>2000-2015>a single developer was able to ship atleast 1 game every year but often 2 or 3 released>the games were polished and optimised>a publisher could easly space out the year with over 10 releases>budgets would get allocated correctly to games according to the type of market reach it has>a game would get anounced and it would take 1 or 2 years for it to release, sometimes they would even release the same year>if a game spends more than 4 years without any information or trailers since announcement people would rightfully assume its vaporware or cancelled>Developers worked hard, but hard work was expected of you in the industry like how overtime is expected in the service industry or continues work for months on a tanker>2016 hits>tons of articles hit the scene condemning crunch culture>tons of unknown developers suddenly come out of the woodwork to back the articles up>they get their way and crunch slowly disappears from the average game studio>2017 and beyond>game studios have inflated employee counts 10 folds>games development time takes about 6-10 years now>games release in buggy states, feature incomplete or just straight up broken>budgets have increased astronomicly >all kinds of positions have been endlessly stretched beyond all measure, making pointless roles in the company such as community HR manager or creative narrative lead>a publisher is lucky to push out 2 games in a year now>because of this these 2 games have to be the most safe, by numbers, test audience approved games one can think off>one flop is enough to topple a entire game studio or even publisher Bioware is the latest example of thisin the period of 2006 to 2012 they were able to push out the entire Mass Effect trilogy and expansions, Dragon Age 1&2 and even Star Wars TORNow in the same timeframe they were barely in the beginning stage of development for a game they announced in 2020
The loss of crunch in the industry is what is going to eventually kill it.The industry has created a cushy new culture were you can sit around for years vibing and writing down ideas before actually working on a game, working at a studio today might as well be the most expensive adult daycare on the planet.Publishers and developers should have stood their ground and told these journos that if you cant stand the culture then fuck off.
>>750187123>in the period of 2006 to 2012 they were able to push out the entire Mass Effect trilogy and expansions, Dragon Age 1&2 and even Star Wars TORall dogshit I'm overjoyed that they're finally fucking dead and hamburger helper will starve to death
>>750187123You can have crunch, but you need to pay full overtime.Or if management and execs weren't retards, the game would be made on a proper schedule where there is no crunch.Either way crunch is shareholder supremacy cancer so it's inherently bad.
>>750187413>You can have crunch, but you need to pay full overtime.cool it with the antisemetism
No, all it needs is competence and scoping. At no point do you need more than 30 people working on a game.
Crunch never disappeared What happens now is that developers sit in their asses for almost a decade and then put in work like a few years before launchNaughty dog is currently doing it for that Intergalactic game
>>750187382>thinks bioware's peak was "all dogshit">is a fucking retardchecks out
>>750187123Mass Effect trilogy sucked ass because EA forced them to finish it too quickly.Bad example.
Yeah those quick games where all hits. Like Dragon Age 2. That game was clearly finished and not just the same dungeon copy pasted 20 times.
>>750187123People, specifically men, were expected to give 120% all the time in their professions for centuries and have no regard for their physical and mental health.Health is a currency and resource you spend in order to get things done and get proper results. Men were expected to die in their mid-50s; that's why things like retirement or pensions weren't a thing for centuries. When you had used up your health, you had used up your reason to live and just... died. By then, you had married, procreated, and provided your family with the resources they needed to grow into independence and society with profits, goods, and services. You had fulfilled your purpose. That's why the biggest leap in prosperity and progress was possible from the mid/late 19th century to the 1950s (with the first signs of corruption showing in the 1920s), when men were expected and required to spend all of their energy to get proper shit done and didn't waste time and energy on useless crap and nonsense. But when women and the left weaseled, lied, and cheated their way into power, everything turned to shit, and it keeps getting worse and worse. Just imagine what would be possible today with today's level of technology and the work ethic of the golden age.
Nintendo is proof of the opposite. They've gotten rid of crunch entirely over the past decade, to the point where multiple first-party games have been delayed by years, such as Animal Crossing.Despite this, we're getting more first-party Nintendo titles per year than either Sony or Microsoft put out per generation. The Switch 2 alone currently has more exclusives than the PS4 and PS5 combined despite the latter being a decade and a half old. And that's every year, not just some fluke years.
>>750188107>Men where better when they worked themselves to death for their jew overlords
>>750187981I hope hamburger helper sees this bro
>>750188148realistically with how many studios Microsoft owns they should be taking up half the releases of a single year but at best they can push out like 4 games in a entire yearthe amount of mismanagemend in this industry needs to be studied
>>750188148Personally I always do my best when i'm tired, stressed, hate my job, and know that the second it's done I will get fired. It's a real motivator to go the extra mile.
