>PlayStation founder Ken Kutaragi says discs became "metaphor for 'owning' games", and that upset at their discontinuation is a "mentality issue"https://www.eurogamer.net/ken-kutaragi-playstation-discs>Ken Kutaragi, the founder of PlayStation and architect of the first three PlayStation consoles, has said that people being upset about Sony's discontinuation of game discs is probably a "mentality issue". He understands it, he noted, but that doesn't make it "economically reasonable" for Sony to keep printing them.>"I really understand [why some people are upset]," he added, "but I don't think it's economically reasonable. Maybe it's a mentality issue."

He's right. If buying those physical games meant the software on them was your property, you could make copies of them and hand them out for free or sell them for profit.Everyone always knew that you didn't own the game, just the disc

In the end of the article he proposes a solution to current hardware problems too - doubling down on putting all the resources in AI so that everything can be streamed without private hardware ownership.>Kutaragi's advice? Harness AI and cloud computing to their full potential and "we won't need any console".You truly are going to own nothing. In near future you are not going to even have a choice of hardware ownership because nobody sells it to private customers anymore. Data centers are the new target audience.

He's right.Nobody uses disks for anything anymore. The problem isn't that disks are obsolete and people are ludites who want a useless old tech for irrational reasons. The problem is that when disks were actually utalitarian one could expect to be able to trade and use their game freely without the imput of the company that sold it to them.It was ownership in practice, whatever the terms and conditions said, and generally the law agreed, as owning a disk was the same as owning a book. You had the right to re-sell it and companies could not just disable it remotely. That reality slowly faded away unnoticed by the masses. But the removing of the last vestige of that olde time of liberty has reminded the masses of what they've been deprived of silently.Unless there is some move to legislate ownership of digital only games as discrete things and not as something that can be bundled into your account, this is just the last gasp of an era quickly fading away.fyi: Legally you can sell your account holding any number of games, as per legislation on digital licences being transferable, but there is no requirement to allow you to resell your games individually. This is different from legislation on phisical media holding games, like disks.
>>750036943It's funny as shit that he thinks Sony will own a gaming brand in such an environment. Phasing out the console will be phasing out Playstation in its entirety. I can't wait for these idiots to start doing exactly that, let's see how it works out for them when they've made themselves redundant.
>>750036603>Does not allow reselling digital copies of games in countries where they are legally obligated to do so like the EU>Has deleted media from their digital services recently>Claiming warranty on faulty Dualsense controllers required knowing the serial number of the controller which was printed externally on the controller in ink that would simply wipe off well before the warranty expiredThis would not be an issue if Sony had a trustworthy reputation or if the end user had full control over their console and cloud storage. >>750037018I've looked into 4k Blu-ray and honestly it might be one of Sony's worst formats ever. Insane DRM, its almost impossible to play on a PC without buying somenq0 year old rare disc drive. Most CPUs don't even support the DRM anymore since it was a security flaw. Most standalone 4k Blu-ray players seem to have issues too, the players and discs are poorly made and even enthusiasts on youtube are constantly complaining about planned obsolescence. At most they last 5 years or so. Its bizarre since 4k Blu-ray is barely even a new format, its based off the PC BD-XL, which worked fine of regular Blu-ray burners.

>>750037259ironically enough the best, not a pain in the ass 4k bd player is the ps5
>>750036603It is not a mentality issue though, for consolefag it's a very, very real, practical issue of ownership and control over the games they pay for. Sony has literally removed paid content from PlayStation users before, if they don't have the discs then the customers have LITERALLY NOTHING to ensure they can maintain access to the games they paid for.
Is it ever a surprise the ones making such dogshit decisions for the sake of profit are old, retarded, out of touch boomers? You will never find a demographic more suited to destroying a company's future than the fucking retarded boomer generation. They think they are right 100% of the time, and any evidence that goes against their stupid bullshit is somehow offensive and not true in their dumb rotted minds. There needs to be age limits for board and member positions in companies if they wish to remain level-headed. Okay let's get this straight. Selling someone a permanent product and then claiming they don’t actually own it is both morally wrong and legally unenforceable. It’s as absurd as telling restaurant diners they can't take home leftover food they paid for, or telling someone they don't own a tool bought at a hardware store. While trademark and patent laws prevent you from mass-producing counterfeit goods with their IP those laws dont invalidate the First Sale Doctrine. Once you legally purchase a genuine product, you have every right to resell it because you paid for it with legal tender earned by the sweat on your brow. You own it permanently even if you don't own the right to make copies of it and sell it.Pretending otherwise destroys your reputation, everyone is going to hate you morally because it's wrong no matter what any law says and overall even the legal system doesn't fully support you

Notice how the troons getting fired by Microsoft aren't coming back with reverse engineering Xbox shit, because they were genuinely useless troons, but Sony had legit engineers that they fired for AI and those guys just joined the hacking scene and started dropping bombs on Sony because they're fans of gaming as well. I know Microsoft and Nintendo are supporting Sony behind the scenes with trying to lock down gaming as a rental service, and I'm praying they're going to let hubris settle in and they open their mouth when they think they have gamers by the balls, because that will be the reason all their shit gets hacked for ethical reasons.

I actually agree that its become very obvious that discs are on the way out.I think the disc thing has just become a stand-in for console players getting so endlessly cucked. The real difference between PC and Consoles was never really about graphics or game availability or anything, it was about to what degree you were forced to endure endless nickel and diming from big corporations. It is very obvious that console players are probably the most cucked people on earth, but the argument has now become whether Xbox/Playstation players are bigger cattle. The disc thing will fizzle out eventually, but the anger over endlessly getting boned on exclusive locked platforms will not. I feel bad for the people who waited too long to switch to PC, and frankly when my PC dies I will probably just cobble together whatever old parts I can to play stuff I already own. I will never entrap myself on a fucking console again.

>>750036603My cousin married a guy who's father was a higher up at Sony starting in '92 and said when they were working on the DVD players they were considering having movies that weren't distributed by Sony/Columbia Pictures work horribly on the machines thinking that it would make people buy only movies distributed by them. Then a few months later they'd release a more expensive player that would work with all studio's movies. He said it would have been the stupidest business decision ever if it ended up happening.

>>750041003The thing is discs are not organically on their way out. It's being astroturfed. Technology is not comfortably at the level where we can reliably kick physical media to the curb. Our infrastructure hasn't changed since 1979 and can't support an all digital eco system on a macro scale.
>>750042324I can easily see that from '90s Sony.
>>750044542Don't know because I would have bought up their entire stock.
>>750041501Yes, now you understand. In addition to all of this the executives who make the decisions that lose Sony all this money and public trust will never face consequences for their terrible decisions, but the people under them sure will!
