I certainly WANT to like Thief, but in the dozen or so attempts I've made to play it over the years I've just never got it to click for me.
Maybe I've been spoiled by newer stealth games like Splinter Cell, but I've always just found the gameplay in Thief to be so incredibly basic that it's boring.

Not an entirely unjustified stance. I don't think Thief is boring but I will agree it is very basic. The people that really really like it like it for meta reasons mostly.

The amazing voice acting and cinematic direction in cutscenes is also a big seller for some.

Its a stealth game. Its supposed to be slow paced and "boring" but you wouldn't know that being a zoomer. Stealth is one of the best most kino genres there is in gaming. I wish it got the respect it deserved.

It's an acquired taste honestly. The hype is that it's one of the only games of its kind that drops you into a big map with some vague objectives and barely any idea of what to expect and asks you to figure it out and master the level. Then there's the supernatural elements that come out of nowhere when you expected a game about a thief robbing mansions and it becomes a bizarre survival horror game with weird monsters and ghosts. The atmosphere is unmatched in my opinion. Even in the "normal" human levels there's an oppressive and dark vibe, it's not a friendly world.

It was really impressive for its time but runs like shit on modern systems and feels a bit janky.
It also never got the modding/custom level love that Thief 2 got.
Its main issue is the same as the other Thief games, like half of it isnt actually stealthing/stealing shit and is just generic dungeon hack-n-slash against skeletons and zombies. but at least it didnt do a Thief 2 and start throwing robots at you for no reason other than to be an annoying cunt.
