Another is that Shadow Mario disguise was all the result of the weird blue bandana and that he had it all along and just used it to trick E Gadd into giving him the paintbrush by pretending to be Mario. But I always just assumed E Gadd is just weird and likes to do fucked up shit for science. Luigi's Mansion 3 kind of portrayed him that way.
