I might be late to the news, but Nintendo has finally updated their official Metroid websitehttp://www.metroid.com/
i like the angry metroid vibes but not really interested in metroid games
>>750216627Try out Zero Mission, it's a good game, but also short, and is the start of the story, so it's the perfect game to start the metroid series.
>>750216532Nothing really new in it, though.
>>750216715it's not a genre i like. i'm sure the games are good, but just not for me
Played every 2d metroid for the first time just for ravenous. My ranking isSuper > Dread > ZM > AM2R > Fusion
Native PC port in like 3 months lol
>>750216998You can't know without trying.
>>750217662You should try Samus Returns too.
>>750217859i've tried metroid in the past. metroidvania is a bit more interesting but even that is not something that i'd play much more than symphony of the night
>>750216532fishing link
This game needs to be recompiled the day it launches.
>>750219589Nope.
>>750222450Not sure I like the design of the lighting on her chest, there.
>fishing Link
>>750222450Just noticed her shoulderpads are kinda like the screw-attack symbol.
>>750222792dread suit has that as well
>>7502224500/10 knees too pointy
>>750222694It's not, though.
>>750222694>>750222953kek
>>750222950Only noticing it now.
>>750223053I check some Samus Returns screenshots and official art and yeah it started in Dread
>>750222450It's an interesting idea. Having it just on the verge of being an armored Zero Suit. I get that the point is to make her look more vulnerable than usual to convey the idea that she must give in to the metroid to survive, but I think it could've gone further. Like, it works, but I'm just saying at that point, actually have it be the Zero Suit with some light plating. All in, you know?
>>750223287It's probably samus being buttmad all her powers get lost every fucking time
>>750222450better now
>>750222450Her torso is way too short.
do you think we'll get a Nintendo Today theme for Metroid when ravenous is close to dropping?
>>750216532Could this mean there's a new trailer soon or did someone at nintendo just go>oh shit did anyone push the update to the Metroid site
>>750216532I just want REOoT to come out so that the Ravenous news cycle can begin
>>750222450I think my issue is that the body is too smooth. I think it gets better with the varia suit, but it might just be a different color scheme.>>750222694Metroid fishing minigame when?
>>750226760>Metroid fishing minigame when?Samus fishing sounds like one of the most autistic things ever.
>>750222450Dread suit looked better
BUILT. DIFFERENT.
>>750216532It cant be any worse than Dread was, woo.
>>750216532I'm playing Prime 4 and just got the bike and went to the volcano area. So far I like the game.
>>750225896two more weeks literally
>>750228014It's pretty good, it just doesn't really have any highs or lows.
>>750228014A certain amount of green crystals are required btw.
>>750228494What are the great mines if not a great low point (meant both as a pun and critique because that shit sucked ass)
>>750222792Wonder who's making the Super remake
>>750228621Only good part about that area was the classic Elevator jingle, and even that was slightly off key ffs
>>750228621My favorite area, it feels like some Halo, which is kind of nice IMHO as a bit of a pace breaker. Up until then you're rocking all four beams, grapple, spiderball, you can go around collecting all kinds of items you may have missed. So this straight to the point shooting sections is fun for me. That boss there though, woof, it's a tough one.
>>750228563I see a lot of people make this mistake, thinking you're supposed to meander in the desert smashing crystals, but in all reality there's a bunch of boulders, if you find them mark them on your map for later, and after you get power bombs go blow them up. You don't even need every single one.
>>750228790Also all the story shit in there is offensively bad. I'm not opposed to a more combat focused area in general (even though it's just ripping off phazon mines in concept and theme) but it's the combination of the weapons you have being lame as fuck and all the story shit that makes it egregiously bad. That stretch from there to the crystal hunt to the finale is what truly soured the game for me. Before that it was just mid
>>750228863Game never tells you that they are a Requirement, is the point.
>>750229002It actually does within the first hour of the game, but a lot of people forget because it can be a long game considering how often you might put it down and pick it up, or how much time you spend collecting all the items. It does tell you early, never again though. It's in your pause menu indicating it's important, it's on the quest status screen.
