Oh yeah the range is definitely quite limited. It's either neutralface.jpg, sadface or smile.
I'd encourage you to give it a try but it's hard without knowing what you like. The gameplay is pretty mediocre and repetitive but the story of the main characters is interesting enough and the soundtrack is surprisingly great.
Overall I'd give it around a 7/10, and I'm not even into magical girls or anything.
