I still find it funny how that's one of the last things you'll read, since it's like the final chapter in book 5.

>>
>>749722001
most games have bad writing, yes, but those books aren't much better. i don't play games for story. and i barely read fantasy slop because there is no real point to it, most of these fantasy epics are the male equivalent to the bestial, sadomasochistic romance novels marketed at women, except instead of werewolves dicking down helpless maidens, it is big burly men beheading other men with fake and gay "politics" to "justify" the violence.

Kingkiller Chronicle though I think if both got an ending, Martin would be able to drive it home better than Rothfuss. I wasn't put off as much by the faerie sexcapades in the second book as most people since I think it will be very fucking relevant when we find out more about Bast.

Rothfus frustrates me way more than Martin. With Ice and Fire I can at least see the through line and extrapolate the path to the ending. But Doors of Stone can't possibly deliver on all that was promised in one final book.

Started reading this for the first time in the last few months without ever watching the show. I feel like it really falls off after the third book. Also it pissed me off that most of the action in the first and second book was from tyrion's perspective. I refuse to belief a dwarf with tiny ass arms can hit anybody on horseback with an axe, ask any mount and blade player. It really makes him feel like a Gary stu and grrm's self insert. I can believe the fantastic but not the improbable. I liked The Second Apocalypse a lot better despite the dialogue not being as good and the series having an absolutely bummer ending.
>>
>>749722001
thats why elden ring is the greatest rpg ever made, perhaps the greatest game period
>>
>>749728889
>>749728967
He can't finish the books because the characters' stories need to meet a certain resolution in order for the message he wants to send to get across, but he's a "gardener" and just let the characters write themselves, which is part of the reason people like them so much: they feel real. But now he has to wrangle them back on course, which goes against his writing style.

It's like he needs to bring his dog to the vet but he doesn't believe in forcing her to go places so he just let her loose and hoped she'd end up there on her own. Now he has no more "time" since he wants seven books total. He needs to find a way to let the characters be free but ALSO stumble into their planned endings, and that's just wishful thinking. Books 4 and 5 were supposed to be about Dany's invasion, but 5 ends with her in the Dothraki Sea of all places.
>>
I prefer fantasy that doesn't hate the fact that it's fantasy. And is finished.
>>
>>749730939
Would you believe it was originally pitched as a trilogy and just kept blooming out further and further from there?

>>749731038
Yeah, it's obvious some of the plot has gotten away from him. I think he has character arcs in mind for each character he writes but the timelines for them don't quite matchup and he has a lot of trouble integrating them back in with the overarching kingdom politics so he has to keep everyone spread all over the world barely interacting together. As things condense again moving towards the finale his character plots start suffering.

The NK doesn't really exist in the books and the Others aren't evil. One of GRRM's gripes with LotR is that the orcs are innately evil. He wouldn't do that to the Others. He even called them "the others" to foreshadow that they're just foreigners and should be treated like people. Maybe their leader is an evil warlord and he needs to be killed to free his people, but the series is definitely ending with the message that humans and the Others are equals and war is bad.

Jaime was also originally intended to be the Big Bad of the War of the Five Kings, but his current arc is about him becoming a diplomat instead of a king slayer. Kinda' weird for his arc to end with him killing a king.

It's bait. They're all good novels for a number of reasons but people endlessly dig way more meta-textual meaning out of than exists within the books themselves. It's a consistent midwit pitfall to find something for the first time that brushes against deeper themes and philosophical concepts and pronounce this a profound revelatory work because it was the source of their personal first revelation.

the others are looking for a stark with a valyrian sword. what their intent is is anyone's guess
>prologue book 1 has the others ambush waymar royce
>one duels him honorably until his sword cracks and then it says "something mocking" and all of them descend on him and stab him to death
>they clearly only care about royce, as they leave one survivor and the other guy is killed by royce's risen corpse
>book 2 sees jon and co at crastor's, where he instantly recognizes jon as having the stark look (grey eyes, dark hair) and takes an interest in him
>he also reveals waymar, gared and will stopped in at crastor's before riding north into the ambush
>we later learn crastor is in contact with the others via offering them his sons
>book 5, sansa is at the eyrie and remembers waymar stopping in at winterfell on his way to the wall
>she thought he was hot and would have let him hit it because of his "grey eyes and dark hair"
putting it all together
>waymar and co stop at crastor's then continue north
>crastor tells the others that a ranger with the stark look and a nice sword is north of the wall
>the others bait royce into a trap
>one of them duels him, his sword shatters and they realize he is not the one they are looking for
>they unceremoniously kill him and move on
later, possibly incidental but likely related:
>mormont tells crastor they are making for the fist of the first men, and they are soon overrun by a massive force of wights
>jon is already gone by then, having volunteered with the half-hand

Telltale had one for Game of Thrones. I thought it started okay, but it fell apart pretty quickly trying to balance a big rotating cast and ended on a cliffhanger. Plus it felt like they had to have a quota of characters from the show in there for fanservice, which actively hurt the story because you knew that you were completely powerless against canon characters like Ramsey who just showed up to randomly fuck with you.