>>750229002Or tells you it adds more of the crystals as it goes on. Gathering them early on is literally a waste of time and the game encourages you to waste that time. Even if you get basically everything on the map before the final green showers you can only get like 30% of the crystals. It's just horrendously designed
>>750228671I don't care what the leakers say, there is no God damn Super Metroid remake.
>>750228946There's nothing stopping you from having a bunch of the charged beam missile combos before going in. You could have a lot of different weapons to use for varieties sake. I didn't think the "story" was bad? the characters do a bit of a cliche sacrifice one after the other, but it's whatever. I enjoyed it because I liked games like Goldeneye back in the day, just a straight shooter. Crystal hunt is over when it begins honestly, as I mentioned before, you can just blow up a couple boulders and move on. Also the final boss was really good IMHO. My stance hasn't really wavered, people are hyper critical of this game which doesn't really have any huge issues. It's just a rather plain game is all.
>>750229125I beat it in three or four sittings, I forget. But it only ever said something to the effect of 'you should collect these if you see them'. I know that many players outright didn't even know about the upgrades certain milestones got the player. Terrible design, implementation and explanations all around. If it was more clear I'd cut that portion some slack but that's not the case7/10 game on a good day
>>750229149So now you're upset that the "game doesn't tell you to get them" and now you're upset that went ahead and did it all anyway. riiiight
>>7502293607/10 is fair, I would give it an 8/10, it's about as good as the first Prime, and it's definitely superior to 3
>>750227958Dread is really good though. Only complaints I have about it is the music which is pretty mediocreand the boring areas once you've killed the E.M.M.I.s. And it could always be longer of course
>>750229349The story is horrible because it actively undermines the whole premise of the game (they started by wanting to do the final thing as Tanabe said in that interview). Also the area is even more of a straight tunnel than fucking phazon mines was and it limits you to only beam combos since missiles alert the enemies. Also ending with the Omega Pirate sorry I mean Omega Griever is like the peak of the hack shit cake only to be followed by the double final fetch quests (both of which are worse than in Prime 3 which fixed most problems with the endgame fetchquests by letting you gather all the keys before the end game and you not needing to get all of them)>>750229435Should've added NTA. The game tells you to get them all the time which I interpreted to mean they're required. Many people have the problem that as that anon said the game says why to get them only once (to get the fruit) and even that is fucking vague as shit. Why do you need the fruit? What even is it? Why does it matter over literally anything else happening in the game? And as I said the game locks like 70% of them to the final game state anyway so why the fuck does it keep mentioning them beforehand? It forces the player in the awkward situation where they don't know when they should be gathering them. Obviously they wanted them to be gathered a little to get some of the early upgrades but that whole shit is so badly communicated and designed that it's ended up being like the main problem people have with the game even though as I said above Prime 3 basically perfected the end game fetch quest already so why the fuck didn't they reuse that system
>>750229303>picY'know, sometimes I think about how Samus is nowhere as out of place among the Nintendo mascots as she seems at first. She really is just a little guy.
>>750222450>>750222792>>750222950You are shown the Screw Attack at the end of Super, and it is the symbol used for her in Smash Bros.Has it actually been the Samus Attack this whole time?
>>750222450>Metroid: Zero Ass>psycho angry woman personalityWe all know where this is going
I've played a bunch of Metroid since the Ravenous announcement and I honestly prefer the more linear stuff in the series. I prefer Fusion to ZM, I think the more straight-forward nature of II is better than the OG game and is the main reason why Returns while very good is more of a companion piece, and Hunters is the Prime game that clicked the most with what I'd want from a Metroid shooter. Still haven't played Dread or Fed Force though.
>>750230586Interestingly enough I think they only started using the screw attack as a Metroid logo after Smash. I wonder if the Smash 1 devs picked it because it has an S on it?
