WHAT THE FUCK WERE THEY THINKING
>>
>>749667950
that they were bringing Frank back but bigger and badder asser than ever
>>
>>749667950
The studio wanted to a spinoff similar to The Last of Us with a more linear story focused structure but the suits at Capcom demanded they instead make another sequel like the first game.
>>
>>749668154
No one wanted Dead Rising to be TLOU. Their death was deserved.
>>
>>749667950
Looking at DR4 I realized I was too harsh on DR3...DR3 was a solid debut title for the Xbox One.
>>
>>749668154
>Capcom demanded they make another sequel like the first game
Wrong
>>
>>749667950
I just beat 1 for the first time yesterday. I loved it. Great game.
>>
>>749672061
DR2 is also great in it's own way, love both of those goofy games.
>>
>>749672091
I might play it later, but I'll play something else first. Some people say 2 is inferior and playing right after that amazing ending could make me start comparing the whole time even if I don't want to... AND THAT WON'T BE ANY FUN AT ALLLLL
>>
>>749670447
DR3’s only real issue was they were afraid of making it difficult for the Cawwadoody brofaggots that Xbox was targeting at the time. It’s aesthetically a very nice, grindhouse splatterfilm action game.
>>
>>749672297
2 is inferior if you end up disliking Chuck as a character and/or can't connect with his motivations.
It can probably be pretty difficult going from Frank to Chuck immediately since they're very different characters
>>
>>749672597
>disliking Chuck as a character and/or can't connect with his motivations.
kek what
what the fuck are you saying
the writing of these games is basically porn writing, uncle
re read what you just wrote
>>
>>749672693
Why don't you relax and stop hyperventilating.
Chuck is deadpan, lacks a lot of the charm of Frank and instead has a stoic confidence that gives way to stupid ass one liners when he kills psychos.
If you don't vibe with the "muh daughter" plot or don't find her cute then a majority of the story sort of flops including the "true" ending. Without it, it's sort of half baked and pulling on a lot of the same conspiracy angles of the first game but in a pretty poor imitation.

I always thought Chuck has the perfect personality for a professional bike stuntman. Don't expect him to be all quirky and clever with his lines, he only feels alive when he's 50 meters in the air doing flips with a 100 kg bike.

Guess I'll just have to try it and see. I'm mostly here for the fun gameplay anyway. Although I loved the dialogue and characters in 1. They just overflow with SOVL.
>It can probably be pretty difficult going from Frank to Chuck immediately since they're very different characters
How so? I just noticed that going from level 35 Frank (I think that was my level at the end of the game) to a level 1 Chuck might hit me hard.
Yeah, I should probably wait a little before playing 2.
>>
>>749673707
I went straight to 2 after replaying 1. And yes, it has a learning curve because the engines are different also. The physics, combat, avoiding zombies are different too. But if you give it like 2 hours you can get used to it fairly quickly.

Capcom was expecting another mainline entry similar to the previous games from the start. Capcom Vancouver went behind their back and worked with Microsoft to make a TLOU knock off using the DR name. When it came to do a milestone check, they were shocked to find that they turned DR into a TLOU clone. Vancouver was being uppity lately too because they previously worked on an original IP instead of the Dead Rising sequel and diverting fundings to that project. When they pitched it to Capcom, they were not interested. Capcom was overly trusting of Vancouver and just let them do their thing unattended so shit like this and the Microsoft deal just slid by because they rarely checked on them.

It all came crumbling down when they hired a guy from EA as a Director. EA seems like a poison well. Insomniac never recovered after working with EA for one game.
>>
>>749674403

What the fuck are you talking about, it's nota TLOU clone at all
>>
>>749670447
>>749672426
I played Dead Rising 3 when I was 13 and I thought it was bad. The open-world didn't work well, the cars were kind of cool but ultimately only served the purpose of navigating the too-big game map. And Ash(?) was an awful protagonist compared to Frank and Chuck. Also, the game was too easy, from the bosses, the fact you could make combo weapons from items that were in the same category, whatever that means, and how you'd have to genuinely try to miss mission deadlines because of how much time you had to complete everything.
It's a shame because it was one of the reasons why I deciced to sacrifice 2 years' worth of Christmas and birthday gifts in order to facilitate the Day One release. The opening was kino, though, I will grant it that.

