Do you guys tend to use the heavy drill? It's extremely effective but I'm finding the added weight is difficult to handle, especially now that I've also found a sledgehammer. My current run found a heavy drill early, but I'm still encumbered as I'm getting into the overgrown jungle layer and so far every time I've made it this far I get ambushed by a salad and die because of my hoarding problem.

How would you balance the usefulness of the drill versus the encumbrance issue? Should I ditch the sledgehammer? Please help, I want to make it through the jungle this time! Is there any way to free up my hands that isn't just dropping the drill? I don't want to lose it but it's no help if it gets me killed when I inevitably get ambushed by a salad.

The heavy drill might be very heavy, but it's worth the weight most of the time. You can just dig down through even rock floors to escape a salad so long as there's no water in the way. The dig speed is fast enough and it doesn't use stamina so you should not have trouble staying ahead of one assuming it isn't already below you.

A sledgehammer is mostly a meme weapon. I would not prioritize it if you have any other tool, but it's fun to hit the ground or walls with it to get super jumps and then throw it midair for even more momentum. Definitely something to play around with in the sandbox first before trying to do in a real run. You could drop it for now since it's not doing much when you have a heavy drill in hand.
>>
>>749967606
Heavy drill is really useful. You can just effortlessly dig your way through and around any problems. Turrets in layer 3? Dig around them. Radiation in layer 4? Dig around them. Salads in layer 5? Dig away from them.
Attacked by spiders? Just drill stunlock them to death in a few seconds because the drill does amazing melee DPS.

The salad problem is really fucking scary when unprepared. You can successfully flee from salads by getting them stuck on tough objects, like those brick structures and life pods. Dynamite is risky, you might roll really high damage and cause the salad to skip its "fleeing" phase of low health and go straight to berserk death charging you. Dynamite might roll really low and not make it flee and blow up the only obstacles that was preventing it from reaching you.
For salads, ideally you'll have a gun of any kind. My favorite combo is the dynamite + gun combo. Plant dynamite in its path while its digging to you to soften it up. One of three things will happen;
>1. The dynamite does the perfect amount of damage to make it flee
Perfect! That's one less salad you have to worry about. If they flee in the right direction to the south west or east they'll basically dig a big smooth path through the jungle for you for free.
>2. The dynamite does not enough damage to make it flee
That's fine. It's still slightly wounded, making shooting it to force it to flee require less ammo.
>3. The dynamite does too much damage making it charge!
Less ideal, but still workable. It's severely wounded and so killing it will require less ammo.

You can fit it in a backpack or trauma kit like anon said. Shoving it in a trauma kit is really wacky and made me laugh the first time an anon told me to do it. I had no fucking idea it would fit in there until I tried it.

Chapter 4 of "That Others May Live" is up!

https://archiveofourown.gay/works/94277046/chapters/253591336

FEATURING:
-Introspection!
-Coffee!
-More Expie hugs!
-Earthquakes!
-Visceral description of a dead Expie!
-Fucking finally, a Milky! Or two, depending on how you quantify it!
-Obscure ethnic slurs!
-A correction of the summary of Chapter 1 because I used too when I should've used two because I'm a fucking imbecilic moron!

Also, it's more difficult than you think to get a good cave picture that doesn't suck ass. Oh, and if you thought that parts of the dialogue in the earthquake scene was a reference to the ending of The China Syndrome, you'd be right. I hope they find a way to bring back Jack Lemmon soon, he was a fantastic actor.

i was thinking of making my own C:U race mod for rimworld
ill start with just expies
from the vanilla genes i think theyd have these
poor int
great mining
great crafting
furry tail (will probally reskin)
furskin
major cell instability (will likely mod to make critical cell instability)
black fur
low libido
unattractive (will put in their lore section that they have an appearance that would look cute on a doll or cartoon but doesnt translate well to real anatomy)
robust
reduced pain
strong melee (will likely change to instead be claws)
superfast wound healing
i feel as though theyd have more poor skills but idk what
also ofc id have to come up with modded genes like hermaphrodite, yellow eyes, yellow blood, and 70% body size
i suppose i should also give them inbred but im just going to imagine this is a relatively more stable version of expies
any revisions to the vanilla genes or suggestions for modded ones
>high libido instead of low and very attractive instead of unattractive
i love my expies regardless of how sexable they are

>>
>>749967606
Honest answer? No. Encumbrance on the red is a death sentence against the salad (being able to dig fast is good yes, but barely being able to jump from vine to vine or over traps is BAD), and the heavy drill will almost always put your encumbrance on the red unless you're running multiple grav bags or found one right in the beginning before accumulating a serious amount of gear.

