Just as jarring as JD. I was very luke-warm on Gears 4. It felt like a Marvel movie. None of the new characters felt "Gears" enough for me. All of them also matched that typical Marvel stereotype where everyone is quipping off one another and taking the edge off the tension/stakes because we don't want things too dark now for a general audience. Gameplay is more or less gears gameplay. They have added weapon and armor mods and kind of halo reach armor abilities. So a tiny bit of “build crafting”. It also feels like damage sticks around longer. We’re playing on normal and it’s pretty quick to get downed if you get caught in the open. But on the other hand the other team mates are pretty fast in picking you up
Overall fans are probably going to see it as a decent to good game. Maybe ~8/10

I want to preface this by saying I did enjoy e day quite a lot. Campaign was solid, and horde feels good. It's the best of the new Gears games by a lot, not that that means much.

In an ideal timeline gears 4 would have been a 4 player experience with Marcus as the 4th character. JD would be an overly positive character trying to live up to his father’s image by doing his best to save kait’s family from the new locust, but he’s a little reckless and ultimately fails. Marcus would be struggling with trying to get JD not to feel the need to live up to him and not to be so reckless, because he’s all he has left. Gears of War was always an early effort to boil the frog on taking gaming away from male nerds and it shouldn't surprise anybody that the devs are insufferable retards and it's one of the worst in completely caving to wokeness.

I can kinda sympathize with Halo and Gears fans, but I also don't really care if the franchises ever recover. I care even less about Gears because I can at least recognize Halo as an innovative franchise (the first game was the first FPS to get vehicles right) with memorable levels and pretty environments for the time. Even if those levels were a big step towards the modern problem of western games trying to be cinematic experiences instead of games. Gears just feels like a generic grey sci-fi movie.

From Lucas is not really a random thing, he talks about how the same satelite that he's currently using as last resort is the same one he used to talk to his friends and got them killed during the Pendulum Wars, on top of already feeling like shit because he feels guilty about the death of the chopper gunner. I feel like the only reason they did that was to both create cheap melodrama between JD and Marcus and for an excuse for Kait to get her armor. The latter of which could easily be justified by saying that that Anya was busy doing government stuff in New Ephyra, but then you lose out on that sweet sweet melodrama.

Because they are a squad that by that point understands that they all need to be at their 100% but know that they can't just be insesitive assholes to each other in order to get psyched for the next fight and would rather calm each other down when it comes to their personal hang ups. Same reason they let Dom brood in peace over the dead of his kids, is way too soon for him and they respect that until it explodes in the climax with Marcus. Having a sad backstory is not something I see as bad, it's just the nature of the setting, it's a world that's been at war for nearly a century, it's a given that anyone in proximity with the military would have have something affecting them.
