Why is the Sega Dreamcast so beloved on /v/? Was it really that impressive in 1998?
>>
>>750167193
Faggots who never touched it pretend to like it for internet cool points.

Because it's literally the best console ever made. Multiplayer gaming has mostly moved to PC as PC gaming has come to exist on stronger and stronger hardware, so for singleplayer, and even for the online elements that still have fan support, Dreamcast is and always has been the shit. SA1, SA2, Tony Hawk, JSR, Space Channel 5, Powerstone 2, Third Strike, Soul Calibur, Phantasy Star Online...Nintendo had to take Sonic to keep their bullshit on life support and their competing console would not have outsold the Dreamcast if it weren't for him.

Shen Mue was mind blowing. Probably responsible for Gen-X and Millennial being full of so many weebs though
>>
>>750167193
why is it on the floor
>>
the only thing I know about dreamcast is I didn't even want one as a kid, and my parents were rich.

I remember going to FYE and they just had entire stacks of dreamcast near the front of the store, like a whole wall of them and I never once asked mom or dad if I could buy one because I wanted the PS2 which is what they got me.
>>
>>750167193
>Was it really that impressive in 1998?
yes. just because it was impressive on a technical level at release doesn't mean it was competitive in the market.
>>
>>750168083
half life 2 was also mind blowing. but no one gives a fuck about it now.

source engine legacy is so impactful its still felt today
>>
yes - it was the biggest graphically leap at the time, with 60fps standard and arcade ports which was unheard of. ignoring it got eventually eclipsed by the ps2 years later being mostly arcade ports was its demise since it's all shallow crap
>>
>>750167193
Eternal contrarians thinking it was good because no one else had it and they played those 5 games (that's the entire dreamcast library btw) no one else got to
>>
>>750167193
It started the next console gen. Dreamcast was doing 480p while PS1/N64 were still doing 240p. Graphics looked arcade quality @ 60fps while the last gen was shit quality @ 15fps.
>>
>>750167193
it was the last unique console before everything became a PS2 clone.
>>
>>750167193
it was shit, and it flopped, which means contrarians now get to like it
>>
>>750167193
It was high tech for the time it came out, since VMU was very innovative for the time as a second screen and the ability to take it out and use it on the go for possible ingame perks like Chao Garden and other mini games was a nice bonus perk for what was basically a memory card at the time. Add in the high quality of the games as >>750168581 said since everything basically ran arcade quality around 60 fps and it having a lot of exclusives at the time that weren't on PS1 or N64 due to the hardware and Sega's unique relationship with Japanese devs and licenses at the time.
>>
>>750168581
Dreamcast/Bleem is why emulation is legal.
>>
>>750167193
Why do you care? Go play with your own toys zoomer.

>>
>>750167193
It was innovative for its time but also felt like a downgrade in some like how the console and controller felt cheaper than with the Saturn. Graphically it was way ahead and having a small screen in your controller was cool until you realized it held barely more save files than a PS1 memory card and wasn't very useful at all for the overall experience. The ability to play online was a cool option but nobody I know was willing to pay a subscription free to play a worse version of Q3 Arena. VGA and 480p support was cool but also came with caveats like not all games not supporting it and needing a VGA box, again I knew nobody that used this feature and only learned of progressive scan support after the fact.

yeah i guess the dreamcast i got and the games are fake too
fucking retarded underage
>>
>>750167193
>Cutting edge hardware
>Said hardware was only in benefit of games instead of graphicwhoring
>Finally perfect arcade conversions
>Chunky polygons
>Nice side features
>Diverse game line up
It was low key peak but the damage the ps mindset had done to gaming was creeping out
>>
>>750167361
I've only played it through an emulator but it has some really good games and a lot of soul
>>
>>750169028
The Japs fucking hated the Dreamcast because it killed the popular Saturn. The US launch was more successful, but at that point the PS2 was less than 6 months away from its Japan launch. At that point it was over, it would've needed more time to establish itself a good set of games before the technically more impressive PS2 entered the ring.

>binger mad because for once the topic is not pedotendo
Calm down faggot.
Its SEGA KINOcast for a reason
>>
>>750167193
Because it really is a great console. It mainly failed on account of three things: no DVD support, retarded controller design, and being released after the Saturn killed Sega’s relevancy.
>>
>>750167193
Mine was $50 and is exceptional on my CRT TV. Easy to burn new games for it too. Native hardware has held up very well.
>>
>>750167193
It was a reasonably powerful system with a decent library (if you like shmups). There was a lot of chaff along with the wheat, though. Faggots really like Shenmue, even though it's a tedium simulator with all the shit people claim to hate today like QTEs and bad fucking acting. For me it's:
>Seaman
>Gunbird 2 (with DC exclusive Morrigan)
>Border Down
>Radirgy
>Cannon Spike
>Chaos Field
>Under Defeat
>Mars Matrix
>Giga Wing (not 2, though)
There's probably some others I'm forgetting (BUT NOT TREASURE SHIT, FAGGOTS). It had a mainly niche library, but if you liked that niche, it was gold.

Napple Tale, Zombie Revenge, Spider-Man and D2 were amazing

I have D-2, but I never got around to playing it. I heard it's in no way related to the first one.

>Was it really that impressive in 1998?
It was, yeah. I have a strong memory of walking into the local game store and seeing Soul Calibur being demoed on a big TV and just having my jaw hit the floor.

Dreamcast was mid at best. Didn't have internet at the time, so no idea how online play was. But by the time ps2 was released, dreamcast was an afterthought at best.
>>
>>750170753
>But by the time ps2 was released, dreamcast was an afterthought at best
This is how it went and considering that time difference was 13 months it's no wonder some people learned of the Dreamcast only after the fact.

>Didn't have internet at the time, so no idea how online play was.
Better than now.
