In 2010 PC gaming was such a small niche market everyone assumed it was dead or going to die. PC gamers even had to make petitions in order to get games ported to PC.

Today PC gaming completely dwarfs console gaming to the point that console gaming is the niche and often an afterthought.

What changed?

exclusives are all crap. it wasn't like that
>>
>>750180364
PC gaming was always a giant cornerstone of the industry. Ever since World of Warcraft in '04.
>>
>>750180364
PC gaming simply isn't distinct from console gaming anymore. Your average nuPC gamer would recoil in terror at the thought of having to use a server browser.
>>

What’s the best way to get a 5090 without paying these absurd prices? Does anyone ever do a good sale worth waiting for? Buy one used? Steal one?

>What changed?

I know what changed, and it's because I was alive before the 21st century. What changed was Gabe Newell and his platform.
>hey guys i made this game
>its free
>you can play it as long as you want
and everyone who didn't want to play it would just buy the other games. I suppose WoW was a reason too. WoW has been around two decades, and it's still a PC exclusive.
>>
>>750180491
I will never understand why this board is so obsessed with exclusives.

Even at the start of the xbox 360/ps3 gen I feel like the only one which really truly mattered was Halo, and by half way through COD, FIFA, GTA were definitely the dominant games. The others were stuff which might have been fun but no one really cared about

For XBOX ONE/PS4 and the current gen practically all the most popular games have been multiplatform. Here are the current top 10 for PS5.
>>
PC gaming was always big, just not as big as consoles back then.
Microsoft tried to kill it with Vista, GFWL, poaching devs to Xbox and paying journalists and even devs to say that the platform was dead.
They failed and now their console division is the biggest failure even when trying to buyout the competition.

>What changed
Cheap hardware, ease of use, internet tutorials and Valve providing a good service.
Plus everyone uses a PC for work these days.

It's not about the quality of the games, it's about feeling special.
And consolefags, especially the brand loyal ones from here, most of which 30/40 year olds tha came from shitholes like Gamefaqs and NeoGaf back in the day, are very special!
>>
>>750180859
>It's not about the quality of the games, it's about feeling special.

I never considered that, but you're right.
>I'm the only one that can play Mario :)
It's shit, though.
>y-you just think that because you can't play it
whatever dude
>>
>>750180958
Vidya dev back then was chaotic and good games were usually lightning in a bottle, an exclusive also meant (usually) that the devs had the tech support of the console publisher which made it less hectic to work around the proprietary quirks of those older consoles running completely unique hardware.

Usually it turned out good, but many times you had mediocrity or even shit.
Same as multiplats, which were usually made by third party developers focused on one platform and later ported to everything else with mixed results since all of these machines were very different.

Nowadays every console runs on the same hardware architecture with the same games and possibilities.

Brand loyalty and marketing is what brought this mental illness though, not the quality of the games themselves.

does yall niggas deadass fit you're pcs with rainbow LGBT lights and glass panels? the pc configurator of my local gaming pc selling site wouldnt let me pick a case without a glasspanel so i had to order all the parts myself together with a mesh panel case from fractal and assembly the thang myself

Oh yeah PC gaming is super healthy, people just love paying more than what a car costs to play the exact same games as console but on a shitty little monitor instead of a TV
>>

This loser can't even drive lmao

>What changed?
Consoles were a dead paradigm in the early 2000s already, the only problem with PC was that publishers were bad at selling games to customers, so they blamed their failure on PC. It didn't help that Microsoft was actively ruining the PC ecosystem with GFWL, Xinput, DLC, etc..
The publishers have since then taken a back seat to Steam, GOG, and so on who are good at selling games. Microsoft is also being systematically removed from gaming on PC, whereas on consoles Microsoft has set almost all the standards like paid online, shit controllers, etc..
>>
>>750180364
It's not like it matters since no one will be able to buy a gaming PC ever again.
>>
>>750181525
>the exact same games
love this consolecuck cope
yes, there's no difference between your bare minimum shitbox and a $2k pc
only if you ignore the performance that is
>>
>>750181615
They could have had both platforms but completely abandoned one out of hubris, neglect and stupidity and then lost their leading role on the other plaform by doing the same.

I fucking love how Microsoft got absolutely gaped after doing it's very best to fuck gaming up for pocket change.
I hope that Xbox goes under and that every Sharma loving Xbrown is covered in cow feces.

60fps vs fake placebo frames, well worth paying 10 times the price!

