Snobbery about fantasy is why the popular conception of fantasy is 'Disney fairy-tale'. The quintessential example, Tolkien, has always been: 'our world, if the blanks of history were filled in'. Everyone that thought Game of Thrones was 'anti-fantasy' never even fucking read Le Guin, Garner, or Pratchett. Look at what Denis did to Dune: that is what has been done with 'fantasy' adaptations for sixty years.
