I don't care. It's a super cool weapon and really satisfying to use.
People who refuse to touch it because it's popular among casuals are some of the dumbest faggots in existence.

It's actually very lame to use. People only use it in PVP because the weapon skill comes out in like 6 frames, making it very difficult to react to. A magic infused uchi does more damage and lets you use more satisfying weapon arts like glintstone pebble or carian sovereignty
>>
>>749613725
LS is one of the least casual-friendly weapons in MonHun as it actually requires you to learn the monsters unlike most other weapons.

I actually prefer that you use it, it's one pf the easiest weapons to parry in the game. It'll make it easier to kill you when I invade you.
>>
>>749613819
Using an int scaling weapon that used to be PVP meta 3 years ago for the whole game doesn't actually reduce the challenge. It's arguably not even the best option for int/dex weapons specifically.
>>
>>749613819
Bro's stuck in 2020. Moonveil hasn't been OP for a very long time. It's still good, but it's a far cry from what it was at the game's launch.
>>
I mean, as far as kats go it's one of the cooler weapons, I personally prefer the Chimpveil, RoB and the Sword of Night but it's still a cool weapon for a Selian themed build.
ER has so many cool weapons it's hard to choose though, same with spells.
>>
>>749613936
any strong weapon with a spammable long range weapon art is a cheese weapon, people use it for the WA, not the scaling

like ROB and blasphemous sword
>>
>>749613618
Man how the jap convinced an entire generation of nerd thinking this weapon is cool
>>
>>749614060
RoB's WA is pretty trash nowadays.
It's probably the worst ARC weapon second only to Varre's bouquet, but even Varre's bouquet has some funky gimmicks like being one of the few somber weapons that can be infused and being a mace, what salvages RoB is the fire damage really.

ROB is mediocre. Transient moonlight is pretty good, but the range is less than almosg all sorceries, do you even play this game?

Blasphemous Blade is still fucking bonkers. At least it's locked behind maybe THE most out of the way boss in the game besides like, Malenia
>>
>>749614157
Sabres are cooler and more fun to use.
>>
>>749613618
I think it has made somewhat of a comeback thanks to Renala's charm buff.
>>
>>749614389
Sort of, but Uchi/Nagakiba with Iai stance are still better off because they can also run Rellana's charm and deal much higher damage for less FP.
The extra projectile is nice to have but ever since they removed the stacking with the physical hit of the blade it's just okay.

If you mean the katana in general, it's not really the Japs themselves that did that. The weapon was featured in a lot of 80s/90s American action movies because a lot of directors from that time were proto-weebs. The katana creates a cool contrast to Western fashion and it's honestly one of the more practical self-defense swords for modern times as it's compact enough for theoretical everyday carry. After all, the katana is designed to be a self-defense weapon carried during everyday life, not a battlefield or a dedicated dueling weapon.

It's a brittle two-handed sabre with no hand protection. A good everyday carry would be a real workhorse like a navy cutlass but there's no real romance for those outside of fantasy pirate ones because the real ones were functional and ugly.

>Being pretty is part of what makes it practical, because realiatically you were unlikely to actuallybever draw it in anger.
That's also why rapiers and smallswords were typically so heavily decorated. Smallswords in particular were often only decorated on the underside of the hilt since that was the only part likely to be visible in public. But you can actually have a sensible middle ground, that's what officer's swords were supposed to be.
>Also you can use it with one hand.
Katana's kind of suck to use in one hand, there's a reason most dedicated one-handed swords don't have extended grips.
>>
>>749615658
>Katana's kind of suck to use in one hand,
I mean they're a bit larger than ideal, but it's fine. I have a WWII shin gunto that my great uncle brought home from the war and it's reasonably comfortable with one hand.

>>
>>749616180
they can in ER, though that doesn't mean much as every weapon type can shoot some kind of projectile
>>
>>749615929
It's a sticking point for me because there's certain techniques that don't work well with an extended grip, doing a No. 1 cut wrist moulinet with a grip over a certain length is a recipe for disaster. Broadly speaking these things come down to personal preference but I still think a more durable if less sharp blade that flexes well is overall a more sensible choice if you ever need to consider using it in anger.