If you can save storage space in the trauma rig to only pull it out when needed though, it might be worth it.

Also the mini laser drill is useful if you get swarmed by cave tics, happened to me once and got out of the situation by drilling them all, I would still avoid the swarms if I can help it.

First of all, thank you all so much for responding and for all the advice!

>>749967637
It CAN?! I had no idea. I'll make grabbing some titanium a main priority for this, that's huge. Thank you!

>>749968482
Thanks for the advice! I got the heavy drill in the deep gravel lands and it has been an absolute lifesaver, so understandably I don't want to give it up. It sounds like the sledge isn't going to be very helpful, so I'll throw that away first. I think it'll put me back into a safe level of encumbered, too.

>>749968860
That's my thinking as well, my big concern is that it's so ridiculously heavy that when I do get caesar saladed it'll weigh me down too much to escape. I had no luck finding any pistols or weapons, and I don't have a lot of experience with dynamite. That's probably something I need to rectify if I want to kill a salad in future runs. For now I'll settle for drilling away as fast as possible. Thanks!

>>749972196
Yeah, I found the drill early enough that it's been setting the pace for my inventory for several layers. I only have the one grav bag though, so making a trauma rig, titanium tool, etc. would be a huge gain on my encumbrance issues. I think the real question is whether I'll have the time to build it before a get attacked at the start of the layer.

Deliberate, I activated the beacon, hoisting it high for the heavens to see.

The rain continued to fall. Emotionless, unmoved by my struggle. Nothing changed. D-125 squirmed on the ground, making soundless noises of pain.

The rain continued to fall. It caught into my hair, into my clothes, cascading down my face. I held my arm high.

The rain continued to fall.

A new light, a push of force. The clouds overhead parted in a several miles long chasm. I'd recognize the sight from anywhere - I might have been nineteen when I saw it on the TV and I might have only had half a litre of blood left in me, but no doubt this was it. I will never understand where this mission headcannon comes from. Sawians don't get to leave the facility unless they're sent to the target planet. Gunsaw is not currently canon and is (probably) being redone at some point, so all this later era lore speculation is just for fun.

Dunes may be dense and view other sawians as a viable food source, but aren't existentially threatening. If the ones in drop pods are the average example then if you talk to one the right way and make sure it isn't hungry, you might even make a fr-iend for real. They also aren't obligate cannibals, it's just something they're willing to do. Despite that I would imagine they aren't welcome in what passes for polite sawciety.
However there are a lot of dead sawians to go around and plenty of reason to make more on the outskirts of civilization. When violence is the name of the game, it's not a bad thing to be strong, willing, and vicious enough to tear someone in half with your hands. So they have a useful niche outside of hunting down the native dangerous wildlife for fun and food.

Velvets are harder to excuse, but they are in a similar situation where even though they're low empathy sadists, there is a sizable need for violent individuals who are totally cool with killing others for profit.
They're also intelligent enough to know teamkilling is not in their best interest. You'd never be truly safe alone in one's company, but a smart Velvet keeps their victims to the outgroup and not their allies. Which is probably enough to consider it more trouble than it's worth to be rid of them.

Yes! In all my time playing this game I've never regretted sucking popskins. Nor have I ever heard of anyone else regretting doing so. The brain damage is very minor. Assuming you're at 100 brain HP, you can consume as many as you want without issues.
But yes I would try not to consume them if I do already have brain damage. Brain damage really sucks and you'll want that to heal as quickly as possible without any delays from sucking on popskins.

No, that's for the same reason Kris from deltarune is gender neutral and you can't call him "he" even though he's obviously a man. It's the most inclusive gender identity so anyone can self insert right? "They" doesn't sound sterile and dehumanizing at all, it's nice and representative. Especially of himself. But unlike Kris it gets a pass because by sheer accident he stumbled on the ideal reproductive biology for a slave race.
The creatures themselves are obviously aware of the concept, and there's plenty of ways for them to handle having a language that wasn't meant for them, but pronoun policy is probably going to be one of their central political issues that means absolutely nothing of practical importance except group loyalty.

