Players hate that though so here we are.BG1 with permadeath is one of the best gaming experiences Ive ever had. Every quest is high stakes, forces you to play all classes, you actually begin to care about the dide characters.

The devs simply would have had to come up with exceptionally convoluted ways to make them irretrievable and they couldn't be bothered, so they just hand-waved it so they could get their flavored elf babes in place for the player to romance.
