i somehow beat it with slow-mo. sometimes i wonder if it's even a puzzle game rather than a precision platformer

ahh, so I tried slow-mo and almost got it but it had to be pixel perfect so I figured that must be wrong and the right way is to somehow get the crystal on the first lilypad. thanks ill just try to cheese it again now that I know it works

This is the exception. I must have solved it in two minutes.

Someone explain to me how teleport plus skip beam is supposed to work. I've done these levels twice and still don't understand the rules.
>>
>>749601764
Chessboard rules; white captures white, black captures black.
Like a bishop except not diagonals.
I think the logic is that a normal teleport considers every object in your path, but when you move double your 'path' skips every second tile.

>>
>>749601826
Ok I can see that logic, and it explains why you can teleport through so many walls. It only seems to work if you try to skip going down the beam. Going perpendicular to works as expected.
>>
>>749602218
Never mind, it works going perpendicular to the beam as well. Fucking wizards,
>>
>>749599478
This makes more sense now, I did a fucked up unintended version of this where you root the second lilypad inside the gap instead of near the start, and it's only possible to unroot + move back + switch + push + move across if you time it perfectly at the beginning of a frame using the animation state
>>
>>749600673
I was stuck at that puzzle with the golden square in the middle that everyone gets stuck on only to move past it and then immediately get stuck on the next puzzle

>>

Its a meme about how indians say "Sir" a lot and pronounce it saar. People say sinking saar either to be funny because the words are similar, or in this case because they think hired indian shills are making threads, which is unlikely.

I liked it a lot (but less than OotSS). It has the classic puzzle game thing where you learn a mechanic that's hiding in plain sight, and other hidden puzzles and stuff. The individual puzzle levels are really good and with a cool hint system that I didn't feel bad about using. And great presentation. 8.5/10.
Apparently it's an aggy dagger which is neat.

>>749599478
yeah i'm on that one now and still haven't found the solution yet no hints please. to be honest i found skipping stone puzzles additionally difficult due to the lack of confidence that they may be completed with or without timing. if there's timing involved, i may fidget around too long with a possibility or even worse, solve it with an unintended solution that requires brutal timing and reinforce the idea that the next puzzles may need it too

The puzzles a fun and all but without a cool aesthetic or an intriguing story it doesn't pull you in long term the way The Witness did. Just ends up being a game that sits on your desktop and you play it like 30 minutes a day. Like solitaire or something

That's exactly why I wanted to explore every bit of the world, to find little clues about the story that's barely there. >>
>>749619658
so there's not enough story because there's too much story and it gets in the way of good storytelling which is having no story at all

You dont even know what youre saying man, but I get it you just find OotSS annoying. It's personal preference, for me I like the dialog and wish there was more of it, because it just stops playing new lines after a certain point and they hardly come back. But you get no answers as to whats going on until the end so even if you hear the dialog you still don't know what is happening. Idk how you feel about the audio logs that you "find" I think the game would be better off without them and just learning everything from the character's perspective.

>>749620184
How many puzzles solved?

For what I've seen so far, some massive puzzles (the first of beamcasters took me more than 2 hours and that's without getting stuck a lot) count as one. Does this kind of big puzzles appear later in the game as well? If so, I can see myself easily playing this for months

I like this game but this name is terrible.

It doesn't have any punch and basically means nothing. Baba is You? Opus Magnum? Into the Breach? Now those are good puzzle game names

Even if you wanted something more artsy and verbose you could have at least gone with something less vague and generic like "Return of the Obra dinn"

I'm about to get the second ending and you get a few multi-screen puzzles, but I haven't seen any new levels like the larger initial beamcasters or skipping stones levels so far. A dozen out of 400 puzzles solved have been maybe a third of the size of those levels at most.

You need to know people IRL, which is also the reason why legitimate non-retard discussion about the world can occur there. A chicken and egg problem unless you're one of the generationally wealthy who get in via family recommendations. Anyway if you're not already a well to-do person who does all sorts of gay shit with your nice neat two and half kids family like church (whatever denomination but it's still mostly white people so there's some obvious targets to farm) dinners , sports club crap and other community shit, then good luck meeting anyone middle class who would recommend you.
I did used to know a bricklayer who was a freemason but he was a handsome chap who ran a large business and visited wealthy people on site at their properties regularly so it was easy for him to make connections.

