I'm honestly convinced that for the large majority of steam users, thinking they got a good deal on some (probably buggy and last patched in 2012) abandonware because it was 80% is more fun that actually gaming. Have you ever seen steam cheevo percentages for the most basic shit that would take 10mins to get? Steam is a social media platform for kids who think gabe newell le savior of pc gaming xD and Valve knows it all too well.

Didn't Nintendo invent a device for betting on horse races? Incidentally, Nintendo was originally a playing card company; those cards were used to get around Japanese state regulations regarding card games.
>>
>>749621354
Physical PC gaming was crap, and DRM kept getting more and more dogshit; Sony, Microsoft, Ubisoft, and EA were the ones who created and ultimately killed off physical PC gaming by unleashing the industry's worst DRM garbage because they couldn't control piracy. Meanwhile, Steam gradually introduced improvements that made digital PC gaming far superior to the trash those companies were offering.
>>
>>749621242
Don't forget bringing full price digital only games; praise lord Gaben according to Steamies. The only thing this guy got right was stating a truth about piracy and that's about it.

>Only the cucks from videogames try to make an issue a cd player not working with their cassete tapes
I should have the freedom to burn my CDs onto cassette tapes and vice versa. That's not possible when people support physicuck DRM.
>>
>>749632616
Steam's DRM is less strict; it doesn't require online verification after the initial installation. Once it's installed on your PC, you can run it without an internet connection. You still need Steam, but you can easily stay offline the whole timebor, if you don't want to use Steam, there's Goldberg.
>>

>>
>>749632724
GOG is better for the games that they get to sell, sure, but there’s a snowball’s chance in hell that big publishers would agree to put their games available DRM-free day one, which means that they never have/had a chance to become the biggest player in the market.

>>
>>749632921
How is steam going to remote uninstall my games too then?
>>
>>749632828
All GOG gives you is an installer; otherwise, the same conditions apply as with any platform distributing the game. Copying and pasting DRM-free games has the same effect as using the GOG installer, except that the installer allows for better management such as compressing the files or putting them on a CD. Even so, it has tools (I think even native Windows ones) for creating your own installers.

The key economy is massive.
You can also play on PC without Steam, there's DRM free stores, there's Timmy giving you free games all the time.

No, that was when the "PC is dead and consoles are da best babeee!!!" bullshit was at its strongest. Getting cucked out of games daily, being desperate for a half-decent console ports, not being able to access many game series and genres without owning a console, living in a situation when if you had no interest in shooters then that killed off like 70% of what PC had to offer
After Steam took off we ended up living in a time where on PC you can have a huge library of genres and niches that previously were considered to be "never ever" for PC and we get hundreds of games weekly, tf are you talking about even

And yet Nintendo still doesn't know how to properly implement backwards compatibility into their consoles. The most they can do is have switch 2 play switch 1 games. No compat with WiiU or 3DS or Wii or any console prior. And as sony showed us this week, it's intentional to make you rebuy your games, or constantly hold onto old, decaying hardware.

>You do even know what happened those years?
I remember having to wrangle SecuROM and later GFWL to work, yes. Basically piracy was a given if you were palying on PC. Now at least you have the option to buy without having to worry if this shit will work some year later.
Also controls were a bitch, and games were having tons of compatibility issues right out the box, while console versions were flawless.

my point was that without steam nowadays PC gaming would still be looked as an afterthought with shit ports and issues.
If you pirate nothing changed for you basically, don't know why you're so worked up about it.

That said your actual ownership of that digital good happens if you treat it like a physical product (one time use; if you lose it, it's gone) But that is more on the person since the majority doesn't accept digital in ownable forms but for convenience.

Wouldn't say worse but most annoying. Happened to me with my Starcraft copy but I didn't do shit and went back to 98 for OS to play it

>Who says accounts have to be involved?
Digital is all about licenses. The consumer rejected them being treated as physical as their 1 payment = 1 use.

They cucks, simply that

>>749638110
>It's the same data, you just don't own digital

You'd choose to be wrong; fundamentally it's the same data for the software. The key is the format said data is delivered to the consumer.
>>
>>749638259
Out of charity, of course. They get my money because I have deemed them worthy. And in return I get ownership of their games.