I bought the game day 1 back when it came out in 2006 and played every single one including the DRDR remake/remaster/whatever you wanna call it. For me it was the appeal of surviving zombie hordes in a mall which hit the Dawn of the Dead vibes. Everything else was secondary. The time limit sucked shit especially with 1 save slot. It was fun for like one run through but I wanna explore and take my time and not have to restart from scratch.

It both met their expectations and sold like shit. It just means their expectations were low.
https://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/business/million.html#tab6
According to Capcom's own Investor Relations page, used to appease current investors and try to attract new ones, DRDR sold less than a million copies, not enough to make the list when games like the PS2 version of DMC3 Special Edition do, at the very end.

>we were meant to get Legacy DLCs, one for each character: Frank, Chuck, Nick

I'll always state we were robbed of a Case West equivalent for 3 where Frank confronts Isabela once and for all. Instead he's missing entirely during the resolution of the Carlito's Orphans plot after being there for both Willamette and Fortune's End, and he's """brought back""" as a completely different character for the game that killed the franchise.
>>
>>749685602
It's not for immersion. It's an arcadey game where you're being asked to replay over and over until you get good and solve the game. It's less of an immersive experience and sandbox even though it does have those elements. You're looking for a completely different kind of game and unfortunately, as we can see with the popularity of things like gta, you're the majority.

2 feels off if played immediately after 1. The most immediate thing is how Chuck's movement feels more sluggish, like he wasn't made for navigating around zombies. His unlockable skills pale compared to Frank's too. The sense of eeriness present at points in 1 isn't really there outside of maybe a couple moments with the gas zombies. The map, although an improvement in verticality, relies too much on casinos imo and Royal Flush Plaza is just too big and linear as the area closest to the safehouse compared with Paradise Plaza which felt like the ultimate hub area for the kind of games DR are, with a myriad of always useful entrances and an ever evolving threat as the days go by. The shortcut helps, but I wonder how many people in a first playthrough will actually buy the sports car for example. And escorting survivors, well, they overcorrected so now it feels like you're running around with a small army of personal bodyguards instead of victims scared shitless of the rotting corpses surrounding them.

same guy, i think the part that strike my nerves worse is the endgame, the finally starts to become a real challenge with the gas zombies, i died more times playing dead rising 2 with those zombies than 1, you try to save your daughter from TK and the boss battle is "fun" but is not comparable to the whole escape from williamatte, the tank battle, and the death match over the tank. Also D2 doesnt have a Overtime mode like 1

They removed alot of shit from 1 to 2

Should've just let them release the tlou clone

>>749695536
mentioning chuck, it always kind of bothered me how much more serious chuck was than frank. he has a grim backstory, a dying daughter, a clint eastwood scowl at all times, and a way more stern view on everything. he has no levity at all and it makes the wacky tools and stupid outfits he puts on seem random and forced, it's hard to imagine this dude making these decisions himself
frank was way more relaxed and had significantly more levity in his interactions and story, he was just some cocky reporter after a scoop and all the wild shit he did in the game felt more like something he would actually do and explain if you asked him about it. for >>749695289 it's why 1 was so much more campy than 2, 1 was based around a protagonist who actually might do all the wacky shit he does, 2 was based on a guy who absolutely fucking would not unless forced by the player

I don't see Frank like a whimsical dude that would crossdress or fuck around with frisbees while looking for medicine for a bleeding out Brad at all. Dude is a war journalist, that's not just a meme line. It actually means something, he's covered battlefields and been in the thick of it before. If anything having an ego would mean the opposite of being someone willing to fuck around putting golbin masks on zombies for shits and giggles. Neither protagonist works for the wacky gameplay, that's what makes it work: early DR leaves the silliness entirely in the player's grasp, the story isn't written with it in mind. No character reacts to you dressing with a Servbot Mask. It's why something like Terror Is Reality is a million times wackier than anything in DR1, because a reality TV show where people kill zombies with chainsaw bikes and moose heads is now an intended part of the universe.
>>
>>749696853
yeah if you play 2 first you just accept it, but coming from 1 that wacky shit just feels retarded

I actually think Nick fits perfect in with how varied all the dead rising protagonists are.
Compared to both Chuck and Frank he's an actual young guy who is inexperienced and scared most of the game.
Frank was a whistleblower, Chuck was framed and had Katey. But Nick's motivation were only that he was immune. He didn't really have to be brave or capable. Having him be a bit of a goofy coward is a fun choice and I liked that.