>hardware was so cheap that people could build a PC stronger than a console at almost the same price
>PC building became so streamlined that it became as easy as "building legos"
>Steam only kept increasing in popularity, so console exclusivity started dying as companies also began releasing their games on PC
>rise of PC youtubers who would shill new components, cases, GPUs and such while bragging about how superior PC gaming was compared to consoles
>PC gaming pretty much became a status symbol: the more RGB and "gamer" your PC looked, the more popular you would be online

It's such a shame that everything went downhill so fast once people began buying GPUs en masse for crypto farming, since then GPU prices never recovered and now we're one year into the RAMpocalypse with no signs of RAM and SSD prices going down anytime soon, all while Nvidia looks more than ready to abandon the consumer GPU market entirely while both them and Xbox are shilling cloud gaming subscriptions.

I was extremely lucky to have finished my build halfway through last year, because things are not getting better anytime soon. Better take good care of your machine, and you should also keep an emergency fund if a component ever breaks.

Yeah, Zelda is definitely better than Mario. I don't know who Mario is for. Have a look at this highly popular series.
>you're a guy running around with sword and shield, exploring, and killing stuff
I wonder where they got the idea.
Whereas Mario is some brainrot shit with catchy music and satisfying sounds. That's why the fans end up so messed up.

Xbox and PS4 are X86-64 (the 64 part meaning it can address over the 4GB of RAM) architecture. Consoles died with the PS3 and Wii U

>SNES had Mode 7 and SuperFX.
>Saturn had Hitachi SH-2. Dreamcast had Hitachi SH-4 and only console ever created that supports automatic order independent alpha blending.
>PS2 had Kutaragi's Emotion Engine. PS3 had Kutaragi's CELL.
>N64 and PS2 similar MIPS architecture
>Dreamcast had SH-4 and only console ever created that supports automatic order independent alpha blending
>>
>>750182602
Yep, now you get a locked down PC with less functionality and mediocre software.
>>
>>750180364
No one thought that in 2010, PC gaming was "dying" in the 90s due to piracy but then Steam showed that most people only care about convenience and it's been thriving ever since.

Twitch streamers, youtube content creators catering towards kids

What changed? Minecraft and Roblox came out lol. I remember being on the playground elementary school in '09 and we were even talking about minecraft then. It was the first 'killer app' on PC that kids actually gave a shit about, plus it could run on fairly shit computers.

Roblox came out in 06 and took awhile to get off the ground but Minecraft's popularity helped. There are 115,000+ people in Bloxfruits (shitty roblox one piece anime game) right now at 2am est that's just one game
>>
>>750180712
>I will never understand why this board is so obsessed with exclusives.
why else would you buy a console
>>
>>750180364
2011 you had Skyrim which had its modding community blow up for years.
>>
>>750184576
Obviously not for exclusives, considering barely anyone is actually playing them.

The biggest games are all multiplats/ports of PC games and its been that way for at least a decade now.

>>750180803

When I used to have one it was just a fun way to play stuff like COD with the biggest differentiator being which one your friends had. Sure some games were exclusives but it was definitely the slim minority and most the popular ones weren't.

Switch is the obvious exception.

So considering that bascally everyone has a gaming PC and no one plays on console, why is the economy doing so well? Do PC prices need to increase even more to cooll down the explosive surge in demand?
>>
>>750186216
>why is the economy doing so well?
I have no idea. The people with money must be spending it. However, there's also the obvious explanation of
>times are bad
>people are being more careful about spending
>which means gaming would become even more profitable
If people are staying home instead of going on holidays, what are they going to do? TV shows, movies, and gaming.
I saw that article about how Steam had their best year ever. That means gaming is completely protected from economic downturns.

>Do PC prices need to increase even more to cooll down the explosive surge in demand?
If prices go too high, then nobody will be buying. In fact, it'll probably push people to consoles. What did I do when my PC died? I plugged in my PS4.
>>
>>750186216
>why is the economy doing so well?
it's not
stocks are a smokescreen for inflation
>>
>>750181407
It's genuinely a humiliation ritual. The whole point is that you cannot just buy a normal computer that doesn't have all the rainbow shit, so it's designed to look stupid to everyone remotely normal to discourage them from thinking about it.
>>
>>750188389
You know you can just set the color to black or just disable them right? For me it reminds me of the really warm night light that almost caught my blankie on fire. I would pour water on it to cool it down
>>
>>750180364
and yet every game is still made for consoles first and backported to PC. GTA VI is still going to be a timed console exclusive.
PC will never regain its glory from the 90s. Game streaming will take over before that happens.