I don't know of any Stormlight Archive game

Fat man's graphomania had a telltale game which ended on sequelbaiting which went nowhere since studio got canned. Game ends roughly in the middle of season 4 of the show.

Also it had a DA:O-like arpuger which is ugly as sin but has an actually interesting plot

Please enlighten me on how its dumb anon. I get its a fantasy book but a person with dwarfism killing people in head on melee combat really takes me out of it. A grown man swinging an axe on horseback already has short reach, let alone somebody with dwarfism. Like I can suspend my disbelief for a LOTR dwarf but not for an actual midget lmao.

Because fantasy writers are the perfect match for their audience, both are complete illiterate in every field with the only exception of Tolkien, and since the rest are just poor copies of him without any idea behind their stories they write "worldbuilding" instead of metaphysics and theology therefore they replicate the same modern mentality of today but in renaissance theme park with dungeons and dragons cartoons, magic turned into technology instead of mystery and gods into superpowered aliens closer to Marvel and DC comics characters than real numinous entities.

Like in how many the characters say stuff like the concept of "Sin" and "Redemption" when there is Rabbi Yeshua in these world?

See the problem is that apes read it as some fantasy novel being completely unaware of the amount of metatextual games, like the Witch King being Macbeth because Tolkien didn't like how Shakespeare resolved the story. Or Aragorn doing a clear Katabasis to be reborn as king of Men and Gondor.

I didn't hate it, but it can be very slow and repetitive in terms of actually moving the plot forward. It sounds kind of childish to say but the best part was all the effort put into the magic and weaponry. Like I think a lot more effort was put into the neat magic system and premise of a violent social climb in the name of cool swords than I think was put into the actual characters dynamics and politics.

It bugs me because this would have been better if they just based it on the books and had it be about a clash between minor houses in the midsts of a larger conflict. Also Roderick, Asher, and Garret were based, I hope the latter got himself some wildling pussy like Jon. Oh and fuck Gryff and Ludd.

I had to put the series on hold after Last Argument of Kings, because everything was just kind of shit, but all of the characters made completely reasonable choices given everything that they'd done and that was really the first time I was in any sort of agreement with what other people said of calling The First Law "grimdark". No, he said he won't do it and has made no notes or plans so even if someone was willing to try they would be unable. If he really did care about his world, or his fans or he would Robert Jordan it, but he doesn't so he didn't. He will die, it will be tragically unfinished and that will be his legacy and I'm sure he prefers it that way since it will make it more memorable and timeless than giving everyone the closure they want.

Isn't wheel of time that series with 20 books of meta irony that no one takes seriously?
>>
Hail Mary, Fourth Wing, Court Of, Dirty Job, Antimemetics Division, Snow Crash, Good Omens, Hitchiker's Guide, Neuromancer, Blindsight, House Of Leaves, and New Sun aren't YA at all. They're novels written by adults, for adults. If your definition of books for adults are archaic, unreadable grandma literature like Little Women or backwater snuffshit for rednecks like Blood Meridian, your emotional maturity is completely off and you need to seek some form of counsel. There is never any reason to come down on an adult for reading PG-rated novels like Harry Potter.

You're tempting fate by asking this question, because the kind of person who will antagonize you for reading colorful novels that appeal to people who draw and read comics is always going to respond to questions about book maturity with some insane, incredibly creepy and out-of-left-field novel like Behead All Satans, or they're going to start lecturing you on philosophy as a segway to try to get you into a copy of The Communist Manifesto or something equally anti-authority that has no value to an author. And then they're going to scream at you for not being receptive to them and try to make you think *you're* crazy for not understanding how meaningful their crap is, and try to make you feel like a dork for not immediately understanding their implied deep-underground epic taste curated for them by a thousand art students. From the perspective of others, it doesn't really matter which is which. I work in a factory full of <90 IQ rubes and the amount of time that gets wasted due to how inconsiderate everyone is honestly astounds me to no end. Basic gestures I was taught as a child, like putting things back where you found them and asking for help if you don't know what you're doing, are no only foreign to them, they mockingly reject them. I eventually learned to stop helping them since I was just enabling their bad habits. Just to cut out the faffery, I want everyone in this thread to reply to this post with the novel they're currently reading, right now.