>Every death grants you a little more experience.
That's pretty much this game summed up as a whole. The reason we can even reach layer 5 in the first place is because of all our previous fatal attempts that we learned from.
Do you remember the very first time you played this game? How completely helplessly clueless you were about everything? I like to think that first-time experience is exactly how it is for every single sawian that is sent to the caves. They have absolutely no idea what to do, what to watch out for, what NOT to do, they're clueless, just like we were.
Thinking about it like this it just makes things even more sad. These poor bastards never stood a fucking chance. It makes the expie that canonically found and recovered the cargo absolutely exceptional. Not like they were born super smart or strong or anything, just that they rolled the dice over and over and happened to win the lottery of circumstances that allowed them to learn how to survive in the caves the hard painful way without completely getting killed in the process.
How many times have you learned things the hard way? Or only learned from a mistake once, because it killed you? Like destroying a turret with melee and not knowing what happens afterwards. Ough. I've seen multiple anons learn that meleeing turrets is dangerous the hard and painful way. They're much like real expies in the caves who get themselves badly hurt and killed simply because they didn't know better. It's tragic. I think it goes to show that for the Company, recovering the Cargo is not the highest priority, because if it was they'd ensure sawians are better prepared.
Or maybe the Company does want the Cargo retrieved but is just so comically evil they're more than happy to send as many unprepared unequipped sawians (and sawian kids) to their agonizing miserable deaths as it takes. They're expendable, after all.

Imagine it like this this basically; a first-time player successfully descending all 11 layers and recovering the cargo. I think that's an excellent way to think about it, about the impossible suicide mission sawians are forced into. The odds of success are pretty much impossible.
But not zero.

Food. Lots of food.
Making expies (and probably all sawians) happy is as fucking simple as keeping them well-fed. Just feed them good tasty food and keep their bellies full and they'll soon become the happiest sawians in the world.
Just keep their balls empty and their bellies full. It's as shrimple as that.

Makes me wonder how long it will take after release for someone to legitimately beat the full game (without cheats or layer skip commands).
My guess is that even with all the experience people have accumulated from playing the demo, i don't think it will be done on the first day. Not if the difficulty spikes we see from layer 3 onwards keep piling up past the jungle the way they do in the demo. There's also the fact that a full game run will be a huge gaming marathon taking upwards of 10 hours to finish, which means that every Casualties fan in the world will have one shot two for a few lucky timezones at beating the game on release day.

If anyone does it the game is too easy IMO
>>
>>750063514
>If anyone does it the game is too easy IMO
The game has almost certainly been made too easy because of orson's skill issues. Most certainly on the default difficulty anyway.
Someone will definitely play on the easiest difficulty and win first day guaranteed, unchipped even. Might take longer for something like desolate.
Speaking of all that though, how the hell will that work? Will it be like the shitty picker the demo has but hopefully slightly less scuffed looking? And can you beat the game on game journalist difficulty (or even with custom sliders to make it easier) to unlock milky/dune?
>>
You can almost hear the observer laughing.
Now that I think about it, shouldn't spikes also root you in place when they impale you? Like what beartraps do. You would have to wait for the spike to slowly recede over time or destroy it yourself. I think that would really up the horror of getting spiked. I mean getting spiked is already horrible but I'm just saying they deserve WORSE.

Seeing how a single unlucky fall can instantly end your 10 hour run, I think turning the difficulty down a bit seems reasonable.
I just hope the health system will still remain important for surviving.
>>
>>750064054
>shouldn't spikes also root you in place when they impale you
What, and ruin the gleeful experience of chaining spikes and/or other hazards together? I suppose it would make getting spiked at the end of a series of events more emotionally charged but toning down on scenarios like that webm wouldn't be worth it!
>>750064198
>Seeing how a single unlucky fall can instantly end your 10 hour run
As long as "unlucky" actually means skill issue, this is a good thing. Turning down the difficulty would be shit and miss the whole point of it being stressful and high stakes.