>>750216532>>750222450MAKE THE SHOULDER PADS BIGGERHER HEAD LOOKS TOO SMALL IN THE SILHOUETTE WITHOUT THEMFUCK YOU
>>750231418I'm guessing the suit will get bulkier the further you get in the game. At least I hope so
>>750231418They shrinked them quite a bit in dread already presumably to help with visibility when the animations are always from the side. One of those animation analysis guys went into it a bit more but basically since super they've always cheated a bit with the angle of sideways samus since if her shoulderpads are the classic size they cover so much shit. She's started to kinda walk on an angle with her shoulders tilted towards the camera instead of full side on since making clear animations is probably hard as fuck if the shoulderpads are in the way all the time. Check out her walk in smash for example and she's practically facing the camera despite walking sideways. Primes of course you can have the regular sized ones since they aren't in the way
>>750231327>>750231327It's a funny thought.>>750231418>>750231586I've already posted a pic of the Ravenous Varia suit >>750226760, and she appears just as slim. She does bulk up with the Metroid suit, though, and we have yet to see what the Gravity or final suit will look like.
>>750229958>Why do you need the fruit?the game tells you it's needed to restore Lamorn civilization, and you find many hologram messages explaining their culture, it hardly feels abrupt to me
>>750232660It just says it contains all their knowledge. The logs never expand on what that actually means or why Samus needs to do it. Like I don't get where you got the restore their civilization part. The lamorn themselves are dead and will still be dead even after the fruit is planted. Also even the NPCs just magically know what it is and force you to go get it. Why do they care? Why do they even know about it?
>>750232823I'm just saying, you walk through the halls of their fallen civilization, are greeted by psychic spirits, and given psychic powers via the gemstone in your helmet. Then they tell you about the memory fruit. I cannot imagine thinking it was something optional, that's crazy.
>>750232363>picThe 'tism is strong with this one.
>>750222450I could see this working as a sort of temporary suit to quickly put on, but not meant for long term use. Think of it like Stark's briefcase armor from Iron Man 2. It could be something park of her Zero Suit.
>>750216532i can't believe they're going to get me to buy yet another shitty metroid game
>>750232920I mean I knew I needed to get the thing because they do say please do this thing but it's not sold well to the player either in-universe or gameplay wise as has been seen from so many people not what they were gathering the crystals for. Like there's no actual reason to do it like in the other primes. They could've also made it like a key to the tower or some shit. As it stands it feels weirdly implemented in story and gameplay purpose. I assume this is due to Tanabe being in charge of all the logs and him being a shit writer (actually not a writer at all before this!)
>I will survive. And I will make it home. I really hope the game starts with Samus just going about a normal, casual day before she gets jump by the ninjas.
>>750216532>>750222450>Samus is Velvet nowI hate Samus but this is an improvement I guess
>>750216532>suit up as character™ to go on an adventure™ in a galaxy™. Explore games™ playable on the system™Fucking soulless. The death of proprietary software can't come soon enough.

>>750233353>I hate Samus
Samus better shut the fuck up during the gameplay. The last thing I need is more shitty quips, like in the trailer.
>>750233938She's a female with emotions and feelings. What's not to hate? It's gross.
>>750222450Why is her cannon so stupidly thick
>>750216532they keep making her less feminine and taking away her curves, butt and breats, it legit starting to look like a man in a suit. I could understand if it was a bulkier suit but each iteration seems to make it sleaker and thinner, yet instead of making her female body stand out, it's looking less like a woman's body. Absolute insanity coming from Samus of all characters.
>>750234462What's wrong with making her look less feminine? I like not constantly being reminded that I'm playing a woman. It's nice for a change.
>>750234313Almost looks like she stole Raven Beak's. Yours' is the only post I've seen bring this up. It's fucking gargantuan bro
>>750232363>she's gonna take you back to the past
>>750234513>>750234093>>750233991Why do you hate Samus? What did she ever do to you?
