Why did PC vegans surrender ownership of their games? Just so their lord and savior can buy yachts?
>>
>>750152005
Because on disc DRM was far worse than anything consolefags have ever had to deal with. For all intents and purposes we already didn't own our games
>>
>>750152005
Id rather own the machine that plays the games than live within an ecosystem where saying a naughty word can render your machine unusable.
>>
Why are console fags babbling about things they gave up on and don't understand? So incredibly bored without any games to play?
>>
>>750152005
because if you want ownership of the game on PC you can always just pirate it
>>
Do not speak ill of glorious leader and his yachts
>>
>>750152005
Because new aaa games were suddenly 5 bucks provided by your friendly russian key reseller and for that price you didn't give a fuck if you just rented it for 3 decades.
>>
>>750152005
>Why did PC vegans surrender ownership of their games?
We did? I must have missed the part where I stopped having control over the files on my SSD.
>>
>>750152005
Half Life 2 was meant to be one of the biggest games in the history of PC gaming
Really it was just a shitty alpha demo to test some physics
The game is about 5-6 hours long and was made to require steam solely so you couldn't resell/rent it/loan it from a friend

PC gaming was, for the most part, actually quite pirate friendly - you would p[robably spend 3-4 on a 'new' game with some friends and just share it and crack it

Ironically HL2 started a new wave of piracy with how much of a scumbag gabe is. But decades later and millions of dollars into marketing and we get 'daddy gabe' or, as he is known to the intelligent 'the reason gaming is dead'

who writes this shit? there was no used pc game market and no, i don't care how your turd world shithole does things and what the fuck are you talking about renting pc games for anyway? piracy reached the state it did because developers started abandoning pc. the pc ports we did get were all poorly optimized and by that point they phased out the cool manuals you would get by giving you a slip of paper. you couldn't even find pc games in stores anymore, you went to gamestop and all they had was a cuck island for pc games with bejeweled and the sims. mom and pop shops didn't even deal in pc games. there was no place you could get pc games except ordering them online and unless you wanted to pay double the price you were waiting a month, maybe more, to receive your shitty port. this is why piracy became as widespread as it did and why gabe described it as a service problem

Unironically, PC is actually the only platform where your allowed to own your games. We already went over this. Drm has nothing to do with ownership. You can still use your console to play games, even though you can't illegally jailbreak it. It's called following the law, the same law that outlines ownership.

It depends if it becomes a thing, like Steam killing physical. The thing on consoles is that Sony is jumping the shark, Xbox always wanted to cuck physical so only Nintendo is left doing it but then again a fair amount of retards are falling for the gkc scam (japan with the ffvii "remake" lmao). Alright here you go then, here's a modern physical PC game that you can resell https://www.wetheindies.com/product-page/the-winds-path-pc-dvd
PC is an open platform, devs can sell you the physical non DRM disc if they want, nothing is stopping them other than the fact that no one other tendie cultists give a fucking shit about that worthless garbage
And since you are fucking retarded, I'll just point out that this item includes a steam key AND the disc with the installer in it without any DRM. So you basically get the game twice.

Imagine, you're an indie dev in 2026. Are you going out of your way and make a physical release to cater to 3 autists, or are you just going to focus on making the fucking game and selling it with 0 hassle on digital storefronts?

If I want to own my PC games, then I pirate them, simple as that. This is the only platform where I know that no one can take away my games. PC games were being forsaken by an increasing number of publishers in the late 2000s because PCs were falling behind in one crucial hardware aspect. The install base for PCs with DVD drives was still so absurdly low. Where most PCs still only had a CD player, consoles were already moving on to HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, the latter of which was a licensing nightmare.

That's why a lot of PC games that came out in the late 00s had both CD and DVD box variants, to account for the overwhelming majority of PC users that never picked up a DVD Drive. It's also why there were so many PS360 games that remained console-only. It was all just because publishers did not want to bother with the hassles of multiple physical formats for what was perceived at the time as a much smaller install base. It was bad enough that you'd need 4+ CDs to install a game that could fit on one DVD; it was over once games needed to start boxing multiple DVDs.

Many major publishers were backing out of PC by the late 2000s because of this disc format issue. Anything else like fears of piracy was nothing compared to the logistics and costs of still having to ship with the older disc formats.
The shift to online distribution of digital copies was the only thing PC could do to remain a viable platform. Steam was there at the right place at the right time.

>But I do, it's you being unable to accept it.
That part was a general you referring to unhacked consoles, not about you personally.
>Then why only stick to consoles?
Do you mean why I focus on consoles in my arguments? Because consoles are locked platforms that you have to hack to approach any sense of ownership while PC does not equal windows and you can freely do whatever you want with one out of the box.
>we know the vast majority of computers are sold with windows
That's true. Still doesn't affect me, you or anyone else's ability to install Linux, BSD, TempleOS or whatever else.
>None of them has real drawbacks.
Hacking a console is more involved and still has limits on what you can do. Can't play online for example. Or if it breaks unrelated to the hack, you can't get warranty. You can buy a PC with windows installed, install something else and still get warranty because the PC is inherently open and doesn't need to be forced to be so.

Steam doesn't enforce any DRM. Developers can choose to publish DRM free.
Valves Steam DRM, which developers can optionally choose, has been bypassed since the day it release with a simple file drop in the directory or goldberg if you want to go that route. As such a majority of my library is DRM free and backups are housed on bluray discs with the bypasses for portable sharable gaming. And I get to decide where/how it is played and from what format it is executed.
This can be done on some consoles but requires significantly greater effort than the 2 seconds it took me to permanently bypass everything and take ownership of my games.
Steam has never made any effort to correct these extremely well known and long lasting bypasses either. It is just a way to gatekeep the truly retarded people out of ownership which is pretty fucking funny imo.

From: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rights_management

>Digital rights management (DRM) is the management of legal access to digital content. Various tools or technological protection measures,[1] such as access control technologies, can restrict the use of proprietary hardware and copyrighted works.[2] DRM technologies govern the use, modification and distribution of copyrighted works (e.g. software, multimedia content) and of systems that enforce these policies within devices.[3] DRM technologies[4] include licensing agreements[5] and encryption.[6]

Umm, sweetie. He doesn't. It's Snoy and MS that won't let you have Steam on their consoles.

What's stopping you from playing the games on consoles isn't DRM. It's Sony and MS not letting you. It's the Console's DRM. And that's exactly what you don't have on PC. Don't like Steam? Don't use it. Don't like Windows? Don't use it.

Good. I'm relying on it. Without barely functional retards accounting for the majority of gamers businesses would take notice of this glaring hole presumably purposefully left open by Valve. Between that and being able to use steamcmd to (with the help of publicly available and archived manifests) pull ANY version of a game build you choose going back to pre-launch it truly is a phenomenal time to be a PC gamer lmfao. I've had simple scripts written for years now that allow me to input a title's name and it provides me a list of software versions which I can click on to pull the exact version of the game I want to play. All at extremely high speeds (though much older builds are on older infrastructure so they'll be slightly slower to download).
Even games that have been delisted for 15 years I can download. Games where publishers pulled all the licensed audio? I can still pull the build from before that happened. Games where devs added Denuvo after launch? Not a fucking problem, downloaded straight from Steam.
