fucking infuriates me that they did this. I know there's apparently some legal issues behind them not being able to re-release the PS2 trilogy, but holy fuck I am frustrated as all hell that I missed out on getting the port of AC5 because I didn't pre-order the last game.

In Zero it's a thing because you're a mercenary whose job is beating Belka for cash, so you have some leeway with how you go about that
After Zero you're almost never a mercenary, so you're going to be on the hook for some of the war crimes you commit
By the time yellow targeting comes back in 7 it's more of a "do you dare?" signal, because yeah sure you can kill yellow targets but a) it's dangerous and b) it doesn't give you score since it's not in your job description

That being said I do miss branching missions and stuff like the ace style, I always enjoy when there's a bit of variety in these games (like with X or Electrosphere), I was hoping there'd be more of it in 8
>>
>>750217476
Because Zero was done by the B-team as a stopgap for the PS2 while the A-team was making 6 for next-gen hardware.
The fact that it was infinitely better than both 5 and 6 tells you everything about Project Aces' priorities at the time.
>>
>>750215887
>One of the top 5 ps2 games can only be played via pirating

This is the one series where the fanbase isn't cancerous enough to rage over simple renaming of planes and they refuse to take advatage of it. Project Wingman and Ace Combat overlap in fans and nobody game a shit about the renaming of real planes in that game
>>
>>750218038
What did you think, buddy?
>>
>>750218038
Hope you had fun, anon
>>
>>750217476
It was a whole honor system dedicated to knightly themes for the Belkan War since knights are a Belkan thing. It would take away what makes Zero a tad special if other games did it.
>>
>>750217476
It's the fallout 3 problem where the game naturally pushes you towards being a good boy and it requires an unreasonable amount of effort to get anything else
>>
>>750218458
Most of Zero's S-ranks are score based. Some are time based, but for most of the game the player is encouraged to go full Mercenary to chase points.
>>
>>750218816
I got s on all but 3 missions and I ended at pure knight on my first playthrough I just finished.
>>
>>750217121
What the main problem is generally is some older aircraft are a legal nightmare to license and they dont want to cut your starting choices, imagine playing old NFS games or whatever and instead of 3 starting cars you get 1 and 20% of the roster has to be cut because of it.
Some licenses are easier to get but are as costly for AC8 as they would be for a ps2 trilogy rerelease

And there is this bitch
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panavia_Aircraft

Formation
Panavia was established in 1969 by the British Aircraft Corporation, Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm (which had formed the year before) and Fiat Aviazione (which became Aeritalia that year).

The partner companies are:
42.5% Airbus (Airbus Defence and Space)
42.5% BAE Systems (BAE Systems Military Air & Information)
15% Leonardo

Who is the rights holder? Who has to license it? all of them? one of them? what if 2 say yes and one says no? etc. its a nightmare situation.
>>
>>750218458
Eh you just need ammo for Mercenary, and many yellow targets are easier to destroy than other types, I'm sure some people saw Sorcerer as overkill for all those exploded windmills
Pure Soldier is a bit more annoying on a first run
>>
Started AC7 as my first game right now.

>>
>3-4 hour campaign
>ace system with 3x3 different boss encounters
>ABC missions
>165 aces to hunt on replays
wish ace combat stayed like this instead of 20 hour campaign full of cutscene slop, I've already done 3 campaign clears since the standalone release on steam and I still have stuff to look forward to.
>>
>>750219215
I think FOV mods were some of the first mods put out for 7, you might want to look into those
I don't mind it but I'm used to it, it's useful to have a sense of scale and dimension once you start having to fly around/through obstacles
>>
>>750215887
the port is kinda shit too and ruins the focus target camera when you hold triangle. on PS2 it's pressure sensitive and light press focuses on target and hard press zooms in. on this release it's perma max zoomed so it makes it completely useless.
>>

how does it run on psx? If it's good on there then complaining is a waste of time. also there has to be some way to pirate the ac5 steam port.
>>
>>750217121
I just pirated it dude.
I still bought the preorder of AC8 because AC0 is THAT good they deserve it
On a related note I have a pirated PS2 disc of the game back when it was new, but it never worked for some reason, either because the pirate didn't burn the iso correctly, or my PS2 had problems reading the disc. Never got to play the game until I emulated it a few years ago.
>>
>>750221273
Emulation for the PS2 games these days is flawless, though it has been a while since I checked

Ace Combat Zero had a really cool plot, especially when compared to 7 "ooh drones are scary" and 8 "ooh I'm a streamer now"
>>
>>750215887

I instantly noticed it when the first bomber was bailing out but i clapped their buttcheeks anyhow. Do not engage in a fight and expect to just tap out when you do not feel like it. Is this somehow a bad thing ingame wise?