>>750234991Didn't always hate her. But after Other M, Nintendo went way too far trying to make her a heckin #Badass. She's an obnoxious cunt now, showing off after every kill, and making snarky one liners like in the Ravenous Trailer.Take webm related for example. Metroid fans will say "OH MAN THAT LOOKS SO HECKIN COOL". I just want to punch her in the face for being smug and condescending. Do you fucking job and stop posing for the camera.
>>750235105You should really try again to kill yourself anon. I believe you could really knock it outta the park if you applied yourself!
>You should really try again to kill yourself anon. I believe you could really knock it outta the park if you applied yourself!
They had the right idea gameplay wise, they just need to sell it properly and ditch cringe sidekicks. Metroid is supposed to be Zelda without sidekicks.
>>750235536Other M's gameplay was terrible, though. You cannot justify things like doors locking behind you constantly. And no, it was wrong when Fusion did it as well.
>>750235604Why not? doors lock behind you in Zelda all the time.
>>750235604Other M's controls are bad because of the insistence on only the Wii remote made things unnecessarily complicated, the obscene linearity of Other M is a level design problem.
>>750235963They shouldn't lock behind you in Zelda either. Most of the time it's just blatant railroading for no reason other than you treating your audience like they're idiots. The only times it can be justified is if there's a puzzle involved, like you're not supposed to enter a room from a specific doorway. So you have to work your way around until you figure out the right path. Come to think of it, Super Metroid has a few of those as well, but for the most part you still have freedom to go back and check old paths. To put it another way, in a properly designed metroid/zelda, constantly locking doors behind you would make the game unplayable, because the paths all connect and come together.
>>750236095>They shouldn't lock behind you in Zelda either. Why not? maybe there's a puzzle to solve or enemies to defeat.
>>750217914not a huge fan myself
>>750236073You could update the controls, and it still wouldn't fix the actual game being a mess. Waggle to regen resources, for example, is just a sign that you didn't pace the refill stations properly, or you blatantly made it unfun to farm resources from enemies. And let's not forget automatic lockdown. That's not helping either.>>750236150>Why not? maybe there's a puzzle to solve or enemies to defeat. When that happens in Zelda, the doors actually open once you do defeat the enemies or solve the puzzles. For the most part, they don't stay locked forever. That's nonsensical.
>>750222450Dogshit
>>750236228>For the most part, they don't stay locked forever. Why not? maybe you need to gain a new ability, route through a whole new area that doubles back opening a shortcut.
>>750236472That might justify locking one door behind you, but that doesn't justify locking every door. For example, is there ANY justification behind the doors locking behind you in Tourian, locking you out of ever going back to the rest of the game? Mind you, the original metroid never did this. Metroid 2 never did it. The Prime games didn't do this, up until Prime 3 with Phaaze, but that game was below the quality of the other primes anyway.
>>750236228He didn't say that Other M's gameplay was perfect or even good, only that it had the right idea, obviously you wouldn't bring regen back for a second Other M, nor would you the retarded story, linearity or characters. The whole point of a sequel is to cut what didn't work and improve what did work.
>>750236653I'm not going to argue Other M is perfect, lol. It's not. I just think alternating between 2D, 3D, first person, third person, and being swift and snappy is the way to go with Metroid. I'm saying locking some doors, unlocking some abilities, that would be fine if they better contextualized it.Off the top of my head, the door locking could be an enemy attacking Samus and busting it. It could be a rock cave in. Maybe the door or the rocks could be exploded later on, maybe they can't. Maybe an ability you have, malfunctions in an area, so it's not a cringe sidekick "authorizing it" it's the ability coming back online, or being repaired, ect ect. They should take another stab at Other M from a gameplay standpoint, and just "fix it".
>>750233176If it doesn't start that way, then I'd want the ending art to be Samus being casual in her house.