>>
The reveal trailer stated that Order of the Sinking Star has more than 1000 puzzles; director Jonathan Blow has stated that the game has more than 1400 puzzles. Blow stated that the game can take up to 250 hours to complete at a normal pace, and more than 500 hours to solve all puzzles. However, the player need not complete all puzzles to reach the end of the game's story

It didn't spawn, it was always there. The theme of these golden tile puzzles is that you can finish one campaign solve 1 half of it, then finish another campaign and solve the other half.

The timing component and positioning component is just kinda bullshit. Most puzzles are "get from point A to point B" and figure out intermediate steps in a sort of static world with a few components you can move one at a time.
Skipping stones is "well if you see the allowed stone throwing positions and lilypad is moving horizontally you can time a looparound rock that will hit another floating lilipad at the right time to make a platform to put a mirror on so the rock going away can be reflected back at the perfect angle to hit Jonathan Blow right in the face"

There are some good ones but they are the ones that stump me the most.

>>749632954

>>
>>749635101
I like them. The timing really isn't a problem because you can slow down time, and different levels have different speeds for skipping stones, lily pads, and carts. If something seems hard to pull off, then you are probably doing something wrong and it won't work anyway.

this guy is apparently a puzzle game masochist and doesn't think this game is hard compared to the greats of the genre so that might inform this score

I think the problem is more with coverage and consistency. When the dialogue is so frontloaded, it sets expectations and makes the silent 90% of the game feel really fucking weird.
>>
>>749637024
I've had the feeling since Braid that Blow thinks he's too cool and different to have a coherent story in his games. OotSS comes by far the closest to having one, and it's a bit disappointing to me it's not as prominent as it seems at the start.
On the other hand, his games are gameplay first, which is respectable

Where I am with 240 solved at 24 hours, I sort of agree with his score. I'd give it a 7/10, but on 5 point scale it's more of a 3 than a 4.
There are some good puzzles, and good twists on the sokoban formula, but it's just more sokoban. Nothing really novel there.
There are a lot of puzzles, which is good for content and value/$, but it can also bloat the experience.
Graphics and presentation is better than budget indie games, but it doesn't match the atmosphere of something like Obra Dinn, and the story is pretty whatever.
All in all, a fairly average but enjoyable experience so far. Maybe the end game stuff blows me away, but based on my experience with the Witness, I think it'll just be more of the same.

Crawford is a fairly serious commentator and appraiser of these kinds of games, not to be dismissed lightly, but does suffer from a degree of audience capture, I believe

However, I haven't found that review and I can't imagine what his justification for a mediocre score would be, other than that none of the mechanics are truly meta (Baba is You) or offer atypical transformations of game objects (Stephen's Sausage Roll, Squishcraft). But the game explores so many interesting epiphenomenological properties of its rules that like, who cares
>>
>>749637924
No, when its listing the characters in the credits it just says "The priestess has chosen a vow of silence".

I've occasionally praised details of the game in older screenshots and stuff he's posted and his responses have ranged from a bit dismissive to nothing at all, so I would imagine not. At the end of the day I'm not here to suck up to him though, the game speaks entirely for itself
>>
>>749637954
There's nothing wrong with sokoban games, but it doesn't do anything for me that would elevate the score, like Baba did.
>>
>>749638371
I feel the opposite. Baba is impressive at first, but just the concept cannot hide weak puzzle designs by the end. OotSS gets more out of much cleaner gameplay

Not him but I feel the same way, Baba's legacy has ultimately been slightly weakened in my mind because of the Scribblenauts-like nature of its solutions. It's still one of the best sokoban concepts and contributions to the genre, just not the purest in its design

I nevertheless hold Hempuli in very high esteem for his design skills overall
>>
>>749638560
Maybe I change my mind as I go through the later puzzles. But I don't really care for the mirror isles and am ambivalent on the skipping stones, which puts a damper on things. Maybe I should do the MxS puzzles now instead of leaving them for the end,

>>
>>749651025
you're about to do only crossover puzzles for 20 hours coming real soon
>>
>>749650796
stones requires you to work backwards.
You usually know the goal, so you have trace the possible paths and then how those paths are possible, and then how you even set them up.
If Jon wasn't so attached to pointless homages with original designs, stones easily could have been the best section with refinements and proper difficulty progression
>>
>>749651128
you think stones doesn't have proper difficulty progression? i thought the very first level of stones being much more esoteric than any of the other initial campaigns set the tone just right. i might have immense trouble with it most times but certainly i thought it was signposted well that it was going to be immense trouble.

