Guess which game Iizuka DID work on, and which game DID have race tracks in the sky, though? I still love SA1 but it was really all downhill from there in terms of 3D Sonic level design. At least in Sonic R you had room to explore, and the levels could had layers of verticality to them. I'd say I want to return to that, but Frontiers and its BoTW slop have forever doomed 3D Sonic level design, I fear.

Japan likes to keep some things relatively vague no matter how much story there is, but in the west there is more scrutiny on "okay but how specifically does that work? where did that come from though? why can a being like that exist in the world besides the fact that it just does?" which is how we get shit like Frontiers where they decided to give chao the dumbest backstory possible when previously they were better off just being mysterious beings that sometimes hung around emeralds.