>>750187123the issue with Crunch is that it went from "we're 2 weeks from the deadline and we need to make sure everything is properly polished" to "management has taken your estimate of 6 months and told the CEO you can do it in 3 instead, good luck fuckers" That's why it got a bad name, the crunch time never ended and it only existed because of management fuckups and it burned out a lot of passionate people who moved on to other industries that weren't as fucktarded about it like say, the financial sector Because seriously, I need someone who's pro-crunch to explain me how it's possible financial sector software manages to have only a fraction of the level of crunch as videogames, when the former is drastically more important
>>750188074Dragon Age 2 was alot more finished than shit like Mass Effect Andromeda
>>750187123You are delusional, the industry lost people who gave a single fuck about the game they were making, when you crunch jeets you get gta defective edition
I miss the time Rockstar was a actual publishing powerhouse and had all of its studios work individually
>>750187931The worst part is that these people THINK they are working. In reality they are spinning wheels and pushing pencils. I've seen real competent office workers; they certainly deserve a damn good pay cuz those guys are never off work cuz overseas people can and will do business without regard to time zones, which means overtime is impossible to calculate.
>>750188148well you see, Nintendo is a company where an almost bafflingly large amount of top level functions are filled by people who rose through the ranks rather than simply putting nepo-baby MBA's in those roles
>>750188148People tend to forget the very first thing Nintendo did when they acquired Monolith Soft wasn't talk to them about games, but to send a team of accountants over to tard wrangle them on how to properly budget their time and money since they had a reputation for going over budget and being late. And look at how that strategy paid off given Monolith Soft is a premier dev team in gaming now.
>muh crunchWhy does a AAAA game have a 10+ year dev cycle now if poor, oppresed devs are crunching all the time?Someone here is lying.
>>750188346Also Nintendo believes in stakeholder supremacy and not the parasitic shareholder supremacy that is the norm for capitalism, and is a major reason why video games are shit and why Nintendo is the only company thriving still.Remember they fought off share holders that wanted them to go third party, go full mobile games or get out of game entirely so their shareholders could earn more equity.
>>750188353There's other stories like that, like say Retro Studios Before MP1 they were a disorganized mess of a dozen different quarter-finished projects that never were going to go anywhereNintendo forced them to focus on one thing at a time, set realistic goals and deadlines and we got multiple great hits out of them in a row (though then things kinda ended, still not sure what happened)
>>750188284>when you crunch jeets you get gta defective editionthere was no absolutely no crunch involved in GTA defective edition, that is simply the result of hiring jeets to do any work, you give jeets a infinite amount of time and money and they will still make a dogshit productlook at the entire fiasco of the Prince of Persia SOT remake
>>750188437Or Silicon Knights, their only two good games, Eternal Darkness and Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, were done under Nintendo's whip. The moment they went third party we got Too Human and bomb after bomb until the company folded.
>>750187123The whole issue boils down to game companies scaling and the usual Crunch Culture not being ethical to an institutionalized conglomerate version of the games business. And Jason Schreier's entire perspective is pro-corporates, pro-usury (the stock market is debt that goes to Israel, just look, they subsidized NVIDIA) and the only way to gain the worldwide consent of governments to run businesses at scale is to make the workflow institutionalized (schools -> work pipelines) and other pedantic shit that makes taxpayers say yes to nationalize and pour national funds into businesses, and not attack them with NGOs etc.So basically if you eliminated Crunch and shat out mediocre AAA woke games, you'd get tonnes of money to Israel, and the machine would keep going forever, and "they" want that, whereas gamers want games that you give a shit about and not just a "pop music" machine like the music business turned into or absolute schlock like Hollywood eventually also became.
>>7501883869 out of those 10 years are spend doing>sitting in team calls>team gatherings>browsing pinterest for ideas>team bonding days>team training days>pushing your pencil around>drinking coffee>collecting a paycheckthen the last few years are when you actually need to work

>>750187123>2000-2015>the games were (...) and optimisedI brought out my old 360 and shiiit man playing Sonic Unleashed, and the High Moon Transformers games ran like ass. Constant frame drops when something exciting happens or when there's 5 enemies on screen. Though, I don't disagree with the feeling you're describing, OP. Seeing Transformers Reactivate sit in the oven between 2017 to 2025 (7ish years) when High Moon could make 3 games more substantial than that in like 4 years really fucking says a lot.