>>749616080
A two-handed grip binds up your movement options. Also you never know when you'll want a free hand to do anything else.

Ever since stumbling my way thru DS1 with a dex/int build I thought was cool because I heard buffing was good (it was less good than just using that int to plaster everything with soul spears but it worked) I've made a tradition of trying for a dex/int katanafag on my first playthrough so moonveil was made for me.

Then after suffering through with a dex weapon I rolled a str character and realized for the 5th time in a row that str was ezmodo

They do look very pretty. The nicest one I ever saw was just the mounting for a Heian era sword in a place in Ginza, but it scabbard was so narrow that I doubt the sword was ever intended for actual use.
Sabres aren't as aesthetically pleasing but they have their own charm and I wish they had more presence in vidya.
>>
>>749616539
Scholar's armament on a Keen weapon in ER is legit better than using Magic weapons, it's FTH that has buffs that don't scale all that well, although DEX/FTH with elecritify armament is probably more efficient.

But I love invading with Moonveil. It's an incredibly deadly weapon in the hands of someone who knows how to pvp. Parries are super easy to bait, especially now that everyone is so trigger happy with them due to the parry buffs.
Picrel is my favourite INTvader build.
Moonveil as your main weapon with Butchering Knife, Dryleaf Arts, Scythe, Carian Regal Scepter and a 2nd Staff of Loss for hardswaps.
Butchering Knight being your Waves of Darkness L2 stick (mainly because the stats can't afford the Zweihander but also because WoD on the Zweihander has become way too predictable)
Dryleaf Arts mainly to Palm Blast corners but it's also good at chasing people down.
Scythe to fight shields since INT doesn't have good ways to deal with them.
Carian Regal Scepter just for its ash of war.
And the 2nd Staff of Loss is to cast Night Comet and Night Shard, the only sorceries on the build. And the off-hand SoL is there to double the Night sorcery boost since that makes Night Comet stronger than Comet fired by Lusat's.

Katanas are one of the few weapon classes that are overwhelming INT oriented outside of some ARC options.
Funnily enough there's not a single FTH katana, which is fitting for the fedora tipper weapon class.
>>
>>749618435
>Katanas are one of the few weapon classes that are overwhelming INT
No, they're not. Moonveil and Meteoric Ore Blade are the only ones. Everything else is dex. Even that fancy katana from the DLC that notYoda uses.
>>
Rapiers were the deadliest weapons back then, eventhough the weren't aesthetic.
Cuts can be healed without modern medecine, but deep stabs? Literally imposible since you need surgery to fix organ damage. One stab on your torso and it's over.
Romans understood this, and that's the reason why the gladius was so effective and widespread.

Moonveil falls off hard towards the lategame. Early game, where you can just get the meteor staff, the rock throw spell, kill the wyrm, kill Alexander for the skill buff talisman, get somber +6 without much effort, yeah sure. It's neat to carry you up to the point where you can just re-spec into an 80 int beast. Then you use it as a sidearm.

If you actually played the games instead of watching videos, you'd know that everything straight swords do in souls games, katanas do better because not only do they have longer range, they're faster, do higher dps and actually incorporate irl moves unlike longswords where 95% of the moveset is retarded swipes and 5% thrusts. >Except for shotguns. I like modern shotguns.
That might have something to do with the fact that shotguns haven't actually changed that much over the past century or so. A hunter from 1900 could probably figure out a modern shotgun pretty quickly because it's really not all that different from the model 1897 they used to feed the family.