absolutely not, and it doesn't teach anything either.
> i thought the very first level of stones being much more esoteric than any of the other initial campaigns set the tone just right
This is a core issue with puzzle games, veterans see obscurity and ill-defined domains as a meta-puzzle to solve. And designers like Jon think "just experiment bro" is akin to "invisible tutorials". But games need to define their domains, especially ones as intensely arbitrary as puzzle games.
>>

The official messaging is that it was the only campaign with a name that didn't feature its primary mechanic. Whether that's a cover story or not, one can only speculate.
>>
>>749651339
You should be fair here, the rest of the game AND everything after Skipping Stones 1 does exhibit a "gentle hand" design philosophy that coaxes the player into discovering whatever tools they need. Skipping Stones 1 is the exception here, with the player tossed right into the deep end.
>>
>>749651549
>the rest of the game AND everything after Skipping Stones 1 does exhibit a "gentle hand"
Of course, Heroes is great for this, and you can tell it got the most attention and care. I just wish the other sections weren't so disjoint in comparison.

>has puzzles that take a long time to execute, but it's not annoying because you know the solution is going to work once you see it and there's enough wiggle room that you won't get cucked by an errant block placement 30 turns ago

Honestly, in hindsight, stones 1 is a tutorial of sorts. Everything you do in it is is elaborated on tenfold, so much so that when you go back to play it you are a bit mindblown at the struggle you once had. Other anon said "just expierement bro" is not akin to progression, but with how much more tricky things they through at you in other stones levels, it kinda needs to throw people in the deep end to truly internalize how the stones work. At least thats my take.

What are you struggling with specifically? To be honest I think its more accessible because its not that tight of a sokoban and more about problem solving/expierementing. I haven't even played SSR but from what I seen, at least early on, its just a pure sokoban. To make an analogy, figuring out the specific steps on how to maneuver the peg so it fits the hole stresses me way more than in Order where its more about finding the right peg and hole and the execution is easy.
>>
>>749653309
I think this cleric gimmick has to be the best in the entire game. Some puzzles I was struggling with, but when you figure it out and you are pushing or pulling her to the win its very satisfying
>>
>>749653309
I did this level 2 days ago, and I am looking at it now pretty stumped
>>
>>749653426
I did heroes 1 2 3 and at some point I didn't see a way to progress in the overworld so I went east
did mirrors 1 2 3 and then same issue no overworld progress that I could see, went south
got filtered by the very first level lol, if that's supposed to be a tutorial it went over my head, I'll go back later, went west
did beam 1 2 then overworld opens up, have at least 3 puzzles I can do but feel filtered by all 3 right now
and in many levels there are mechanics I just find tedious, annoying, frustrating rather than fun or clever
also I find it's often somewhat messy instead of truly elegant
haven't seen any crossover yet
it's 6/10 by sokoban standards so far whereas SSR became an instant favorite
>>
as someone who doesnt own the game its kinda odd to read people going "I didnt understood a mechanic but now I do and it was mildly satisfying to solve a puzzle"

>Is there a way to activate the mirror at a distance
you activate it while standing within the same 6x6 square it's located in
>>
>>749655247
>Is there a way to activate the mirror at a distance?
You can try. The mirrors work from anywhere in the square they are in as long as they are aligned with you. Also the levels loop too remember.
>>

I solved it by making a ton of duplicates of the stone and building a bridge, with the help of a clone. Didnt touch that bait lilypad

I cant believe it was so simple. (It always is, i love this game) Up and down that level for an hour and never once walked to the one square that solves it automagically.

Thanks anons for the hints
>>
i think this contradiction needs to be addressed. are you playing the game by asking others to do it for you? isn't wracking your brain part of the fun of puzzles? or are you happy just completing the puzzle no matter the method?
>>
>>749656070
>wracking
this is what happens when i try to use unfamiliar vocabulary
>>
>>749656070
some people don't adhere to the typical purity of solving things completely blind to have it be valid. They have self-defined rules where vague hints or guidance is fine, and some just think the effort alone is enough even if they got backpacked through it.
(I am a purity believer though, hints tend to stifle your brain in coming up with new avenues of thinking.)
>>
>>749656109
It's not strictly wrong. Racking is straining (it comes from tying people to "the rack" and pulling them apart to torture/kill them) and wrack is a sailing term for getting damaged or tossed around. So if you're going insane trying to figure something out either spelling works.

