the great debate
>>
There is no debate, AoS is way better
>>
>>750197317
AoS has plenty of qol stuff over SotN but the dialogue is retarded. Maybe it' was a translation issue.

AoS is good for a handheld game, but it's still a handheld game

>>750196536
Every handheld Castlevania improves upon SoTN except for maybe OoE until you get to the Castle.
The problem is that every single one of them is being held back by not being a full on console game so they get hardware cucked.
>>
>>750196536
AoS is just as easy & boring gameplay-wise as SotN just with a completely forgettable castle. I know hipsters love to glaze AoS but all three DS games absolutely rape it in terms of quality
>>

why are you comparing Castlevania with Dark Souls?

Yeah, Castlevania is more like DMC in 2D

AoS was tightly designed and the soul system was fun to experiment with
Dawn of Sorrow felt too bloated and I disliked the anime art

There was nothing to experiment with. You reset a room until an enemy soul drops then you use it once to see if you like it or not, what the fuck is there to experiment.
Tightly designed = boring linear design

But who cares, you can beat the entire game with a water gun. There's no incentive to experiment there's no roadblock especially when you get that big holy fast greatsword that attacks around you the game is just over when you get it

Absolutely not true. I had to switch to a faster weapon (Hrunting) to defeat Death

>weapons are just startups with no unique effects
>same for most equipment, zero fun effects on anything that isn't a ring

>has 2 good bosses total, maybe head hunter if it wasn't so God damn easy
>have no reason to gimp yourself so you are always a top stats

DoS soul system got rid of having Stat up being 3 different souls or having 3 copies of skeleton soul like arc thowing bullet souls.

Also it's map and enemies are way more diverse. It gets too much hate due to anime portraits, underbaked forging and the touch screen gimmick, but it is no doubt the superior oS game

Tons of the weapons in AoS are useful. Try using Balmung against Julius on a non-NG+ playthrough. Last time I played it (last year) I switched weapons frequently. But there's a huge range of soul effects. Unfortunately the soul drop rate was too low, so a lot of people didn't get to see what they were really capable of. But some of the better souls like the transformations and Red Minotaur are kino.

>>750207116
Tons of weapons are the exact fucking same with a bump of stats, meaning I'd just use whatever swing type I felt like using this run and upgrade whenever I got more damage. Gone are the days of silly runs using whatever weapon was actually fucking unique.

The soul drop rate isn't too bad when you can just drop in and out of a room in a Blink of an eye tho. Reality is that regular enemies die too quickly to use bullet souls regularly and bosses are melted way too quickly by bullet spam to care much about experimenting. Most fun I had with the bullet souls was in the TA, but the balance there is ass.

imo Symphony is significantly better and near enough every criticism people make of it applies equally as much or more to Aria. Symphony isn't even my own favorite, but in general it's so much more feature complete (i.e. """bloated""") than the others that it's difficult to make a case for it not being the best overall package bar a handful of individual aspects which might pull more or less weight for you depending on personal taste

Nope
>You can select which area to fast travel to

>Using consumables is simple, just pause and consume (instead of the convoluted method of pausing equipping, using, pausing, re equipping again in SotN)
>Mana refills on it's own so you don't have to go around breaking every single candle
it's just a better game
>>
>>750219291
Just the SotN map alone means 5 times more than all of those things combined
>>
The only thing SotN has over Aria is the fact it all looks and sounds so much better due to being on Playstation rather than a GBA. If Aria was remade 1:1 but with the visual and auditory fidelity of Symphony and voice acting, it would completely mog it in all regards.

>>
>>750220314

>>
>>750219009
Why was Aria even made? Just the soul system?
SOTN was a grand departure from an established formula, and they got a lot right - right off the bat. Like responsive attacks to better suit the new formula, or inspired abilities like animal/fog transmutations. The level design wasn't great. Yet it's somehow worse in Aria. I climbed a long tower expecting either a path to a new area or some special item/ability, and at the very top - they placed the reward item just inches above my max jump height for no real reason other than padding. Which is what this game is... padding. Where are the unique abilities? Or traversal challenges? Or anything to make this game worth playing. All we got was sub-weapons...
>>
btw Alucard can do a spinning jump kick, which is not the usual double jump dive kick, it is a spinning jump kick that you perform by doing the special attack weapon command midair while bare-handed or with a fist weapon.

I don't really talk about this much, but even if we're never getting the 1999 game, I wish Konami would have told us more about what the world of 2035/2036 is like in CV. Do they have AI? If I call the cops and tell them a vampire is trying to kill me, will they show up with exosuits and drones? Did Trump still become president? I understand they were trying to avoid making too many predictions and getting too many things wrong, but they could have given us something. Graham says the existence of vampires was kept a secret by the church but was leaked to the outside world. I assume this happened due to the internet. So are there internet message boards where vampires post? Come on guys.