They don't?
>R1s
Straight swords are better, Katanas are slow, have worse posture damage and most don't have access to piercing damage either
>R2s
Straight swords are better, you have better posture damage, more range etc., Serpentbone/Sword of Night are the only kats that can compete due to their multihit R2s but they're still inferior to the straight sword R2s purely because the multihit R2 is slower, Sword of Night has a true combo for the uncharged WA into uncharged R2 and that's about the only notable thing Katanas have going on
>Powerstancing
Straight swords clear, period, powerstanced kats have the single worst powerstanced moveset of any two handed weapon and that includes axes/maces
>Guard Counters
Katanas' guard counters are abhorrent dogshit, neither are good, meanwhile SS have the best one handed GC in the game together with CSs
>Ashes of War
Again, Straight swords clear, Square Off alone is better than anything kats can do outside of Iai stance which is a worse Square Off, the Nagakiba singlehandedly carries katanas due to the bullshit hitbox and even that isn't enough to compete with something as simple as the Lordsworn SS.
>Somber weapons
Straight swords once again clear katanas, SoN&F alone mogs any katana, Regalia of Eochaid has unbelievable damage and amazing synergy with Malenia's GR, Coded Sword is an incredible pure FTH weapon and even the two swords of St. Trina allow cheese that no Katana offer, the only somber katana of note is the Moonveil, everything else is either mediocre or straight up bad.

I agree with basically all of this except the post nerf the Sword of night and flame is ass even with the dlc. Off the top of my head not a single other cameo buffed AoW is as bad as it. I'd like to interject for a moment. I tried Moonveil a year or so ago and found it pretty boring. I preferred the Meteoric Ore Blade with its unique heavies. L2 sticks stopped being impressive to me within the first month of playing Elden Ring; actually mastering the rest of the moveset of a weapon is the interesting part about the game's weapons, in my opinion. As a side note, I also can't believe Bloodhound Fang hard carries noobs. There's really nothing that remarkable about it besides the fact that it's an early somber weapon that can still be buffed.
>>
>>749641841
To be fair it does have a bonus to jumping attacks and GCS are already pretty strong in ER, I wouldn't use it over most GCS but it's fairly good as far as somber weapons go.
>>
>>749613819
Miyazaki constantly dumping powerful gear on your lap and then nudging your shoulder knowing that you’re a true gamer and you’ll reject it every time like he expects you to. Then when you finish the game he personally thanks you for ignoring him and says that all of the things he was constantly dropping on your lap, now a pile of weapons nearly touching the ceiling, was only intended to help casuals along but not you ever. He then boots up Skyrim and commends the game on its auteur “choose your own difficulty” design, calling Todd Howard on the phone and telling him that he will respect Todd’s vision and spend the entire game using nothing but an Iron War Axe rejecting all possible weapon upgrades that might cheapen the experience if taken. Todd ends the phone call confused and then delays TES VI to add a prompt to every weapon that says, “Yes we actually intend for you to pick up the better weapon that does more damage than your current weapon, this is an rpg”. As you leave hearing Miyazaki take 50 swings with his shitty axe to kill a dragon you trip on a shield (gasp) and die.
>>
>>749641947
I really don't care all that much for the CGS moveset honestly. I prefer Greataxes, Greatswords, and Heavy Thrusting Swords (particularly Queelign's Greatsword). I've also really been enjoying Great Katanas, and the fact that they finally put one in the early game has been a joy for me. I'm currently doing a maidenless playthrough with the Reed Great Katana as my main weapon. Already mostly finished Leyndell.
>>
>>749641841
It has huge AR and innate bleed that you can buff with even more bleed, and since it's somber it's an easy weapon to upgrade.
The iframes on the skill also means dealing safe damage against enemies whose moveset you don't already know, which is perfect for someone in their first playthrough.
>>
>>749642252
The skill is not intuitive to use for a noob though, and the iframes are only on the 2nd part of the skill. I've watched infinite noobs get killed thinking they get iframes on the first part.
>>
yeah it was a cool weapon. shame they nerfed it into the ground
>>
>>749642339
The backflip still dodges most attacks simply due to the distance it covers.
Another important thing is the quality scaling, which means any amount of STR and DEX will contribute to its damage, which in practice means that anyone with an unoptimized build will look at their weapons and notice that the Bloodhound Fang outdamages anything else they might have.
>>
>>749642802
>The backflip still dodges most attacks simply due to the distance it covers.
Yeah but you have to know when to use it and how to space using it at all if you intend to actually hit with the first part of the attack. There's a fair bit of mechanical knowledge you need to do those things effectively and noobs really don't have that. You're right about the scaling part though. Noobs have no idea how to build for weapons so it's only natural quality scaling weapons will look the best on paper.