>>750187123Crunch has always been retarded and is in no way the same thing as overtime in the service industry. If the retards in management actually knew what the fuck they were doing then they wouldn't need crunch at all as they would be running the show in a way that allows for iteration and time management at the same time, IMO it should look something like this:>One mega team that consist of all the devs in the studio that only does market research, iterative design and asset creation>People are rotated in and out of it as needed and they work "normal" hours with no overtime (9-5) but they are free to work longer out of their on volition an might get small perks to encourage them to work longer (free food/snacks, in-house rest area, access to a digital "library" of al kinds of media, etc)>This mega team essentially exists as the creative engine for the entire studio>Once a few ideas from this team has been settled and tested by the mega team, the most appropriate team members are picked from it and placed in smaller team(s)>Said smaller team(s) then start working on getting said ideas polished and buttoned up for release as a finished product>These smaller teams gets paid overtime (up to a limit) and have a strict time frame/budget to get the thing out the door>People for the mega team helps these smaller teams as needed with asset creation and iterative testing>If things aren't done before the time/budget runs out then another internal support team (formed from the mega team) is called in to force the game into a playable state and out the door in a 6 month time frame together with the original small team
>>750187123Crunch has nothing to do with it.Games are much higher quality today than previously. Proper voice acting, mocap, higher-quality textures, much more polish, etc. Also, in the year of our Lord 2026, every big studio is required to have huge HR departments and other bloat that they didn't previously. Also, previously, companies were filled with white autistic men who enjoyed their work with a passion. Now it is white women who just use it as feminist daycare
>>750188386because the top level morons demand the entire game be scrapped and redone to fit [CURRENT TREND] 5 times over the course of a single dev cycle and the grunts at the bottom have to find a way to make it happen Every single big flop in the past decade has been the result of top level decisions, the only time the base level work is genuinely crap is if it's outsourced to indians, but the decision to do so is ALSO A TOP LEVEL DECISION a lot of the technical details of Concord were decent, there were a good number of skilled people working on it who did their jobs as well as anyone could reasonably expect, but none of that can save a game where the inherent concept is awful

>>750188550>t, but none of that can save a game where the inherent concept is awfulthing is in the past, when a developer revealed a game and obviously saw what they revealed didnt click with the audience or just didnt work in concept, it wasnt too late to go back ton the drawing board and try something different, at most you'd get like 2 years of extra dev timenowadays a single can have the entire studios budget riding on it, getting it to the stage of even having a reveal trailer would already cost millions of dollars and years of dev timethe sunk cost in making a game is so large that devs cant afford starting over, they have to ride out what they have and HOPE people eventually ''warm up to it''

>>750187123Crunch or lack thereof isn't the problem and anyone who thinks it is is fucking retarded. Here's the real progression of things:>early devstudios had devs who would willingly crunch because most of them were a bunch of nerds who liked what they were working on>this resulted in good games>these studios were then bought by big publishers, who expected them to keep this output while being saddled with projects the staff had less investment in>employees who can't handle forced crunch leave>those who remain burn out, get lazy, and are fired>new staff is brought in to replace old staff>new staff has even LESS investment in the tools and projects, and half the time they get fired at the end of projects anyways to make some numbers on a sheet higher>game quality takes a nosedive because nobody understands or cares about what they're working on and is constantly stressed by the need to be in perpetual jobhunting mode since no position is ever stable except for C-suite management>studio is shuttered>vampiric publishing houses move on and C-suite management has 20 golden parachutes in reserveHalf of the reason Jap studios haven't had nearly as massive of a quality loss compared to Western ones is because Jap work culture values (for better or worse) staying at the same company until the day you die, which is good for a creative industry because it gives employees time to learn and experiment instead of being shuffled around between random engines/studios/the employement line every couple years regardless of whether or not they make something good.Saying>MUH GAMES ARE BAD BECAUSE DEVS DONT CRUNCH NOWis both comically wrong (crunch is absolutely still around and still sucks cock) and completely ignores the rancid work culture that results in poor games to begin with.

>>750189920>wtf why arent our games selling now?
>>750187123Crunch is just incompetent management and long dev times are due to incompetent management as well. The videogame industry needs smaller development teams without hyperfocused specializations to cut down on incompetent management. Once you raise employee counts over 40, game development starts to suffer and employees create garbage work. It's a feedback loop that keep bringing in more management, more specialized teams, more consultants and more approval boards, all of which bring down efficiency and either duplicate or delete work.>>750187313>Yes I would like to increase my workforce by a few % by forcing them to work excessive overtimeWith their decreased efficiency you may as well replace them with more drunk slavs.Crunch exists to make a manager look good when he overpromises shit that he can't deliver.

