Hello console nigger.
PC Chads stopped giving a fuck about le physical after the average internet speed got good enough to download games from the net.
PC physical was also raped with increasingly malware-tier copy protection.
You cling to physical because you never knew the comforts of piracy and never got hit with cancer like SecuROM.

Everyone always goes on about how much better Steamworks DRM is than previous solutions like SecoROM but it's only trivial to crack because Valve are the laziest and most incompetant niggers around who can only sell other people's games, make sequels to mods, or sell gambling to underage kids. Valve are an objectivley terrible software developer and the only reason steamworks DRM still works on modern OSes is because they want to keep you in their ecosystem.
>but look at all they've done for Linux gaming!
Wait until these retards look at the history of android and Google. Locking you into any DRMed ecosystem is not good and if you think otherwise you're a fucking moron.

Physical media for PC was doomed either way, the only question was that who’s going to dominate the digital market.

>>749792753
I never understood consolefags not getting a PC for the relatively higher price they have to pay (without the price increase caused by AI, it would be moreless equivalent to modern consoles) and then they are happy to waste all those money on the console internet subscription.

The games also generally seem to cost more even when looking at sales of the same game.
>>

Convenience. PCs have the opinion of being complicated: you have to build one with the right parts, install drivers, deal with compatibility issues... Consoles and mobile phones are easy.

>vegans once again are proud to announce how completely ignorant they are of how a console works
Considering they are so simple, "any retard can use one" you morons really don't have a fucking clue
>>
>>749792636
You were still downloading the game onto your own PC which you had full control over. If Steam said you couldn't play your game, then you still had the files and could play the game with a trivial crack if the game had DRM at all.
The problem with abandoning physical media on consoles is that you don't own the hardware that was sold to you and the console can be programmed in such a way that you can't exercise your legal rights over the things you bought.
>>749792884
There is a world of difference between shitdroid and Steamworks. Android is an entire OS built around lock-in and advertisement, Steamworks is just some APIs.
Steamworks DRM functionality really just exists so that companies don't feel like they need to get creative with their DRM or fall for scams like Securom that only decrease sales, because piracy itself doesn't actually harm sales figures.

i pay more to get better performance, so it's more expensive
if i was satisfied with a shitbox, like you, i could get one for $600 too
>>
So im like a disc enjoyer or whatever I like discs and ill pay more for a nice edition.

But I just dont believe people who say they are satisfied with the "gold master(they love that word)" on a disc. I guarantee you everybody connects for the day 1 patch.

And in the event that your console cannot connect anymore because the servers are shut down (which hasnt happened for PS3/360 yet, just the stores) I would assume most normal people would find a way to play an updated version via unofficial means and not just be satisfied with the disc build to BTFO the digicucks told ya so or whatever.
>>
>>749793404
What a sad post. Consoles have always been sold only to tech illiterate retards too stupid for anything more complex and willing to paid for a highly limited, but very accessible experience.
>>
>>749792636
That's because on PC you have control of the files on your computer. It must be wild for a consolefag to imagine such a thing, but for PC games there's no difference between having the files on a plastic disc and having the files on your computer's internal storage.
>>

>>
>>749792636
Physical pc games were already kinda on their way out even prior to steam being totally dominant.
>>
>>749792725
It's also worth mentioning that PC never really ran games from discs to begin with. In most cases, the disc was just a medium to copy the files onto your hard drive.
After installation, the disc was useless except as a form of annoying DRM in some cases, which was easily bypassed by a nocd crack. People would regularly download cracks for games they owned just to avoid the hassle of swapping discs.

Securom / Safedisk / Starforce cancer is also notable for the fact that even if you own a physical copy of such game, you probably can’t play it in 2026 without resorting to no-CD cracks. In fact, you probably don’t want to install anything containing Starforce on your PC, shit’s literal malware.

Purely for ownership purposes, DRM-free GOG installers are the ultimate product, you can backup them in any way you ever want with no limits.

You can get a very good GPU for the price of a console.

