The non backwards compatible PS3s could run PS2 games using PS2 discs using the internal PS2 emulator, that's actually how they rereleased their PS2 classics lineup, they're literally PS2 games being emulated. Instead of letting people have PS2 backwards compatibility using the emulator they removed the feature so that they could sell PS2 games digitally and through their classics rereleases.
