>>
>>749604773
Doesn't matter, AI recomps are inherently bad because of the nature of the process itself.
It's a fun curiosity but the actual result is inevitably bad because there's only so much you can do by trying to reverse engineer machine code through an LLM, you might get some cases where a game is kinda sorta playable but you gotta take multiple caveats with that.

Nobody fucking wanted this shit except for games that had extensive ROM hacking, and it was less about being able to compile for a PC and more about having good source code to work on as a base instead of hand-injecting assembly into a ROM.
There are so many goddamn hardware edge cases that make static recompilation a generally terrible idea.

As a programmer, I personally played around with it a bit and what I've concluded is that while it's capable of generating code, it often generates code full of mistakes, bugs and sub-optimal nonsense. Sometimes it just outright generates code I can only describe as an abomination.
Like, I told it to to write C code to list files in a directory and do something with that information and you know what it fucking did? It redirected the stdout file descriptor, called system("ls -l") and parsed the output with a bunch of for loops.
>>
>>749605738
It's more like the slopbot can do 80% of the job, but you still need to manually do 20% of the job yourself and/or tardwrangle the bot through multiple iterations of debugging. In theory this is still an accelerant. However, for your typical talentless jeet retard who is doing this in the first place, that's 100% too much work. If the slopbot can't do it completely right first try, it's either worthless or they just dump the raw slopsolution on the public and tell them to deal with it. But, again, retarded jeets like this are the only people using the tech in the first place. The ultimate blackpill about AI is that it really does remove virtually all technical barriers to achieving your creative vision. Without that filter, it immediately reveals that most people's creative vision is complete worthless dogshit. Just put the fries in the bag and let your betters do the thinking, lil bro.

>decomp/recomp is the holy grail for modders and tinkerers, cracks the game wide open and gives theoretically unlimited potential for fucking around
>notoriously difficult to achieve manually because code is practically illegible and a lot of grunt work is required to properly reverse engineer
>AI is great at grunt work and can theoretically reverse engineer entire games in a fraction of the time humans take
>glory hounds and clout chasers put AI to work and start sweeping up all the big projects that have been in the works for years or have been white whale status
>AI code is entirely unreliable and the prompters can't correct bad code since they don't know what they're looking at to begin with
>new recomps are buggy, incomplete or riddled with inaccuracies
>existing decomp teams demoralised and falling apart due to tidal wave of AI
>prompters uninterested in actually tidying their mess
TLDR; prompters are flooding the scene with shoddy work, killing existing scene with sheer volume and have zero interest in supporting the scene hereafter

In company I work, we using ai coding agents and they are really useful. You still need to have knowledge to verify and give correct tasks.
As example I am backend developer but I need to migrate from CRA to VIte for Front End. Done 99% with AI, just tested thing myself for bugs and asked agent to fix them. Took me 3days, manually it would take me weeks

Not true. You retards always go for "muh horses were replaced by cars" because you're too braindead to realize that cars CREATED entire new sectors: assembly lines, mechanics, parts manufacturing, etc.

Computers CREATED entire new industries and calculators were a tool that allowed people to make complex calculations quicker and eventually led to advances in pretty much every single area. Even in cases in which people were out of jobs, they could usually sidegrade to related fields or change to other areas.

AI is not creating new industries or new jobs. It's being marketed as a way to get rid of workers who now have absolutely nowhere else to go because they want to automatize everything (except white collar executives and bottom of the barrel manual labor). The way AI is being financed is also pulling out resources from every single industry to the point scientists must put AI somewhere in their research even if it's unrelated to get a sliver of funding.

AI is not creating value, it's extracting value from every single area.
>>
>>749605432
> I’d call any coder who refuses to explore whether AI could make their work processes more efficient a dumbass
Then you’re a short-sighted retard who doesn’t understand how enshittification works and can’t recognize the inherent stupidity in building a personal workflow that relies so heavily on a subscription to a software service, especially one that is demonstrably hemmhoraging money and is obviously due for a major reckoning where service gets exponentially worse and price gets exponentially higher.

