How do I get into jrpgs?
>>
Just press A until the credits roll
>>
Disregard the garbage in the OP for starters
>>
>>750192671
I typed in best jrps and this image popped up
>>
Mario RPG is a good starting point
>>
>>750192718
Do you also believe in horoscopes and ask Grok to diagnose you when you feel sick?
>>
>>750192560
Start like i did with Mystic Quest and Secret of Mana on the SFC. Oldies but goldies
>>
>>750192626
sometimes you have to open the menu
>>
>>750192560
play a handful of well received square enix jrpgs and decide whether you want story-driven games or gameplay-driven games. you'll be going into some weird spaces if it's the latter. whatever you do, understand these games are less focused on roleplaying itself than wrpgs due to chasing after console players from day one
>>
>>750192718
Most "best games" charts you'll find on search engines are just popularity polls rather than actually the best games of a genre.
>>
Genuinely don't. There exist JRPGs that are worth playing, bu the genre at large caters to specific breeds of subhumans who place minimal value on quality gameplay or writing and who basically want something that makes them feel that wasting time to make number go up is actually meaningful.

FFVII is the most overall solid FF game. FFX is the best, in the sense that it offers the most satisfying experience if you go deep into it, but that's very much in spite of how much dumb shit it makes you go through to get there.

DQXI is great, and one of the better DQ games (though the entire series is excellent in general), but DQVIII is the peak and should be played beforehand.
>>
>>750192786
yeah its fun
>>
are you looking for a classic, modern, or futuristic style world and story?

Lol, what level of hipster are you on where this doesn't at least include a decent number of uncontroversial exceptional JRPGs? There's are definitely games I'd put in over some of what's there that I don't care for, but I'd have to see the 3x3s of people who are like "no, these are teh suxors, my special snowflake games shit all over them."
>>
>>750192560
Start with the mainstream super popular stuff that everybody tells you how great they are then work your way to more niche stuff and romhacks.
>>
>>750192989
Nier Automata is not even a JRPG and you insist on glazing that garbage chart that is merely an aggregate of garbage posted on Reddit and Gamefaqs?
>>
>>750192949
>FFX is the best
I clarified that's much of it is genuinely shit, but it's one of the few JRPGs that is actually very rewarding to delve deep into and explore properly, especialy the international version, which is the main reason I ultimatle yrate is more highly than FFVII, even if VII has way better story, pacing, an ability system that doesn't take the entire game to 'open up' (though it allows you to just spam enemy skill for the most part) etc.
>>
>>750192876
>i only care for FF and DQ
you could have stayed at the door nobody forced you to enter.
>>
>>750193048
>Nier Automata is not even a JRPG
It's easily better than the vast bulk of the genre, and especially if you play on the highest difficulties and don't cop out of that. I genuinely can't think of a JRPG that integrates storytelling and gameplay together better than it does.
>>
>>750192560
Pick one that looks cool to you and has decent reviews, ignore the contrarians in this thread who'll tell you to play some random obscure shit instead
>>
>>750193012
Yeah tell someone to start with FF7 Remake as their first JRPG that will definitely go well
>>
>>750193276
A friend started with it and it was their gateway jrpg. Problem?
>>
>>750193198
You're telling more about your sorry state than the supposed quality of that piece of shit.
Then again the vast majority of people who're supposedly JRPG fans are exactly like you, people who don't actually know shit about the genre nor do they care.
>>
>>750193198
>It's easily better than the vast bulk of the genre
that's because it's not a jrpg. jrpgs are trash

I was only commenting on the stuff in the image. There really aren't crazy indie RPGs better than the mainstream stuff though because the genre is so heavily reliant on high production values. The myriad hipster picks rarely offer much substance over the mainstream stuff, not because the mainstream stuff is even that great most of the time, but because the off beat picks generally suffer most of the flaws that the mainstream stuff does and rarely elevate themselves over that.

Dragon Quest is legitimately the most solid JRPG series that exists as it's so squarely gameplay and exploration focused, much to the chagrin of storyfags. I would love to see more in the genre that's actually about fucking off and just exploring the world like how this series does it, but that's rarely done so well. Pokemon is really the closest anything else gets to doing this so well. Zelda at its peaks destroys the whole genre entirely.
>>
>>750192560
remove FF7 from that image. Its shit.
>>
>>750192786

>>
>>750193668
FFVII is like by far the least shit JRPG. It's like the most uncontroversially overall decent thing in the genre, even if there other games that handily surpass it in specific ways.

>>
>>750193515

>>
There are different ways to go about it. You could choose some commonly touted titles. Or you could go by years if you want like a sense of older to newer titles and go through that to see how they've changed over the years. Or you could pick some that have a cool art style to you or premise in the title, story, etc. Or pick some based on a platform available to you or if you prefer 3D over 2D and stuff like that.

Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy X
Lunar Remastered Collection
Tales of Eternia
Tales of Symphonia

>>
>>750192989
3x3 threads are cancer. It's just a bunch of discord trannies trying to flex their esoteric game collection which they usually don't even play. There's also that one avatarfag that thinks the mods are out to get specifically him and he wont shut up about his gay ass shmups and how much better they are than whatever stuff other people play. As always, there's almost zero genuine video game discussion on /v/ without some strings attached.
>>
>>750192560
I feel like RPGs are just something you either know you’re into or you’re not. I can’t see why anyone would force themselves through a genre if they aren’t already inclined toward it. You know what you’re getting: lots of text, maybe some strategy and party building.

uhh, you boot up one and play it? the fuck does this mean. how do you know if you like a particular food, you take a bite and find out.
there is nothing anyone can do to make this any different. you either are interested in them already and will boot up a bunch and play them, or you are not and will boot up one for a little bit and then not play it. no suggestions will change this, there is no magical jrpg for people who don't actually like jrpgs. most of the genre is good, almost all jrpgs from the early or mid 90s until the mid 2000's are reasonably good - if you actually like jrpgs
>>
>>750195820
Nice anon, FFIV is great
>>
>>750192560
Start off with short simple ones and work your way up.
>>
>>750196165
>so he can try out a jrpg that wont turn him off from the entire genre.
Then he shouldn't play them and probably does not like the genre to begin with. Again, this idea of "jrpgs all suck but actually there's a magical jrpg just for people who hate jrpgs that is great and its what jrpgs should be!" is retarded. If a game turns you off of a genre, you don't like the genre. There are no jrpgs that would turn a person who actually likes jrpgs off of the genre
>>
>>750195997
It's because they always prefer RPG Maker porn garbage. Sad.
>>
>>750192560
Play:
Chrono Trigger & Astlibra
FF6, 9, 10, 12 and Tactics - related: Tactics Ogre (Reborn)
Xenogears, Xenosaga (optional), Xenoblade X, 1 & 2
Only play Persona if you want to live a highschool fantasy, and kys if you can play more than one of these games, especially one right after the other.
>>
>>750196886
NTA but I just ignore all contrarians because I know their wrong opinion means absolutely nothing.

Honestly, having been gaming since the 80s, I would probably recommend going straight to Dragon Quest XI S. I was tempted to suggest starting with Final Fantasy 1 or Dragon Quest 1. But I'm not sure those games would hold a new player's attention long enough to interest them in the genre. DQXIS is as pure as modern JRPGs get. If you don't enjoy DQXIS, then JRRPGs are a genre you should avoid. Do not waste your money buying the top ten JRPGs of all time. These are long games. You will not play through them unless you love the genre.
>>
>>750192560
First you buy or pirate the game
Then you open the game
Then you can pick a difficulty, some jrpgs are easy as fuck though so beware on picking normal
Then you play
>>
>>750196861
>Here's a dozen moviegames for children and weebs
>What? You don't like them? Then you hate all JRPGs!
There's plenty of games that would turn people away from a genre, in any genre, because the vast majority of all genres is for mouthbreathers, and you thin skinned faggots are the first to discriminate whenever somebody doesn't conform to your bullshit.

>>750196861
That's just not true. There are loads of games out there and not every game conforms to the standards set by the genre. You're also arguing from the standpoint that he's already played a jrpg, which he hasn't. He's new to it so he wants to look up and see what jrpgs people deem the best so he can start with a good one before he wastes his time with a shitty one that might turn him away from the entire genre. Believe it or not, there are good and bad examples of every genre out there. Now post rope faggot.
>>
>>750193798
it gets a big bonus for being extremely well paced.
>>
>>750192560
Jrpgs for newfags are DQ11, P5 and Trails remakes, then the person can branch to the rest of the dq, persona and trails games and so l
>>
>>750192560
That depends. There are certainly entry level JRPGs one could recommend but the genre does present some variety so preference is a factor. Anything would do. Narrative style, visual style, expectations or preferences regarding combat or character builds. Like, do you prefer turn based with some strategy or fast paced action and combos, do you care for unique mechanics? how about story and characters? Does tone make a difference for you? Everything from sci fi or freaky horror to classic fantasy or wholesome coming of age stories is on the menu.
>>
>>750198241
P5 is a bad starting point. Sure, it got popularity, but it's one of the longest games of the genre and the structure of the game is so different from most games. Dumb idea to recommend a 100hrs+ game with plenty of good 20~40hrs games around.

JRPGs kinda screwed what's the definition of a RPG. I want to say that Nier Automata is not a RPG but rather an action or action adventure game, it is way more of a game similar to Devil May Cry than any Final Fantasy, it only has levels, but you have zero choice in how to develop your character, all your numbers go up. Your choice is reduced to which passives you want to put in your chip-thing whatever it was called.

But then aren't all JRPGs like this? In classic Final Fantasy 7 your levels automatically increase whatever stats, your characters can get every spell by just passing the Materia around and leveling, and then you pick which character sticks with which Materia that gives the best passive buffs. There is just zero role playing because the characters come with classes already pre-defined and you fight watch numbers go up. If you fight with the thief archetype or the monk or the wizard, it barely matters anyway.
>>
>>750200310
The first JRPG was Dragon Quest, and it was the most popular game because it was Japan's first "press x to awesome" game that anyone could beat. Look it up

PE1 kinda counts as a RPG, PE2 does not. Play them. Avoid 3rd Strik--I mean Birthday.
