GTA1/2 were mediocre games but GTA3, being inspired by OoT (after nintendo had shown how to make 3d worlds) created a 3d open world GTA that is one of the most influential vidya ever.
It created a massive meme GTA clones and just actually popularized open world games.
Even OoT was only a hub world.
So with that and only a year they were able to churn out VC, then 2 years SA and each being much better selling than the last. 3 big selling games in 4 years.
this allowed them to make a new engine, experiment with 4 which didnt hit the heights of the previous games though with the hobby being used by more people, still sold well.
Then with all the money and growing talent this gained them skill.
Then they made V which the online was a surprise hit and obviously made them bank. the the games sales are inflated because it has been re0released multiple times.
Lastly RDR2 was their literal peak of vidya in technicality as well as story writing. Even know houser and other head writers have now left. the combination of GTAO popularity and RDR2 quality, as well as all the money being put in has made GTA6 the biggest vidya launch of all time. Most expensive game ever made and R* have become the benchmark leaders of the industry, along with nintendo.
So yeah its a ever increasing climb of capitalism and being able to hire and keep skilled devs.

I played GTA since the first game and I was amazed at 3. Blown away by it, it had such a vibe to it.
VC is my fav but I am not a bug GTA fan. Though, after RDR2 and seeing the quality of that game and the direction they are taking GTA6 its the first time since GTA3 I am actually really hyped for a GTA game.

I grew up on Marvel Vs Capcom, Kirby’s Air Ride, Final Fantasy 7, DMC, Dark Souls etc. games made by people who dreamed of creating fantastical worlds of magic and swords. Many of these games were apart of my formative years so my love for them is fucking genuine. And then a game about shooting niggas in and slanging drugs became the literal GAME (TM) for ultra mass consumption and it just feels like a meme. Phantom Blade 0 will have infinitely more engaging gameplay than muh crime simulator while Snoop is on the radio but GTA is gonna sell enough to support a small country for at least 10 years. It’s fucking insane. I don’t get the hype.

Because that was the first GTA game that broke through to the normalfag-mainstream and solidified its presence as one of the most popular game series. GTA4 wasn't nearly as popular but rode that wave, while GTA5 was immensely popular partly because it returned to San Andreas for the setting. GTA6 seems like it's doing its best to just be "GTA5, but in Florida", so it being highly anticipated shouldn't be a surprise. GTA is part of the "gun" in the "ball and gun gamer" meme. It is one of the most normalfag-appeal series ever.

I like RPGs/JRPGs and stuff too, and GTA is something I only play rarely compared to stuff I like more, but I'm self-aware of being the outlier.

It's because GTAVI has the ability to appeal to the type of casual gamer that might not even buy one game a year. Like a person that would only play multiplayer online games like FIFA / NBA2K / Madden. This is the game for that kind of person, and millions of them are buying GTAVI in addition to millions of more people who just have FOMO.

I'm not buying it though. I've bought many games this year and played through many of them, and I'm still going through Galactic Racer and I might even get a switch 2 next month to get the OoT remake. I have no desire for GTAVI because the game is just not the type of game I want to play. I don't like Rockstar's games anyways, they are very basic, lack depth and while the technology and details are cool it's not a reason for me to play a game. RDR2 for example was a pile of boring shit to me.

We know that the cops are going to be way harder to escape, smarter, NPCs are going to be armed more often as well. Traditional lock-on is disabled now when it comes to shooting. Of course a more limited loadout will make things harder as well. Your health only heals to a point and you need to use meds or food to heal. The car physics have been revamped to include more variety, driving kits that change handling and now having separate stats for off-road and on-road. (it’s a mix of 4 and 5 where super cars will handle like 5 and more basic cars handle like 4). They say that the missions are more open now but they haven’t shown how. They have said that that one drug house shoot-out in the extended look has multiple different routes

San Andreas saw a major increase in scope, and just the vastness of the world made a big impression. This was before the point the industry realized map size was a major selling point and started writing the world dimensions on the back of the box. That in addition with Jack Thomson pushing harder than ever left GTA at the forefront of public consciousness. 4 probably cost them a few fans. They cut the scope of the game dramatically and the driving was off putting for some people, who Saints Row was happy to accommodate, even going as far as mocking GTA 4 in the marketing for 2, but the gritty seriousness of the narrative and environment gave it real staying power with the people who stuck around, and along with RDR it gave Rockstar a reputation for setting well written tragedies in the most believable open worlds in the industry. GTA 5 tried to capture its old fans, bringing back the scope that was missing since SA, and I'm sure setting it in Los Santos was no coincidence either. Just like what happened with GTA 4, Saints Row was changing in ways it's classic fans didn't appreciate and Rockstar were more than happy to eat Volition's lunch. Budgets were also becoming somewhat of a marketing tool and Rockstar had put Hollywood to shame with it's budget this time. GTAO came along and expanded the fan base to all kinds of niches. Competitive shooters, the dying arcade racing market, peacocks, RPG lites and role-players. This was unbelievably successful, proven by the shark cards being the most profitable thing in existence. Then RDR2 came along, which was at the very least an attempt to position themselves at the peak of everything journalists like.