Is this really your first rodeo? Do you really not know how this works? The service is deficit financed by venture capital so it can offer you high value at low cost. It gets you addicted and crowds out more sustainable alternatives, leaving itself with a technological monopoly. Then once you have nowhere to go, it triples the price every month and slashes its development budget, while seeking “new revenue streams” in the form of advertisers and other corporate partners who view you as the product rather than the customer.

You’ve seen this. You’ve seen Google do it, Netflix do it, Facebook do it, Uber do it, Spotify do it, Amazon do it, it is a completely standard silicon valley “blitzscaling” playbook and it ALWAYS ends with you getting your asshole resized to fit some kike’s forearm. How are you still not learning this?

I don't see the fucking point in these recomps in the first place. if a good emulator like dolphin exists, there's no point. emulators are still generally better, unless you can get an actual native port AND source code via decomp that allows for real modding possibilities, then it's just AIsloppers trying to butt their way into a space that doesn't belong to them. I say this as someone who isn't some scenefag who spends time coding for these projects, just a passer by (and I use emulators).
>>
>>749607168
The difference is a calculator is more efficient than a human. An AI model is not. A calculator doesn’t have to boil lakes dry and consume 30% of a city’s electrical output to miscount the Rs in strawberry.

Wow it’s almost like the hyper-aggressive datacenter arms race, where decades’ worth of computer parts are dumped in boxes in vacant buildings that won’t even be plugged in for years and have no forecasted demand even then, is being coupled with deliberate supply side constraints to engineer extreme scarcity of all local compute components. And of course model capability is directly tied to size, nobody is retarded enough to believe a local deepseek instance can do anything close to what Astra or Opus 5.6 can do.

I can’t see how the conditions are being engineered where the only way to have access to this technology is to rent it from the Big 7. What a completely ridiculous idea. Technological monopolization isn’t a cornerstone of the blitzscaling “market disruption” phase anyway so why would I worry about that? Then the recording industry robbed three generations of musicians utterly blind and even to this day the only way to make a living as a musician is live performance, which is still in demand because recorded music is so ubiquitous it’s become background noise.

The only good thing about recording technology was that it also enabled recording as an art form, and forms of musical output that can’t be achieved without editing.

I'm a 2D/3D artist and I embrace it. I think a lot of people talking about artists don't realize most of us gladly use it. Just because one uses AI doesn't mean your work is one click generate

Take my L4D campaign for example. I've posted about it before. I used AI to generate me a base cracked snow texture for this frozen pond. I edited it in photoshop until it was seamless and it looked how I wanted, then I made the normal/specular map. I used AI to upscale and enhance Valve's snow and pine tree textures (and to add snow to the pines). There are others in this image, but most people can't often spot them and to what degree.

You're always going to have talentless fucks making shit, and I understand the hate towards them. But I'm still using it for the things I don't want to spend all day on. My goal is the the final look. I don't care how I get there. You play it or you don't, makes no difference to me. I'm happy with the work.

To be fair the recomp tool don't need to be smart to be made, just grab the emulator code that let you read the game, good now you can get the actual code from the game, in fucking assembly.
Then they convert the assembly into C++ but lie about it being native, they're essentially building a xbox assembly emulator and it's not that hard to do. Same with the GPU part, it's already directX, just hijack the draw call to another directX version and it just work.

Calculators, even analog ones, deterministically give you the right answer all the time.
Also a human calculator(that used to be a real profession) was not a physicist or real mathematician. It was low income, low skill job where you would just do mundane, repetitive calculations for the actual scientist who was doing all the thinking.
If anything, it was the opposite situation. Humans would produce slop calculations that had to be double checked and digital calculators replaced them because they are way more reliable. On the other hand, AIs produce much lower quality code and need to be doubly checked all the time in order to not cause serious technical debt.

The real problem is that they're not even decomps, they're assembly emulators using code injection for graphics and audio. Sure it's a native emulator but lmao.
Now, when someone actually made a full decomp they would take extra time to make it work with actual modern PC features and would get rid of all the proprietary shit so people can mod it properly.
And technically using AI to speed up the process would allow you to do the same but it also mean you have no actual understanding of the code so you will never actually use it and understand the limitations and feel the need to remove them.
And also, AIfags are so lazy they won't even care about making it good, they have no pride. They'll throw it out the door and let people figure it out.

