Do rhythm games take more skill than shmups?

99% of the time you just hit the buttons as they appear.
Shmups are significantly more memory-intensive because you actually need to come up with and use strategies.

>99% of the time you just hit the buttons as they appear.
Truth nuke. Whenever a family member or friends watch me play they always say "How do you memorize all that" and it always surprises them when I say that I dont, and just react to the notes.
>>
>>749633073
do you look like that irl
>>
>>749632186
yes if you are trying to do perfects, you dont even need sound but the highest dificultys require very fast fingers

shmups only need knowledge of the pixel of your ship to dodge the bullets
>>
>>749632186
the scoring leads to a higher level of execution at the highest level. on average though STGs are more difficult
so FCs are more difficult than 1ccs but just playing through games normally you can BS your way through rhythm games way easier
>>
>>749632186
Not everyone is born with rhythm, so yes.

Never got into shmups, but they seem difficult in more of a tedious way. Like moving one pixel at a time to dodge full screen attack patterns.
Rhythm games are physically demanding. On higher difficulties I just cannot register the input order and then move my hands to execute them fast enough. So yes I would consider them to require more skill because it goes beyond my ability as a human.

>/v/ is so mindbroken they're unironically going to argue a genre that's literally just pressing buttons at hardcoded times synchronized with a song is less memo-heavy than shmups
>>
>>749635406
you dont need sound to play (most) rhythm games tho, same with shmumps
but rhythm games require very fast finger movements compared to a shmump that only requires minimal movements
>>
>>749632186
It literally tells you which buttons to press. Just a really fast QTE.

if you took the time to play literally any rhythm game, you would quickly figure out literally no one is memorizing any of that shit
>>

you never tried to do a raw blink off of hara kiri rock
>>
>>749635406
they're not that different. They're both games where you memorise the fuck out of patterns to get good.
>>
>>749636452
FL and EZ players would beg to differ.

Depends on game, but most of BEMANI (specially Pop'n Music) falls under that category.
Shit's very hard for the average joe.

then that "rhythm" game is shit.
>>
>>749640401
i agree but how many rhythm games can you name that need sound and ones that dont
every one thats popular you just press buttons you dont need sound at all
>>
>>749639409
thats a niche of a niche
>>
>>749640401
you can play all rhythm games without sound, including rhythm heaven
>>
>>749640576
Actual retard. If you have any experience at all in rhythm games you would know the music plays an important role in timing your key presses.
>>
>>749640881
if its just button press and you need sound then you are the retard here
you do know pros can play those games without sound right
as said its just a memory game and you dont even need sound to learn timings
>>
>>749640401
His only "rhythm" game he ever played was Geometry Dash (not even a rhythm game) 10 years ago where he turned off the music and beat a level
>>
>>749640881
why are you pretending like people are incapable of just timing buttons on the judgment line by sight alone, do you actually play ANY rhythm games or are you just being retarded on purpose.
>>
>>749632186
probably the same because hard shmups are impossible for me to react to and hard rhythm games i cant mash fast enough

>you dont even need sound to learn timings
Yeah you dont play rhythm games. At a high level you dont even pay attention to each individual note. You chunk them in sections and music helps keeping you on that "flow"

>>749641292
I never said that. Of course you can hit them but your overall accuracy WILL be worse then if you had the music.
>do you actually play ANY rhythm games
pic rel is my gameplay
>>
>>749641660
ive played many and the ones i havent ive seen vids of they are all button presses
maybe you need sound to play them but other people can do it no problem without sound

at a high level unless you are playing blindfolded it has nothing to do with sound. im sure there are people who need it that way but im not gonna say all or even most need sound.

so thats your example of a rhythm game? does the layout of that change every time you play the same song? if not then that game aswell doesnt need sound either, everything there is timing if you get good enough( i doubt YOU can) you could do that without sound no problem
do you use a mouse or a touchpad for that? seems more like you need timing for your arm movements more then anything
>>
>>749641660
you realize FL is like a fringe scenario that the vast majority of rhythm game players do no engage with at all, this is an entirely different skill set specific to FL only that people just do not have to learn.
>>
>>749642112
You're not understanding the objective in rhythm games. The goal is to be as accurate as possible. This isnt a reaction sim aim trainer. You can click everything the moment it pops up. But to be accurate? You need to listen, follow the music, it gives clues as to whats coming next. Thats why some of the hardest maps in rhythm games have Polyrhythms, because they are hard to predict.
>>
>>749642362
sounds like more cope to be honest
>>
>>749642484
"predict"
what are you predicting if what you are doing is watching a screen?
just say you cant play them without sound and that you dont play known rhythm games, your playing a niche of a niche genre