Good lord.
I paid 5€ for my code
I don't even own AC8 yet
>>
>>750227472
The route you go just changes what enemy squadrons you face and will talk about you during the cutscenes, there's some dialogue changes here and there, and there's some other stuff like plane selection, but there's no "bad end" or anything like that, war crimes are happening with and without you
If you go Mercenary, they start treating you like a real Demon Lord, if you go Knight, they try to take advantage of your honour, if you go Soldier, they try to match you as a matter of principle
The game is built around playing all three routes so play however you want
>>
>>750227472
if you destroy yellow targets you get more cash to buy planes with, but the ace bosses in mercenary have pretty high tier planes. so have fun fighting typhoons on draken or fishbed if you go merc mission 3 on fresh save.

The experience is literally no better than emulating it. All the PS2 ace combat games actually have a native 16:9 mode, so if you use widescreen hacks with PCSX2 and toggle 16:9 in game, you get perfectly scaled UI rather than stretched 2D assets.

>70 dollars
Official keyseller sites like Fanatical and Greenmangaming exist, you know. They buy keys in bulk directly from the publisher, and rather than taking a 30% cut for themselves like Steam, they usually keep 12% and pass on 18% in savings to customers. Why do they do this? To create incentive to buy from them instead of Steam. I haven't paid full price for new release in a decade, or possibly longer, because I used to buy PS4 games on Amazon when they were doing 20% off if you had a prime sub.
>>
>>750229154
I find the controls slightly more finicky in the port, I get a weird drift, but that might be my own setup
The textures are a bit nicer than the emulated version but they're basically the same, otherwise
>>
>>750218458
Even if the honor system wasn't done well in Zero, the bones were there to iterate on. It's actually really disapointing AC8 didn't have it, it would have been a riot hearing the fear in the Sotoan voices when they do their gay little chant. We even had like three titles for the different honor scores
Mercenary = Terminus fingers
Soldier = 5 Wings
Knight = Hand of hope
>>
>>750229550

I got the AC5 port with AC7 and didn't really think it was that great of a game so didn't bother pre-ordering AC8. Something about that era just seemed dull and grey to me. I was kind of hoping there'd be a glitch like last time where I could wait for a sale and get it but I guess that isn't the case.

If they release AC4 I am definitely buying whatever game it comes with because of the fond memories I had of that game. New AC games have been fantastic but I'm not going to spend 80+ quid on a new game anymore.

Even though he just blasts that little kid who has been collecting death flags the entire game like it was a hobby, I just can’t bring myself to dislike Pixy, probably my favorite character in the series.
Wish we had a route where he at least tries to recruit us and join them, I mean we are mercenaries, Cypher had no real obligation or loyalty here.
>>
>>750229550
The story with yellow squadron was awesome. They didn’t feel like enemies or villains, and felt bad when it was time to fight them. We were just unlucky to end up on different sides in a war.
>>
>>750217476
The real annoying thing is how in 0, the ground attack missions have a score threshold where they grade you on time which is so much better than how the other games in the series do it where there's a (tediously long) time threshold and they grade you on score. They NEVER went back to the way 0 did it (Maybe in 8, I dunno, haven't played it) even though it was so much better that way.

What Ace Combat game should I play if I want an actual challenge (without going full bullshit on the difficult)?
>>
>>750238641
X and JA on PSP get pretty hard if you're looking for a genuine challenge. Though JA may be up there in the high bullshit levels because it's designed with co-op in mind, so a one player run trying to cover for a multitude of targets can be rough.
>>
>>750238641
Maybe 3? If only because it's difficult to untangle without a guide, considering there are levels you only unlock if you fail others and other things like that
There are mods for 7 that can bump the difficulty up, you can modify it as you see fit, push it right up into full bullshit if you end up in the mood for it, I think it's called Skies Unbalanced or something
Joint Assault gave me some trouble recently but only in a few places and only because of actual, total horseshit, I can't recommend it
Trouble is Ace Combat games generally aren't very hard on their own, and by the time you unlock the higher difficulties you'll be practiced enough that they won't be so bad, you have to go out of your way to challenge yourself (or do one of the dev challenges like no damage/guns only/attackers only, etc.,)

other way around for me. 7 is much more replayable. 8 has fundamental problems regarding the menus and cutscenes. like having to skip 3 cutscenes with each having individual loading screen. then hold on, I forgot to check ace spawn condition for the mission. so I go back to assault record, check it, and now I have to skip those fully rendered and loaded cutscenes again. same with aircraft tree. it's very bad design. first campaign clear was cool but the game clearly wasnt properly designed for arcade style replaying which is a huge core pillar issue.