This. Just like how recording video was used as a way to extract money away from entertainers. Instead of playing a live show and getting paid for it, and knowing based on the size and reaction of the audience how much they should generally be paid, recorded films meant only the company distributing the videos knew how successful they were. It's how they were able to lie to the Three Stooges for decades and tell them "Sorry guys, we'd love to pay you more than union scale, but comedy shorts aren't that popular", despite the Stooges being one of the biggest acts of the era.
Think about it. The entertainer performs a live show, there was 10,000 people in the audience, and they all loved the show. That entertainer could probably argue to get 60% of the ticket sales or more, since they brought in a full house and the crowd left happy. If everyone paid a dime for the show, that will end up with about $600 in the entertainer's pocket for a night's work. Same entertainer makes a comedy video that takes about a weeks worth of work, it gets played nationwide to millions, and the company tells the entertainer "Sorry, it didn't do that well", and gives them a check for $100, pocketing the thousands/millions of revenue they got from the theater owners.
You can argue the entertainer has now been seen by millions instead of 10,000, but the lion's share of income from their effort is no longer going to them, it's now going to some company.

You have to understand that the average pajeet shilling for AI actually thinks being able to "prompt" is some advanced mindblowing skillset rather than the absolute most basic level of grasping how to feed instructions to a computer, and at such an abstracted/high ((easy)) level that even without knowing anything about programming you can wrangle gen-AI within seconds

i tried really hard to make ai work for me but it is the literal definition of a rube goldberg machine factory. you give it the most simple task in the world and it will find a way to make it insanely over engineered and over complicated. no matter what, no matter how many times you prompt "simple, human readable, dont overabstract" you will eventually end up with a fizzbuzz enterprise codebase.
>>
>>749615626
it mystifies me that anyone ever took the idea of a "prompt engineer" seriously enough that the term even entered popular consciousness let alone actually be considered a real job
like that's one of the first things companies are going to use ai to automate, who in their right fucking mind would think that's a good career to persue as an ai user

when I'm done with CTR, I go play Ridge Racer, when that gets old, something like F-Zero or DKR. Once those get old too then some other racer I've never tried before. After that, keeping in mind I've also played a bunch of other games with months and months between those racing games, I will replay CTR, maybe every 6 years or so, and there's a remake of it as well. Since my brain is healthy and normal, this is standard and acceptable to do. Since your brain has been absolutely cooked by environmental (lead, plastic, recreational vaping) and behavioral (short form media, multitasking) factors, you constantly need a drip feed of something NEW FLASHY AND EXCITING. I genuinely pity you. You are subhuman. The perfect consoomer.

>>
The most I've used AI for was just having it determine what kind of encryption X thing is using on the network stack, for the sake of reviving old multiplayer modes in games. Even though 90% of the time it's just some variation of blowfish, it saves me the time figuring out its special-snowflake implementation of it (hi Japanese developers).

When you can give the model an isolated method to manage, it's a time saver, since it's easy to read over the result and compare the input/output of said method, since games in my use-case just outright break when that kind of thing is handled incorrectly.

this is very much an arguing on the internet type of thing where the nuances of the issue being discussed are completely disposed of in favor of scream-crying at each other in circles all day
there absolutely are use cases for ai technology (though i personally don't think it's there yet) but it's not hard to see how people balk at even that kind of statement considering the most prolific applications of ai we know of so far include (but are not limited to) enabling a bunch of grifters with no skills/passion/talent to rip off things people actually like, causing tons of problems because people have switched their brains off completely in favor of letting ai do their thinking for them and almost starting a war between the united states and china because grok fucked up