And you can whine and cry all you want about how technically it isn't ownership because of some vague law written 30 years ago, but if you want to convince me, you're gonna have to prove it. That means fully rescinding, and deleting, all of my games and the copies of them that I've made. If you cannot, then I guess I own them.

>>749638434
>Don't lie on the internet; younger generations don't have the habit of backing up their computer's
Junior, I have been backuping up my games since the turn of 2010, from my very first USB thumb drive that contained 4gb of SNES roms and a stale, crappy version of ZSNES (that I played with on a keyboard because I didn't know how to make controllers work). All the way to the modern day, with multiple terabyte drives that contain thousands of games I've collected over the years.

>Happened to me with my Starcraft copy but I didn't do shit and went back to 98 for OS to play it
That's odd, because Starcraft doesn't give me an issue. And I actually own that game physically, and Brood war.

>Digital is all about licenses

>>749638573
>You'd choose to be wrong; fundamentally it's the same data for the software.
Again, wrong. Once it's on my computer, it's mine. I own it. It's property. It is no longer a rental or a service. It is on you to argue otherwise. You'll have to find some way to take it away.
>>
>>749638695
>Again, wrong. Once it's on my computer, it's mine. I own it.
No, you own the computer, its components. You control the data stored within.

>It is no longer a rental or a service.
It is. The thing you're missing is, in your case (assuming that's the only time you used it and never end up losing that data), the service was already served to you and you already exherted it by downloading the exe the first (and tentatively) only time.

>You'll have to find some way to take it away.
No, events simply happen without intentions. The common scapegoat digitalgoys use to try to make physical look in bad light is a fire breaking up in your house, stuff like that is the kind nobody is really free from.

>Junior, I have been backuping up my games since the turn of 2010

>And I rejected that. Sucks for those who are computer illiterate ITT, but alas you can't make a horse drink, even if you lead it to water.
You can't reject the truth. You'd be trying to argue against Steam and GoG; and they're clear you're getting a license first and foremost
>>
>>749638695
Your definition of ownership is wrong.
>>
>>749621354
Digital libraries are the natural evolution of owning physical media and it should be that way with laws to protect ownership of said libraries. But game devs and publishers and corporations are so obnoxiously greedy that they will fight any perceived loss of value even if it hurts them and everything around them. This is why people actively collect physical media beyond autistic reasons, because there's, understandably, very low trust between producer and consumer if you really look at it.
>>
>>749638951
>No, you own the computer, its components. You control the data stored within.
So I own the data.

>the service was already served to you and you already exherted it by downloading the exe the first (and tentatively) only time.
Now that I have the exe, they can't take it away.

>The common scapegoat digitalgoys use to try to make physical look in bad light is a fire breaking up in your house, stuff like that is the kind nobody is really free from.
But that's the funny part. Digital is immune to that due to the 3-2-1 rule. "3 backups, 2 in separate formats, 1 offsite". It is statistically impossible to lose my games when following proper backup protocol.

>Don't call people junior when you're a squirt. Since 2010?! hahahaha, that shit should have been since you first got a computer or at least the 90
I didn't get a computer until the early 2000s, and I didnt get high speed until late 2009. Before that I was sadly still a consolefag who didn't own his games because they were on flimsy pieces of plastic that often didn't work because consoles like the playstation were shoddily built chinese trash, and for some reason my nintendo consoles just refused to work unless I took the cartridge out and deep cleaned it with a cotton swab, and even then it was a tossup. Digital just werks.

>>749639070
>You can't reject the truth. You'd be trying to argue against Steam and GoG; and they're clear you're getting a license first and foremost
Steam and gog are really only there to act as repositories to download my games from, if I don't care to go to a pirate website and want to pay for them. After the transaction is complete, and the game is on my computer, they cease to have any control.
>>
>>749639320
We're talking about ownership. Not preservation.
>>
>>749639135
>Digital libraries are the natural evolution of owning physical media and it should be that way with laws to protect ownership of said libraries.
That's impossible since they're inherently different and should be that way, otherwise you'd be trying to twist a dynamic that simply works different. That and also the consumer chose digital as a service, Gaben was right; it's an access issue. That's why physical are products to buy and digital is a service to access and licenses came to be and were sustained as such since at least 40 years by now IIRC

Some goverments may want to change this because the Sony hissy fit but they're so minimal they won't change anything when the money from and consumer are not on their side. When it comes to digital people simply don't want to own what they pay for, I mean they surely will seethe when reminded the kind of frying pan they threw themselves in their stupidity, but they rather practicality over it in every other instance

No, you control the data. Own and control are 2 different things. Your Starcraft copy allows you to own the data but not control it.