Not really, all you need to do is walk up to something and press L2.
Even if you do get hit it'll be a trade, and the skill deals good damage + stagger, so you just keep doing it until the entire game dies.
Popular weapons are popular for a reason.

It's an early somber weapon with bleed with low requirements. That's literally enough. You can get it to +9 early and kill Morgott with like three L2's if you built right.

the kaiden nightlord

If you had actually played the game, you would know that the glintstone pebble ash of war has a followup attack where you do a very heavy stab forward with a satisfying THUNK that does a billion stance damage. Good in PVP too.

>>749622439

Bloodhound's Fang is one of the few buffable sombers. There aren't very many, Varre's Bouquet is also one of them.
>>
>>749643683
There is one reason.
Minimal steps to get MLGS:
1. Reach Altus plateau through preferred method and rest at any grace.
1. Kill Radahn.
2. Talk to Ranni.
3. Go through all of upper Nokron and get the fingerslayer blade, then give it to Ranni.
4. Go through Nokstella and kill Shadow Blaid.
5. Beat all of Raya Lucaria so that you can open the chest in Rennala's library.
6. Go through the lake of rot and kill Astel, marry Ranni on the moonlight altar

Also if you do it this as fast as possible, you're skipping all of Seluvis's shit, locking you out of a number of items, the most important of which for a hypothetical MLGS user being the magic scorpion ring

Steps to get moonveil:
Step 1: Go to Caelid and kill the boss of literally the first dungeon you encounter
>>
>>749622439
Nigger straight swords have one of the better movesets in the game (including just being straight up better than katana when power stanced) and square off is unironically arguably the best infusable weapon art in the game.
The only thing that kind of sucks about straight swords in ER is that you don't really get any great somber straight swords outside of maybe Ornamental and the highly stat committal and basically just a glorified wand SoNaF (Coded Sword is good, but it's good because it's an easy faith caster sidearm, you probably aren't basing your build around it).

>>749623982
>katanas do better
straight sword r1 string is faster, on average the length on ss is longer than katana (outside of washing pole which is admittedly pretty dumb), and katana are stuck dealing slashing damage (easily the worst physical damage type in the game) while ss gets standard (which is literally never a bad thing).
If you really want to bitch about something bitch about how blatantly overpowered the naginata is compared to every other standard spear.
>>
>>749644127
>scorpion ring

Scorpion rings are a very questionable choice for PVP but an easy pick for PVE.
>>
>>749644180
Nagi is only good on ARC builds, and even there the bloodfiend fork is better.
>>
>>749644384
The +10% physical damage taken isn't worth it in a game where damage is so overtuned to begin with. You get enough damage increase on MLGS from WJS and Godfrey Icon anyway, it's better to dedicate your remaining two slots to things that will help you survive longer.
>>
>>749643460
You don't need to trade with regular enemies because they get stunned by the skill, it straight up demolishes them.

