How's that and which games has the best spear combat?
>>
cant think of one that does the spear justice. game devs are retards
>>
>>750190246
I certainly won't say best spear combat per se, but spears are a pretty great weapon category in Morrowind.
>>
>>750190842
Even in Morrowind it's pretty underused. Like no class has it as favored skill, except for Warrior who has all combat skills. And even then that class have it as a minor skill.
>>
>>750190246
Arent spears the meta in zomboid?
>>
>>750191175
Ehh, big whoop when you can make custom classes.
>>
>>750190246
Cus spears are a military formation weapon and as such are kinda ass in the 1v1.
Nobody carried a spear unless it was their job. Everyone who could afford it had a sword on their hip.
>>
>>750191243
Guess so, still it shows so little the devs thought about this weapon.
>>
>>750190246
That's the downside of being the "boring but effective" option.
Katanas on the other hand are a dogshit weapon that thrive in media solely due to style points.

Ancient Romans are to blame. All else being equal, spear + shield has moderate advantage over sword + shield. But the Romans used sword + shield and won anyway because of superior logistics and training (more important than weapon choice). Probably some morale boost from using more expensive weapons too.

Retards never fail to say this line. It's uncanny. Spears are incredibly good at duels.
>>
>>750195198
The Roman military was mostly cavalry and polearms. Historylets just like to focus on a specific type of shock troop and pretend it was the entire military or even a majority of it for some reason.

>>

Ah yes, the military that heavily featured spears to the point that it had the famous Hastati, an entire infantry division dedicated to that with a deeply autistic subdivision of different types of spears and javelins, is to blame for videogames supposedly not having enough spear combat.
>>
Gladiusfags are weird. It's like they don't know that by the 3rd century AD that Rome completely phased out swords as primary weapons and everyone used spears instead (again). And that the gladius was never the primary weapon used by the majority of Rome's military not even during gladiusfag's precious Marian reforms (which they still don't really know anything about and keep asserting that it was a reform to make everyone use a gladius).

Spears were "king of the battlefield" because they were extremely useful in formation with other spear wielders.
When you're fighting all by yourself (as in 99% of video games) a sword is better.
>>

That isn't true. At all. Polearms are extremely adept at 1v1 or 1vMany fights.

99â„… of the time you want to stab with a spear. Obvious, right? Yet even in games like Morrowind or Mount & Blade that feature spears, 3/4 of your attack directions are swinging the damn thing like Little John with down syndrome.

>>750190694

>>750191267

>>

Spears were often used for swinging, not just thrusting. That's why most of them have heads with sharp edges and not just a sharp point.
>>

Solid logic, little John. I guess knicking the enemy is just as good as piercing his heart to you. See you at the battlefield!

Polearms have enormous kinetic energy when swung. It's not going to be a knick. It's a fact that many spears were designed for both thrusting and slashing.

Alright /v/, name some of your favorite historical polearms

DESU my top favorite is probably the poleaxe, but I am obligated to draw attention to the many polearms used by Mesoamerican civilizations that never get features in anything because Mesoamerica is also almost never used in pop culture, and when it is people always exclusively focus on Macuahuitl
>>
>>750200568
The quarterstaff. It's not only the simplest weapon but also one of the most deadly. It was extremely popular during medieval times for not only sport but also combat. It was extensively featured in the tales of Robin Hood, even moreso than the bow. Probably the most underrated weapon in modern times.

>>750198236
Wrong
>>
>>750200737
Actually the Mesoamericans used quarterstaffs too, see pic, but it's not shown in >>750200568

Frankly it might be more of a baton then a full polearm length quarterstaff, but it's hard to say for sure because the proportions in codex depictions tend to be stylized and given inconsistent lengths and proportions. Like sometimes atlatl darts (which are projectiles) are depicted as if they're full length lances used for melee combat.

>>750200751
Is there a specific name for non-full-length polearms like this? Not necessarily the Goedendag in particular, but just any that have a shaft/handle longer then like a mace or club, but shorter than a spear. They show up in Mesoamerican warfare too and I'm not sure how to describe them as a result.

