>I loved what we did design-wise, the way the game didn't have loads, the way it felt like a 12-hour movie, some of the visual stuff we did with words on screen. I felt we were creating a really cool digital noir experience, and the consensus at the time was that people hated it.
>“So I got that completely wrong,” Houser admitted. “I know Sam Lake [creator of Max Payne] well, and he's a very good guy and really talented. I thought we'd done a good job of doing another Max Payne game. Some people liked it; lots didn't. So we got it wrong, or I got it wrong. I failed. My bit was not a success. The game is beautifully made, and it wasn't as successful as it should have been. So I would say a large amount of that failure was on me as one of the people making the decisions and also as the writer, when people really missed his writing.”

I like Max Payne 3 and think it's both a good game and a good conclusion to Max Payne's story.

The god-tier shooting couldn't save that pacing & writing, mogged 10 years later by just a few scenes from sam lake

i also liked it. the story is a little weak, but its still a good game.
>>
Story’s great, people are easily fooled by bandwagon talking points.

Sam Lake is a fucking hack and never managed to reach the heights of Max Payne games ever again
>>
>>749691625
Houser isnt as good of a writer and doesnt have the same creative vision as Sam Lake
>>
i never seen a single negative opinion besides >i hate brazil gib me more noire

>>749691625
That explains why they have Remedy doing the remakes

how about cutscenes every 3 minutes and long fucking loading screens

Max's dialogue in 3 feels like a bad imitation of his dialogue in the first two games, because that's exactly what it is

Max shart 3 is the proto snoi movie game. Taking your control away after gunning down half a dozen goons to force you to watch nauseating cutscenes. I don't consider the fans of this thing to be human beings. Finished the cemetery and then the game catapulted me back into ugly favelas so I've bailed out.
NY, the best part as far as I can tell, suffered from the same illness of pickering you with transitional cutscenes.
>>
I consider MP3 a masterpiece

Around this cold season i like to replay it
>>
>>749692607
He's literally a discount Kojima (who is also a hack but not to the same extent)
>>
Game was fun though.

Sorry I meant Max Payne 1, my fat finger slipped.
>>
>>749692360
I've seen a lot of praise for the gunplay in 3 but I've never seen much praise for the story, dialogue, atmosphere, pacing, level design or music which were all strengths of the Remedy games.
>>
>>749691625
I loved MP3 but there's something inherently anti-soul about taking over someone else's creative baby and trying to copy what they did
>>
>>749691625
I actually kind of respect him for being this honest. He's like "it wasn't what we expected. That's on us". And that's as honest as you can get. He's not gaslighting anyone into trying to think it was a misunderstood gem or whatever.

That said, the actual gameplay for MP3 is absolutely fantastic. A lot of the stuff around that is where it falls short. Like setting what is supposed to be a noir focused game in the sweaty slums of Mexico, or having Max shave his head (in a time when every other videogame main character was already shaving his head, to the point it was a boring cliche already). I don't think it's necessarily a bad game. But I never felt the need to ever play it again.
>>
>>749692651
make sure you don't play 1 or 2, otherwise you won't be able to enjoy your dogshit anymore
>>
>>749692862
>slums of Mexico
Fuck. It's Brazil, isn't it? My bad. Again, haven't played it pretty much since it came out.
>>
>>749692272
He's literally never made a bad game. Even Quantum Break which is by far their worst because of Microsoft's fingerprints being all over it is still a solid 7/10
>>
>>749691625
Yeah the writing was usual Rockstar nonsense and pretty shit americunt schizo babble

Nah they are all crap, feel like a chore to play, and are just a non-stop gamejourno wank. Max Payne demake will be worse than the OGs in every single way except for having the l33test gaytracing and fagworks effects.
>>
>Payne you useless piece o shit disgusting bald fuck go and now down a cartel all by yourself no sweat oh God woe me how am I an alcoholic with a killcount more than sperm
>Oh the master plan was to get a fall guy and we chose the most condecorated detective in another country, the berserker, killer of mobs, human machine gun, Max fucking Payne, surely a bulletproof plot
>>
It was too long for its own good. The enemies in the latter half become ridiculous. The finale in the airfield is just absurd shit compared to how grounded the story started out.

Yes, I'd consider it a fuck up too, but the game is not without merit. I'd rather replay 3 than 1, for instance.

this
>>
>>749691625
>it felt like a 12-hour movie,
Yeah that's why I hated it, Houser. Too many fucking cutscenes. MP 1 and 2 were better. Great gunplay though.
>>
Best controlling game Rockstar has ever made or will ever make. But it was kind of ass.
>>
>>749692049
This but unironically.
>>
>>749693710
Yeah idiotic story and a lot of story too
>>
Kind of dumb how they turned Max into the most generic of action heros for MP3. They were trying to make him Bruce Willis or something. And yes, Max Payne has always been about blowing away fools, but Max was never ever an action hero. And it totally flies in the face of what came before. Totally forgettable in a lot of ways
>>

Hack is the term that morons love to use against any author they don't like.
>>
yeah one thing that stands out comparing it to the remedy titles is dan's political hack nature worming it's way into the character. it feels like they took max's thoughtful, vaguely gentlemanly disposition(at least in comparison to the goomba maniacs he was fighting) and made it more explicitly political. max becomes an enemy of chauvinism and the fat cats.
>>
>>749691625
The game was fine and it still is the best shooting experience in a video game to this day. Story and setting in a video game is like in pornography, it's just there to make things happen.
>>
>Turning people into glue be cause (???)
>Fall guy plot because (???)
>Also went to America for Payne because they couldn't frame a Brazilian because (???)
>And they're all corrupt and the investigation office and all the power but had to frame it on the cartels because (???)
>But they're also the cartels
>But Payne keeps mowing them down at ridiculous efficiency and nobody says a thing because ludo narrative dissonance (term for stupid plot)
>>
Reposting my objectively correct post: Nah he's retarded. 1>3>2. 2 is a nearly abject failure. Bullet time is now right click to win every encounter, and you better turn it off if you want to avoid the stupid pirouette reload. Max's obsession with Mona Sax isn't believable at all and skates by on "he's a man she's a woman" alone. They have no chemistry, they don't even particularly like each other in 2 whereas in 1 they flirt a little bit.

2, with the Inner Circle tearing itself apart, Vlad's daddy issues, Woden's aging, was a different story and kind of game with Max Payne and Mona Sax shoved in there. It's just not a particularly good game. 3 is definitely better.

Truth nuke
Not even the gameplay is that great, just above the average visuals that should be the standard in others

Except Sam Lake consistently gets funding for Remedy. Not many small studios can say the same.
>>
>>749694483
I agree to a point, but presentation does matter. The game was visually too noisy, even if you strip away the story or whatever. It's noir, but it's an movie. It's trying to be deep, but you're blowing up half of Brazil. It never sticks to any one lane. It would be like having Doom take place in Disneyland. Sure, the shooting might still be there and fun, but it's not going to gel

Why would you post when you clearly don't like video games or care about them? No, Sam Lake is not a discount Kojima. He is an auteur in his own right, as shown by the consistent work since Max Payne 2. Kojima has also done amazing things with video games and isn't a hack at all for daring to do different things and have long cutscenes. Gene Wolfe is not a hack for doing sequels to Book of the New Sun. Lovecraft is not a hack for not explaining xyz in his books. Grow a fucking brain you moron.

Max Payne 3 is miles better than anything Remedy has shit out in the past 23 years.