Nick being a scaredy cat early on is such a breath of fresh air after 2, Case West and OtR back to back. By the end there both Frank and Chuck reach legit action hero status, having a reset with a young inexperienced dude that's never killed a guy in his life and who's greatest worry is getting into a cute punk girl's pants was a good call.

Terror Is Reality feels like one of those over the top ideas they started out with but later scrapped (same as pic rel). Also an
exaggerated continuation of the themes of "Le consumerism".
Terror is Reality worked as a good counterpart to CURE though and a bit sad we didn't get to see more of it.

At least TIR got the multiplayer component themed entirely around it, CURE stops being relevant a couple hours into the game once Stacey's intro is over and you've defeated Brandon the Psychopath. I liked the one line where Chuck reveals he attended one rally right after his wife died, probably to try and cope with her death. It was a very fast yet effective way to humanize him.

Why. After his character arc and change in 1 he only really works in a mentor role as someone that's already figured it out. It's why his only appearance post-1 that worked was Case West, and why both OtR and 4 had to reset his character back to being an asshole has-been that needs to learn to be better through the course of the game, be it with Rebecca in the former or Vick with the latter. Frank only worked when the Japanese wrote it, and once via lighting in a bottle when Vancouver got him sorta right in 2's epilogue. You bring a mid-50s Frank back, you're playing with fire for little to no gain after 3 resolved the plotline he would've and should've naturally been tied to.

The Canadians wasted most of the time and effort on making a The Last of Us clone with Microsoft's support.
Capcom rejected that idea completely because it was not Dead Rising.
Then the Canadians fucked around with several versions of Dead Rising 4, one of them being Assassin's Creed with zombies because they hired a director from Ubisoft.
Capcom rejected them because they were not Dead Rising.
Finally, with too much time and money down the drain they had to cobble together what they had and shat out Dead Rising 4. No timers, day&night cycle, or functioning survivor AI that could follow the player etc. was a casualty of them wasting so much time that they couldn't design a game around it even if they wanted to.
Capcom shut down the Canadian studio soon after.
I can't remember if the leaked footage of an older Chuck in South America was one of the earlier drafts of DR4 or DR5. The Canadians was also making an "edgy" reboot of Ghost and Goblins which got canned with the shutdown.

>What is the safest thing possible? Well, journalists and reviewers love TloU, Uncharted and things like that, they also sell a ton
>You already have a recognizable franchise to slap it on and a recognizable company name, so it's a safer bet than the average clone

5. crafting bombs is the main gimmick
6. takes place around the same time as Case Zero

>>
>>749709863
Capcom keeps bringing it up as a key IP in their investor stuff, and DRDR was made on the cheap as seen by it cribbing a whole bunch of shit from the first game in MT Frameworks and porting it to RE Engine

though that last bit makes me think a DRDR 2 is unlikely cause that one was built on Blue Castle's in-house engine and not MT Frameworks, so they wouldn't be able to pull the same trick twice
>>
>>749709863
>>749715009
If they actually expected it to underperform, it could have been just a way of training new employees to have them work on the next game

They have no need to touch Blue Castle code. They have their base game through DRDR. Everything else would just be modeling work that they would redo anyway and any texture pulls doesn't require the engine.

erotica being removed really was stupid.
It majorly affects Kent.
When Kent shows frank a photo of a zombie in an erotic shot, Frank is disgusted. Now that erotica is removed, he shows Frank his "funniest" photo which just destroys any notion that Kent is a psychopath and is a dark reflection of Frank