fromsoft makes good katanas, the odachis have a good moveset too
but they aren't even trying for european sword movesets. The greatsword and curved sword movesets are mostly bad still, and they never do cool curved swords right, like messers or twohanded falchions
>>
>>749647449
Medium armor and 40-50 vig is enough to be comfortable even in Haligtree and the DLC even with a scorpion charm.
>>
>>749650576
They need to make Sabres its own weapon class instead of lumping them in with the fruity curved swords.
>>
>>749650576
If you look at the older Souls games you can see pretty clearly that they were at least trying with the Japanese swords and the rapiers, specifically working from kendo/kenjutsu and modern fencing. The rest they clearly had no idea what to work from. Which is a shame because other Japanese companies have gone out of their way to do research, the Junketsu no Maria team actually looked into recreating historical weapons and how they would be used when making the anime.
>>
>>749650842
they tried in Dark Souls 2 to give more realistic weapon animations and overall people clowned on them (didn't help the game was such a mixed bag otherwise in almost every element too)
>>
>>749650576
>>749650842
Also I'm all but certain that the "curved sword" moveset is based on modern Chinese dao techniques that are more performance art than sport, the silly flips are the biggest tell.
>>
>>749650909
It's funny to me that the Mirrah Greatsword moveset is still probably the best they've done for longsword moves and it still isn't that great.
>>
>>749613618
oh make no mistake, i refuse to touch it because it's an INT weapon
>>
>>749650576
>>749650842
The reason that the moves look right for katanas is because everyone knows at least basically what it's supposed to look like without research. Less than 0.1% of people have any clue what authentic claymore martial arts would look like or how it would meaningfully differ from how the game handles it. Plus, actually effective martial arts often looks kinda lame, and wouldn't even necessarily be the best choice when dealing with the fantastical combat scenarios the game presents.
>>
>>749651004
yes the ds2 alt greatsword moveset is good
ds2 also has better stances, holding the sword on the shoulder, rather than pointing forwards
>>
>>749651056
>because everyone knows at least basically what it's supposed to look like without research
that's just because they're japanese
obviously it's easier for them to make katana movesets, but it also wouldn't be particularly difficult to make better longsword movesets
>>
>>749644891
Funny because I’m playing the dlc for the second time and I switched to the scorpion charm for the first time AND dropped my heavy armor I’ve been using all fame for some variety simply because I found I was tanky enough at 50 vigor. Granted I’m not at PCR yet, but it’s definitely fine.
>>
>>749651121
>that's just because they're japanese
No, it's because kantanas and faux-martial arts are all over pop culture media. Almost nobody does or ever has given a shit about how long swords were actually used, in part because it looks kinda gay compared to handing out haymakers.
>>
>>749651209
that's ridiculous, the average westerner, even the average western game developer could not make a good katana moveset without watching at least a few kendo videos first
the difference is that traditional japanese martial arts persisted to modernity in the public consciousness, while traditional western martial arts did not. But it's no harder to make a moveset based on kendo than on traditional european swordfighting.
>>
>>749650842
You’re being a redditor, this is fantasy. Characters much stronger than a normal human irl, fighting against monsters most of the time. Using combat techniques designed by humans against other humans in either 1v1 or a battle context would be stupid as neither apply

When you are invoking “practicality” you are invoking larping, martial European tradition is substantiated in unarmed disciplines (eg wrestling) and twentieth century and later combined arms, pretending hemashit is either historical or practical is larping. It’s basically fanfiction without basis in history

>>749652127
You are projecting a vendetta against hema because you seem personally offended. I have nothing against hema, it is just not historic and not practical. It is larping. It is not actual martial tradition.

>>
>>749652161
>A reanimated skeleton without flesh or organs is completely different than a hollow, you know this
you're splitting hairs here
the point is that most combat techniques still apply. It doesn't matter if the enemy has a snake head, you still use the sword the same way 99% of the time
>>
>>749652421
dukes doesn't have that many hollows

According to who?
>>
>>749652505
it matters a whole lot because the practical technique for a snake monster man lunging his giant snake head at you is to cut up in a manner you'd probably never animate for anything else
monsters and "practical" animations run into this issue as a whole because the practical solution is going to be swinging your sword at a unique angle or stabbing it in a unique location contextually to the enemy you're fighting, there's not much else to it than that, everything's a matter of finding the most practical application of edge or point to vulnerable area.
>>
>>749652505

>>
>>749652592
>>749652636
you're retarded
the whole point is that the average enemy is mostly human, so it makes sense for the developer to make movesets based on how humans use swords on each other in real life
obviously this isn't realistic for many enemies in the game that are giant, or very inhuman like slimes. The developer can't and doesn't make different movesets for fighting different enemies. If fromsoft was designing specific animations for cutting off snakemen heads you might have a point.
most of the enemies are generally human, so they should design movesets that make sense when fighting humans. They already do this with katanas. The greatsword movesets are not designed to look like something for fighting monsters, they're just generic movesets that look like they were designed by someone who doesn't know how to use a greatsword, or how much one weights.