>>750188862>It improves the "experience".How the fuck does that improve my experience?400GB hand textures that i can only appreciate if plaster my face infront of a 8K monitor?Mocap? oh yeah seeing Debra Wilson in dozens of games these days really improves my immersion.fuck off with mocap, id rather they bring back actual character animators wich are probably 100 times cheaper than having to license a bunch of mocap equipment from Hollywood

>>750189171being hands off with a bunch of scammers doesnt help eitherNigga hired Double Fine right after the Broken Age scam and acted surprised when they made almost nothing while slurping up budget
>>750189345Upper managers who "accidentally" cause crunch do so becauase it's a viable strategy for them. The Dragon Age dude talked favorably about it and his strategies for it, saying that when you're not in crunch mode, there's a habit to work slow and also not really escalate the tasks you're working on, so then you underdeliver and fall behind schedule, and once you go in crunch and tell people we have to work fast towards a strict deadline it creates what he calls "completion-urgency". A mode of stress where the employees set aside their regular habits for chatting with people outside of work or constantly calling their family member on extra breaks, or fiddling around with the same texture past their agreed deadlines, and instead they go "it needs to coalesce, it needs to be delivered to the other guys, I'm falling behind fuck fuck fuck" and that's when people across the whole studio begin to actually haul ass and put things together as a game. And when you're not enforcing that their mentality becomes lazy, and you can do many things to remind them of the urgency, but nothing actually creates urgency but telling people "it's too late".
Crunch is how you lose skilled workers.
It wasn't even crunch that enabled that, it was having a solid core of nerd devs with a vision for the video game they wanted to make and with minimal managerial bloat holding the process up. You can get shit down in 2 years if you just make game->get game to market.now you have to have 7 years of managerial bureaucracy and 12 layers of "DIDN'T YOU FORGET TO ASK SOMEONE" that makes it impossible. make game->fuckheads->DEI grifter layer->more fuckheads->more DEI grifter layer->more fuckheads->some faggot named grJeremy->EVEN MORE FUCKHEADS->EVEN MORE DEI RACKEETERS->get game to market

Cyberpunk2077 worked on PC. the deprecated last-gen consoles were just too weak to run the game. Fault was on cdred for refusing to admit they should've just cut the weak last-gen consoles and focused on PC first, then current-gen consoles, and just not even tried to get it to on old-gen consoles.
Devs should go back to low-poly.There's really nothing wrong with it.
>>750188107>Just imagine what would be possible today with today's level of technology and the work ethic of the golden age. You're describing Japan. It's not helping them dig out of their recession.
>going overbudget>going way beyond normal scheduleswhy is this so normal in the videogame industry but any other field of work this would look like a huge management problem that would need to be solved
>>750196056The government
Games used to be simpler to be made and required far less budget. Which enabled more people to work on many games, and even for games that fail to not completely close down their studio after a failure, people used to be able to learn from mistakes. Now you get instantly fired and the studio imploding. This is also against players too, the common player WILL be mad if a game isn't using "state of the art graphics" which cost a lot of time, money and people. Notice how so many people use the "it looks like a PS3/PS4" game as an insult. The industry is now overbloated in budget, extremely risky to work in yet also punish games that often are not generic enough, with less and less respect for the developers (including by the suits in charges with golden parachutes) and more and more demanding players. And the worst thing is that it's likely impossible to go back on this.
Not sure what /v/ is saying here, if anything there's MORE crunch now and even more devastating ones than in the past.Hell, at least in the past it was only during a few weeks or month at worse. Nowadays you get some crunch for YEARS.

What makes them think crunch is a metric?
The reason why video games have bad conditions is the same reason holywood will always feature producers and directors fucking young actresses for favors.People have a mad romantic fervor for working in the industry, creating a surplus of people trying to get in, which drives the leverage of people looking for work into the mud.Every abused worker has two to take their place if they say no and quit. It's the market at work.
>>750187123>>the games were polished and optimizedNo. That was not common at all. Your basic premise is wrong.
>>750188107>man, wouldn't it be better if everyone died in middle age you're a retard
>>750188107>Men were expected to die in their mid-50s; that's why things like retirement or pensions weren't a thing for centuries. No, that's because basic hygeine is barely a concept until late 19th centuries.
>>750188642Presentation is half the appeal of a game.A game looking good increases the amount of enjoyment you get out of the gameplay because things that look nice feel nicer to play.