>It doesn't have 99% of its cool shit locked behind rare drops.
But it does, that's what the enemy item drops are. That's some of the best shit in the game and it's locked behind grinding, not to mention Symphony has no NG+ so you won't even get to use it much. And Symphony's drops rates are significantly lower than the soul drop rates in Aria. Ironically you've named one aspect that Aria is a DIRECT improvement on by every single metric.

>>
>>750224432
Exactly, and you'll likely have over half the souls by that point with no grinding at all. Symphony's drops are prohibitively rare in comparison, yet they include shit like Crissaegrim, Rune Sword and Medusa Shield. Ridiculous to think that Aria's souls weren't an improvement. On top of that, Symphony absolutely needed an NG+ option to let you actually use the shit you found for more than a couple hours.

Bullshit, just standing in the middle gets you killed the fastest because both can reach you the easiest. You need to manage both of them and their different attacks while avoiding their heads and long necks which cause damage too you.
If this game was Symphony you would be able to kill it in 20-30 seconds and never have to learn it's attacks and moves.
>>

>gameplay
You have less moves at any given moment, less mechanics, and worse exploration and fights

Fuck NO

Sotn was broken and easy, AoS is just easy
>level design
Fuck no, map is boring aff, with nothing worth finding in it besides like 4 weapons the reward for exploring is usually a pot, fuck

>>750230226
I hate on the lategame paintings, but the circus-inspired one that repurposes Nation of Fools is a fun little asset-dump obstacle course, and has a really underrated BGM too. To this day I'm still overall kind of conflicted on the whole "portrait" gimmick in the first place. Wanting to bridge the game's identity between a hub castle and something more similar to linear stages was admirable but the execution left something to be desired.
>>
>>750232430
There is literally no difference. You can just open the menu, equip the consumable, and press circle before the enemy can do shit. This just makes it less clunky. But of course as a SotNfag, you like consumables in general because you're a shitter.

SotN offers a great deal more in scale and still manages to be exponentially greater than the sum of its parts. And I actually like the inverted castle. The way it's essentially open-ended and you just explore it as you see fit with all the abilities you amassed from the first half is really cathartic and pretty novel. Additionally: using fighting game inputs as magic spells is tight as shit. I don't care that tetra soul trivializes literally every boss. It's just fucking rad. PoR does it too with combat maneuvers with that haoh shou kou ken-ass tumble roll and it's in the top 3 for the subgenre along with these two. Coincidence? I think not.

I suspect the relationship between Nintendo and various major Japanese devs got complicated somewhere between the NES and the SNES, or at least from the SNES to the N64 like when Capcom started making Megaman X and RE for the Playstation. There were always CV games on Nintendo hardware in any given generation but at some juncture Konami started hopping on the Genesis and fucking PC Engline CD of all things. It's still baffling to me that for the longest time one of the best games in the series was stuck on a fucking add-on exlusive for a console barely anyone had to begin with. Maybe it had something to do with the economic bubble bursting but it's one of those gaming history things that probably warrants further examination.

Oh, come on. Peter obviously shanked Ananias and Sapphira for holding out on him, then blamed their deaths on God. Peter, the rock on which Christ built his church, is the archetypal jew. Paul (formerly Saul) seemed like a good bloke though.

Liking AoS over SotN is like pretending Once Upon A Time In the West is better than The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. You're just some poser that gets your opinion from a youtuber or AoS was your first Castlevania that you played on your brothers GB Advance and you love your brother very much

The waifufags make OoEfags seem like mindless coomers but OoE just is the best Igavania unironically. The move to a more solid level structure in PoR was better realized and both combat in levels and boss fights finally felt meaningful compared to prior games where you just run few enemies. Presentation is great thanks to coming out once the team was well acquainted with the DS hardware and the series was finally allowed an actual fitting artist again.

Fuck the crab boss though.

I dislike OoE because of the fucktarded farming and honestly bland level design. If they were going to make so many short levels, at least make them a bit more flashy. One of my most distinct memories of the game from when I played it so long ago rushing through one of the underwater levels a lot farming for who knows what. For a bit I actually liked, I also remember the prison wall area with the killbot.
>>
>>750248924
Nah I disagree, I played OoE not that long ago and I finished 3 Castlevanias this month and am on 4th now. What was lost in those smaller maps was the feeling of being trapped. I like the linear feel that OoE has (which HoD has too) but the tension is lost BECAUSE the maps are so small and you know for a fact that escape is only a couple of screens away. Now try that in CotM lol. And here's my criticism about the "difficulty" that people keep going on and on about in OoE.

In that game there is only one enemy type that is dangerous. Other Castlevanias do this to a smaller extent but it's very obvious in OoE. This happens DOZENS of times - you enter new screen, a giant floating/flying blob of a monster is above you, and it either - 1. Dives at you quickly 2. Flies over you and attacks from other side 3. Flies above you and fires magic. This happens OVER and OVER. if you didn't equip the axe weapon for Shanoa, or something that has massive burst damage, you are unable to recognize patterns or are a perma-noob. With that enemy type blasted the moment you move into a new area OoE is no harder than DoS or something like that.
>>
>>750248924
The level design in OoE is almost extraordinarily boring. Cool theming in the environments and bosses, though.

