Modretro Chromatic vs Analogue Pocket

Which Gameboy-FPGA-clone do you prefer?
>>
analogue is probobly better but i just like the look of the chromatic
>>
>>750213884
chromatic because it makes fags seethe
>>
>>750213884
neither. i cant imagine using the GB form factor as an adult with adult sized hands.

nothing about it is good. there is a reason why everything since the gba has used the wider layout. gba, DS, 3ds, switch, psp, etc etc suck my NUTS
>>
>>750214109
I am sure most won't argue about that. Those are retro devices for people who want to play those games the -intended- way.
Yeah. There is a reason no other system past them used that form but we are talking about an audience hyper focused on accuracy
>>
Why did transparent hardware die?
>>
>>750214109
>>750214279
I like vertical handhelds because they let you tilt your head down a little bit less
>>
>>750214097
>people hate Analogue because they are only doing limited FOMO runs and also just don't fulfill their promises like DAC support for the Pocket
>Modretro has haters because Palmer Luckey supports Trump and works for the military

One side fucks with you - the other one is political bullshit.
>>
>>750213884
The analogue in this case, but fuck is it overpriced and not even as accurate as mgba. People are too shy with testing its accuracy. Overstocked, and yet people still pay the doubled or tripled prices on eBay.
https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/GBA_Tests
Note how the pocket's results are from a previous version of the test.
>muh inputlag
Runahead, gpu sync, frame delay

>>750214097
I understand there's less of a premium with clear plastic there.

It's in stock and overstocked, people just only want it from eBay for some reason. Felt tempted to replace an old GBA, but it's not even as accurate as what a $150ish device can emulate.
>>
>>750218452
Yeah first for them to let you just buy it. But they still can't keep the Dock in stock
>>
>>750218302
The Analogue Pockets main appeal is the fact that it can run a lot of platforms including handhelds and home consoles on a fairly high level.
If you just want GBA and nothing else you are better off just buying whatever device you like running mGBA
And the Chromatic is the best for accurate period for those who want GB/GBC only.
Both are premium devices for a premium price targeting different niches.
>>
chromatic is extremely wonderful
>>
>>750214109
So you've never used a chromatic then?
>>
>>750217705
the military stuff is such a weird thing to be mad at
>>
As someone with a chromatic, it's 90% of the way there. It's the only way to play GBC with a modern display. However, the white balance is too blue. Original hardware with no mods will always be the best. Just get a lamp if you can't see it, but sunlight is good for you anyway.
>>
>>750213884
Dont you guys have phones?

This. Also being able to connect it to my TV. It replaces dozens of older consoles.
>>
>>750223345
If only they could keep the Dock in stock at all times
And they need to finally get back to that DAC support promise +restock
>>
>>750213884
I like the chromatic screen. If they offered a drop-in mod I'd pick it up in a heartbeat.
>>
>>750215275
too much soul
>>
>>750223685
Also: Gaming got occupied by the normalfags.
Who prefer consoles and handhelds like they prefer their living room - sterile - white or black - like a dentist waiting room
>>
>buying a clone instead of a real gameboy
ngmi
>>
>>750213884
Imo chromatic is better because it’s made just for the GBC, the screen is 1:1 resolution so it looks fantastic
The analogue is a premium version of a do everything handheld, but the ergonomics are trash
>>
>>750213884
I prefer the FPGBC I put together myself.
>>
>>750223591
They’re about to open up their parts store early next year
I just got an email about it
>>
>>750213884
I have both and prefer the Chromatic for actually playing GBC games. The screen is nicer and it's more comfortably to play for longer sessions. The size is also more appropriate, I all around consider it the better product.
One minor complaint with the Chromatic was for that Game Boy color palettes, only the default palette uses separate palettes for sprites and background tiles, so it's not quite like using the 12 color palettes you could use on Game Boy Color.
webm related, captured from my Chromatic some time ago using its USB-C connection.

Oh and one actual, big complaint. If you have a first edition Chromatic there's a flaw where it cannot revive a rechargable battery (power core) that's fully depleted from inactivity.
Customer service was good however and they shipped a USB battery charging dock free of charge. These apparently come standard now, haven't bought anything Modretro in a while though.

A good d-pad makes or breaks a system and I just don't like the Analogue Pocket's d-pad.
That thing is dockable though and supports a shitload of OpenFPGA cores so it's useful for that if the handheld experience doesn't vibe.