I hope that at least the better ending that we were promised for this mode requires you to beat it in the vanilla setting without run modifiers. The one thing that would be really lame is if people could just cheese their way to the good ending by putting it on "paradise unchipped" and just breezing through everything. Happiness has to be fought for!
>Speaking of all that though, how the hell will that work? Will it be like the shitty picker the demo has but hopefully slightly less scuffed looking?
I don't mind the way the selection screen looks in the demo tbqh. But i think it's likely that the full game will have a more "professional looking" menu in general.
>>750064054
>shouldn't spikes also root you in place when they impale you
They probably should but i think that having the possibility of Cannibal Holocaust'ing yourself in the very first level of the game would be a bit, uh... unbalanced, lol

Craft food + the wooden cube and its materials. At least, those are the items I usually miss.
But, really, there's no way to grind INT xp besides proceeding to the next layer, which gives you +80xp, far more than any other source. If you want 13 INT before layer 2 you just have to get lucky with blueprints and E-pdas I guess.
Buying items and successfully haggling also gives you some int, but very little (+1 and +2.5 respectively)

>13 intelligence by the end of layer 1
That's a bit of an overkill int level to go for by the end of L1 i think (considerably hard to do if playing with the time limit too, since spending more time crafting means spending less time looting PDAs and blueprints, and vice versa)

But if you really want to go for it, i advise getting in the habit of campfiremaxxing. From the moment you acquire yourself a firestarter, you have over 100 points of INT that can be farmed with it. Making and lighting up torches, boiling water, burning poop into charcoal, cooking food like pemmican, bread, soup etc. There are even more possibilities if you happen to run into the more uncommon ingredients like ketchup or tree sap in a barrel.

You can also gamble for a few more advanced crafts at INT 12 like the chest drain, bone welding tool and such. Preparing the materials alone should give you plenty of INT experience. And you earn the xp points even if the craft fails.

as a furfag the gameplay loop is a little tiny bit dissapointing frankly. i would have LOVED if this was truly furry noita in that the map is massive and open and expansive (with just the illusion of the main path being linear), but no it's just a bogstandard linear path to the end. I'll still buy it day 1 and play the fuck out of it, but i do think it could've been a lot more (possibly). the medical system is unique enough that i love it anyway.

I think a 'meta' checklist or todo list at the start of every run will always be in this sort of game, no matter what really. Just the nature of the genre and such, the fun begins after you get yourself set up. The set up can only be so varied especially if you want to do it "optimally".
Noita is somewhat similar in this regard, but that game is extremely non-linear and has a billion branching paths that cas u doesn't really get so you have a lot more options available for your 'setup' phase. I'm sure you can make your own fun or be a little risky if you want to and craft less the more you play cas u to spice things up at the start

noita doesn't really have that at all. noita does not have survival requirements like hunger and thirst, and doesn't have crafting to craft necessary things like more carrying capacity and whatnot. scouring the first layer for a better wand and some potions or something is not even remotely similar to "destroy your starting pod for the plastic. gather leaves as quickly as possible to make a bag. etc. repeat every run forever." you're just playing the game in noita, and stuff like the orbs for extra health are not necessary at all, i'd argue they aren't even particularly useful unless you're doing a specific achievement run and just need to make yourself godmode as quickly as possible

I mean yes they almost assuredly know the concept the word is describing, but I find it hard to believe they know the word itself considering it's only been common word for what? 2 years? And it probably will be out of the lexicon in another five and it's pretty much the domain of online insults, which a Sawian would never know. I'm just saying it feels weird, like if this comic were made 10 years ago (or maybe even 50) I could see every other word being there just fine, except "larpcat" would be "cuckcat" or whatever semi-generic word for "I don't like you and you're a faggot" is floating around the innernet these days.

The "checklist" aspect is just a consequence of people inevitably optimizing the part of the game that is most susceptible to a predictable progression. Every run will start with you crashing into the gravel lands with no storage or tools, so naturally people will gravitate towards a common strategy for acquiring these as consistently as possible without having to rely on loot RNG every time.

It might be repetitive, yes, but it's as fixable of a "problem" as the "problem" of opening memorization in chess. I put "problem" between quotes because, well, i don't consider it a big deal really. Sure you're starting with the same first few moves most of the time, but the real game begins after that phase anyways.

You don't strictly need to do any of the crafting bullshit once you properly git gud. Especially if you give yourself the starting kit in settings.
Playing craftless is a pretty fun challenge mode once you are decent enough that you can loop reliably.
I expect dunes will be the character of choice for people who have played enough to be sick of the initial gathering and crafting cycle.

