one
>>
>>749506525
Saint's Row 1 and 2 as well.

>>749509348
>The 2010s were fucking awful, literally worse than right now (edginess is making a comeback somewhat, the 2010s were pure millennial slop)
Nah. The early 2010s were fine if mediocre since a lot of the same energy from the late 2000s still manifested itself, even if you could tell it was watered down Cool shit was still easily accessible even if normalfagslop was all around you and it was good. This goes for music, games and even movies. even edgy shit like the Bitch Slap and Machete movies were still in vogue at the time. Even the popular shit wasn't horrible even though it wasn't good.

The late 2010s and the 2020s so far have been pretty rancid though. Everything is just bad and all the good shit is pretty hard to find as an adult. Like >>749509897 said, everything is just too sanitized, lame, gay, fake and boring. You know this shit was either made by a committee or by AI. Very few things are truly interesting and cool at that and it's hard to find them under the mounds of shit that social media creates on the Internet.

If it captures an identity well enough even when it's contenporary.
NYC in the first decade of the 21st century had a strong specific identity which is noticeably different form what it would be today.
>>
>>749514116
I'm talking really early
pre-mayan apocalypse, essentially just the 2000s hangover period, as far as its relevant to the vibe that GTA IV has, shortly before it dramatically shifted

for that matter I highly HIGHLY disagree with the people in charge of licencing for GTA IV's radio putting anything on Vladivostok post-2010 because you can just tell it sounds different somehow
2012 is the limit, everything after that kind of went to shit in a totally undeniable way, but 2011 was nice
it was like 2010 part 2

It's just a matter of time before the broccolis start referring this game as "retro".
>>
>>749506281
i used to think this but V absolutely does capture that early 2010s world. everything is nonserious and fun and california was basically the cultural center of the US for the whole first half of the decade. IV is much more grounded, miserable, politically opinionated and cynical which is fitting for the 2000s, especially for the recession era it takes place in. i think once VI comes out V will feel immediately much more dated.

it'd feel more like a Watch Dogs game today
imagine all the pokey little skyscrapers next to Central Park and other such modern abominations
plus all the added interactivity due to the quasi-online culture we have now

you can't not Watch Dogs that at this point
GTA IV got in at the right time to capture a bit of that old NYC from the movies we remember
>>
>>749514646
Don't they already? Time flies. Some broccolis are balding already, it's totally fucked.
>>
>>749514506
A location isn't a period and a period piece is specifically set in a time before it was made you moron
>>
>>749514572
they completely ruined the vibe for vladivostok as a whole in the update. there was lots of songs from the movies that inspired IV on the original, and other songs fitting that same tone, and they replaced it all with generic pop/rap which doesnt fit the games story or niko's character at all. the original had a couple of those songs but you overall got a good variety of genres from the region instead of just 1-2
>>
>>749514264
>The late 2010s and the 2020s so far have been pretty rancid though.
I say entertainment went to shit after 2016 for obvious reasons (TDS) and the fact a lot of niche franchises like Yakuza suddenly got popular with normalfags and had to sanitize as a result
>>
>>749516084
entertainment went to shit pretty abruptly in 2014.
>>
>>749508645
Games were great but that was the worst era for movies. Every film had fast cuts and shaky cam.