>Now that I have the exe, they can't take it away.
You will never have that certainty, a fire, you lost it, got robbed, data somehow rot in there. Your only coping method is the control of the data to replicate it beyond the initial service. If you don't... the you'd be the service's bitch again for that one time

>But that's the funny part. Digital is immune to that due to the 3-2-1 rule. "3 backups, 2 in separate formats, 1 offsite". It is statistically impossible to lose my games when following proper backup protocol.
Except that is bold to assume people does that when they barely even do basic back ups.

>3 back ups
A fire in your house kills 2 and then the one in the cloud services goes down. Now what? You're bound to events, you are not inmune and never will. That's why we used to make back ups btw, not because it would be "impossible"

>>749639941
>Your Starcraft copy allows you to own the data but not control it.
Funny thing, the digital version of Starcraft is more versatile than the disk version. Since blizzard gave away the original and Brood War for free, I no longer need to fiddle with the disk or the stupid security code or installing it or any of that nonsense. And I can make copies of it. Kind of a fun way to show that digital is indeed superior.

>You will never have that certainty, a fire, you lost it, got robbed, data somehow rot in there.
Every single one is mitigated by the 3-2-1 rule, stated earlier. It is statistically impossible to lose 4-5 copies of a game you lost, all at the same time, so it's not even worth discussing.

>Except that is bold to assume people does that when they barely even do basic back ups.
I don't care about the normalfags. "I" do it, and that's what matters.

>A fire in your house kills 2 and then the one in the cloud services goes down.

>If it cannot be taken away, then it is owned.
False. Your definition of ownership is wrong because you're confusing ownership with preservation.

Also, in your haste to grandstand your blind faith you seem to have forgotten that you're supposed to be defending Valve.

Valve in no way facilitates your obsession with preserving data. Everything you have detailed is unofficial media consumption completely decoupled from Valve.

Can you explain to me why you call preservation ownership. Also explain to me why you impulsively do this as a defense of Valve, when this is unrelated to Valve's business operations?
>inb4 Valve makes it easy
Piracy was easier before PC storefronts.

>So they can't be taken away. Gotcha. Thanks for conceding.
They can. Unless you manage to have control over the data the license allowed you to access and somehow managed to never ever need it to dl again, which one can be never be sure of.

>Well, I had to deal with my games constantly stuttering and freezing because of a tiny scratch on the back. I still can't play my physical copy of Star Wars Rebel Assault 2 because of this.
Might be a hardware issue. Because a light scratch on a ps1 is not going to kill it, I confirmed that myself with that one missing a piece of the disc.

I have like 3 different bootlegs from the original copy. They're the same when it comes to be versatile, you have no idea how easy was to pirate games before digital.

>I don't care about the normalfags. "I" do it, and that's what matters.
You don't matter. When you argue it's because a majority, the majority of "I" doesn't exist; it's a cope.

>Who the hell said anything about cloud services. "offsite" literally means in another physical location.
Another place to be affected by unforeseen events. Cloud depends on physical locations to; there no such things as fully digital.

Yup. PC was the only platform where consumers could exercise their legal right to make backup digital copies. But since Valve took away ownership now all they get is the backup with no original owned media. You simply had to be there to know this and the person we are speaking to wasn't there.

Must've missed the memo. As a PC user, I don't need to hold allegience to any company. I forgot that's a thing that consoles have to do, though. Haha.

>Unless you manage to have control over the data the license allowed you to access
A good chunk of my games don't even need steamless or goldberg. The most effort I've had to exert was putting a notepad file in the install folder, and now boom. No steam required. You don't need it running, you don't even need it installed. I even tested this with an old laptop that didn't have steam on it. Transferred Stardew Valley, Environmental Station Alpha, and Hollow knight to it. All of them worked.

