I guess part of the reason is that it always annoyed me how blatantly biased Ash was towards him. He would never get mad at him. He would put his life on line for chu in a way he wouldn't for his other pokemon. (Remember an episode where he junped to save pikachu from falling off the ledge, but when the same thing happened to squirtle (I think?) he just left squirtle to handle it by himself)
