The only sokoban I ever played is Baba Is YouI liked the puzzles where you have to think bigly about how to arrange the wordsI hated the puzzles where you have very limited movement and need to make exactly the right moves to not get stuckWhich type is this game?
>>749601147>Which type is this game?it has a little bit of everything, including what you like and hate.
Someone explain to me how teleport plus skip beam is supposed to work. I've done these levels twice and still don't understand the rules.
>>749601764Chessboard rules; white captures white, black captures black.Like a bishop except not diagonals.I think the logic is that a normal teleport considers every object in your path, but when you move double your 'path' skips every second tile.

>>749599478This makes more sense now, I did a fucked up unintended version of this where you root the second lilypad inside the gap instead of near the start, and it's only possible to unroot + move back + switch + push + move across if you time it perfectly at the beginning of a frame using the animation state
>>749600673I was stuck at that puzzle with the golden square in the middle that everyone gets stuck on only to move past it and then immediately get stuck on the next puzzle

>>749605136Its a meme about how indians say "Sir" a lot and pronounce it saar. People say sinking saar either to be funny because the words are similar, or in this case because they think hired indian shills are making threads, which is unlikely.
I missed the discount period. But is He Who Watches any good? I might get it the moment it goes on sale again.
>>749608789I liked it a lot (but less than OotSS). It has the classic puzzle game thing where you learn a mechanic that's hiding in plain sight, and other hidden puzzles and stuff. The individual puzzle levels are really good and with a cool hint system that I didn't feel bad about using. And great presentation. 8.5/10.Apparently it's an aggy dagger which is neat.
>>749609103Cool. I'll definitely play it then when the time comes.

>>749599478yeah i'm on that one now and still haven't found the solution yet no hints please. to be honest i found skipping stone puzzles additionally difficult due to the lack of confidence that they may be completed with or without timing. if there's timing involved, i may fidget around too long with a possibility or even worse, solve it with an unintended solution that requires brutal timing and reinforce the idea that the next puzzles may need it too

The puzzles a fun and all but without a cool aesthetic or an intriguing story it doesn't pull you in long term the way The Witness did. Just ends up being a game that sits on your desktop and you play it like 30 minutes a day. Like solitaire or something

>>749620184This reminds me I should actually go check if I can get the ending already, I've been puzzling left and right
>>749619658so there's not enough story because there's too much story and it gets in the way of good storytelling which is having no story at allYou dont even know what youre saying man, but I get it you just find OotSS annoying. It's personal preference, for me I like the dialog and wish there was more of it, because it just stops playing new lines after a certain point and they hardly come back. But you get no answers as to whats going on until the end so even if you hear the dialog you still don't know what is happening. Idk how you feel about the audio logs that you "find" I think the game would be better off without them and just learning everything from the character's perspective.>>749620184How many puzzles solved?
For what I've seen so far, some massive puzzles (the first of beamcasters took me more than 2 hours and that's without getting stuck a lot) count as one. Does this kind of big puzzles appear later in the game as well? If so, I can see myself easily playing this for months

>>749632954They wouldn't make any money releasing the game on retro consoles.
>>749635101I like them. The timing really isn't a problem because you can slow down time, and different levels have different speeds for skipping stones, lily pads, and carts. If something seems hard to pull off, then you are probably doing something wrong and it won't work anyway.

>>749636391Oh yeah, there's like a massive monologue here about how some woman appeared outside his window and coerced him into this plot. That was like 20 hours ago so I completely forgot; I wonder whether that thread will be picked up after the first ending.
>>749636529no, you can always turn the beams around from somewhere else.

I spent like 20 hours not hearing a word from any of the heroes and just doing stone and mirror shit and then walked back into the heroes area and saw a level I missed and bam a sudden 30 minute monologue by literally who about literally what then Im doing this final boss looking puzzle then I finish it and nothing happens.
>>749636529I think that one is designed to not be softlockable. I've only seen one multi screen gems puzzle that could be fucked up, and it had only like 5 gems.
It's so over
>>749636950The dialogues really at the same time add a lot of personality and charm to the game and feels completely disjointed. Part of it is probably Blow couldn't guarantee you'd do most things a certain order, and budget, but still.
>>749636982this guy is apparently a puzzle game masochist and doesn't think this game is hard compared to the greats of the genre so that might inform this score
>>749637024I think the problem is more with coverage and consistency. When the dialogue is so frontloaded, it sets expectations and makes the silent 90% of the game feel really fucking weird.
>>749637024I've had the feeling since Braid that Blow thinks he's too cool and different to have a coherent story in his games. OotSS comes by far the closest to having one, and it's a bit disappointing to me it's not as prominent as it seems at the start. On the other hand, his games are gameplay first, which is respectable

