Where were you when Sonic Adventure dropped in the late 90s? Was your mind blown?

WHERE IS SONIC ADVENTURE 3

This game actually came out a few months before I was born, so I do feel a little weird playing it, but it's such a wonderful game that I just can't resist it. This is the real start of the Sonic series, in my opinion. The new art and everything else about the game is top-tier. If the 1999 console market had access to the version we have now with restorative art direction, unlimited resolution, an uncapped framerate and fifty million other QoL mods, it would have smacked Mario 64 and spared Sonic from years of Republican sabotage.

I might have posted this story before.
>be 3 years old
>walking around a mall with parents
>we walk by a game store that had a TV displaying the Sonic Adventure title screen
>I couldn't even read yet but I still knew it said "Sonic" because I was obsessed with the games
>beg my parents if we can go in and see
>they say when we leave we can go back and see it
>they lied

>Where were you when Sonic Adventure dropped in the late 90s?
I had preordered a Dreamcast. So in line at Funcoland I guess.
>Was your mind blown?
Not blown. But I was very excited to finally get a 3D Sonic game after getting cucked out of one on the Saturn.

I was absolutely enthralled with SA1. I rented a Dreamcast from Hollyjew Video and everything just to keep playing it.

SA2 was less mind blowing, and I don't care for it as much these days, but I do have a great deal of nostalgia for both games.

Then everything that came after felt like a step backwards and worse and worse with each new entry until I became the jaded bitter Sonicfag that I am today.

I remember seeing a commercial about it and thinking it was cool and being kind of bummed that no one in my friend circle had a Dreamcast, because that's what everyone thought it would release on.
Keep in mind our only exposure to Sanic was the Genesis games and the GBA ones (the good ones, not the ports) so we didn't know that Adventure one had made this whole "modern Sonic" distinction and there was going on.

When I was a kid I didn't know Saturn existed, so I assumed there was a Sonic game on N64 that I could never find in stores.

>Where were you when Sonic Adventure dropped in the late 90s?
Playing on my N64. I didn't own a Dreamcast or a Saturn as a kid, the only Sega console I owned was a Genesis, and the only Sonic game I had for it was Spinball. I was really bad at that game as a kid and would usually play until I died, then switch to my N64 and play Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Banjo-Tooie, or Donkey Kong 64.

The first 3D Sonic game I owned was Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, then Sonic Heroes, both on the Gamecube.

Despite my first consoles being NES and Genesis, I didn't know about Dreamcast or N64 since my parents bought me PS1 instead, so I completely missed this game until I found a PC version. I then managed to get myself a PC, and my mind was indeed blown away back in 2005 because I couldn't believe there was a Sonic game on PC. At that time, I didn't know Heroes port existed either at that time until I found a pirated version somewhere in 2009. Actually, had no idea they ported other Sonic games as well, but whatever. Anyway, I was genuinely surprised to find a proper 3d platformer about Sonic in general on PC that didn't even require good hardware and I had 9600 GT 512 MB version that could play even ME2. I didn't even care that the game was a buggy piece of shit, I still enjoyed it a lot and died to shitton of bugs but kept playing. Finished the main campaign for every character but couldn't be bothered by collecting all the emblems. Liked Chao Garden quite a lot and have spent plenty of time in it. I listened to the music to death as well since it was freely available in data files. Me and some of my friends actually downloaded the music to our phones too, and my friend's dad even used some chao related track as his ringtone. We used to play it on friends PCs too, along with GTAIII, VC and SA. Great times.

I thought it was amazing in 99 and amazing today, mainly because it was the first 3d sonic and is still one of the best ones after like 12 games

Dreamcast games back then had such a good "new millennium, new possibilities" vibe going on. Which doesn't exist in games anymore.

Sonic Adventure Dreamcast Engine appreciation post

>Burning Rangers is the first time we saw the Lantern Engine show up
>We know that the Saturn to DC switch happened in June/July 1997, according to dev interview
>Dreamcast lantern engine is modified specular color. The PL file has the specified light direction, and range of colors to tint the specular. They can dynamically cycle through colors and direction, as shown in Casinopolis
>The textures in pyramid stages are very different from Dreamcast to GameCube
>SA2 is far more reliant on the Dreamcast hardware than SA1/DX is
>SA2 has stencil shadows, also known as modifier shadows. They take a model volume and cast a slice of it onto models that take it, such as land geometry
>Render Fix needs to emulate the Dreamcast PVR hardware fog before anyone can do it
>SADX PC also had the upside of being a DirectX8 game ported specifically for PC. SA2PC is basically a glorified GameCube emulator with some bugs
>DX GC does use some kind of bump mapping for the water surface.
>Eggman didn't have a flashlight on the Dreamcast version, but on the GameCube/HD versions is just lighting which is applied per-vertex, or in other words just vertex colors calculated at run time
>Iron Gate blue fog/lighting and siren effects are a thick red fog, with strips of fog set to be even thicker
>Egg Quarters and White Jungle uses the scrolling fog effects
>Sonic Adventure 2 was better optimized than the original Sonic Adventure, bigger levels not divided by loading screens
>The only full DLC that SA2 has is in the Kart Racing mode. Everything else is the same as setting a flag that tells the game "enable this" Or in the case of the Chao, it generates a Chao for you
>Almost every VMU is hard-locked to 200 blocks, according to wiki, is 100KB. The most you could do at the time would be SET edits
>SA2PC byteswaps data from big endian to little endian but doesn't check endianness (can that be done?) so it assumes any file is big endian
>>
>>749949349
Sonic Heroes is SA3
>>
>>749949312
I tried this on an emulator recently and I was not impressed. It looks bad, it controls bad, it has unskippable cutscenes and it runs at 30 fps. I don't get the appeal.
>>
>>749949312
It was the first game that made me feel like I was transported to a different world. There were many moments that blew my mind like seeing Eggman’s base off in the distance of the Mystic Ruins.
>>
>>749949349
That was Sonic 06 whether you like it or not.
>>
>>749956135
No it wasnt. Sonic 06 is just sonic 06, whether you like it or not
>>
>>749949312
Yes, it was just about my first 3D game