I just recently received a Game Bub in the mail but I've been too busy to set it up and start using it, so I haven't got a first impression of the thing yet. The specs however make it great for GBA games, and it's got more powerful OpenFPGA capabilities than the Pocket.
>>
>>750226547
Have you updated the chromatic to the latest firmware?
It has a colour temp changer now
>>
>>750226547
This thing is the Game Bub by the way.
I pre-ordered the purple one, but they fucked up and sent purple units to the wrong customers so I only got the clear one you see here.
There's technical write-ups iirc about how the GBA timing and accuracy is far closer to original hardware than what Analogue achieved.
>>
>>750226435
It'd probably need a custom driver board. Not opposed to figuring that out though
>>
>>750226674
Yeah I did that update, the added color temps is nice, but it only goes from neutral to warm (probably to try and closer match the original GBC display).
I left it on neutral.

I still play Chromatic Tetris from time to time, it's a really solid GBC Tetris game with modern rules, though I'm picky about some of the finer details that feel better in Tetris 99 or anything by Arika.
It's close, a lot closer than that Tetris Rosy Retrospection hack that seems to have a lock timing bug when you use your Hold piece.
>>
>>750226121
Those OG Gameboys will fail eventually. Nothing is immortal. So it's good people work on replacements

Oh another thing about the Chromatic.

Getting a flash cart is a hard requirement if you want to do ROM loading, no way around it.
Pocket and Game Bub support ROM loading via a microSD slot, however, the Pocket doesn't let you use their tailor made FPGA cores via ROM loading iirc, so you're using OpenFPGA substitution cores for microSD ROM loading.
In most cases that should make no difference to gameplay experience, but I recall the available shaders will differ.

Which reminds me there was this fucking around I did with Link's Awakening DX with the screen-warp glitch patched back in, and I captured footage on my Pocket.
It was pretty fun messing around with it and there's an out of bounds screen in the Color Dungeon that causes all kinds of wacky behaviour, including resetting the game in a faux-monochrome mode.
I imagine the results could differ between original hardware, the Pocket, the Chromatic, and the Game Bub, since this is unhandled OP code behaviour being triggered that usually would just freeze.
>>
>>750227046
At least ones that play cartridges
>>
>>750215275
Gotta admit the clear Chromatic shells look fantastic.
They're cheaper than the original models since they're plastic instead of a magnesium alloy.

Not as much of a fan of the color range though, they pick strange colors for their systems.

By the way, the version of Rayman GBC shown there is a re-release with a modified soundtrack, like that recent collection, It's a proper Ubisoft licensed release, even if it's not Nintendo licensed (these systems are merely compatibles after all).
>>
>>750226376
Problem is that all support for it was seemingly dropped and they refuse to open source the firmware for whatever reason. I have no idea why they're so stubborn. The screen refresh rate also supposedly means that they can't fix the fact that over a minute it's like .03% faster than an actual GBC.
>>
>>750227261
???
Random as fuck man
>>
>>750227323
The cartridges can fail, too.
Luckily backing them up is pretty easy these days, just with the right accessory, or iirc there's a Pocket thing for dumping some cartridges too now.

After market Game Boy cartridges are usually made with cheaper reflashable ROM chips, instead of MASK rom that's highly durable and reliable (it's the other parts like connector pins or save batteries that fail).
Modretro's own cartridge releases are reflashable ROMs, which they take advantage of as a means of updating cartridges by connecting the Chromatic to PC and using its updater tool.
There's been a number of updates for Chromatic Tetris, bug fixes and stuff.
>>
>>750213884
I'd immediately chose Analogue Pocket simply because it also plays GBA.

Ehh not that random, the whole thing about FPGA is trying to accurately recreate original system behaviour as closely as possible.

I haven't checked how this would behave on an original GBC, only on the Pocket, but I'm curious how it would differ should I try it on my Chromatic or my Game Bub.

I have multiple of both. The Pocket is better a general use FPGA handheld as it can run cores for other systems, though it sort of tops out at the SNES. It's unfortunate that it cannot do PS1 the way a full MiSTer can. The Pocket can also output to a TV or monitor over HDMI using their dock. The Chromatic, on the other hand, can only do GB/GBC, and that's it. However the screen feels far more authentic to the original GBC screen, but with a backlight. They went to great lengths to get the colors to look right. I also like that it has support for AA batteries out of the box, with an optional rechargeable battery that can be purchased separately. I do like being able to use AA batteries in a pinch. I would say the Chromatic is the superior option for GB and GBC, but the Pocket has value from its greater versatility. I also have a modded GBC with an OLED screen, which is very nice. The OLED screen has the best motion clarity of the bunch, while the Pocket has the worst motion clarity. The Chromatic feels roughly in the middle.

All that said, I mostly use a Retroid Nova currently.
>>
>>750227402
I wish they offered the plastic shell version but with the sapphire screen. I think Palmer only greenlit the plastic shell reluctantly to begin with though. Personally I hate how painted metal shells get so easily chipped.
>>
>>750227942
>All that said, I mostly use a Retroid Nova currently.
Currently saving up for one, your thoughts? On /vr/ a guy posted playing Network Transmission and that convinced me to grab one. My understanding is that the button and noise issues were addressed by this point, how's the software side? Is Rocknix the way to go or is AetherSX2 worth dealing with now?
>>
>>750227632
RE1, Silent Hill, too vague but maybe something that was released on cartridge?