>Implying that automatically decompiling machine code is the same as having access to the actual source code
>Implying any of these dogshit decomps/recomps are anything but yet another desperate attempt at AI boosting from Anthropic/OpenAI
If any of those were actually worth bothering with corporations would have already sent a literal army of lawyers, M$ themselves would have immediately started the AI-locaust, but the truth is it's nothing to write home about because it's another inside job to try and convince people to buy Claude subscriptions only to find out that these decomps are buggy messes because surprise surprise, machine code=/=source code and running that through an LLM is not gonna magically port your game perfectly because the LLM is trying to translate machine code through pattern libraries that have very little to do with the actual piece of software.
And by the way, since you're clearly too stupid to understand why this thing is happening, this is also an attempt to set a precedent for doubling down on SaaS because now le big scary hacker known as 4chinz is totally gonna steal our IPs and also redistribute them with malware, yep yep! The worst part about this trend is that it's slamming the brakes on actual recomps/decomps/ports/whatever.
Sloppers are staking dozens of games without thinking so people are seeing them and saying "There's already a port, I'm not going to bother attempting to make one." For super popular games you might still see real projects here or there but for fringe shit like Deadly Premonition or Lost Odyssey you're up shit's creek. And in my case, somebody is. This was my favorite splinter cell back on Xbox and I'm glad I'm able to revisit.

Creating completely irrelevant tangent arguments means you don't have anything and you've lost.

Most of them haven't been updated in at least a month or 2 (about 25 for 1 month, 11 for 2).

I'm going to give them a grace period until the end of January next year, since the holidays are coming up and unless they're no-lifers, they'll be busy n' shit, until it can be definitively said that these were abandoned.

Also, particular devs are putting all their eggs in one basket grabbing what they can while only focusing on 1 or 2 games.

I dunno how anyone is vibe coding stuff that works.
I was profiling my vibed program yesterday and it decided to multithread a file processing workload by spinning up then killing a thread per file, common workload was 50k small files.
I manually updated it to spin up 8 threads and just give each thread ~6250 files. Times went from 300ms per file to 11ms per file.

This was Astra + Sol

>The issue is moreso lazy people than the AI usage.
The problem is the work to fix up what the AI barfed out is harder than the actual work without AI. So non-lazy people who actually intend to make a quality product will either realise they have to start over or just not use AI in the first place. Makes it really easy to just know that any AI first project is doomed and safe to ignore.

Older generations spent years building emulation from scratch, but today's gamers live in a golden age where the technology to port almost any game to pc exists. It's frustrating to see so many spoiled zoomers just complain about bugs and optimization rather than taking the initiative to learn the code and fix the performance issues themselves. I guess this is what they meant by learned helplessness.

I finished Astro Bot Rescue Mission, which rn you can only play with a Jurassic VR headset and is exclusive to PS4 and had a great time with it, and I could count on the fingers of one hand the bugs. And it is still a very early build. The same with Ace Combat 6, which had huuge bugs in Xenia, while in the recomp the only issue I found was texture flicking in one or two stages, which I fixed by restarting the game.

It’s worth noting that static recompilation is a relatively new process in the emulation scene. Most of the time and effort spent prior to this was developing JITs for emulators rather than libraries for static recompilations. So the major surge in recomps is not (just) because you can halfway vibeslop one with ease, it’s also because nobody was really doing them at all until a few years ago.
>>
>>749651371
All because of a misquoted dev.
The quote was about EARLY MICRO-optimizations (i.e. machine-specific shit) being bad (because you're gonna radically alter the whole program constantly, so squeezing an extra cycle or 2 early is retarded) a long time ago (when every cycle and byte mattered)
Optimization has always been important. Customers HATE slow, bloated, unresponsive software
>>
>>749651754
No, it’s the motto because labor spent optimizing may be labor wasted when you don’t know the bottlenecks. Optimizing a code loop to save 3 microseconds when it sits in line behind a code block that takes 400 milliseconds is wasted labor. That’s the idea, and the problem is that “good enough” mentality is why the bloat explosion over the last 20 years has happened

>Optimization has always been important. Customers HATE slow, bloated, unresponsive software
Nobody making software cares what their customers want. Customers will take whatever garbage you give them. Any swe who disagrees will be fired and replaced with an indian and a Claude instance.

I know you are a retarded faggot with his head up his own ass but for the rest of the class, that argument has existed for a long time, starting with Gen X complaining how for their parents it was all too easy, all they had to do was show up and shake someone's hand for a job. Homer Simpson only had a High School degree, I don't recall if he actually finished high school, but he had a wife, three kids, two cars and a home at 34 and that is what boomers deem a loser in a cartoon. The average millennial is still living with room mates and about to hit 40.

The problem with over automatization will always be that it replaced more jobs than it generated and anything left was given to illegals or shipped offshore.
>But it is replacing MEEEE!
