They didn't. Enjoyed re-playing Tactical Breach Wizards recently and looking forward to Mars Tactics being released sometime soon. (Also when the fuck is Triangle Strategy 2 releasing?)

>>750202726
It's not terrible, it's just too easy and gets easier the more you progress, but it still has some fun mechanics.

>>750203348
Yes, it is.
>>
They're not healthy but they're not as dead as RTS. Had some fun with Fell Seal, even though I didn't like character sprites for humans and the portraits were a complete mess. Dark Deity 2 was alright for a Fire Emblem-like but 1 had more janksoul and powertripping units. Hoping Tiny Metal 2 is good
>>

Nah I'm with that dude, mewgenics kinda blows
>>
>>750203723
The game is mechanically good, aesthetically fucking heinous.

Hating it because of 'e-celebs' is just retardation though. That's forming your opinion of a game exclusively based on what retarded shit gets posted on /v/ about it. Hating it because the art is terrible and the dialogue is so fucking cringe-worthy is reasonable, hating it because of /v/ is retarded.

That's a trend I hate with newer SNK games. Sometimes they'll literally just shrink a sprite in paint without touching it up for the new scale, ruining it.

>>
Tactics games I recommend
>Hard West 2
Fun, arcade-y tactics game. You regain all your action points with every kill, so the unique concept is to chain together long combo kills and try to win the entire map in just a few rounds.
>2 Fights in 2 Spaces
One of my favorite roguelites to spend time in is FiTS, I have many hundreds of hours in it. Recommending the early access sequel instead because people might not have heard of it
>King Arthur: Knight's Tale
Maybe the best melee focused tactics game. Really fun, and with a unique morality system. Just make sure to not be neutral or you will miss out on unlocking new characters
>Steamworld Heist 2
Neat little game about bouncing bullets around rooms to hit your targets.
>>
>>750207464
This
>>
>>750207675
Metal Slug Tactics basically stole Into the Breach's concept if that interests you. But it added a mechanic to simulate the run n gun style by giving you armor based on how far you ran. So every turn you're supposed to move the max amount, even if you end up standing in the open.
>>
>>750203348
It's fucking horrible, they made it a shit-like and it ruined every gram of potential the game had.
>>
>>750207953
Doesn't help everytime they acutally DO something good, they get shitted on for not playing like final fantasy tactics. Despite every fftfag making it obvious they only like it for the story even when they talk about gameplay.

>>750202650

>>
well metal slug tactics was extremely barebones and they basically had no post-launch support for it. It came out and had like 20 maps and that's it.
>>
>>750203532
>gets easier the more you progress
Shouldn't it be harder? A SNK game, and Metal Slug, of all fucking games, gets EASIER with time?
That already seems like a glaring mistake on this game's design, nevermind the tactic RPG change
>>
>>750202650
Thats a puzzle

>>750209580

>>
>>750206821
Next update is getting a pure roguelike mode. You're provided starting cats, collars, and some equipment and all you have to do is make it to the end of the act without worrying about meta progression. The game is very playable without engaging with the house stuff much anyway.

>>
>>750207816
Well, that's good to know. I do enjoy trying wacky combinations to make some game-breaking synergies. I guess I can continue without at least waiting for the other shoe to drop.
>>
>>750203348
Barely a tactics game. More puzzle than tactics.
>>
>>750211008
no one anywhere said that. In fact I thought it was gonna be a tremendous flop like 99% of edmund's game because he's a fucking weirdo, but he appeals to people for some reason so hey. It succeeded but in a way that much like isaac, it's not doing much for the genre, it's just a really polished core game.
>>
I tend to enjoy more deterministic puzzle tactics games. Not a big fan of all the Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics like games where its all about rng and grinding. I like games that feel like chess puzzles.

Into the breach was the last tactics game I enjoyed.
>>
I'm not sure, but the few I have played I did love, which were Advanced Wars and a Fire Emblem game. Oddly fun genre.
>>
>>750211581
I wasn't crazy about the game, but Tactical Breach Wizards is basically purely a puzzle game.
>>
>>750202650

>>
>>750202650
Like a lot of specific genres, it wasn't compatible wit highly parallelized, highly uncoordinated modern slop development.
A tactics game needs to be greater than the sum of its parts to be appealing and that needs tight focus and ideally a team of multi-disciplinarians.
>>
>>750208860
Based suggestion. Few games have this much soul.
>>
The generation that enjoyed and grew up with them grew up and became adults and don’t have time to spend 30 minutes fighting a battle they may lose and have to all over again and the younger generation doesn’t have the attention span to fight the 30 minute battle
>>
>>750203348
it's not as bad as people are saying, but it's definitely wasted potential with the roguelite design
>>
I played this earlier this year, and it played really well. I wouldn't mind a sequel where they do more, but for a tactics game starring the TMNT, it was solid.
>>
>>750203909
Mechanically good my ass. I appreciate the attempt at filling the game with shit, but there is no way to keep it balanced because of it. I quit out of boredom after clearing the ice age without losing a single cat the entire play file other than the throbbing domain sacrifice. The game is broken in an unfun way that just wastes your time without providing a justifiable challenge.
>>
>>750202650
Many of them are just turn-based RPGs with aoe options on a grid more than anything, so they're boring by design. Others are like Disgaea and more like visual novels tacked onto a different game all together.

>>
>>750202650
Big identity issues and weird games trying to appeal to very different crowds because of it.
There are two types of tactics games, RPGs and puzzle games.
Some think both of these belong in the same game, they don't.
The biggest issue is tactics games being unclear which one they are, it really just needs to be different genres of games, because they are.

And lets not even get into how often tactics combat is used in a visual novel and then they act like its a serious rpg not just a visual novel with barebones combat mechanics.
Imagine you are a casual consumer who finds out they like games like this, maybe they like puzzle focused ones, maybe rpg focused, whatever. When find a game that looks cool in the genre, buy it, and its completely different, they have a bad time, try again, oops the same thing happened, then they just stop playing games in the genre.

I don't think there is another genre with such discoverability issues and meaningless genre label. Roguelikes is similar but if you are playing actual roguelikes you can figure out how to find them and don't really need to worry about the genre name being worthless.

Honestly not really. 1 has balance changes from 2 backported so reduced radar range on jormungandr and midnight eye, gains mk2 takes 2 turns to charge, and most importantly you can fill up your flagships in the deploy phase and the number of deploy slots was not rebalanced with this in mind so you have way more units than intended. I think 2 is pretty much the same as the psp version. Then there's a couple extra missions just for this release that let you deploy both bydo and human units.
Personally I liked the look of the original better than this version. The 3d models are complete static even instead of having their thrusters animated

War of Banners demo is fun.

Other decent modern titles I've played recently are Troubleshooters, XCOM EW long war rebalance, Solasta 1 (especially player made campaigns with UB mod), Battletech aside from the crew and story, Archaelund, Expeditions Rome (aside from the black centurions), HoMM OE potentially, King Arthur: Knight's Tale, Our Adventurer Guild, Valkyria Chronicles 1 & 4. Seems like the market is still there because developers keep making games in the genre, just not as frequently as would be ideal.
