"Learn Japanese" fags in shambles.
>>
AI is going to translate all this shit in 5 minutes.
>>
NOOOO STOP PLAYING THOSE GAMES BAKA GAIJIN THOSE AREN'T FOR YOU
>>
>AI
>>
>>749509123
indeed. more accurate than the alternative
>>
literally the only good use of LLMs
>>
Okay but are the TLs any good? Because the AI TLs I read on novelupdates are pretty consistently ass unless the guy making them spends time editing it.
>>
can someone translate the dreamcast mystery dungeon game k thx
>>
>>749509215
This. Machine assisted and 100% AI TLs are night and day.
>>
>>749509194
More accurate than knowing japanese?
All translations suck but i'll grant you machine translation is better than localization.
>>
>>749508814
No one told you to learn Japanese to play games with no translation available, the idea was for you to stop using translations at all (regardless of how they were made) because they will always be inferior.
>>
>bro just trust the AI translation of someone who doesn't speak Japanese themselves
No thanks, I use AI to try to translate shit daily while learning Japanese and it's crazy how much it gets wrong
>>
>>749508870

Does the AI get lines like this wrong?
>>
>>749508814
Learning Japanese is literally impossible if you didn't start as a child. 3 different alphabets. Instead of vowels building words building phrases, Japan has unique characters for each word or phrase. Meaning you have an infinizillion symbols to memorize. Also good luck having a conversation with a japanese person, actually getting to hear each word they spew at a rapid machinegun fire rate and respond with the correct word with the correct gender/formality/whatever other else context.
>>
Google translate is objectively much much worse now that it's AI-driven. Having all these these botched translations out there is only going to increase the value of language-learning.
>>
>>749510323
None of that makes Japanese difficult, you can brute force memorize all of that in a year or so
>>
>>749510323
I did it in my late 20s
It's not impossible, it's just a waste of time
>>
>>749509867
then just use a better AI model lol
the best ones already BTFO human translators

so much cope ITT from retards who wasted their life learning a dead chingchong language kek
>>

Nah I'm good
>>
>>749510323
The first half is just extremely basic rote memorization the second half is true but irrelevant to media where everything is very clearly enunciated
>>
>>749510452
You don't know Japanese if you think this is the case
>>
>>749509393
AI is worse than actually learning Japanese. However AI is much better than "learning Japanese" with internet flashcards like stupid ass weebs frequently brag about.
>>
why would i play a translation if i can play the original
>>
>>749510720
I don't want to see gookscribbles on my screen while gaming
>>
>>749508814
A translation will always be a translation. If you cannot parse text directly into thoughtform you are just reading someone else sloppy seconds interpretation of the text.
>>
>>749510771
then you should avoid playing japanese games

But they aren't Japanese if they're in English. It's like calling ramen or yakisoba Japanese when I make them at home; it's not because it's mine now.
>>
>>749510921
if you think its slop why are you invested in whether people play a translation or the original
>>
>>749511116
First post in the thread after kinda skimming the rest. Just postin because AI is good enough for translations now and saying otherwise is just cope.
>>
>>749511070
some japanese games include kanji characters as symbols on in game objects, icons or ui elements even if the rest is translated to english so you should watch out so you dont get a panic attack
>>
>>749510430
it's not a waste of time if you play a lot of japanese media
there are somethings EOPs will just never understand
>>
>>749511209

>>
>>749510452
you wouldn't know the difference between a good and bad translation
you just take the word of whoever gets to you first

>>
>>749511070
then why are you even playing japaense games?
>>
>>749511289
The funny scribbles left untranslated are just there as flavor. They have no bearing on the content because if they did they'd be in English too. Now get back to making me my miso paste and Kikkoman stuff, Takeshi.
>>
>>749510323
Sounds like a skill issue, considering how many people become reasonably fluent as adults.
Admittedly, complete fluency is a bit of a tall order, but if you're being honest, your english fluency is far from complete as well, as is the case for 98-99% of completely native speakers who've only known english since birth. You know goddamn well there's a lot of words that you don't know and couldn't guess at the meaning of, even right this moment.
>>
>>749511565
i thought you were scared of seeing japanese characters in your games like you said before so i alerted you to this fact for your own safety. dont play samurai warriors 4 btw, they flash a really big kanji on screen every time you use a musou attack
>>
>>749511472
Because they're fun. I don't need to respect a culture and certainly not a language to consume their products. Do you think that because we import cumin and black pepper we should respect Indians by opening up shitting streets?
>>
>>749511759
then why did you even need a translation?
>>
>>749511681
I know what the word rape means, and that's all I will ever need.