I'm reading Snuff, from the Discworld series. I have permanent newness bias because I'm still under 30, so I've been hopping around the Discworld pretty idiosyncratically to try to settle on the best-selling, best-received books that are the most relevant to my art project, and the City Watch series is the one that's most written for adults. Captain Vimes the workaholic gets a mandated vacation that puts him into a fancy house in the countryside outside of Ankh-Morpork where all the help act super-weird around him and he has to deal with local craziness while watching over his son and unwinding the mystery of why it's all happening. Discworld novels always have that special touch of humor that really make you want to keep chewing at them.

He doesn't do that? I've seen the statement he made about his themes being a subversion on some Lord of the Rings concepts like the idea that maybe a good warrior wouldn't automatically make for a good king, but people act like Martin shits on Tolkien every chance he gets when he clearly respects the work he did.

>you should probably graduate towards books oriented towards adult people
People say this but then they conflate "mature" with "realistic, slow, edgy."
>Pfft, you read books about wizards and pure maidens? Try reading something for adults, like this book about a bald old fart who fucks women to death.
>lmao you like superheroes? Try reading something intelligent for once, like this comic about a married couple going through divorce. I especially liked the scene where he goes fishing and contemplates his childhood.
Yeah, riveting.

I read The Old Man and the Sea and it was fucking boring and by the third time he said, "I wish I brought the boy," I actually laughed out loud. And I don't think that was the intention.

Moby Dick is good for like 20 chapters then turns into a boring, meaningless slog until the whale actually shows up and suddenly it's Wrestlemania and everyone dies. I've read analyses of it to see if maybe I missed something and literally everyone confidently asserts it's about this or that, but none of them agree with each other.

Don Quixote caused me physical pain to read. It has a few funny moments, but most of the first book is low brow comedy and most of the second book is just hateful. I was told it's meant to be a satire of old Spanish romance novels. Okay. How many of those do you think I've read? Are you well-versed in 16th century Spanish romance novels? A Confederacy of Dunces is the same.

I finished King in Yellow and Heart of Darkness like an anime girl with a question mark above my head. I didn't dislike them, but I didn't know what the authors were trying to say either. I think King in Yellow was interesting, maybe it'd be fun to pick it apart and try to figure it out, but Heart of Darkness made me think the message was probably something along the lines of "muh environment" so I really do not want to pry any further lest I throw up on my keyboard.

1984, Animal Farm, Lolita and The Metamorphosis were good.

I love ASOIAF too but I'd be lying if I didn't mention that half my interest came from watching theory channels/blogs. I also watched the TV show and most of the dialogue people love from it is original to the show. When you strip that stuff away, maybe I'd like the books less. But it's been a long time, so I dunno.

Discworld is kinda' funny and whimsical but I found it hard to read more than six books. It reminded me too much of talking to British teenage girls on the Internet back in the day, with how punny and self-satisfied the characters act.

Flowers For Algernon would have been my nightmare book when I was a kid. I did and still hate IQ reduction and mental retardation stuff SO much, and a book where a mentally handicapped man gets an experimental procedure to make him not stupid only for it to turn out to be faulty and for his IQ to degrade back into the toilet over the rest of the book is the most horrifying thing I could conceive of at that age, but that was then.

Learning about this book as an adult, it's fucking laughable. The guy's IQ goes up to ONE-HUNDRED-AND-SEVENTY (which is a COMPLETELY arbitrary number, by the way, given that the highest recorded, living IQ in human history is greater than 220 and that guy can't even speak English) and then slowly goes back down so he's retarded again? After becoming a genius with the entire battle pass and two expansion packs? I mean, all I did was read a plot summary, so maybe the person who wrote it was a tub of crap and the book actually does detail him becoming a vegetable after the experiment starts failing, but from what I understand, he just becomes...disabled again? WHAT?

It's a paradox or catch-22 where you're forced to deal with an ocean of morons to get to us, but you can't find us anywhere else on the planet, so we kind of just have to make do and congregate in places like these until we naturally terraform society and create a new, more optimistic world order.

Every incels has 100% had an opportunity in their life to fuck a woman that they themselves fucked up.
The most common one was ignoring signs from women who wanted to fuck them because they were mid-fantasy about some broad who didn't.
That's part of what makes them so pitiful a human they are in prisons of their own creation.

I'm curious what you feel isn't really meshing with you. For me it's always the game elements that take me out a little bit. Talking about the interface, or a hot bar, all of this stuff that just doesn't make a whole lot of sense, especially given the reality show nature of the whole thing. Since it comes up so much it can get annoying, but like I said I liked all of the sort of background plot going on that I think the overall world is interesting enough to stick with it.

I kind of agree with you on Feral Gods and Masquerade though. The first three books feel very much like "Updated with new chapters every week" kind of writing (and the number of like two or three page chapters really brings that thought home) But with the fourth book on they really feel like okay, they're fully writing a book at this point.

