I'm a controller sage. I bought the steam controller day one and sold it the day after. I had doubts about it and my hunches were right.
The puck is fucking retarded because you have to hold the cable then pull the controller which is way less practical than grabbing your controller out of its charging dock.
Besides the controller itself has a fuckton of issues. It's trying to pack way to much inputs for it's form factor, they should have made it wider.
The membrane buttons are mediocre. The back buttons have way too much resistance. There are no anti friction rings. Dpad and ABXY buttons are way too close to the sticks. It's not the worst controller of all time but at this price range it gets wrecked by many controllers.

Skill issue. Just grab it from the top and push the puck down with your finger.

you sound like a retard who doesn't know what a sticky-backed strap is.
my cable is stuck to my desk so I just lift up my controller and place it back down and it just works.
>>
>>749531096
Ok mister sage, give me a decent controller for 100 bucks or less im thinking of getting game sir 7 pro 8k
>>
>>749533418
The G7 pro is good (I have two) but at this price I'd rather get a Vader 5 with the charger dock. Recommending gadgethyper for that. The dpad is miles better on the Vader and it has tension rings.

Do you actually use both touchpads or only one? I'm curious if people use both of them it seems pretty overkill.
>>

TMR joysticks
>>
Puck isn't the problem, trackpad placement is. When I wanna use the steam controller I mostly use the OG one since the trackpads are what it does better than others. The should have placed the trackpads and sticks asymetric switch them on the right side. Then it would be perfect, so it's crippling its own best gimmick.

>>
>>749535907
yes both of them.
the customizability of the touchpads make it superior for old games (especially with the ones that don't have or have dogshit controller support).
i even like it for aiming sometimes because of that drag and slide thing that other touchpads don't do.
>>
>>749535907
The dpad emulation is better than the actual dpad...
>>
>>749536441
>>749536567

>>
>>749536683
Yes. Og steampad is alrdy the final form. The new one is a step back. Well it does have better haptics and 2 additional back buttons but I rather use the old one and have an additional standard controller.

Is this controller actually worth it? The left stick on my xbox controller started to drift two months ago. Though I've had it for like 3-4 years, don't remember. Looking to replace it with something else.
>>
>>749541009
>need to use both hands to separate it from the device
You don't. It takes a single finger.
>>749541450
Yes, but if all you need is a replacement for an Xbox controller that won't drift, you may as well get a Flydigi or any other chinesium controller with TMR sticks.
>>
>>749535907
The touchpads are absolutely godlike, but even I am not autistic enough to use both. Best use for it is to use it as a wheel, but that shit takes way too long to setup properly for each game. I did it with nubby's number factory, where each direction of the left touchpad clicked a specific coordinate on the screen, so I could play it entirely without using the mouse, but that was way too much work.
>>
>>749541541
>where each direction of the left touchpad clicked a specific coordinate on the screen
You can just do screen region.
>>
>>749531096
I bought it day one and it's the best controller I've ever owned. You sound like a handlet.
>>
>>749541586
That's exactly what I did, but it still takes way too fucking long. Doesn't help that the steam input UI is absolutely dogshit. Am I retarded or you really can't navigate that shit with the steam controller's trackpad mouse? I literally have to juggle between KB+M and the steam controller all the time when setting shit up

Finally got mine and the left dpad was broken.
The thing would only input as down dpad.

Was a bit of a pain but I bound the left trackpad as a dpad till support asked me to send it back.

>The membrane buttons are mediocre. The back buttons have way too much resistance. There are no anti friction rings. Dpad and ABXY buttons are way too close to the sticks.
All of these are nitpicks at best. They simply don't matter compared to what the controller can actually do.
>It's not the worst controller of all time but at this price range it gets wrecked by many controllers.
Not a single controller at this price range, or even any price range has trackpads. The SC wins just for that.

Have they become more readily available or is it still a nightmare? not available in my country and I'll have to wait until people can start importing and reselling them.
>>
>>749531096
I really like it. I just pick it up one handed and flick the puck off with a finger, it snaps towards the controller really easily no matter how I put it back. It's great. It's really comfortable and has a good D-Pad. My only complaint and it's a pretty big one is that the left stick location is pretty uncomfortable for me. I don't have very long thumbs but I use the D-Pad for what I'm playing anyway.

also the worst controller with no xinput, you HAVE to use steam, no playnite no launchbox for pirated games old games emulated games and gog games and most of the time you have to fiddle about with remaking controller inputs in the fucking menu because that fat fucking faggot gabe made no xinput switch wow great controller you retarded cunt

they could have been one of the people instead they do the most gayest shit that sony does locks down everything to their own ecosystem
>>
>>749542220
This proves I have tested and have many reference points in controllers just like you have many reference points in licking Gaben ass, dick and balls so everyone knows you're able to tell apart their taste.
>>749542624
The trackpads aren't even well placed. It's a flawed controller with bad execution. Just like the puck is.

>[_] Double sided tape your puck

Now let's see what option anon chose.
>>
>>749536683
Yes. This is the best version of the Steam controller or at least closer to it than the 1.0 or 2.0 were.
The stick on the 1.0 just forces you to hold it weird if you want to use it, the fake d-pad patterning was pointless and the Diamond face button layout was also trash. I guess it made some kind of sense during that period where PC ports were genuinely shit with their controls, but it still set the controller back by a lot.
It also feels like the official rebinding software has only gotten worse over time.

A new Steam controller with this layout and the 2.0 Steam controller's back and grip buttons would be fantastic.
>>
>>749546012
Just 3D print your own dock so that you have exactly the right dock for your purpose instead of needing to buy some garbage plastic trash.
>>
>>749546190
>Just print your ugly plastic trash to contain your piece of hardware
>>
>>749546292
skip the ugly trash to begin with? That's what's nice about the puck. I don't need some tacky controller holster sitting on my desk. But the puck is the receiver and can be tucked away but still serve the function of the dock when needed
>>
>>749531096
>The puck is fucking retarded because you have to hold the cable then pull the controller
I charge it like once every 2 weeks, how is this an issue?
>>
>>749530647

Just a thought, but couldn't have they designed the pins to be recessed until the magnet pulls them up to the controller?
>>
>>749542101
which ones did you like? i've only used ultimate 1 and g7 pro currently have the latter
>>
>>749535907
Waya I use trackpads on deck:
>Factorio: both are 2d mouse. Game is so mouse heavy that it's nice to use 2 thumbs to fast move mouse around
>Deadlock: left trackpad is 2d mouse with click for menus, right trackpad is 3D aim and click to melee. Nice so I can aim and melee at same time.
>Submachine legacy: left trackpad is basically a touchscreen where the square is always mapped exactly onto the square game window. Right trackpad is normal 2d mouse. Nice because in this game you very often just want to click on "the bottom half of the screen"