So like 3 years of PS+ but you could get some games instead
>>
Because steam offered a better experience thn physical, simple as that, and I know you're 12 now, but I lived through the end times of pc physical media and it was basically the same shit as steam, having to always link the game key to an online account, having zero resale value and a lot of games had an up to three activations in total until the key expired and the disc was useless.
>>
>>749793886

You're saying this about the biggest digital distributor on the market, especially right after they recently and publicly bodied EGS yet again with a quiet update that increased load speed before EGS even got around to bragging about vibe coding theirs to be faster. No, Steam's DRM isn't trivial to get past because they're lazy, it's trivial to get past because they're genuinely customer focused, not dev focused. DRM whose only purpose is to fuck over customers is not a priority to them, there's third party software for that.

You're far less cynical than I am then. I just assume it's jannies and comparable trying to force "us vs them" narratives to keep engagement up, we saw in the hacks from 2023 that jannies would have long discussions in how to bait replies when the traffic was diving hard.

>>749793772
You sir have noted the reality of what happen. It's why so much DRM of the 90s and early 90s with PC gaming was tied things that came with the box such as "go to page 55 and write the ninth word of the third paragraph" because the games didn't run on the floppies and/or CDs. Physical media for PC game for it's near entirety was having a digital game on the hard drive and why game systems usually advertised "plug and play" as a feature because the games just ran off the cart/disc. The reason now that console systems are trying to get away from physical media is a mix of both internet being far more common and hard drives being the norm for everything now. If these techs were as available and common place in the late 80s we already be living in a digital only dystopia.

In the earlier days they did use the CD for music too, like in addition to the game installer it also contained actual CD audio that the game would play. Back then high-quality audio used too much space so it was played directly from the disc. This was probably more efficient too, since optical drives had direct audio outputs so the drive could even handle all playback independently with no load on the CPU.

I think some early FMV games also played their videos from disc directly, for the same file size issue.

The people posting these threads also never had to deal with the era when every fucking publisher had their own launcher and you could only play their games on it. Origin, Uplay, GFWL, RGL, battlenet, etc all made it so you had to download a program, make an account, keep it updated, open it every time you wanted to play that game and they all inevitably caved to steam anyway. Wrong zoomie. When Valve forced steam instead of WON people gave a fuck. It was horrible.
When Valve forced steam for Half-Life 2 people gave a fuck. I personally remember being pissed with HL2 setup, since I didn't have Internet in my room, so I had to carry my PC down to the living room even though I had the DVD and you couldn't easily play it without a connection.

But then internet got faster, steam got better. Sales were bigger and overall steam just offered many good things that I liked.

I don't like what steam stand for in spirit, but Gabe was right about the service thing. It's just good, so people don't mind not having physical media for PC games anymore.

Also: if Steam ever goes down. I could easily pirate what I need, since my system is not locked down. And with Gaben pushing gaming on Linux Steam actually works in my favor.

>how much was your hard drive?
I use an SSD since I'm not living in the middle ages. I also use multiple since I'm not a plebian. Anyway, all of them were maybe 3/400 total.
>how much was your ram
Like 50 bucks. RAM is, well was, cheap as dirt.
>how much was your GPU?
Around 600.
>how much was your monitor?
Maybe 1 or 2 hundred.
Maybe a grand total. The rest of my PC is probably an extra 7-800. Looking at your online sub prices, it's almost a hundred per year for the lowest tier. And that price has been creeping up and will keep doing so. A bit over a decade to match my PC, and that's without counting the more expensive games or the fact that your hardware costs money too. How much did you pay for your TV? If it's even remotely new and not the lowest tier possible, probably almost as much as my whole PC.

Yeah to be quite honest PC was raped from the get-go with laughable anti "piracy" measures on physical games that just hurt the consumer more than anything. I still buy physical PC copies of games as collectibles whenever I find them (and have my old copies of stuff like half life and its expansions/ halo 1/RUNE/DOOM 3 etc etc laying around) but my machine hasn't even had a disc drive in a decade soon. Steam didn't "kill" shit, it just provides better service than anything else on PC ever did, which is also the complete opposite of the rape DRM nightmare that the goysole digital stores are on multiple levels
>>

If it wasn't for steam it would have been somebody else, probably a lot worse. Imagine Denuvo, but it comes with every games.
>>
>>749792725
PC physical was also heavily crippled by not being stocked anywhere.
Like, console games would be stocked in places like walmart and easy to get. PC games you had to go to a specialty game shop (often 1/10th of the shelf space was for PC games) or a PC store that'd have like one or two rows of shelves for it.
PC physical was fucking cucked out of the market by console games. Lets not pretend that getting PC games was easy.

