You know what genuinely confuses me? People fucking love SM64, and many consider it to be one of the best 3D platformers in existence to this day.

It has solid movement, a few tiny powerup and great level design, that's it. Why THE FUCK does literally every modern 3D platformer need like 5 gimmicks stacked on top of each other?
>>
To justify their developer's inflated salaries.
>>
It's mostly a crutch. If you want simplistic gameplay to be good, it needs to be polished. Modern devs can't or don't want to do that, so they drown it in noise.
>>
>>750167440
"hardcore" fans like the pure movement stuff
general fans like gimmicks and spectacle so you get games like galaxy instead
>>

>"hardcore" fans like the pure movement stuff
That's the issue with OPs analysis. Do people love SM64? Sure, but who are those people who are playing it in 2026? Not normalfags willing to open their wallets, that's for sure.
>>
>>750167607
I'ts moreso that when making something simple you need to do something thats both fun, and unique. Many modern gamedevs currently seem to just combine elements from other games that dont fit cohesively and call it a day.
>>
>>750168010
It's wild man. Steam next fest is like 90% slop or "what if X game + Y game in either pixel or low poly graphics".

3D WAS the gimmick.
>>

Every star in 64 has at least three ways to reach it. The obvious method (running up Bob-Omb Mountain and jumping over rolling balls), the expert method (Owless Method, et al), and the what-fucking-deranged-lunatic-would-think-to-do-this method (BLJ, not dropping the penguin off the ledge).
You want a truly terrific game, all you do is set a goal and tell the player to figure it out for themselves because you don't care how they get there. But modern devs only know eat yellow paint chips and DEI.
>>
>>750167440
To me it's not confusing and I think SM64 is accurately rated as one of the best. It's a bit rough around the edges due to being dated but I think in design theory it's basically perfect.
>>
>>750167440
Mario 64 is amazing until you go upstairs. I refuse to collect all of the stars again.

>People fucking love SM64
No, they don't. Some dedicated autists love it, but the average Mario fans mostly just engages with the memes surrounding it and doesn't really care for its outdated controls and simplistic maps. You hardly ever see anyone list it as their favorite 3D Mario, much less 3D platformer.

It's like how Melee is conventionally agreed to be the best Smash game yet if you asked the average player most would probably rank it below Brawl and Ultimate.
>>
>>750169392
Then perhaps you could elaborate
>>
Developers hate the idea of giving players actual movement since even casuals will be able to expose their "walls are merely a suggestion" levels. And to their credit Mario 64 style levels would probably look bizarre with current visual fidelity. Hardware limits and not being burdened with current dev concerns will likely keep it unique while everyone stabs at gimmicks to make up for unsatisfying movement.
>>
>>750169671
I'm probably Brawl's biggest fan and if anyone ever told me that Brawl is better than Melee I would beat them with a rock.
>>
>>750169680
>Why THE FUCK does literally every modern 3D platformer need like 5 gimmicks stacked on top of each other?
This is what confuses OP, the thing you replied to was context for why he asked that question. The underlying implication is that SM64 is beloved and simplistic and many modern games are far more complex and less liked.
>>
>>750167440
>many consider it to be one of the best 3D platformers in existence to this day.

Children do anon.
That's essentially it.
Croc legend of the gobbos sold just as well multi plat as mario64

Work on your syntax. Seperating your thoughts into needless paragraphs suggests this is what you found confusing: People fucking love SM64, and many consider it to be one of the best 3D platformers in existence to this day.

You illiterate retard, OP is saying modern games add a bunch of shit that wasn't necessary while 64 kept things simple.
>>
>>750167440
Nintendo makes it look easy but most devs aren't good enough to make simple games like this work.

It's a fucking miracle that SM64 is as good as it is. You would expect the first 3D game to be trash

it's basically only good because they focused on making movement fun before anything else. the level design and objectives aren't anything special, but moving mario from A to B is inherently fun
>>
>>750170881
I mean, if they had designed it like 2D Mario it probably would have been trash at the time
The sandbox works with the new movement
>>
>>750167440
It's actually crazy how no one designs the movement for a game before they design the game anymore.
>>
>>750169930
See, that's kind of my point. People who think like you probably outnumber actual Melee fans at this point.

A lot of platformers copy Mario 64's movement and then build a game around it
The issue is that they do it completely wrong, pic related

Brawl has Subspace. Melee does not have Subspace.

westerners think theyre geniuses by coming up with theories and #-based step process for everything that sounds convincing to other midwits, which all ends up in a boring soulless product

Because games are focus tested on women. They tell the publisher that they want more gimmicks. The publisher goes back to the dev and says "put more gimmicks in".

If they don't do what they're told they don't get paid.