private trackers ban AI subs. All AI translations on exhentai have terrible ratings. People don't want AI subs, or at least the older anime fans. I imagine the younger generations getting into these communities don't give a fuck and that will be the future for all this kind of media anyway.
>>
Wait does that mean i can finally translate all the manga that got dropped by trannyslators?
>>
>>749511436
of all the things to be against AI for Translation is not one of those things art and communication is different because art transcends language barriers but not words, there are a few auto translators in the world now that actively translate live what people are saying to eachother I think in this case where the authors intent isnt marred or hidden behind people with bad intentions or frivolous morals.

The Language barrier is something as a whole Humanity actually benefits from destroying completely. I speak as an artist and even as a potential writer myself it only means good things as the machine begins to pick up on inflections and meaning, nothing bad other then a few fucking self righteous faggots in the industry losing their jobs and usefulness.
>>
>>749509123
The reality is you either get machine/AI translations or no one will touch these things with a five foot pole because the curious are never the skilled. Only those autistic enough to try. And hey I'm not asking you to compromise either, that's just the mess we're in.

Learning korean, am i retarded for doing so? i dont like japan
>>
>>749510706
Flashcards are gay, the best way to learn is the exact same way you did with your first language.
Just through context and hearing it alot.
>>
>>749514474
Why are you learning korean?
>>
>>749514474
Depends, do you like k-dramas and k-pop?
The only real reason to learn a language today is to engage with media in its original language, any actual important reason for knowing a language died along time ago with dedicated translators and now with real time automatic translation software. You can literally subtitle an irl conversation with smart glasses. So it honestly depends on why you want to learn it.
>>
>>749514538
It takes Japanese kids 7-8 years of learning the spoken language and all the words and understanding from birth and then 10 years of learning the kanji in school, from being exclusively exposed to the language all day every day for 17+ years

Flashcards let you condense that into a year or two as a gaikokujin
>>
>Want to learn cantonese
>All the resources online are for mandarin
>>
>>749511681
The difference is that gaijin don't have a Japanese brain. Any idiot of any race can learn talk velyvely good engrish, but Japanese is such a complex language that if your brain doesn't have special adaptations that are only racially found in the Japanese, then you'll just never be able to speak it properly.
Japan during the showa and early heisei genuinely believed this.

Japanese kids do not take 7-8 years to be able to speak.
2 year olds are able to understand and communicate.
Reading Kanji is a different story, but understanding a language is alot easier than you imply.

>>
>>749515251
The point is by the time they're 7 and ready for school they already know tens of thousands of words, how they're pronounced and what they mean, and only then do they start assigning kanji to the words in school
>>
>>749515252
Engaging with media is a good reason.
Its buisness reasons that are literally unimportant in todays world.
>>

It does, stop coping
>>
>>749515391
Any replicable examples?
>>
>>749515352
Yes and you can do the exact same.
If you want to speed up the reading process then you can watch stuff thats subtitled in japanese.
Speaking a language is considerably easier than reading and writing it, thats true of all languages.
>>
>>749515458
>>Yes and you can do the exact same.
Why would you waste 17 years on doing the exact same when you can cram it into a year or two with flashcards

Not to mention that learning kango makes far more sense when you have tons of kanji examples in front of you as opposed to first learning them as pronounced words where you won't necessarily pick up on the patterns

Why would I be in shambles? AI translation just makes my decision to learn JP a decade ago even better in retrospect.
Back then people would be like "nooo you have to learn Chinese, Japanese is a waste of time, there's no business value" and it's like bitch, I just want to enjoy Japanese media in its original language, fuck money. And now anyone who learned a language 'for the money' is shit out of luck, and I still get to play JP games in their original language.
If you don't understand why playing it in its original language is a good thing, you're probably monolingual. Even an ideal translation is still just a translation and not the same experience.