I'd give it a 7/10, but on 5 point scale it's more of a 3 than a 4.There are some good puzzles, and good twists on the sokoban formula, but it's just more sokoban. Nothing really novel there. There are a lot of puzzles, which is good for content and value/$, but it can also bloat the experience.Graphics and presentation is better than budget indie games, but it doesn't match the atmosphere of something like Obra Dinn, and the story is pretty whatever. All in all, a fairly average but enjoyable experience so far. Maybe the end game stuff blows me away, but based on my experience with the Witness, I think it'll just be more of the same.

But the game explores so many interesting epiphenomenological properties of its rules that like, who cares
>>749637924No, when its listing the characters in the credits it just says "The priestess has chosen a vow of silence".

>>749637954There's nothing wrong with sokoban games, but it doesn't do anything for me that would elevate the score, like Baba did.

>>749638560>but just the concept cannot hide weak puzzle designs by the endNot him but I feel the same way, Baba's legacy has ultimately been slightly weakened in my mind because of the Scribblenauts-like nature of its solutions. It's still one of the best sokoban concepts and contributions to the genre, just not the purest in its designI nevertheless hold Hempuli in very high esteem for his design skills overall
>>749638560Maybe I change my mind as I go through the later puzzles. But I don't really care for the mirror isles and am ambivalent on the skipping stones, which puts a damper on things. Maybe I should do the MxS puzzles now instead of leaving them for the end,

It's weird I put a good 10 hours in so far and only found 1 of the crossover puzzles (mirror + wizard). I assume they're going to pick up soon though since I'm at a dead end in 3 of 4 games
>>749651025you're about to do only crossover puzzles for 20 hours coming real soon
>>749650796stones requires you to work backwards. You usually know the goal, so you have trace the possible paths and then how those paths are possible, and then how you even set them up.If Jon wasn't so attached to pointless homages with original designs, stones easily could have been the best section with refinements and proper difficulty progression
>>749651128you think stones doesn't have proper difficulty progression? i thought the very first level of stones being much more esoteric than any of the other initial campaigns set the tone just right. i might have immense trouble with it most times but certainly i thought it was signposted well that it was going to be immense trouble.
why was "the promise" renamed to "vault of the beamcasters" within months of release?
phew. I just beat the game in its entirety and saw the *real* ending. I wont spoil anything but chewbacca dies and palpatine returns
>>749618218that one took me ages. finished it this afternoon. really satisfying once the insight clicks that you can maneuver the priest through the intersections, and then redo the whole fire path sequentially from the end
>>749651187>you think stones doesn't have proper difficulty progression?absolutely not, and it doesn't teach anything either.> i thought the very first level of stones being much more esoteric than any of the other initial campaigns set the tone just rightThis is a core issue with puzzle games, veterans see obscurity and ill-defined domains as a meta-puzzle to solve. And designers like Jon think "just experiment bro" is akin to "invisible tutorials". But games need to define their domains, especially ones as intensely arbitrary as puzzle games.
>>749592528Is it just me, or does Jon Blow have a very obvious fetish for brown women?

>>749651339You should be fair here, the rest of the game AND everything after Skipping Stones 1 does exhibit a "gentle hand" design philosophy that coaxes the player into discovering whatever tools they need. Skipping Stones 1 is the exception here, with the player tossed right into the deep end.
>>749651549>the rest of the game AND everything after Skipping Stones 1 does exhibit a "gentle hand"Of course, Heroes is great for this, and you can tell it got the most attention and care. I just wish the other sections weren't so disjoint in comparison.
things that impress me about this game so far as a genre veteran>has puzzles that take a long time to execute, but it's not annoying because you know the solution is going to work once you see it and there's enough wiggle room that you won't get cucked by an errant block placement 30 turns ago>is capable of introducing a new mechanic without the next 20 puzzles being an exhaustive shopping list of every possible interaction with every previous mechanic that also progressively throws in more tedious vanilla sokobon elements>level layouts provide a sense of atmosphere and sometimes tell a little story>big 12+ screen puzzles can't be softlocked unless you go full retard