But what killed physical PC game media was companies just putting steam codes in the box and not discs. At that point just buy a steam card.

Look into their anti-cheat. It is the same philosophy. Valve is not ideal, but they are a lot less intrusive than everyone else.
>>
>>749798301
I think nobody bothered until now because there was no point, if you wanted a PS5 that could play anything you could just build yourself a PC after all.
But now the point was to spite Sony, so the project gained immense traction.

That shit was killed by madatory CD keys that need internet to authenticate you to play that CD game. It was really no different than downloading the game off a Steam since that automatically authenticated you and your game.

Console disk on the other hand does not need any online authentication bullshit. Just have the game and play. No online needed.

>It must be wild for a consolefag to imagine such a thing
Fucking zoomer.
The files to play the game weren't playable from the disc on PC, the disc is just an install file that required unpacking to use. It installs the game onto hard drive to play it.
Console games pre-xbox didn't use install files, they just ran directly from the cart/disc. AKA they were pre-installed onto the medium and not a method of installing onto your consoles hard drive (as consoles before the xbox didn't even have a hard drive)

Modern consoles are no different to the PC in that the discs just have install files that install on the (tiny) hard drive it has.
>>
>>749792725
fpbp consoleniggers are a cattle. Those cds and dvds were completely pointless i have shitload of them to the left and right of me and guess what i'm never using them as i can download old games in a few minutes from internet with patches

You.......you do know that you could always choose WHERE the game was installed, right? And you can still copy and move the installed files around at your whim because they're on your hard drive and you can access them at all times. This is basic ass stuff, man. Even Win98 and XP could do this
>>
>>749798195
I think he's correctly implying that console DRM, unlike PC DRM, is somewhat hidden from the user unless the user is operating their device incorrectly - eg jailbreaking, trying to make homebrew software, etc. Buying physical on PC back when it was still available was completely asinine because the pirated version was way better and you needed a crack for a physical version anyway. At that point why are you wasting time and money getting the physical media when you can DL the equivalent product from the Internet for free?
It's a pretty easy decision.
>>
>>749799078
while you're at it. Half-Life, the first one, is also superior to the tf2. so is the original UT. So are Quake III Arena and CS 1.6. In other words, that anon was correct. Anything is better than tf2.

Also copying and moving those files around doesn't really do anything because the installation often modifies the registry.
This is basic knowledge nigger.
>>
>>749799082
>He never had an xbox
You could make folders and move installed games around on the hard drive. You also could copy music CD's to the hard drive.
Of course, a zoomer like you wouldn't know this.

I can make my own Physical media on PC.
And internet makes sure any game no matter how old will always be easy to find download and play.
Even console games. And any an all games i own be it on Disc or Steam will work on my Future PCs.
Meanwhile once your old console dies or gets its servers shut down or your disc gets scratched your game is lost forever.
>>
>>749799915
>>749799959
>seething consoletard
Refer to this:
>That's because on PC you have control of the files on your computer
You're conceding to this argument while making some excuses about the "registry" or something because you read about it somewhere and that scared you. In practice, these registries did absolutely nothing. Certainly didnt stop your transferred files from working but then again, you wouldnt know about that.
On another note, the xbox line is an adorable cope. Go ahead, tell the class why you'd ever buy the RROD machine to begin with
>>
>>749792636
sony was one of the main companies behind to kill pc physical with securom and now they're shitting up pc gaming in general with Denuvo
funny how for decades it's been one company continually trying to make sure you don't own anything, and it's starting to affect sonygroids directly
>>
>>749792636
god you are such a retarded faggot.
look, steam didn't kill anything, they won out of convenience. the publishers/developers themselves killed physical because they could make a better profit without having to ship cd's.

further, steam is filling a niche THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN FILLED NO MATTER WHAT. I hope you understand, but because you are a retarded, hopeless retarded fuckign cunt zoomer. i'll repeat.
someone.

The internet killed physical media nothing more. The people and companies around at the time do not matter. On another planet in another galaxy that invented the internet it too killed all physical media.

Internet = death of physical media it is inevitable.