I think Gate of the Feral Gods I think is where we see a bunch of characters really coming into their own and the things they're best at really shining. Carls planning is really good. Donuts antics, Katia getting more assertive was real nice to see. Masquerade continues some of this stuff, but a lot of it is more off screen, especially with Katia's stuff, and well continuing a characters good trajectory is always less interesting than seeing them change course. I just feel like in Masquerade like, too much went wrong. Sure Carl achieved his goals, but it almost feels more like happenstance, rather than like in Gate of the Feral Gods where it was much more of Carl outsmarting the system.

the problem with that has ALWAYS been logistics anon. getting the food where it has to go before it spoils.
plus, frankly, i dont give a shit about 'starving brown countries' and im not afraid to say so. when somewhere in europe, the baltics or russia (slavics may be the lowest tier of whites but theyre still whites), then ill care

if you think an internet spaghetti dropping incel has the connections to score dope then you are fundamentally not understanding what an incel are.
incels dont have friends. they dont have connections to get drugs through. they usually dont even have jobs to get money to buy the drugs with. or buy hookers with.
you are just wrong my guy

>Every incels has 100% had an opportunity in their life to fuck a woman that they themselves fucked up.
You're one retarded motherfucker.

Well it allows you to stay out of other people’s issues and take everything over after they fight each other to the death. Yeah, that’s why America is what it is.

Just go to your local Republican club meetings, that worked for me.

>Book thread on /v/ devolves into sub-English shitflinging competition between people who can't read

It's honestly been how the stories of each book have been told and specifically in how they aren't their own story.

The 1st was absolutely the worst case of this because it sets up a pair of "real" villains that seem tailor made to be the first payoff and yet it weirdly ends with them beating a floor boss and then a pet sidequest.
It actively doesn't payoff what it sets up and make itself a story. The book just ends with Smaug flying off to destroy Burrowtown.

Gates has been the best because Carl's assassination is his first step towards his actual goal and places him in a scenario that actually feels threatening for once.
I just enjoyed the build up to the heist in Masquerade and every part of it playing out until I noticed I have like twenty pages left and the shit hadn't hit the fan yet and then it was just sorta wrapped up really really quickly.
Down to all the players in the ballroom there is a great tension in the three way standoff taking place and then it just sorta ended.

There is definately some "meta" elements to it but nothing like, or to the extent of, House of Leaves. I think Mark is just a turboautist about typography and ergodic literature, it's part of the charm of his stuff to me

Today I learned I fundamentally don't understand what an incel is.
I know a lot of really unfuckable guys with shit looks/personalities and mental issues that make them unable to sustain a conversation with women.
Apparently I don't know what the bottom actually is.

was waiting for the chink shill to arive

>there are a lot of incels who are disgusting and utterly repulsive to women and always have been. such people have NEVER had an 'opportunity' to fuck that they just messed up
That's not even the whole thing, this retard simply cannot comprehend that the entire world doesn't work exactly the way that his personal experiences did.
Considering the next post he probably grew up in some shithole.

The idea that there are men out there that haven't even been in a position to atleast bribe/coerce themselves into pussy is baffling and goes back to me thinking.

>Every internet incel is upset that they can't get THE woman to suck their dick, not that they actually can't get it sucked.

Not that apparently their are legions of crippled men who don't talk to other humans and who haven't even seen a woman in a bad situation that they could've taken advantage of.

I agree mate. In the words of Dave Wolverton
A story that fascinates is better than one that bores.
A story that is eloquent is better than the baboon howlings of the verbally damned.
A story that is profound, that transmits valuable insight, is better than one that is pedestrian or that is opaque.
A story that speaks to many is better than one that speaks to few.
A story that is beautiful in form is better than one that is inelegant, rambling or clumsy.
A story that transports me to another world or that transmits experience is better than a story that leaves me sitting alone and troubled in my reading chair.
A story that artfully moves me emotionally or intellectually is better than one that leaves me emotionally or intellectually anesthetized.

>A story that speaks to many is better than one that speaks to few.
Is an awful sentiment for a writer to express. Writing specifically is the best medium for the niche, the obscure and the truly weird because it is really really really cheap compared to any other mass media.
Writing is the expression meant to speak to the few and if it is of good enough quality to reaches the many.

What do you want me to do? Do you want me to give you a breakdown of the entire history of the west colonizing and developing the new world? How about slavery and industrialization? How about the CIA being created with the intention of being temporary only for it to become the octopus it is today? My point was simply that none of what America has done would have been possible if it were smaller, had worse farmland, and was less geographically secure. Geography is a key aspect as to why America is as successful as it is. It’s not a footnote. You’re the epitome of the average internet loser that thinks someone saying they like fried eggs immediately means they hate them scrambled. Many things built America. Geography is one of those things, and it is your simple mind that can’t comprehend discussing one aspect of a topic without constantly making deference to the rest of western history. It implies you might be illiterate.