>>
>>750201289
I don't think there's a particular name for it as far as I'm aware. Usually it's on an individual basis. Like Black Bills were around 5 or maybe 6 feet while forest bills were 8 or 9 feet.
>>
Aoe2, steppe lancers have an extra range, throw cheap camels Infront of them to tank a bit and you have a cavalry shredder

Also a bunch of infantry units with the same thing gimmick of a 1 tile reach range
Again put cheap infantry units Infront of them and you get a group that just shreds through melee combatants cause you're fighting one row of units with 2 and the big damage dealers are bodyblocked by cheap inexpensive trash units
>>

>>
>>750190246
This is the kind of girls we could have had in the new fire emblem but IS to go full pozzed and and filled the game with browns
>>
I enjoyed spears in Chivalry, Total War Shogun 2 and Fire Emblem 7. Never really bothered with them in Morrowind except for early cheese. Warband/Bannerlord spears (not lances) are pretty good when on horseback for killing routing enemies. DS3 red hilted halberd is used like a spear 90% of the time and works great. BotW/TotK spears were fun to use for the multi-hit and then throw. Warband spear on foot was cancer.

Mostly the issue is a weapon that just stabs tends to be boring to use, and when they add slash you wish they didn’t.

1. In Morrowind's data files you have meshes and textures for 4 spears: dwemer long spear, daedric long spear, nordic silver spear, stalhrim spear. Why those were not made and baked into the game - no idea.
2. You will be using "use best attack option" anyway, so you will be poking with a spear anyway.
3. Regarding Little John - the way you use staves IRL is nearly the same as they way you use a naginata/voulge/bardiche/poleaxe and even a spear. So yes, you can use a spear like you use a staff, except it has a sharp bit on the end that can poke and impale a target. And nothing stops you from swishing a spear to cut things with a blade. Unfortunately, the way spears are done in the game, especially damage ranges, do dirty to spears.

The whole bit with spears in the game is that thrust animation is faster and easier on the eyes, and hit range is the longest of all weapons aside from staves (which are not that great damage-wise or durability-wise).

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. One of the wuxia movies that got HUGE global recognition when it released in the 2000s. Along with "Hero" (Jet Li tells a Rashomon-style tale to the First Emperor of Qin about how he dealt with several master assassins from other kingdoms, one of which is spear user

Also one thing that I found interesting in the clip anon has there from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is that the super-sword being used (ineffectively, she's good but not great and stole the super-sword) by the younger woman is a "jian" (aka the taichi/wushu sword usually seen as as pivotal to chinese martial arts as the katana is to the soul of japanese ones) but the elder women there (who you may note is very, very famous now) is using a "dao", the broadsword that is seen as much easier to learn to use and requires less skill to use at a similar level. I always thought it was kind of interesting they had 2 chinese swords and one was always seen as the lesser of the two in terms of purity/skill of swordsmanship

In order for a spear to be a good weapon you would need to design your video game combat to not be

>swing your weapon down/to the side and the enemy takes damage
>spin the spear like a helicopter blade and just slice up the enemy

Creating video game combat where a spear would work is too much effort, spears need too much discipline to use and a random gamer doesn't care about things like optimal range, or hitting with the blade of the spear. They just want to swing and hit an enemy.
>>
>>750215761

spear is irrelevant when you have enough armor to not be stabbed by it. thats why they arent in video games, because everyone as hit points.
>>
>>750228586
>This is literally what happened
No it isn't. The pilum was not just used for throwing, which a common misconception from outdated academia, and the more melee oriented spiculum eventually replaced them. Either way, your claim is ridiculous seeing as A) the legions were not the majority of Rome's forces and B) legions still used spears. Spears were very much a dominant weapon during any phase of ancient Rome.
>>
>>750229389
If a spear can't punch through it then a sword is going to be doubly useless.

>>750190246
I know this is a thread for action stuff but I really liked the Highlanders in Etrian Odyssey stuff.
Also, the Spear (and most variants of it) is ridiculously good in both Shining Force and Fire Emblem, because it's a ranged weapon that can be equipped by cavalry units and also attack at melee range.
>>
>>750229208
>what are zoner mains
Literally even a basic game like dark souls has sweet spot mechanics on its scythes. It really wouldn't be a problem for a game to implement on every weapon. It's not like you're asking to put hooking on axes.