Besides the obvious plane autism and just outright liking plane gameplay, Ace Combat's storylines specifically hit that power fantasy of being a war hero and turning a losing war around, mix that with anime-ass military westaboo narratives and cool if kinda retarded superweapons, and you get a pretty damn fun game to both casually enjoy and master as you go along.

They're basically arcade shooters with anime plots on top that take themselves pretty seriously about how one ace changes the tide of wars. Doesn't mean there isn't value to be had in arcade-y, though, but it's the best plane combat you're getting outside of throwing yourself into a dedicated simulator game for sheer autism.

emulation is really the only way to play. i have the port on steam and i can't fucking play it on my toaster because it needs directx 12.2 for some reason
>>
One of the other issues is that the game isn't downloadable independently - even on Steam it shows you playing AC8 when you're playing Zero sinceits a DLC. I'm not sure why they did this atop the stupid pre-order only thing (I figure they will make it a pay DLC for non preorder?).

Game itself is neat though. I'm trying to decide which Ace Style though - I naturally incline toward the Knight style which I'm to understand is the 'hardest' mode given you don't get all the extra money, but apparently getting "pure soldier" is the hardest thing to technically maintain because you need to get the marker exactly in the middle of the middle Soldier block which is harder to maintain vs "all the way Merc vs all the way Knight".

I wonder if they'll someday make a remade version of AC3 Electrosphere. With its farthest-future (I think?) setting of the series it should be possible to do even more mecha anime style wacky wunderwaffen shit, but most importantly in the west the game was literally only 25% of the JP version as I recall. There were like 4 major endings and other decision trees inside them, and instead the US version cut it down to only 1 route with no choices, and a lot of the chatter and plot stuff was removed to simplify everything. A full version of Electrosphere remade in a modern engine would be printing money for Namco.

>>750252378
It would also require a budget the size of a AAA game that Bandai Namco isn't super keen on, even for what AC8 performed. That's a ton of unique environments per mission and a very long campaign thanks to the different story routes. Now imagine having to make all of that in UE6 with AC8's fidelity even if they reused assets wholesale where applicable.
>>
>>750240645
care to spoonfeed? i kinda remember the first thread about the 1.0 release of the recomp had a link to a download but i didn't save it and now i regret it.
>>
>>750236468
Yeah a cheap Gamesaar is like $35 or something
>>
>>750252684
Eh, its not like Bandai Namco doesn't have the money to do it and even if they took the time to create all the new stuff in UE6 properly, having all the info on the plot, missions and other things that would normally take time to design from scratch saves some cash, making it cheaper than a whole new game. Not to say it won't have a AA/AAA cost of some sort, but it would likely do very well if they basically remade it in UE6, did all the things of JP AC3, and even expanded adding things that wouldn't be done at the original's time, would motivate sales.

If they don't want to spend anything that's one thing, but it would probably be very successful and for way cheaper than a totally new AC9 style title. Hell, Sega should do the same by remaking Valkyria Chronicles 2 and VC3 Extra Edition, but that's another discussion.

Isn't the tone of AC3 supposedly rather grim, especially compared to modern AC titles? Not to say that it would be impossible, but it might be tough to replicate without losing a thing or two that made the OG truly stand out since it might be "product of its time" type of deal.
>>
>>750255562
A mix of that and the fact that every major cutscene outside a mission, news bulletin and character conversation was animated by the same studio that did the Ghost in the Shell movie at the time. Either you just redo the visuals in the modern style, you find the original footage by Production I.G., or you reanimate all of that shit from the ground up.

idk why people have their panties in a twist over this. they did the same thing for AC7, it's a work around due to some licensing issues (blame lockheed martin if you want to screech about this). it's not like it's a remake, you can barely tell a difference between playing this version and emulating it. and if for some reason you really care, they announced it months ahead of release so you don't have an excuse for "missing out". plus AI decomps are getting cranked out, i'm sure AC0 will have a free, native binary soon. just a complete non-issue but poors still want to cry about it

I really don't see that it's basically just earth but with a far more accelerated timeline with big wars every 5 years. If you're not living in a country actively in a war the living conditions don't seem so different.