>>750192465>patient 0 for the moment journos started attacking consumersDid you forget the ME 3 ending controversy in 2012? That was when the entitlement narrative first hit critical mass.
>>750187123>2000-2015>a single developer was able to ship atleast 1 game every year but often 2 or 3 released>the games were polished and optimised>a publisher could easly space out the year with over 10 releases>budgets would get allocated correctly to games according to the type of market reach it has>a game would get anounced and it would take 1 or 2 years for it to release, sometimes they would even release the same yearThe fuck is this fantasy land bullshit?
>>750189872>>750189045>>750187123Anyone that thinks older developers were better than modern ones is a retard.Literally just look at any of the modern games that guys like Raph Koster, Warren Spector, Tim Sweeny, Tim Schafer, etc. have produced over the last 20 years. They weren't more competent. They were luckier to have been born early.
Crunch or lack of crunch isn't the problem, most of these dipshits in the modern industry could never make a good game, insufficient time is not the issue.
>>750191995>>750190993Nintendo released a few remakes or remastere of older Zelda games and multiple Zelda spin off games. Acting like there was nothing at all between BOTW and TOTK is just stupid.
>>750194660what is the lore of these guys?
Crunch is a tool of shitty managers. If you're for crunch you're actually endorsing some of the most useless, wasteful positions that have been increasingly bogging down the industry for 20 years
>>750192571>crybabiesI remember reading that staff would go and cry in the closet during Anthem. Obviously they hired too many mentally ill retards that were too detached from reality, which is common for Edmonton. Employee problem. For crunch itself it used to be a period where devs were trying to sneak cool bonus shit in a game and make a little something extra. Or they’d polish the game to the nth degree. Crunch just to complete the game is mismanagement and the lack of effective decision making being a management problem. Women in the industry was the big Jew lie that’s primary goal was to immediately double the workforce. Through this labour becomes much cheaper; however, you introduce indecision. A group of 5 bros collaborates seamlessly in seconds to complete things where women do not. Also a management problem. Now with Indian slop work being done real devs have to waste time fixing literal garbage. Management and employee problem. An even bigger problem is the use of consultants. Imagine the level of incompetence on display when you ever need to hire a cultural consultant. Now as we know woke devs try to force consultants on companies through cancel culture. They waste significant time and resources. The easiest solution is to contract all employees so they can’t unionize. Management and employee problem. HR departments need to be removed as it prevents the aforementioned 5 guys from just getting shit done. They also bias the hiring process towards mentally ill and technically inefficient employees through DEI (ie. the image of the girls at the office and the one dude that codes). Management problem that turns I to employee problem. ‘Managers’ are also a problem because most are just buzz word slinging retards with no actual talent or skills in of themselves. Management problem. Lest but not least is the media who in collusion with consultant subhumans and woke tards defend and create fake negative press for slander.
>>750189540Games hardware became obsolete way faster in the early 2000s and 2010s than today. Are you a child or a moron?
>>750197975>they took 6 years to put out a lazy rehash but that's fine because they took 2-3 years in between to put out remakes This would be called the death rattle of any other company
>>750190587RSR2 is the best game Rockstar ever made, so what is the problem?
>>750198625It would not be because that is one franchise of many instead of Nintendo's only franchise.Releasing several DLC, remakes and remasters, and spinoffs between two main installments of a franchise is literally better than normal for any studio that doesn't do yearly or biyearly releases.
>>750199093No it's not, you're only saying that because you've been affected by Nintendo's marketing machine
>>750187123Do you retards not realize crunch is happening even as you speak, and the biggest issue of shit not moving forward is because of middle management and C-Suite constantly making ass backwards decisions that require devs to just halt all immediate production and abandon it to start over multiple times in some new ass manner that corporate/shareholders think will make the maximum buck?Clearly we need to cut down on the amount of developers and artists and instead just hire MORE managers because clearly if there's 200 managers in a studio it means production goes up 200x, right??
>>750192753It absolutely would have.Myth 2 literally shipped with a bug that could delete your entire hard drive.Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is to this day basically unfinished and is a total buggy mess after 20 years of fan patches. Everything Troika released was like that.Morrowind is the same, an absolutely dysfunctional and broken mess of a game. And Bethesda's later releases have been the same.Same with every STALKER game, same with every Paradox GSG, same with every BioShock game, etc. What the fuck are you even talking about man?
>>750196056It is normal in every industry.
AI solves the crunch. AI solves everything these people bitch about except, of course, AI.