>Might be a hardware issue. Because a light scratch on a ps1 is not going to kill it
Maybe you got lucky. I had a similar problem with Mega Man Legends, where the game would constantly freeze during the assault on City Hall, and it would just perma-softlock while showing Bon Bonne hovering there. Playing the game digitally solved that problem.

>I have like 3 different bootlegs from the original copy. They're the same when it comes to be versatile, you have no idea how easy was to pirate games before digital.
I sure hope you didn't pay for those bootlegs. All this talk of chastising people for paying for digital, and yet I pray you don't pay for literal fake copies of a game.

And yet you didnt know crashing the collectible card market can get you sued, which is another thing actual TCG fans know. Except you, apparently. Fucking lmao

you don't know what gambling is

On PC?
No, securom and "Insert Disc 2 to play" did that.
>>
>>749652586
No, I already knew what the forbidden list is and I don't even collect or play yugioh.
>>
>>749652818
>admits he doesnt play TCGs
My sides!
>>
>>749652920
Not yugioh. Which is what the forbidden list is from. You're confusing this for something else.

so does no one else. the problem?

>Not yugioh. Which is what the forbidden list is from.
>still this clueless
I know I've proven my point and pulled a confession from you that you know nothing about theTCGs you dont play, but it's still too funny
>>
>>749652757
zoomers don't know anything about what physical pc games were like and how utterly shit they were
>>
>>749653120
I'm not conceding any ground. Sorry. Go troll somewhere else.
>>
>>749653231
>I'm not conceding any ground
>and I dont even play or collect
your words lol
I hope you learned a lesson about bringing up and hiding behind things you know nothing about. I had great fun teaching it
>>
Watch your fucking tone you little bitch
>>
>>749653453
KEK just found what you were talking about. It's the Reserved List which is a different thing from the Forbidden List. Easy confusion to make if you never really explored this hobby.
>>
>>749653668
>he finally asked claude and got the answer
Good for you!
>Easy confusion to make if you never really explored this hobby.
Now, now! A little late for the NO U!! accusations, dont you think?
>>
>>749653742
Yeah it took a while because you called it the wrong name and described it incorrectly. Thankfully I was able to prove you wrong in the end.
>>
>>749652757
>well they started it so it's ok i finish it!!
>>
>>749653846
>Thankfully I was able to prove you wrong in the end by proving you right
Top fucking lmao
There's a beauty to the way you cope, I'll give you that
>>
>>749653998
No coping on this end. Why are you being so performative right now?
>>
>>749654040
>Why are you being so performative right now?
>t. admitted he doesnt play tcgs and had to look it up several times already
Im just farming laughs and (you)s at this point

Yes?
Turn the other cheek is for cucks. Start shit, get hit. Simple as
>>
>>749654143
No I play TCGs and table top. I was confused because you were lying, that's all. Apparently you only play MTG and thought their company policy was a US law for all card publishers or something and then called it the by the name of a competitive ban list of a different TCG, and didn't do what you deacribed it did. You tried to flex knowlesge on one thing and fauled. But hey I did learn something so thanks!

>t. admitted he doesnt play TCGs or know anything about them
I also had great fun watching you fumble and seethe on your phone, trying desperately to damage control your ignorance of something literally all TCG fans know about. Truly beautiful cope.
>>
>>749654543
I don't think so. I think I've gotten one over on you so many times in the past that you're desperate for a win against me. That's all that is happening here. You're butthurt you lost again when you thought you had something. Thing is I don't have a fucking clue who you are.
>>
>>749654719
That's okay. You can think whatever helps you cope. It's still hilarious to watch
>>

Yep. Thanks for the laughs!

>porting Doom to Windows 95
Was it necessary? W95 runs DOS program natively just fine.
Doom95 is a glorified DirectX showcase because it's the first DirectX game.
>>
>>749655369
Like I said earlier, whatever helps you cope!
>>
>>749654935
to be fair claude may be able to do something more optimized than the current UE5slop engine
>>
>>749655840
Nothing to cope over really. I got to prove you were a liar and rub your face in it.

>>kills physical video games
Absolutely a good thing. Only consolefags that worship corporate branded plastic think otherwise
>>
>>749656104
Your insistence on deluding yourself for your mental health and my amusement implies otherwise. Your confessions earlier itt prove it. But sure.