>Site isn't secureWhat the fuck
>>750236905If the story doesn't work, if the linearity doesn't work, if the characters don't work, and if even the basic framework doesn't work, then you're better off just scrapping it all and starting over, instead of trying to salvage it. There's so little to even salvage from the game. You can't even argue that the backdrop and environments are good, because it's just a watered down version of Metroid Fusion, with environments less immersive than Metroid Prime. I think someone even showed a comparison pic where Other M's stalactites are literal 2d png files, while Prime had 3d stalactites all the way back in 2002.Whatever Other M did """"okay"""" was already done better by Samus Returns and Dread, bar any flaws they had. >>750236952>I just think alternating between 2D, 3D, first person, third person, and being swift and snappy is the way to go with Metroid. The way Other M did that was also messy. The times you did go into first person was usually for a poor man's version of Where's Waldo. When you try to do both, you end up not really excelling at either. Like how will you contextualize abilities that only really work in 2D, and try to make them work in 3D? Space Jump and Screw attack did NOT translate well into 3D, and are only viable as 2D powerups. Prime and Prime 2 showed this.>Off the top of my head, the door locking could be an enemy attacking Samus and busting it. It could be a rock cave in. Maybe the door or the rocks could be exploded later on, See, now that's fine because it's not permanently giving you the middle finger and saying you can't come back. Prime did this all the time with hazards that temporarily blocked you off from going back, but once you had the right items, you could easily return. That's far better than what Other M did, with indestructible doors that said "sorry you can't go back ever".
>>750237292>Prime did this all the time with hazards that temporarily blocked you off from going back, but once you had the right items, you could easily return. They went into that game design from the standpoint of reusing and reutilizing a lot of the areas and assets as much as they can, and it gets incredibly obnoxious at times. You would routinely go down a hallway, get some new ability, see something that requires ANOTHER new ability, and then you're just coming back down the same hallway. They went overboard and Prime doesn't get enough examination and criticism for that. I think it's fine for some areas to just get used once, and then you can safely lock it off from the rest of the map, keeping navigation a bit more tidy. and Other M isn't perfect either, I just want to see the return of going first and third person, and more consistent 2D and 3D swaps outside of just morphball stuff.>Like how will you contextualize abilities that only really work in 2D, and try to make them work in 3D? Space Jump and Screw attack did NOT translate well into 3D, and are only viable as 2D powerups. Prime and Prime 2 showed this.I have ideas, but as for space jump I would have it add additional jumps, and that opens an avenue for a new collectible type to find. You could get triple and quadruple jumps. Screw attack would work in third person as well as it would in 2D, I'm not sure why you think it wouldn't?
>>750237692>They went into that game design from the standpoint of reusing and reutilizing a lot of the areas and assets as much as they can, and it gets incredibly obnoxious at times. It was their first 3D metroid, of course they won't get it right the first time. Prime 2 was alot better in this respect.>I have ideas, but as for space jump I would have it add additional jumps, and that opens an avenue for a new collectible type to find. You could get triple and quadruple jumps. It definitely wouldn't work in a first person prime-esque game, because you have practically no air control when you jump and double jump. In an Other M style 3rd person camera, it would be hard to implement too because camera control would make it hard to jump in the direction you want to go. It works in 2D because the camera is fixed and jumping is thus easier to control.>Screw attack would work in third person as well as it would in 2D, I'm not sure why you think it wouldn't?If you look at how they did it in Prime 2, it really didn't function well as an offensive item at all. It was clunky and hard to control and was really only an extension for jumping 4-5 extra times across specific gaps, and it's the only instance of you being able to actually wall jump in the entire series, but again it's restricted to those specific wall surfaces. For 2d to 3D transitions, you'd have to first figure out how to properly translate 2D gameplay into a 3D environment. Prime is not a 2d metroid title made 3d. It's a first person game given the mannerisms and general flavor of a metroid title, but it lacks the core gameplay identity of the series. Other M has the same problem. It tried to be like a 2D metroid, but when put into a 3d environment, it flubbed.
>>750235536>Metroid is supposed to be Zelda without sidekicks.I tire of tryhard morons loudly asserting what any given series is 'supposed' to be.