>>749651549Honestly, in hindsight, stones 1 is a tutorial of sorts. Everything you do in it is is elaborated on tenfold, so much so that when you go back to play it you are a bit mindblown at the struggle you once had. Other anon said "just expierement bro" is not akin to progression, but with how much more tricky things they through at you in other stones levels, it kinda needs to throw people in the deep end to truly internalize how the stones work. I'm only 10-ish hours in and it's harder and more frustrating than SSR for me, idk what the people saying it's accessible for nomies are smoking
The promise levels are so god damn based. You start off completely lost just searching for any vulnerable gems, and by the end you feel like a master of the grid. I just did one in the post game and on a dopamine high.
Priestess getting cooked alive for the past 15 minutes while wizard ponders the situation.
>>749653241>post game
>>749653240What are you struggling with specifically? To be honest I think its more accessible because its not that tight of a sokoban and more about problem solving/expierementing. I haven't even played SSR but from what I seen, at least early on, its just a pure sokoban. To make an analogy, figuring out the specific steps on how to maneuver the peg so it fits the hole stresses me way more than in Order where its more about finding the right peg and hole and the execution is easy.
>>749653309I think this cleric gimmick has to be the best in the entire game. Some puzzles I was struggling with, but when you figure it out and you are pushing or pulling her to the win its very satisfying

as someone who doesnt own the game its kinda odd to read people going "I didnt understood a mechanic but now I do and it was mildly satisfying to solve a puzzle"

i think this contradiction needs to be addressed. are you playing the game by asking others to do it for you? isn't wracking your brain part of the fun of puzzles? or are you happy just completing the puzzle no matter the method?
>>749656070>wrackingthis is what happens when i try to use unfamiliar vocabulary
>>749656070some people don't adhere to the typical purity of solving things completely blind to have it be valid. They have self-defined rules where vague hints or guidance is fine, and some just think the effort alone is enough even if they got backpacked through it.(I am a purity believer though, hints tend to stifle your brain in coming up with new avenues of thinking.)
>>749656109It's not strictly wrong. Racking is straining (it comes from tying people to "the rack" and pulling them apart to torture/kill them) and wrack is a sailing term for getting damaged or tossed around. So if you're going insane trying to figure something out either spelling works.