I haven't had any problems with the button noise on mine, but I may not be sensitive to that sort of thing. People bitch about the button noise on the plastic Chromatics as well and that hasn't been a problem for me. I am still using Android, not Linux, and for PS2 emulation I'm using ARMSX2, which has been working great. I've been playing Mercenaries 2 on it without issue, as well as Outrun 2 2006: Coast 2 Coast. The only problem I ran into is that one of the screws got stripped very easily so now I can't remove the backplate. The other three screws were fine. Afraid to use an extractor on it because the screw is so small and is recessed into the casing.

>>750228079
Ah yeah that was me. I'm actually playing Operate Shooting Star on my Nova ATM, the DS version of MMBN1.
Turns out the 1280x960 screen is perfect for single-screen DS games, and this version of MMBN is great like this. Just use a toggle button if you want to look at the map.

The stock Android 13 firmware has been perfectly good, haven't looked into a Linux installation yet because a lot of the Android software's been just fine.
I've been playing Dusklight (Twilight Princess port), Wind Waker Randomizer, Link's Awakening DX HD (basically a fan game engine), a bunch of Super Metroid Map Randomizer, anything I throw as it has been great and I've got no complaints with button noise or fan noise or anything like that on my GC model.
My brother got the 16-bit model and he loves it too, he's actually using it way more than I have and loaded a load of his library on there and set up an ES-DE simplified frontend.

After MMBN OSS I'm considering playing the Phantom of Network PC port that GreigaMaster made. It turns out that it plays perfectly on this thing using GameNative, so it's a proper handheld version of what was originally a Japan exclusive mobile game.
https://github.com/StraDaMa/PoN_PC
Aside from that, I want to give Dark Cloud a try using ARMSX2. I've always wanted to play that one.

I'm waiting on the RG DS situation to get ironed out with BananaOS before I commit to OSS but it's moving in a good direction. Will be buying an RG DS Plus at some point for the perfect integer scaling but my priority right now is Nova > RG SP (It's what I wanted and the 35 was the only one that existed at the time) > RG DS Plus (Bought the DS literally days before they announced it).
>My brother got the 16-bit model and he loves it too
That's the one I'm likely to opt for myself. I'm not a fan of the C-stick right stick or the GC button colors and the transparents all don't look great from videos and real life photos I've seen.

My use case is primarily PS2 and GC, probably PS1 as well. I have an RG34XX and RG35XX-SP for GBA, WS, and WSC, I have a N3DS for Virtual Boy, I have a TrimUI Brick for NES, GB, GBC, and GG, and I have an RG35XX-H for PS1 and SNES.
>>
>>750230171
I really don’t really get the endless buying of the Chinese handhelds
>>
What's the best one that can play carts?

>>Modretro has haters because Palmer Luckey supports Trump and works for the military

Yeah, you and commies, Modretro only screwed up on their N64 one but thats about it.
>>
>>750231752
If I cared about practicality I'd just buy a PC handheld and call it a day. I specifically wanted particular systems for particular games. Yes, I can play GBA on my RG35XX-H but I'd rather have something that looks and feels like a GBA or SP to do so. It's much more enjoyable to me specifically to have systems for specific purposes even if it's less convenient.

The hardware is solid
It’s just firmware issues, which will mostly be solved by the end of the year, as far as official firmware goes
>>
>>750215275
I have the clear red but I changed the buttons out for white ones it looks pretty sick
>>
>>750230171
I've got my eye on the RG DS Plus too, I skipped the RG DS because the early reviews were poor, but RG DS Plus looks sweet with the metallic blue model.

Nova is pretty much perfect for PS2 and GC, I've heard some people complain the games look too small on the screen, but they look fine to me personally.
>>
>>750232590
I have the blue RG DS and aside from wishing the battery life was a bit longer, it's been pretty sweet with GammaOS custom firmware. Stuff like EBA feel pretty responsive and the games are gorgeous with the integer scale and 2x 3D rendering. I recommend changing it's built in stylus tip to a .5mm mesh one for easier dragging motions, but it's not necessary depending on what you plan to play
>>
What's the general consensus on the TRIMUI Brick Pro? Its the only emulation machine you can buy at a local MicroCenter. I hate that it has sticks, but it's either that or smaller size and wrose screen.
>>
>>750234475
Yeah, it's the custom firmware why I wishlisted the RG DS in the first place, and then swapped that for RG DS Plus when that got revealed.

It really would be a dedicated DS device, since my Nova is amazing for most things.