I would imagine that a Milky's visible mood would probably not change that much except at either extremes. So a Milky who's close to their breaking point is probably a bit more curt, a bit less tolerant of annoyances, and a bit colder - and needless to say they won't be smiling at anything, but they won't appear to be on the verge of anything to an outside observer (unless said observer is very familiar with their usual attitudes). Once the Milky asks for hugs, that's it - it's the last stop before they suffer a complete breakdown. They're drowning and they need help, but even at this point it won't be obvious to an untrained observer how dire it all is.

I'm playin the demo for the first time and I can tell it's something special, but it's so fucking dark?
Like running out of flashlight battery feels like guaranteeing a loss an the near future, there is no real way to make long drops safely or avoid traps after that.
Carrying around one of the glowing fruits makes it not impossible but still.
>>
>>750112364
Carrying some glowfruit is always handy. You can throw them which really helps light up drops, and as a bonus it can trigger traps.
>>
>>750112364
>Carrying around one
Several. If you have no light source, carry at least two. Three, ideally.
You also can craft a makeshift headlamp with rope, a glowfruit, and a spider's carcass. Range's the same as a glowfruit, but frees up a hand slot.
>>
>gallcrystals
>like non-stop
>>
>>750112364
Campfires and torches go a long way if you don't get lucky to run into a light in loot or don't want to craft THE flashlight (which is expensive, but absolutely more than worth it)

>>
The craftless challenge is complete.
I did follow anon's idea of mindwiping and going on a genocide crusade, but i don't think that was needed at all. The drop pods and loot crates give you more than enough to get by pretty well on Normal difficulty. Also, it feels fucking creepy and nihilistic to play like this. Not even a salad showing up on screen plays music. Very depressing atmosphere.

Overall, things went surprisingly smooth. My main takeaway from this is that the only crafts that are absolutely essential in a normal run are foliage bags and canvas/dressing, the rest is mostly optional. Those were the only two things that ever gave me an "itch to craft" in the run. No storage in the beginning can really be a pain and rationing bandages becomes an actual thing when you're not allowed to carry a million canvas on your material pouch. The rest is easy to acquire if you're good enough at parkour to sweep the map horizontally for those fat stacks of loot. Yes, even light sources. I found 2 emissive crystals and 2 emergency lights on layer 1 alone.

They can? I thought the drill was too big for the belt, but it might just have been because I had a couple of tools on it. I'll try that next time, it would have saved me a LOT of trouble earlier on. The Trauma Rig was a lifesaver, I found some ilmenite ore near the top of the jungle and just barely had enough INT and materials scrounged to put it together.

Would it be worth it to have a plasma and a heavy drill? I know the plasma cutter can cauterize bleeding which could be useful, and it's better for metal to break into vaults. Mostly an academic question, because there is no way I am ever giving up this drill!

>have a plasma and a heavy drill
There is certainly utility in both, I think I'd prefer to have a mini laser drill and a plasma cutter just for ease of storage. But if you're at the point where you've got a trauma rig, you can most certainly handle carrying around both if you really wanted to.
In the full release I think it'll really depend on how many steel structures there are around the place. Even in earlier levels the super boxed in medical + misc crate structures you can easily steal the items in them without needing to break any steel, and the other structures only need scrap or red blood which you can carry around/acquire easier than a plasma cutter, though the plasma cutter is basically an infinite source of getting into these places.

Honestly the steel structures traumatized one of my early runs. I managed to slip in through a one tile gap, but my parkour skills weren't good enough to make it back out.... So carrying around a plasma cutter is a security blanket.

This run is my current best, and I'm hoping to loop a few more times and get more experience before the full release.

Burns do feel like they should be in the base game at least. Another mod for a different game had them, and there was a fantasy 2nd-flesh thing for patching yourself up. Fun times hunting for them while being a nearly dead husk.

It's really quite impressive, we have disperfags, vorefags, fatfags, fartfags, (may Allah forgive me for uttering this phrase) v*nillafags, and pretty much everything under the sun but no gorefags. I'm not sure how this happened.

If you actually tried going through her post history, you'll notice that this artist is not a groomer at all.
It's the other way around.

Anon... With all due respect: that's implied by simply calling it a groomer. Groomers reproduce by grooming, so unfortunately this means said artist is more likely than not a groomer as evidenced by the forced transition fix.
