They're called "open world games" but in actuality it’s "empty world games". Vast areas of nothingness where you can enjoy the view for a true cinematic experience™, and optionally follow the obvious on-screen arrows/markers to your target if you maybe feel like playing. Players nowadays are ADHD-ridden and don't have the time nor patience to go exploring and finding shit, and they'll quit at the first game over screen or whenever they hit a roadblock.

Back in the day I could tolerate these types of games, it was a small niche and occasionally it was alright to play some sandbox game. But now everything has to be open world for no other reason than to justify you buying the newest PSwhatever. And it all looks the fucking same.
Fuck open world. Fuck it up its ass.

>inb4 seething zoomers come to defend the openworld slop because that’s the only type of gameplay they know since birth
lol, suck my benis.

I'm 34 and these are the only kinds of games I play. But yes they suck. I think it's entirely possible to make a good open world game but it's much easier to make yet another one of those instead. I'm hoping indies can do it one day.

Shoutout to Lantern of the Laughless Saint for being the closest thing so far

>true cinematic experience
Open world is not cinematic. It's a directly contrary design choice to that which is why merging it with cinematic storyfaggot moviegames doesn't work

It's for pvre gameplay only games. Like strategy games - the most patrician genre of them all

Why are people repeating the same misconception? Popular open world games have tons of shit to find and to do, there's an enemy camp behind every corner, lots of "hidden" chests, lots of berries or mushrooms to grab, and plenty of side-quests to engage with. Try swinging around Insomniac's Spider-Man without stumbling upon a crime or a collectable, or ride Roach in Witcher without finding a quest guy waiting for you. If anything, there's TOO MUCH shit to do, shit that is not memorable. It's entertaing in a shallow sense, and I wasn't bored collecting mushrooms or finding koroks in BotW, and clearing enemy camps in Elden Ring was "entertaing" because the combat is good but it didn't give me anything beyond that like a good, memorable level would, and that's where the problem is. Although honestly it's not that much of a problem because core gameplay is what decides the quality of any game, and some of these games are alright if you're not autistic about 100%-ing them.

micro tasks is not shit to find or to do, zoomoid

aren't zoomers supposed to be the fortnite generation?

No one forces you to play them.

These games dont bother me because we learned 15+ years ago about the illusion of "freedom" that these games provide.
I still enjoy them occasionally but probably because I play maybe one or two of these a year. For example I recently replayed Arkham knight and I'm currently playing Ghost of Tsushima on lethal difficulty and I am honestly having a lot of fun.

I think big open worlds would be cool if you could run and jump around them real fast

so like if sonic frontiers didn't suck
>>
>>750149354
What? Are you mad that you can't find a legendary dildo in every bush?
>>
>>750154026
Big open worlds would be cool only with some kind of a event randomizer next to the already predetermined main campaign. So you have no idea what can you encounter on any part of the map. Same with treasures. Just randomize everything so faggots actually need to explore and not just download a guide on where all the chests are.

I think by now most people feel the fatigue of open world design. I recently tried to replay elden ring and man, that game is some real sloggy shit. You waste so much time just riding that fucking horse around, a whole lot of fucking nothing happens like 85% of the time and the "rewards" for exploring the map are dogshit. There's a reason people treat elden ring like a boss rush game. It's basically shadow of the colossus pretending to be a souls game. You hunt down bosses to access more areas to kill more bosses, everything else is irrelevant due to how boring and uninteresting it is. Rewards stay consistently shit all throughout the game and even in the dlc you don't get much outside of like 2 good talismans and maybe some weapons or spells for your specific character, maybe.

The interconnected design of their older games is better and it's not even close. I feel the same about pretty much all other open world games. The most interesting part in GTA, as an example, is always looking up secrets or weird shit in the map like aliens or bigfoot or some other nonsense. Even older GTA maps felt better to play in even if they were smaller, and that in itself is a tell. The more compact the experience, the better.

one of the most memorable vidya moments I had was in BOTW, when I didn't have any warm weather gear or warm food and I climbed Mount Lanayru while holding just a torch to stay warm. Since they burn out eventually and you have yo put them away to climb it made the trip really unique. I eventually found a fire elemental 2 hand sword halfway up which made it much easier. Then at the top of the mountain I saw the dragon and simce it was the first dragon I saw in the game it was absolutely incredible. This is obviously a once-a-playthrough experience but I'll never forget that session. Sometimes playing like a dumb kid makes the game more fun.

>where you can enjoy the view for a true cinematic experience
Something corridor games can't do.
Point for Open-World. They are literally capable of everything old-school did, and more.

>obvious on-screen arrows/markers
Can be toggled, unlike linear games railroading script, their arbitrary wall and unclimbable area, using the same kind of yellow paint simply because in an era of absolute fidelity, it is actually harder to see with what you are supposed to interact.

>Players nowadays are ADHD-ridden and don't have the time nor patience to go exploring and finding shit
Thank you for acknowledging that Open-world are for players with patience and a taste for exploration

>now everything has to be open world
No?
Beside, open-world are just bigger linear world with optional stuffs to do and traversal mechanics.

>PSwhatever
Irrelevant since all platform have those. It really show how little you care about the topic, you just want an outlet to complain.

>And it all looks the fucking same.
That's corridors games for you. When you limit your game area to small urban/wild area, you have no room for innovation.
What are you going to do? Add fancy sculpture to break monotony? Play a QTE to get around your limited gameplay?

>muh slop!
Your fault for playing those.

>>750153296
>Why are people repeating the same misconception?
At this point it's just bait.
Pretending "content isn't content" and reversing the burden of proof.