>>749656710I guess skipping stones 1? otherwise idk, no
>>749656791>what is the point of people stating their number of puzzles completed and hours passedI can help you out with that: it is pointless.
>>749656791I haven't asked for any hints, but I've tried to help a few people who asked. I think it's okay and can make the game more fun for some people who would otherwise get stuck and give up on the game, but in principle I agree with you.
I stopped playing Baba when I got to the meta world puzzles that needed you to go inside a puzzle to solve puzzles in the outside world area and you could brick yourself easily, I think it was a couple dozen puzzles after Crushers, almost beat it.Should I play this game?
>>749657123Sure, it's not super hard to make it to the credits and you'll probably have fun for dozens of hours even if you get bored in the late game. You don't get blocked in the overworld much in this game because of optional puzzles and the way the levels are laid out
>hear people talking about how much of the game they did in X hours>always leave my game running in another workspace>now if anyone saw my time played they would think I'm retarded compared to my progress
shieet nigga ion get it
>>749637963>epiphenomenological properties of its rulesThis is your brain on Jon Blow.
scratch that i get it now crazy how that happens instantly after you humiliate yourself by posting
>>749658015think about what the end goal requires and what that means
>>749658313it's probably just the fact that you stopped looking at it for a minute rather than your humiliation
I'm having a great timeUnexpected sleeper hit, I don't pay attention to gaming mediaJblow still got it
>>749655751The solution to that gem was absolutely fucking insane. To think there was no trick at all, and all you had to do was stand in the most unassuming little corner of the level you'd never otherwise bother to go to really blew my mind. One of the greatest examples of hiding in plain sight I've ever seen. Also I don't know who designed that level but it was one of the best in the game so far. You feel utterly cornered and unable to do anything at so many points, and yet you can just eke out a maneuver by the skin of your teeth.
why don't the heroes know what fcking water iswhat did blowie mean by that..
Bro tier list (I've only done N and E, screwed around in S and W for a bit)>Blue Wizard>Red Warrior>Orange Merchant>Gray Druid>Purple Bard>Yellow Priest>Green Thief
>>749659068the heroes live in a world where sam altman already drained the lakes
106 solved and already burning out
>>749659102I really like all the small directional push/pull animations
>>749659326the bard is pink, the queen (overworld) is purple>>749659068also come to think of it, why can't the sailors swim...
>>749659532>also come to think of it, why can't the sailors swim...Historically, many couldn't. You didn't need to swim, you were on the boat
how do you deal with autism part of brain that gets stuck on an assumption and just keeps trying to brute force this idea and becomes blind to other possibilities
>>749659639Restart the level and say "What is this level asking me to do?"For example there was hero+mirror level that involved red and druid, with a bunch of cages, and I didn't see a fucking rock I could push, so you know what I did? I cloned the druid and turned him into crystal and made a bridge out of his clones. Didn't work but was still cool to figure out. Then I realized I only had to move the rock I couldn't see
>>749659639Give up and try another level and come back to it later, this game is very friendly to this approach
>>749659639i restart and try any option besides my default one, even if it's a (supposed) dead end. It's like revealing a self-inflicted fog of war
why would anyone ask for help with a puzzle? In my experience, you just feel bad about being an idiot and depriving yourself of the chance to figure it out. Its like fapping.
>>749660047Well doing it with your own hand feel worse than having someone jerk you off
I'm not asking for help but shit like this is so finnicky and I basically hate the bard
5 out of 6 skipping stones treasures
>>749661347I solved it but I can't even help you. I tend to solve these kinds of levels by dancing back and forth shaking her tits until eventually it works out.
>4 directions>there are 6 pairs of combinationsIt's a fucking cube isn't it
>>749639865The way you kill the dragon is kinda bs
>>749661347Its big amount of really small puzzles, you can figure them out just by fucking around
Was I supposed to use both mirrors in this one?
>>749619616>i dont get why theres one hard puzzle that makes you want to drop the game and then 10 super easy ones in a rowThe easy ones generally teach you fundamentals that allow the difficult ones to be difficult without being abhorrently stupid.
>>749662493nta, but even within a puzzle chain, sometimes there's like>tutorial>tutorial>what the fuck is this bullshit>not quite tutorial but still pretty easy
>>749629592wtf?that was easy as fuck
>1000 levels for 30 dollarydoosThis is a steal
Am I just retarded or Skipping Stones is way harder than the other areas?
>>749662923>Am I just retarded or Skipping Stones is way harder than the other areas? It's pretty difficult.
>>749662923It basically has no intro level to ease you into it
i like puzzleslop, might give this piece of shit a try and ask you what I will have thought about it
>>749662923Yeah, the way you move pieces is just not intuitive so it makes it harder, and the end goal of the stage is not always clear
Is this actually an easy puzzle? I did most of the mirror islands already but for some reason I feel retarded
>>749663179>>749663035>>749663097At least it seems that as you advance, the stages start to get easier and the objective more clear.
>>749663191bro im stuck on this shit right now toowtf is this puzzle
>>749663226>>749663179I have to redo the first level because I missed an orbPlus there was a lot of cloudy spot I missedIt feels like its not intuitive which spots you have to break out of
>>749663191This one is easyYou just have to place the mirror far away as possible from the rock horizontallyThe next level, on the other hand, had me stuck for hours.
>>749663191>Is this actually an easy puzzle?yes
>>749592528this looks like a mobile gamenortubel has better art direction
>>749663278>>749663271Oh okay I got it, I thought it was something like that, I thought I had to buffer the spacing somehow but I just couldn't piece it togetherIt's also almost 6 am
