Their is a sincerity in the original games where even if you never grew up with Disney movies, you can still enjoy these worlds not because its DISNEY'S Alice in Wonderland but simply because its Alice in Wonderland cause that shit is just pure fantasy if that makes any sense. Like even though the devs benefited from the fact that they had movies to base it off of, you can easily imagine an RPG where a main character gets to travel Wonderland with Alice, fighting Greek monsters with Hercules, traveling though the Arabian Nights, etc. The more the series has continued it has inevitably become more corporate as they start to incorporate contemporary stuff like Marvel's Big Hero 6 and Toy Story, but the first couple of games were smart in selecting the worlds and characters they used cause in essence even though the pich of Kingdom Hearts was "Final Fantasy X Disney" in execution the ACTUAL PITCH is "Final Fantasy X Classic Fairy Tales" Granted the first two games did have contemporary selections as well but honestly Nightmare Before Christmas has become such a fucking staple of modern culture that I think it will stand the test of time and Pirates of The Caribbean less so but the setting does work at the very least as a generic Fantasy Pirate setting so its not that off putting.

The theme of the Final Fantasy esque narrative is about the duality of the heart, and how good people are drawn to bad influences that coexists with their desire to do something that matters, and they just use the Disney license to demonstrate the same themes with all the disney heroes being pure, and all the disney villains being drawn to darkness.And then they extrapolate that onto the main plot as it becomes about there being some version of "Darkness" in every game, that Sora has to purify by the end.

Then you play it, and every Disney world is just a vignette that starts and ends and largely acts as filler with some adjacent themes to the main adventure.And I also say this because I think the first game had the best crossover, when you see that all the Disney villains are banding together with Maleficent and joined in such a classically video-game "The Deadly Six" type of villains. And then Maleficent has a role across most of it, before Ansem takes her spotlight at the end.I think it's dumb that they didn't show Ansem throughout KH1 though.