Never. The most we should ever get is the prelude to the battle of 1999. Julius going around OoE style, gathering allies and meeting people, and ending with him about to enter the castle. The actual events themselves needn't to be shown. You can have some villain that's not Drac or Death for the sake of a final boss, but that's it.

CotM is my favorite but then it was also my first CV so I'm biased.
Legit issues:
>Drop rates are cartoonishly low solely to justify the Magician and Thief classes existing (this is not unique to CotM, however)
>The critical path is almost entirely linear, the only real fork being the destroyed statues which technically allows doing the waterway first if you can tank the poison water
>The powerups/progression unlocks are mostly bland like destroying or pushing blocks, or indeed the aforementioned statues.
>No weapon variety except for the Mars and Mercury spells
>The final two cards are gated by the Battle Arena and aren't even guaranteed drops. Also have fun farming restorative items for the Battle Arena because there's no shop.
>That fucking gay ass candle that drops the Gambler Armband can go fuck itself
Despite all of the above, it's the best one. I couldn't exactly tell you why, I think the difficulty curve and the castle layout is pretty much top tier for one thing, also the DSS system is really cool and lets you experiment. Also anyone complaining about the double input to dash is a bitch and can be safely ignored.
>>

Compared to other games that are generally considered "the greatest of all time", SotN is designed like absolute TRASH. Go to any top 100 list and SotN sticks out like a sore thumb. It's hilarious. SotN doesn't deserve a quarter of the hype and AoS mogs it easily.

One thing that makes AoS stand out from the entire rest of the Castlevania series is the twist of learning you're playing as Dracula. this.

to any lurkers don't take any of the shitflinging too seriously. I really love both SotN and AoS. Play whichever one strikes your fancy.

I agree with all that has been said about SotN coming out of nowhere, nailing and defining its genre, and never being truly surpassed. The game is has a bit of an odd way of doing things, like input commands and how one equips consumables, but all the quirks make the game "interesting" to play. It isn't too challenging but it has top of the line presentation and music

Aria is my other favorite. i think the story and characters are more interesting than any other Castlevania. It saddens me that people act like the plot doesn't matter. But the moment to moment gameplay and just exploring the map kicks ass and it is a great playthrough every few years. Just like the SotN Dracula image where the game deserves CRT native resolution, Aria looks its best when it isn't blown the fuck out on a modern screen. I'm using the Gamecube's GBA player addon but running a custom .dol using flippydrive. The .dol is called GBI speedrunner edition and it is lagless, native resolution BEAUTY. It doesn't get better than this for Aria. It might seem lik a lot of setup for GBA but considering Zero Mission and Fusion are on the system as well, I wanted a nice way to play.

DoS is great sprites good music good systems (except weapon crafting grinidng) but the story is fluff. Portrait of Ruin is 3rd place after SotN and AoS it is insanely fun and packed with goodies. Order of Ecclessia is really hard and long. I get what they were going for and I appreciate where it takes the genre but it is a bit much at times. Again, all in the 8-9.5 range.

CotM and HoD are the only ones I don't often feel like playing.

Aria has

- the worst music of all CV games by a mile
- the grindiest mechanic of all time in the franchise, interested in seeing all those unique soul powers Soma can wield? np, just farm a monster somewhere between 50 and 115 kills and you'll get to see that one single spell!
- terrible visuals, im not talking about resolution, lol at the anons mentioning that ITT. I'm talking animations, shit monster death animations (go look up how an Axe Armor enemy dies in SotN and even DoS, now look at it in AoS), shit jump animations, barebones spellcasting animations
- absolutely shit bosses, Dawn of Sorrow completely blows it out of the water in the boss department. The Legion fight is literally for retards, all the bosses are so easy and simple. Julius is the only good boss in the game
- No cool opening, HoD has the chase into the castle, SotN has the prologue and the Alucard run through the forest. AoS has an opening scrawl, no wide shot of Mina, Soma and Alucard at the entrance, its just game starts and Soma is like "omg where are we"

It does have a cool setting with Dracula being finally dead but it's a 7/10 at best, definitely one of the weaker games in the franchise

AoS's pacing and structure are superb. The Clock Tower and Death are a great midpoint climax, and after that the game opens up more in the back half. The Underground Reservoir really feels like castle's soft white underbelly. It's massive, you get a lot to do there, and it connects to nearly every other area. The Reservoir makes you feel like you're somewhere you shouldn't be, then the Forbidden Area takes that feeling a step further. The Arena feels like the darkest pit at the deepest depths of the castle - I love how the backgrounds in that area are just black most of the time. The Floating Garden is also the most explicitly "magical" area, with the illogical room warping. It leads you to Death at first (which is appropriate), then you later come back to it for the game's finale.