>>749663191For mirrors, it really helps to think in diagonals.
>>749636587Could it be the same seer who sent Mirror Man on his quest?
Fuck! I thought I had it.
>>749663527Wait, never mind inspiration hit.
cool level
I need a hint for this overworld puzzle, how do I put the monster on the button? I need to be able to push him once more left to be done, but I can't seem to get into position.
>>749664329You unlocked that space, you'll need it to move him to the right spot
>>749664329There are almost no red herrings in the game. Anything that seemed important is important.
>>749661347i did it twice in demo and retail and still do not remember the solutions, but you definitely need to line up the gem by moving it through water to your left
oh what the fuck and this is the first level? fuck me
>>749664670
>>749664670have fun anon!
>>749664384>>749664435alright I'm retarded and blanking on this one, give it to me straight
>>749664787fine
>>749664852thanks, I'm retarded yes (but not as much at literally any skipping stones level)
its like head over heels!
>>749664038There is some mathematical beauty here but I can't be assed to think about it
Any hints on this one?
i usually don't care about achievements but do i really need to play the entire 100 puzzles from the demo again to get cheevos? fix your shit jon!
>>749666175shouldnt be an issue anymore
>>7496627701400+
Sometimes my first idea is what works and the puzzle takes 10 seconds. Other times my second idea is what works and the puzzle takes me 20 minutes
>>749666008Not really a hint, but try thinking about what are your options to get someone to the final exit at the bottom, a bridge is impossible it seems
Does the difficulty level increase in the post/late game or it's always easy/medium?
>North is fun as fuck>West is fun as fuck>East is kinda brain melting especially in the diagonals>South is hell on earth ESPECIALLY on the diagonals with eastCHANGE MY MIND
>>749667219I'm only about 15-20 levels into the post game stuff and it the same difficulty because it introduces new stuff and ramps up similarly to when it introduces new stuff in base game.
I'm a little upset. if you sprint you fall in the water, if you walk you make it. this cost me like 30 minutes
>>749667769That seems like a bug
>>749667769thats a bug
>>749667769It truly is amazing that Blow refuses to use state machines for an elaborate puzzle game, and manually juggles bitmask flags and if else jungles
>>749667947brainlet programming take, they're logically equivalentwhat makes the game so complex is he decided to mix all the game together so the real-time stuff from stones and the promise has to work with the complicated transactional mechanics of regular sokoban games
>>749668072I have to assume anon meant atomic state switches which you're saying don't exist?
>>749667769oh thats how you solve that, i did the same thing ffs
>>749668116"state machines" are when you create classes to represent states with enter and exit functions
>>749668072>they're logically equivalentThey're quite literally not.State machines are automatic resolving while he manually manages everything.
>>749652485>>749634993solved after a night's sleep. was trying some galaxy-brained scheme w the first stone which led me down the wrong track, after resetting for the umpteenth time and trying something else it turned out to be simple
>>749668226its very easy to manually create a state machine with if-elses
>>749668215I'm not sure I agree with that definition. To me a state is a value from some finite set, and a transition means updating the value to a different one in the same set. Most likely that should be done atomically (one-shot) but as the mp4 shows there's an `if (sprinting)` in the middle of it, which seems questionable.
>>749668336I assume he meant the architecture and not the logic because he's talking about if-else and bitsetsThe logic can't be done purely atomically / transactionally because the game incorporates real-time mechanics
>>749668537>because the game incorporates real-time mechanicshe has an entire transaction system with entity actions. It could be atomic, unless he's doing shenanigans and manually patching for certain cases.
>>749657437Sure broThat's why you have 40 hours and 90 completedSure
>>749668757Yeah he does, I said it can't be ENTIRELY transactionalCharacters walking / falling happens over time and it's not instant like traditional Sokoban
>>749668805>Characters walking / falling happens over timeit's still just tiles with a Z level. he tracks and commits the active one and was showing off debug stuff when someone brought up the movement and animations.
>>749668989It's tiles that objects move between over time
>>749669002>It's tiles that objects move between over timeHe tracks entity distance on the active tile, and switches at like 51% of the tile width. It's more noticeable if you play with skipping stones in slow-mo and do water collisions.
>>749669116I know, that time factor is why the way events happen could change based on how fast you were moving (even if it was a bug)If it was a Sokoban game with no real-time mechanics like Baba is You then it's easy to write airtight state machines with no bugs
>>749668336Not any of these anons, but its not because he was sprinting he fell. It has to do with what the other anon said, the real time nature of the game. He basically outran the flame perpendicularly and his state was never updated. Probably would have happened regardless of how the states were managed because they must have done something out of order when determining states. I know it has nothing to do with sprinting directly because I have done something similar while walking in a level where a dragon glides on a lilipad parallelly with you and you have to walk in tandem over gaps. I was holding up (the direction of the gap) so I could walk across it the first frame I was allowed, and my cleric kept falling in the gap even though from a gameplay perspective they are not supposed to be able to walk over the gaps unless they are going to be a in a flamed state. I would have to assume its some kind of side effect to the in-between frames they give when lillipads and skipping rocks are moving between squares where you can still hit them. I dunno, I've never coded a game before
Do I only unlock the druid section if I do something specific in other island? I miss my heroes man....