You can learn kana in a weekend as long as you arent retarded. Learning Kanji is becoming irrelevant by the day with translation apps. Learning basic Japanese to talk to someone is not hard. Once you learn noun placement and verb changes, you're basically all set. After that the hardest part is getting a Japanese person to talk to you.
>>
>>749515760
Playing vidya in japanese is incredibly easy, you dont even need to understand the language to be able to beat most vidya. If you then learn hiragana and katakana which takes a whole 1 day, then you're at a much bigger learning advantage from simply interacting with menus and listening to subtitled ingame dialogue.
I was playing vidya before I could even read in my native language (English) and vidya is also how I learnt to read

Retard, most Japanese only speak N3 levels of their own god damn language. Most all college students are on the low end of N2, with engineers, programmers, and language majors beibg on the higher end.

Oh, fun fact, Japanese Engineers learn fluent German because their language is so dogshit it can't describe all the terms they need to know to do actual engineering shit. Trying to do any collaborative work with Japanese engineers is a fucking nightmare because of this, and has lead to the proliferation of entire fucking firms who's sole job is to act as intermediary translators for manufacturing firms dealing business with Japan.

Meanwhile going for N1 is basically unheard of unless you're a writing or history major.

Throw in Japanese slang and how their refusal to adopt a space between words, leading to them instead schitzophreically alternating between hiragana and katakana when writing kanji words, in order to put in mental "spaces" between words, and Ive never actually wanted to shoot myself before as strongly as I did when I realized a year and a half of College Japanese was a complete waste of time.

I hate the Gooks, I hate their women, I hate their dog spit language, their food is pure IG slop, but fucking hell learning conversational Korean in less than a month was a breath of fresh god damn air.

The Japanese could easily overhaul their language seeing as the Gooks could do it in less than 5 years. Though they might not have do seeing as Japanese students now speak english just as well as they speak Japanese (poorly), but wait and see I guess.

This doesn't really indicate the quality of the AI so much as clarifies the translator's own lack of skill. If you're translating things and an AI returns many errors that you yourself couldn't diagnose, then you have no business translating anything. If a sadpanda level comic (simple manga dialogue, tons of stock porn lines) is translated badly it's because someone's trying to do it on a free model that they provide by default on Google (or it was uploaded 2+ years ago). It's almost impossible to translate something that simple wrong and you can easily feed the images for additional context on the scenes. It'll even do the typesetting and sound effects for you.

It teaches you how to write them with correct stroke order, what kanji is made of other kanji, what specific kanji looks like when converted into a radical for other kanji and gives you easy ways to remember them with mnemonics.
Theres also a website that lets you search up any kanji so long as you know one of the kanji its made up of https://hochanh.github.io/rtk/

Because the Fate H/A fan translation patch was at a standstill during that time for whatever reason (I think around 2011 or so, I was late to the party) and in the mean time this absolute chad just came around and dropped a full MTL patch for everyone to use. Causing massive butthurt for autists that wanted to be first.
>>
>>749516993
RTK is so uselss. A bunch of mnemonics that tell you nothing about the kanji other than how to write it.

It's only worth it if you're a weeb and plan on taking the pilgrimage to weeb Mecca at least once in your life. If you're like me, who lives in the midwest, and has only interacted with a handful of English-speaking Asians in their entire life, then fuck that.

Re-reading it, it also seemed to use the butthurt fag's patch as a basis.
So imagine your work getting stolen while you hoard it all like a faggotdragon then some chad comes and steals your treasure and finishes it for the world to experience.

Watching with English subs teaches you almost nothing.
>>
>>749517398
That depends on whether its "official" or fan subs.
Fan subs > official almost every time
>>
>>749517119
Learning what a symbol means in your native language first is a huge advantage. Even if you forget for an easy example the readings for 専 if you know it means Dr. then you can still understand what its saying. This helps with kanji that have multiple kun'yomi and on'yomi readings that you dont know.
>>

What concerns me is that, before, if a translation was shitty or whatever, the community would rake it over the coals and eventually fix it, even when the troons would pitch super big fits and try to stop you.