>>749656525
i'll probably make people even angrier by asking this, but what is the point of people stating their number of puzzles completed and hours passed if they also relied on hints? each hint is potentially hours saved, maybe days or perhaps wouldn't be completed at all if not for it. if it were other genres i would agree, but this is the puzzle game where integrity somewhat matters

You unlocked that space, you'll need it to move him to the right spot

There are almost no red herrings in the game. Anything that seemed important is important.

i did it twice in demo and retail and still do not remember the solutions, but you definitely need to line up the gem by moving it through water to your left

Sometimes my first idea is what works and the puzzle takes 10 seconds. Other times my second idea is what works and the puzzle takes me 20 minutes

Not really a hint, but try thinking about what are your options to get someone to the final exit at the bottom, a bridge is impossible it seems

Does the difficulty level increase in the post/late game or it's always easy/medium?

I'm only about 15-20 levels into the post game stuff and it the same difficulty because it introduces new stuff and ramps up similarly to when it introduces new stuff in base game.

I'm a little upset. if you sprint you fall in the water, if you walk you make it. this cost me like 30 minutes

It truly is amazing that Blow refuses to use state machines for an elaborate puzzle game, and manually juggles bitmask flags and if else jungles
>>
>>749667947
brainlet programming take, they're logically equivalent
what makes the game so complex is he decided to mix all the game together so the real-time stuff from stones and the promise has to work with the complicated transactional mechanics of regular sokoban games
>>
>>749668072
I have to assume anon meant atomic state switches which you're saying don't exist?
>>
>>749667769
oh thats how you solve that, i did the same thing ffs
>>
>>749668116
"state machines" are when you create classes to represent states with enter and exit functions
>>
>>749668072
>they're logically equivalent
They're quite literally not.
State machines are automatic resolving while he manually manages everything.
>>
>>749652485
>>749634993
solved after a night's sleep. was trying some galaxy-brained scheme w the first stone which led me down the wrong track, after resetting for the umpteenth time and trying something else it turned out to be simple
>>
>>749668226
its very easy to manually create a state machine with if-elses
>>
>>749668215
I'm not sure I agree with that definition. To me a state is a value from some finite set, and a transition means updating the value to a different one in the same set. Most likely that should be done atomically (one-shot) but as the mp4 shows there's an `if (sprinting)` in the middle of it, which seems questionable.
>>
>>749668336
I assume he meant the architecture and not the logic because he's talking about if-else and bitsets
The logic can't be done purely atomically / transactionally because the game incorporates real-time mechanics
>>
>>749668537
>because the game incorporates real-time mechanics
he has an entire transaction system with entity actions. It could be atomic, unless he's doing shenanigans and manually patching for certain cases.
>>
>>749657437
Sure bro
That's why you have 40 hours and 90 completed
Sure
>>
>>749668757
Yeah he does, I said it can't be ENTIRELY transactional
Characters walking / falling happens over time and it's not instant like traditional Sokoban
>>
>>749668805
>Characters walking / falling happens over time
it's still just tiles with a Z level. he tracks and commits the active one and was showing off debug stuff when someone brought up the movement and animations.
>>
>>749668989
It's tiles that objects move between over time
>>
>>749669002
>It's tiles that objects move between over time
He tracks entity distance on the active tile, and switches at like 51% of the tile width. It's more noticeable if you play with skipping stones in slow-mo and do water collisions.
>>
>>749669116
I know, that time factor is why the way events happen could change based on how fast you were moving (even if it was a bug)
If it was a Sokoban game with no real-time mechanics like Baba is You then it's easy to write airtight state machines with no bugs
>>
>>749668336
Not any of these anons, but its not because he was sprinting he fell. It has to do with what the other anon said, the real time nature of the game. He basically outran the flame perpendicularly and his state was never updated. Probably would have happened regardless of how the states were managed because they must have done something out of order when determining states. I know it has nothing to do with sprinting directly because I have done something similar while walking in a level where a dragon glides on a lilipad parallelly with you and you have to walk in tandem over gaps. I was holding up (the direction of the gap) so I could walk across it the first frame I was allowed, and my cleric kept falling in the gap even though from a gameplay perspective they are not supposed to be able to walk over the gaps unless they are going to be a in a flamed state. I would have to assume its some kind of side effect to the in-between frames they give when lillipads and skipping rocks are moving between squares where you can still hit them. I dunno, I've never coded a game before
>>
Do I only unlock the druid section if I do something specific in other island? I miss my heroes man....
>>
last for thief is CUTE
>>
>>749669351
actually, I might be completely wrong now that I think about it, I think he was walking on the gap because he was already in a flamed state on the solid ground. I dunno forget anything I said
