I won't lie combat is janky as fuck in BN1, but something about the game I actually really like compared to later entries is how open the exploration is. Nothing is stopping you from going to the deepest parts of the internet halfway through the game to bring back good chips if you're brave.

I'm replaying this for the first time in 20-something years at the moment and man it is not anywhere near as good as I remember. Random encounter rate is ridiculous. Combat feels awful because you need to grind a fuckload to even get matching letter chips. Scoring system based on ignoring as many combat mechanics as possible and just wiping the screen using an OP combo without moving. And the music is like a 3 second loop.

I loved those games. One of my most painful gaming memories was playing BN4 Red Sun. I was at the end of the game, and I didn't want the experience to end yet, and I was bored, so I started a new game just for fun. But out of muscle memory I saved, and lost my progress right before the end of the game. I was so upset I never played it again.