>>749642583
not him but that type of rhythm game is not a known let alone popular type, and were mainly found only in asian arcades back in the day so majority of players dont play them or even know of them

>cope
what is the cope, FL by design requires more memorization as a skill, it is also a mod many people do not play, and rhythm games are not built around FL as a mod. you are just saying nothing
>>
>>749642785
My point is that when you cant see, or hear, since you tards think that you can perform accurately without music, what else are you going to rely on?
>>
>>749643014
the argument is whether or not you can play well without hearing the music, and you can because you can see and time the notes without the music. no one is bringing up no sight because even with music that is almost impossible unless you have memorized the entire chart. you don't see to memorize a chart to play without music, you can just accurately hit on the judgement line with your fucking eye balls.
>>
>>749643014
>cant see

what fucking rhythm games are you playing that you cant see other then doing a some gimmick cause you are some goober streamer

the point is you dont NEED sound for rhythm game since you can see everything on a screen for your timing.
i know the word rhythm is for sound and the games require music but you can absolutely play them muted no issue

>the argument is whether or not you can play well without hearing the music
Yeah? I never argued against the memorization aspect in rhythm games.
>you can just accurately hit on the judgement line with your fucking eye balls
Yes, but you be at a severe disadvantage and get shit acc.
>>
>>749643495
shit accuracy?

so a person cant eventually over multiple plays just learn the pattern and timing with a game muted? unless your are some fucking autist most people dont care aboot 100%a rhythm game whether they need the sound or not.

how aboot this, a deaf person cant play or even get good at rhythm games? if no then your are cooked
>>
>>749643861
You're arguing for memorization which I was never against in the first place ESL-kun.

Say I took your hypothetical deaf person and a normal person at the same skill level, and made them play 5 maps they have never played before. The normal person who can hear music would win every time.
>>
>>749644263
you don't need to memorize shit to play without music
>>
>>749644339
you will lose everytime
>>
>>749632186
is it worth buying the $200 drum controller?
or just get the official hori?
>>
>>749644263
based on what, if they both have eyes the deaf person has more focus on the screen which gives them an advantage
i hope you arent talking aboot anything else other then rhythm games. i can admit sound helps in an fps game but thats not what the thread is. you are arguing against memorization saying you NEED sound which you dont because thats all the game is aboot, timing which you dont NEED sound for.

>>749644391
>everytime

maybe you will, loser
>>

>>
>>749632674
>>749633073
You don't "memorize it" but you have to practice significantly especially to fc more complex sections.
Especially if you want to an fc with all perfect ratings there's an excessive amount of consistency demanded.

You two clearly have no experience with rhythm or music and it shows. Rhythm games are probably the highest tier of games in terms of amount of muscle memory training required.
>>
Yay, shmups!

As much as I love the gridseeker thing this game is quickly turning into a circle strafe jerk off. Almost tempted to copy Zero Gunner 2 for the shooting mechanics.
>>
>>749645506
the hori controller is abysmal dogshit
>>
>>749633073
the game in the image you posted is entirely based around memorizing patterns through time played over a long duration kek

except for scratch charts which... are also literal straight memorization

Is that namco daring sim by Andrew hussie playable anywhere?
>>
>>749632186
Taiko no Tatsujin is fake difficulty once you start getting towards 10 star tracks. The maps don't even match the song you're playing, you're just expected to hit random shit out of time with the music.

I'll be over here having fun with Iroha Step and Smile & Go.
>>
until you realize there're only two kinds of games, you'll continue having meaningless discussions about them
>games where you press buttons at the right time (aka action games)
>games where you don't have to press buttons at the right time (aka menu games)
ultimately there's no meaninful difference between the cognitive stimulation you get from Taiko no Tatsujin, Touhou, Call of Duty, Dark Souls, Forza, etc

Now what