But now with AI translations, AI fags are way more sensitive, constantly try to fuck up conversations about fixing MTL/LLM translations, and spread misinfo all over the place. Then the real damaging thing is like, troonslators were always too sensitive to leave their forums, but AI fags come here, and so they stand to fuck with the actually good translators we have around here and bitch out any budding ones

Like I think back to about 6 years ago, in the Kamen Rider scene where O-T was basically the big face of translations, and they were total shitlibs that also loved doing "localizations." Eventually they were fucking up enough and taking so slow that people were complaining all the time about it, and they did the whole
>we actually have lives outside of translating :^)
>if you hate it, do it yourself :^)
and then someone on /m/ actually rose to the task and made the undisputed best subs for Zero-One and was the most consistent one to rely on for years, while also being super fast on uploading the next day after broadcast.

And now we might not get shit like that anymore because AI fags are way more belligerent and pushing their shit and demanding there be no questions, while actively trying to convince anons not to learn Japanese and actually do decent translations
>>
>>749517398
Watch raw or with japanese subs.
English subs dont work because you're not really listening properly, you're just reading the english text.

The reason why fansubs could be considered better than official subs are entirely unrelated to the quality of the translation. It's stuff like karaoke, typesetting, understanding of the material. The translations themselves? Usually dogshit.

It's not that Crunchyroll has particularly talented translators (they don't) but fan translators have always genuinely been apes who barely speak English, let alone Japanese. But the fan translators are often literal thirdie apes. You just don't typically notice this because anime dialogue is genuinely mostly N3 level and hard to mistranslate.

Listen, there's no salvaging how stupid your post was. I live in Japan right now and have for over a decade, so your 'I've been to Japan and worked with the Japanese' credentials do not impress me. You claimed that Japanese -college students- were on the -low end of N2-. You are retarded, period. Any native speaker can pass N1 easily at the beginning of high school. You are wrong, period, either lying or you spent your time in Japan in a sad little English speaking bubble.
>>
>>749518563
the only reason english could ever be considered easier is that it is easier to immerse yourself in english content exclusively compared to japanese
as far as the language itself and grammar japanese is far easier

Media is all well and good, but there's simply too much vocabulary to learn to simply let it pass you by. You still have to make an intentional effort to memorize what you see, which will be thousands of words.
>>

>>
>>749518692
How can you not understand that you learn shit step by step? You hear the same type of sentence with a word or two swapped and you start understanding how that sentence works without ever being taught any grammar rules. It's not like you were taught grammar rules for your native language before you were already fluent in it

>>
>>749518696
Care to elaborate? N1 is not difficult for native speakers, and passing only requires 100/180. You can only get 60% right and still pass. Which section do you imagine a native speaking 10th grader to fail with that huge a buffer?

He's retarded only because a half-illiterate middle schooler could pass an N1 test if they were native. It's a B2 level multiple choice exam where you need 100/180 to pass.

CERF B2:
>A B2 level of English would allow you to function in the workplace in English, and indeed, many non-native English speakers in international workplaces have this level of English. A person working in English at a B2 level will, however, lack nuance particularly outside his own field. He may also miss some of the subtleties and implied meanings in conversation.
>You can express most general thoughts, but you often lack exact words, nuanced phrasing, or proper idioms for abstract, technical, or high-register topics.

The N tests only measure formal "foundational" Japanese, and not the slang everybody speaks with now. And simple fact is, 90% of all reading in Japan is at the N3 level. Unless you're either in college, or are reading texts that are 30+ years old, you don't need proficiency past N2.

>>749518590
Japanese Jr High students are expected to know a rough average of 2,000 words, including kanji, shit for brains. Most college prep schools don't teach past N2

>>749518847
Theres "passing" and then there's passing. If you come to Japan as a foreigner and apply to a school, you HAVE to score at least an N2. However, universities will look at where you scored within the N2 bracket, and id you're not hitting above 88%, most schools won't take you. Nicer schools like Tokyo will not take anybody below 98% under any circumstance, and generally require a minimum of 80% N1 to be competitive.

The Japs have their own tests for native speakers, but its all the same bullshit. Stupid tests to gauge how many words you've remembered which is only a thing if you're being tested on dogshit pictogram script based lanuages like Japanese and Chinese.
